2005 Ford F super duty problems

ford logo

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2005 Ford F super duty problems

The 2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty is known for several common problems, primarily affecting the engine, cooling system, and exhaust system.

  • Cooling System Problems: The 2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty has had cooling system issues, with 6 complaints reported to the NHTSA. The cooling system is prone to leaks, particularly from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves and the thermostat bypass. These leaks can cause white smoke from the tailpipe, increased cooling system pressure, and potential radiator failure.
  • Exhaust System Problems: The 2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty has experienced exhaust system problems, with 3 complaints reported to the NHTSA. These issues include delamination in the diesel tank, where minute metal and liner chips from the tank can choke the diesel pump and cause the engine to shut down.

These problems can lead to costly repairs and reduced vehicle performance. Proper preventive maintenance and monitoring can help detect issues early and avoid large repairs down the road.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-06
  • VIN: 1FTWX31P05E
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: AFTER DRIVING OVER ROAD IMPERFECTIONS (E.G. BUMPS, POT HOLES, DIPS, ETC.) AT SPEEDS ABOUT 40MPH OR ABOVE, THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK SHAKES VERY VIOLENTLY, AND THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES QUICKLY AND STRONGLY, ALTERNATING RAPIDLY BETWEEN CLOCKWISE AND COUNTER-CLOCKWISE MOVEMENTS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE TRUCK; CONTROL CAN ONLY BE REGAINED AFTER SLOWING THE VEHICLE TO BELOW ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR, WHICH IS WELL BELOW ACCEPTABLE SPEEDS ON AN EXPRESSWAY. THIS IS NOT A ONE-TIME INCIDENT, BUT HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY TIME A ROAD IMPERFECTION IS DRIVEN OVER. TIRE PRESSURE IS CONSTANTLY CHECKED AND MAINTAINED, THE TIRES ARE RELATIVELY NEW (I.E. LESS THAN 10,000 MILES), AND THE STEERING AND SUSPENSION EQUIPMENT HAS BEEN CHECKED BY A MECHANIC WITH NO OBVIOUS PROBLEMS.

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-05
  • VIN: 1FTSX21P15E
  • Components: STEERING,FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: ON APRIL 5, I WAS IN HE PROCESS OF STOPPING FOR A STOP SIGN, WHEN THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE TRUCK. I DROVE LESS THAN 2 MILES, TURNED THE TRUCK OFF AND IT WOULD NOT RESTART. I HAD TRUCK TOWED TO AUTONATION FORD IN ST. PETERSBURG FL. MECHANIC NOT ON DUTY, BUT MONDAY (APRIL 7, 2014), SERVICE DEPARTMENT CALLED AND SAID NOTHING SHOWED UP ON THEIR COMPUTER CHECK, AND WAS STARTING FINE AFTER A MINOR ADJUSTMENT. I PICKED UP THE TRUCK, DROVE LESS THAN 2 MILES, WHEN IT STALLED AS I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF COMING TO A STOP, WHILE MY SPEED WAS ABOUT 30 MPH. LOST POWER STEERING BUT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART TRUCK AND RETURNED TO DEALER. TOLD THEM I DID NOT THINK I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A SECOND DIAGNOSTIC TEST, SINCE THEY HAD FAILED TO FIND OR FIX THE PROBLEM. ON APRIL 10, DEALER CALLED SAID THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM AND SAID IT COULD BE EGR DIRTY OR TURBO BOOST. SINCE I HAD NOTICED TURBO WAS NOT KICKING IN PROPERLY DURING ACCELERATION FROM A STOP, I TOLD THEM TO DO BOTH BUT TO TAKE OFF THE $155 THEY HAD CHARGED ME FOR DIAGNOSIS. THEY AGREED AND MY TRUCK WAS RETURNED TO ME ON APRIL 12, 2014. ON APRIL 13, THE TRUCK STALLED WHEN COMING TO A STOP FOR A TRAFFIC SIGNAL. LOST POWER STEERING BUT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. LESS THAN A MILE LATER WHEN SLOWING TO MAKE A TURN, ENGINE SHUTDOWN AND I LOST POWER STEERING. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO MISS STRIKING A HOUSE AT THE INTERSECTION. TRUCK STALLED TWICE DURING THE NEXT 2 MILE TRIP. I THINK THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND IT IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED BY FORD OR IT'S DEALER. PLEASE INVESTIGATE. *TR UPDATED 10/2/2014 *JS

  • Summary: WHILE TRAVELING HOME WITH MY FAMILY WE HIT A SMALL POTHOLE AND THE TRUCKS FRONT END STARTED TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY UP AND DOWN AND SIDE TO SIDE. I CLASP THE WHEEL TIGHTLY TO TRY TO CONTROL THE SHAKE WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE TRUCK DOWN (WHICH DIDN'T HELP).AS THE TRUCK SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 20 MPH I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL AND PULL OFF TO SAFETY FOR A VISUAL INSPECTION. FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-02
  • VIN: 1FTWX31P85E
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: VEHICLE ENGINE (6.0 DIESEL) UNEXPECTEDLY AND SUDDENLY DIED WHILE CLIMBING A NARROW MOUNTAIN STATE HIGHWAY, JUST IN BETWEEN SWITCHBACKS THAT HAD NO SHOULDERS; HAD ENOUGH SPEED TO JUST CLEAR ROAD ONTO A SHOULDER. NO WARNING LIGHTS, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD EVER DISPLAYED PREVIOUSLY TO THIS INCIDENT. VEHICLE WOULD NOT START, TOWED TO LOCAL FORD DEALER. ENGINE TEARDOWN REVEALED LOSS OF HIGH PRESSURE OIL; AND FICM FAILURE AND GLOW PLUG MODULE FAULT BY OBD AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT NOW'S CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATED. STC FITTING REPLACED, DECLINED FICM AND GPM REPAIRS DUE TO COST AND VEHICLE ABLE TO RUN TO GET IT HOME. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ILLUMINATED. RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET REVEALS THESE 3 PARTS, AMONG OTHERS ON THE 6.0 ENGINE, HAVE EXTREMELY HIGH FAILURE RATES, ALL RESULTING IN AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF POWER AND POTENTIAL STRANDING. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE CONTACTED WITHOUT SATISFACTION. THE NHTSA NEEDS TO INVESTIGATE THIS AS A SAFETY AND INHERENT DEFECTIVE DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING ISSUE (AND COST!!!). IT MAY ALSO BE AN EMISSIONS CONTROL ISSUE AS THESE PARTS FAIL AND ARE NOT REPAIRED OR ARE REMOVED. THIS VEHICLE IS FACTORY STOCK AND DEALER MAINTAINED, HAD 6 YEAR, 75,000 MILE FORD EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR

  • VIN: 1FTSX21P25E
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: SEVERE VIBRATION AND COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AFTER GOING OVER BUMP/ROUGH AREA OF ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPENED FOUR TIMES. NEAR CRASH OVER SIDE OF MOUNTAIN AS VIBRATION WAS SO SEVERE AS TO INVOLUNTARILY CHANGE MORE THAN ONE LANE. BRAKING INSUFFICIENT DURING THIS PERIOD OF SEVERE VIBRATION. CONTROL OF VEHICLE OBTAIN ONLY AFTER SPEED REDUCTION ATTAINED (NOT EASILY ACCOMPLISHED WHEN IT HAPPENS GOING DOWNHILL!) TWICE HAPPENED AT 65MPH AND TWICE APPROXIMATELY 45MPH. FORD DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED FAMILIARITY WITH THIS PROBLEM, CALLING IT THE "DEATH WOBBLES". STATED THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE "OLD STYLE" STEERING DAMPENER WITH NEW. IF IT WASN'T A DEFECTIVE PART/DESIGN, WHY WOULDN'T THEY REPLACE IT WITH A DUPLICATE OF THE ORIGINAL. NO CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE AS VEHICLE "TOO OLD"...EVEN WITH ONLY 61,000 MILES. *TR

  • Summary: TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED OF 70 MPH ALONG INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, WHEN CROSSING TRANSITION ON INTERSTATE BRIDGE FRONT END OF TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY; STEERING WHEEL SHAKING SO VIOLENTLY DRIVER HAD NO CONTROL. BROUGHT VEHICLE SAFELY TO A STOP, MOVED INTO EMERGENCY LANE, CHECKED ALL TIRES, NO APPARENT PROBLEM. RETURNED TO DRIVING LANE AND IN LESS THAN 1 MILE UPON HITTING ANOTHER BUMP IN THE ROADWAY TRUCK AGAIN BEGIN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY*. AGAIN, DRIVER HAD VIRTUALLY NO CONTROL OVER STEERING UNTIL VEHICLE HAD SLOWED TO APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, AT WHICH TIME DRIVER ELECTED TO RETURN HOME RATHER THAN CONTINUE TRIP. VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. DEALER STATED THEY WERE AWARE OF THE 'DEATH WOBBLE' HOWEVER THEY HAD NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE. DEALER EXAMINED TRUCK AND DETERMINED THAT THE BALL JOINTS, DAMPERS, AND AXLE SE SHOULD BE REPLACED. HE DID NOT INDICATE THE PARTS WERE WORN, AND SEEMED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. HAVE NOT DRIVEN VEHICLE OVER 50 MPH SINCE RECEIVING IT AFTER REPAIRS, SO DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS ACTUALLY REPAIRED. *THE SHAKING IS SO VIOLENT THAT EVERYTHING LOOSE IN THE TRUCK IS THROWN ABOUT. THIS WAS NOT A TIRE PRESSURE ISSUE! TIRES PRESSURE WAS CHECKED AND ALL 4 TIRES WERE WELL WITHIN THE SPECIFIED TOLERANCES. *TR

  • Summary: THIS TRUCK REPEATEDLY HAS TO BE REPAIRED FOR FUEL SYSTEMS PROBLEMS. EGR REPAIR, 4 INJECTORS REPLACED, SO FAR. FORD KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THE 6.0 POWERSTROKE DIESEL, BUT REFUSES TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. SO FAR WE HAVE HAD TO PAY OUT WELL OVER $8000 IN REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET. NOW WHEN WE TRY TO TRADE IT IN ON ANOTHER FORD THE FORD DEALER REFUSES IT AS A TRADE IN. AUTO MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE MADE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS TYPE OF THING. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-08-13
  • VIN: 1FTSW21P55E
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED MY FIRST 2005 FORD F-250 IN AUGUST OF 2012. THIS IS THE FIRST VEHICLE THAT I PURCHASED THAT WAS A FORD PRODUCT. ON AUGUST 13, 2012 I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK DOING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH WHEN I NOTICED THAT I STARTED TO LOSE POWER ON THE ACCELERATOR AND MY VEHICLE JUST SHUTT OFF ALL OF A SUDDEN. THE VEHICLE LEFT ME STRANDED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. I HAD TO WAIT ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD START AGAIN. I ALSO SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF EXHAUST IN THE CABIN OF MY TRUCK. I THEN WENT TO A LOCAL MUFFLER SHOP AND HAD THEM CHECK MY EXHAUST SYSTEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THE TRUCK HAD NO EXHAUST LEAKS. I THEN STARTED TO RESEARCH THE SYMPTOMS OF MY TRUCK ONLINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE WERE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUES THAT I WAS HAVING ON MY TRUCK. SINCE THEN IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON SEVERAL MORE OCCASIONS MAKING IT VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE. MY LOCAL MECHANIC HAS BEEN UNABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE TRUCK. MY RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURE PROBLEM CREATED BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM UNDER WARRANTY. HOWEVER DUE TO THE UN-SAFENESS OF THIS PROBLEM FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD DO A RECALL ON THIS MODEL AND CORRECT THE DEFECT AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. I WILL BE MAKING ARRANGEMENTS TO CONTACT MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE. I MADE THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE OF ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS MADE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-12-28
  • VIN: 1FTSW21P45E
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THIS APPLIES TO FORD F-250 AND F-350 SERIES PICKUPS WHICH HAVE SINGLE REAR WHEELS AND THE FORD 10.5 INCH REAR-END. THIS ISSUE AFFECTS AT LEAST MODEL YEARS 2003 THROUGH THE CURRENT YEAR. THESE TRUCKS HAVE 4 WHEEL DISC BRAKES AND THE DESIGN OF THESE BRAKE SYSTEMS IS CAUSING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO FAIL. THE REAR DISC BRAKE ROTORS ON THESE TRUCKS ARE DESIGNED WITH THE INSIDE OF THE ROTOR DOUBLING AS A BRAKE DRUM THAT IS USED FOR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CONSISTS OF A SET OF 2 BRAKE SHOES WHICH ARE HELD TO A BACKING PLATE BY ANCHOR PINS. THE SHOES ARE FORCED AGAINST THE DRUM BY A CAM WHEN THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS APPLIED BY THE DRIVER. THE SHOES THEN APPLY PRESSURE TO THE INSIDE OF THE ROTOR AND THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SYSTEM HAS 2 BACKING PLATES AND THEY ARE BOLTED TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES OF THE REAR AXLE TUBE. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SHOES ARE HELD TO THESE BACKING PLATES BY ANCHOR PINS WHICH PASS THROUGH THE BACKING PLATES AND WHICH ARE ATTACHED TO THE BRAKE SHOES WITH CLIPS. THESE BACKING PLATES AND BRAKE SHOE ANCHOR PINS ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE SHOES ARE HELD IN THE PROPER POSITION WHEN THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS APPLIED. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SYSTEMS ON THESE TRUCKS ARE FAILING BECAUSE THE BACKING PLATES ARE RUSTING AWAY IN A RELATIVELY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THE RUST IS SO BAD THAT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SHOE ANCHOR PINS PULL THROUGH THE BACKING PLATES AND THE BRAKE SHOES THEN FLOAT FREELY WITHIN THE BRAKE DRUM. THESE BACKING PLATES ARE RUSTING AWAY IN AS LITTLE AS 4 YEARS AND IN LESS THAN 80,000 MILES. IN MARYLAND, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IS REQUIRED TO BE FUNCTIONAL OR THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. FORD SHOULD RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND FIX THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. FORD SHOULD REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE REPLACED THESE PARTS AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE. *TR
