Common Saturn Ion problems
Saturn Ion owners have reported several common problems, including power steering failure, transmission issues, ignition module failure, and gas cap issues.
Power steering failure is the most common issue, with 268 people reporting it. The power steering system is crucial for easy maneuvering and control of the vehicle. When it fails, the driver may experience difficulty turning the steering wheel, leading to safety concerns.
Transmission issues are another prevalent problem, affecting various Saturn models, including the Ion. These problems can range from transmission failure to difficulty shifting gears. Transmission issues can lead to significant repair costs and may compromise the vehicle's safety and drivability.
Ignition module failure is a specific issue reported by Saturn Ion owners. The ignition module plays a critical role in the engine's ignition system, and a failure can cause the engine to stall or fail to start. This issue can be particularly dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.
Gas cap issues are also common in Saturn Ion cars. A faulty gas cap can lead to fuel leaks, difficulty starting the engine, and reduced fuel efficiency. In some cases, a faulty gas cap can even trigger the check engine light.
In addition to these issues, Saturn Ion owners have reported problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) system, which was introduced in some 2003 models. This transmission system presented an interesting technological gamble for the manufacturer, but it quickly spiraled out of control with numerous complaints.
Finally, the Saturn ignition switch recall in 2014 affected some Saturn Ion models. The recall was due to a faulty ignition switch that has been linked to the deaths of 13 people. The company may have known about the defect for over a decade, highlighting significant safety concerns for Saturn Ion owners.
How many miles do Saturn ions last?
Saturn Ion drivers regularly report the car surpassing 200,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. With excellent care there's no reason an Ion can't shoot right past a quarter million miles, but you'll have to be on the lookout for excessive wear and tear from previous owners.
How much does it cost to maintain a Saturn Ion?
The annual maintenance cost of a Saturn Ion is $338.
Is a 2007 Saturn Ion a good car?
On the positive side, the Ion is quick, and braking performance is very good. But the noisy engine returns unimpressive fuel economy, the cabin has poor-fitting materials, the seats are uncomfortable, and the rear is cramped. Steering is also inconsistent.
How fast can a Saturn Ion go?
On October 17, 2003 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the Saturn Ion Red Line, piloted by the GM Performance Division's "Saturn Land Speed Record Project" set a new land-speed record in the "G/Blown Fuel Altered" Class at 212.684 mph. This exceeded the previous record of 183.086 mph that was set in 2001.

Saturn Ion 2005
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 1G8AJ52F45Z
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The ignition cylinder was replaced in my vehicle because the key would not turn in the ignition to start the car. It is actually, the fourth time this has happened. I understand that there have been two recalls on this issue in the past. The reason it was recalled is because the ignition has turned to the off position killing the car's engine while the driver is driving on the road which has caused serious accidents. I was lucky not to get into an accident from this. The last replacement has lasted almost ten years. However, my issue is that General Motors apparently keeps manufacturing a defective part. This is unacceptable because I had to pay $585.02 to have this work done due to the fact that the dealerships apparently are not required to replaced it at no charge to the vehicle owner. It could also be a potential safety issue again.

I have almost been in numerous accidents now the worst going 75 on highway passing semi around a corner and it jerked and almost sent me right not the semi. This has happened numerous times as I was passing vehicles. Its not a steady no power steering it will do it out of the blue and anymore it's more times than not and again only when turning the wheel. It's scary. Our vin # isn't specified with the recall but has serious power steering issue. No warning lamps or anything like that. We have not had this vehicle inspected yet by a dealership. As far as the incident date it's not one specific date. It does this every day the car is driven.

- Model: Saturn Ion 2003
- Report Received Date: 2014-04-30
- Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
- Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
- Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you my experience with my 2004 Saturn Ion. I bought it a year and a half ago from the original owner with 138k miles on it, and now it has 186k miles (I know, I drive a lot!). I had to replace the alternator at 155k, but other than that, this car has been a hidden gem. It's actually better than a Corolla because it's more affordable and doesn't have the same reputation. I originally bought it to get me through law school, but I've grown so attached to it because it's been so reliable that I just can't bring myself to sell it. I plan on keeping it until it falls apart. Thanks for listening!

I purchased my car on September 29, 2005, based on the positive reviews I read on this site. Although I had never seen, sat in, or driven the car before, I spoke to an owner at the gas pumps who highly recommended it. I must say, I absolutely love my car! However, I do wish I had purchased the '06 model with the limited slip and boost gauge. The wheel hop in 1st gear can be a bit of a challenge during hard starts, but once I shift into 2nd gear, the fun begins and doesn't stop until 5th gear. The power and torque from the 4-cylinder engine is truly amazing, and I can accelerate from 55 MPH in 5th gear without needing to downshift. Although the interior is made of cheap plastic, the center gauges are awesome. The handling and brakes are unbelievable, and the trunk is huge. I also love the RAD (rear access doors) feature. During my first tank of gas, I was able to achieve 23 MPG, with my best being 26 MPG and my worst being 20 MPG. Currently, my car has 2,200 miles on it.

I've had my Red Line for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it! As a matter of fact, my best friend took me to the dealer to buy it and ended up buying the same car - his in black and mine in red. He didn't believe me about how great it was until he saw it in person and asked, 'What is that? Because I like it.' We were lucky enough to get the last two on the lot for a steal because the '06's were selling fast. He originally wanted a Mazda6, but forgot all about it once he got in the Red Line. I can't wait to get back home from Iraq and drive it again. Spc. Ismael Maneiro JR US Army, Baghdad Iraq

I owned a body shop and have been around many cars. However, when I bought mine new 10 years ago and 160K later, I was looking for something I could depend on. And this car has been the best car I have ever owned.

I've been the proud owner of my '06 Ion for 4 years now. I purchased it used from a Saturn dealer with 22k on the clock and it has been a reliable car thus far. It averages 33mpg and over 40 on trips, which is great! I have had a few issues, such as the AC compressor failing (which was replaced under warranty), the power steering motor failing (which was out of warranty and would have cost $1300 to fix at the dealer, but I was able to buy a used ps motor off eBay and fix it myself for only $80), and the ignition module failing twice (which was an $82 part at AutoZone). Currently, the front right wheel has a bad bearing and is causing excessive road noise. However, most of these problems have been easy and quick to fix. No car is 100% failure proof, but I believe this car is a good trade-off. It's important to have realistic expectations when it comes to car ownership.

OK car for its price. Although I had a minor problem with the electric system in the first year, I have found it to be reliable overall. The original set of tires were of very bad quality and unfortunately had no warranty, but I have been able to achieve an average of 30mpg which is great. While the shock absorbing system could be improved as I can feel any bump on a road, the ride is otherwise good. The switching between gears can be a bit rough, but it's not a major issue. While the services are not of the highest quality and can be a bit expensive for an entry level car, I still find it to be a good value for the price.

I've only driven my car for 10000 miles and I've already had to replace the alternator. Although I bought it because I know Saturns are very safe, I find it to be quite slow and uncomfortable. The visibility is poor, acceleration is slow, turning radius is poor, and it lacks agility. After driving a Honda Civic, even the base model, the slowness of my car becomes extremely annoying.

I'm so glad to hear that you've owned two Saturns! It's amazing that your first one is still going strong after 10 years and 250,000 miles, despite all the challenges it has faced. It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with these cars, and that you find them to be very reliable. Thank you for sharing your story!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Saturn Ion, which I bought brand new in February of 2006. Unfortunately, after the first year of ownership, I had to have the transmission replaced. It was definitely an unexpected expense, and I had to pay for it out of my own pocket. I reached out to GM to see if they could help, but unfortunately, they were unable to reimburse me. Despite these challenges, I still own the vehicle and have many fond memories associated with it. However, I did encounter another issue on April 6, 2009. I was returning home from work and tried to turn off the ignition, but it wouldn't budge. I contacted Onstar and GM for assistance, but unfortunately, neither party knew what to do. My Saturn Ion ended up running for three hours while sitting still because we couldn't figure out how to shut it off! Eventually, I had to have the ignition switch, steering column, and key replaced. Despite this frustrating experience, I still appreciate my Saturn Ion and all the good times I've had with it. Thanks for listening!
