Common Saturn Ion problems

Saturn Ion owners have reported several common problems, including power steering failure, transmission issues, ignition module failure, and gas cap issues.

Power steering failure is the most common issue, with 268 people reporting it. The power steering system is crucial for easy maneuvering and control of the vehicle. When it fails, the driver may experience difficulty turning the steering wheel, leading to safety concerns.

Transmission issues are another prevalent problem, affecting various Saturn models, including the Ion. These problems can range from transmission failure to difficulty shifting gears. Transmission issues can lead to significant repair costs and may compromise the vehicle's safety and drivability.

Ignition module failure is a specific issue reported by Saturn Ion owners. The ignition module plays a critical role in the engine's ignition system, and a failure can cause the engine to stall or fail to start. This issue can be particularly dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

Gas cap issues are also common in Saturn Ion cars. A faulty gas cap can lead to fuel leaks, difficulty starting the engine, and reduced fuel efficiency. In some cases, a faulty gas cap can even trigger the check engine light.

In addition to these issues, Saturn Ion owners have reported problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) system, which was introduced in some 2003 models. This transmission system presented an interesting technological gamble for the manufacturer, but it quickly spiraled out of control with numerous complaints.

Finally, the Saturn ignition switch recall in 2014 affected some Saturn Ion models. The recall was due to a faulty ignition switch that has been linked to the deaths of 13 people. The company may have known about the defect for over a decade, highlighting significant safety concerns for Saturn Ion owners.

How many miles do Saturn ions last?

Saturn Ion drivers regularly report the car surpassing 200,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. With excellent care there's no reason an Ion can't shoot right past a quarter million miles, but you'll have to be on the lookout for excessive wear and tear from previous owners.

How much does it cost to maintain a Saturn Ion?

The annual maintenance cost of a Saturn Ion is $338.

Is a 2007 Saturn Ion a good car?

On the positive side, the Ion is quick, and braking performance is very good. But the noisy engine returns unimpressive fuel economy, the cabin has poor-fitting materials, the seats are uncomfortable, and the rear is cramped. Steering is also inconsistent.

How fast can a Saturn Ion go?

On October 17, 2003 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the Saturn Ion Red Line, piloted by the GM Performance Division's "Saturn Land Speed Record Project" set a new land-speed record in the "G/Blown Fuel Altered" Class at 212.684 mph. This exceeded the previous record of 183.086 mph that was set in 2001.

Saturn Ion 2005
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 1G8AJ52F45Z
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The ignition cylinder was replaced in my vehicle because the key would not turn in the ignition to start the car. It is actually, the fourth time this has happened. I understand that there have been two recalls on this issue in the past. The reason it was recalled is because the ignition has turned to the off position killing the car's engine while the driver is driving on the road which has caused serious accidents. I was lucky not to get into an accident from this. The last replacement has lasted almost ten years. However, my issue is that General Motors apparently keeps manufacturing a defective part. This is unacceptable because I had to pay $585.02 to have this work done due to the fact that the dealerships apparently are not required to replaced it at no charge to the vehicle owner. It could also be a potential safety issue again.

  • Summary: While driving the car has issues with power steering when turning the wheel either direction the steering will lose power steering and jerk the opposite direction turning. I have almost been in numerous accidents now the worst going 75 on highway passing semi around a corner and it jerked and almost sent me right not the semi. This has happened numerous times as I was passing vehicles. Its not a steady no power steering it will do it out of the blue and anymore it's more times than not and again only when turning the wheel. It's scary. Our vin # isn't specified with the recall but has serious power steering issue. No warning lamps or anything like that. We have not had this vehicle inspected yet by a dealership. As far as the incident date it's not one specific date. It does this every day the car is driven.

Latest negative Saturn Ion car reviews

  1. Luciano Rippin 2025-06-20

    Vehicle year: 2006

Back in August 2010, I purchased a 2006 Saturn ION 3 with a 5-speed manual transmission. I absolutely love this car, but unfortunately, there have been some issues. Recently, I had to replace the ignition switch due to a faulty sensor. The PassLock system prevented me from starting the car because it believed it was being stolen. Additionally, the power steering light came on and I lost my power steering. Thankfully, I took it to the dealer and discovered that there was a recall from GM. Luckily, my car had less than 100k miles, so the repair was covered under the recall.

  2. Fausto Frami 2025-06-16

    Vehicle year: 2006

I purchased my 2006 Saturn Ion in July of 2006. Although I have experienced some issues with the car, I have taken it to the dealership for repairs and maintenance. Despite their efforts, the car still shakes when I stop, and the check engine light remains on. I have even had to obtain a waiver from the state of Pennsylvania due to the persistent issue. I am confident that the dealership will continue to work with me to resolve these problems and ensure that my car is running smoothly.

  3. Nels Kris 2025-06-08

    Vehicle year: 2007

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2007 Level 2 that I purchased brand new back in November 2006. Overall, it's been a pretty good car, but I did run into some trouble a couple of years ago when it started leaking gas. Unfortunately, even though there was a recall on the fuel pump, Saturn refused to fix it. Then, just last year, I received a letter warning me that the power steering might go out on the car. And wouldn't you know it, not long after that, it did! Once again, Saturn refused to fix it. Despite these issues, I have to say that the car still gets great mileage and has been pretty dependable overall, even with 190k miles on it. Thanks for listening!

  4. Unique Borer 2025-06-06

    Vehicle year: 2006

This has been a fairly good vehicle. However, the anti-theft system can be a bit of a hassle as it engages unexpectedly and needs to be reset. My wife has been able to achieve 39-41 MPG while driving, whereas my driving style at 80-85 MPH only gets 32 MPG. The rear suspension could use some improvement as it is not as comfortable as we would like. The front seats, on the other hand, are quite comfortable. Overall, it feels like a Chevrolet Cobalt in disguise, but with a higher price tag. It's worth noting that the local Chevrolet dealer has performed all the necessary campaigns, including the ignition switch and power steering motor.

  5. Zachery Huels 2025-05-23

    Vehicle year: 2004

I really hope that the US can produce a better economy car, but unfortunately ION has not lived up to expectations. The car's handling is very poor. The steering is particularly problematic, as it has an electric assist motor instead of a vacuum. This means that the steering can mistake a bump in the road for the driver turning the wheel, causing sudden and alarming deviations from the intended course. The steering wheel is also quite small, which was likely done to make it easier to get in and out of the car quickly, but this makes it difficult to maintain control while driving. Additionally, the wheel has a slippery texture and no indentations for grip, which can make taking bends in the car quite harrowing.

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car has had several issues, including sensor problems, a costly 5th gear repair at 40,000 miles, and difficulty starting in cold weather. The cooling system and wiper system have also required multiple replacements. However, it does provide excellent gas mileage. Despite these challenges, I have decided to sell the car at 85,000 miles.

  2. Simeon Ledner 2025-06-21

    Vehicle year: 2007

I'd love to share my experience with this car! I've had mine for 14 months now and it's been great overall. There's just a tiny bit of wind noise that Saturn will fix for me. I want to clarify that I'm not affiliated with Saturn or GM in any way. This is actually the first American car I've owned new since 1979. It's important to keep in mind that this is a $20,000 car, not a $40,000 SUV. When I drive well, I get an average city/highway mileage of 33mpg, which is pretty impressive. I always use good gas from Union, Shell, Chevron, etc. and change the oil every 3,000 miles, regardless of what the OnStar report says. I also make sure to keep the tires inflated properly and clean the air filter every 6 months (since I live in a dusty area). I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this car, especially since I've had bad experiences with American cars in the past.

This car is so much fun to drive! It handles curves and mountains like a dream, and has plenty of power. I absolutely love it! This being my first Saturn, I can confidently say it won't be my last.

I purchased my Saturn about 7 months ago with 116k miles on it. Now, it has 127k miles and still runs absolutely great. It gets around 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, which combined gives me around 29-30 mpg, which is not bad at all. The only issue I had was with the power steering motor, which I had to replace. There was also a minor leak during a rainy day, but I was able to fix it with a little silicone. Additionally, I installed a custom exhaust which sounds awesome. Overall, I love this car and it has been great to me.

I was in search of a Stick Shift car as I was getting tired of my 95 Prizm with 3 spd automatic (great car, but boring!). Luckily, I found this car on a car site. The price was right, it had under 89K on the clock and was a 5 speed (!). Although it had a few cosmetic blemishes (crack in upper front fender, small hole in side of drivers seat), it ran strong. Over the next 15 months, I replaced a few parts, such as the A/C Unit, new rear shocks, upgraded front brakes, new front wheel bearings, and lower control arms. Not all cars are perfect, but this one has been the most fun to drive since my 1978 Firebird I had in 1982. It has the gumption to get up and go on the highway AND, you can do the Supercharger upgrade from the Redline OR Cobal SS without doing anything special as the 2.2 will handle the extra power without strengthening the valve train or crankshaft. I am looking forward to having fun with this car, and...I love the back suicide doors! Everyone gets a kick out of them!
