Common Saturn Ion problems

Saturn Ion owners have reported several common problems, including power steering failure, transmission issues, ignition module failure, and gas cap issues.

Power steering failure is the most common issue, with 268 people reporting it. The power steering system is crucial for easy maneuvering and control of the vehicle. When it fails, the driver may experience difficulty turning the steering wheel, leading to safety concerns.

Transmission issues are another prevalent problem, affecting various Saturn models, including the Ion. These problems can range from transmission failure to difficulty shifting gears. Transmission issues can lead to significant repair costs and may compromise the vehicle's safety and drivability.

Ignition module failure is a specific issue reported by Saturn Ion owners. The ignition module plays a critical role in the engine's ignition system, and a failure can cause the engine to stall or fail to start. This issue can be particularly dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

Gas cap issues are also common in Saturn Ion cars. A faulty gas cap can lead to fuel leaks, difficulty starting the engine, and reduced fuel efficiency. In some cases, a faulty gas cap can even trigger the check engine light.

In addition to these issues, Saturn Ion owners have reported problems with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) system, which was introduced in some 2003 models. This transmission system presented an interesting technological gamble for the manufacturer, but it quickly spiraled out of control with numerous complaints.

Finally, the Saturn ignition switch recall in 2014 affected some Saturn Ion models. The recall was due to a faulty ignition switch that has been linked to the deaths of 13 people. The company may have known about the defect for over a decade, highlighting significant safety concerns for Saturn Ion owners.

How many miles do Saturn ions last?

Saturn Ion drivers regularly report the car surpassing 200,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. With excellent care there's no reason an Ion can't shoot right past a quarter million miles, but you'll have to be on the lookout for excessive wear and tear from previous owners.

How much does it cost to maintain a Saturn Ion?

The annual maintenance cost of a Saturn Ion is $338.

Is a 2007 Saturn Ion a good car?

On the positive side, the Ion is quick, and braking performance is very good. But the noisy engine returns unimpressive fuel economy, the cabin has poor-fitting materials, the seats are uncomfortable, and the rear is cramped. Steering is also inconsistent.

How fast can a Saturn Ion go?

On October 17, 2003 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the Saturn Ion Red Line, piloted by the GM Performance Division's "Saturn Land Speed Record Project" set a new land-speed record in the "G/Blown Fuel Altered" Class at 212.684 mph. This exceeded the previous record of 183.086 mph that was set in 2001.

Saturn Ion 2005
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 1G8AJ52F45Z
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The ignition cylinder was replaced in my vehicle because the key would not turn in the ignition to start the car. It is actually, the fourth time this has happened. I understand that there have been two recalls on this issue in the past. The reason it was recalled is because the ignition has turned to the off position killing the car's engine while the driver is driving on the road which has caused serious accidents. I was lucky not to get into an accident from this. The last replacement has lasted almost ten years. However, my issue is that General Motors apparently keeps manufacturing a defective part. This is unacceptable because I had to pay $585.02 to have this work done due to the fact that the dealerships apparently are not required to replaced it at no charge to the vehicle owner. It could also be a potential safety issue again.

  • Summary: While driving the car has issues with power steering when turning the wheel either direction the steering will lose power steering and jerk the opposite direction turning. I have almost been in numerous accidents now the worst going 75 on highway passing semi around a corner and it jerked and almost sent me right not the semi. This has happened numerous times as I was passing vehicles. Its not a steady no power steering it will do it out of the blue and anymore it's more times than not and again only when turning the wheel. It's scary. Our vin # isn't specified with the recall but has serious power steering issue. No warning lamps or anything like that. We have not had this vehicle inspected yet by a dealership. As far as the incident date it's not one specific date. It does this every day the car is driven.

  • Model: Saturn Ion 2003
  • Report Received Date: 2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).

Latest negative Saturn Ion car reviews

  1. Otis Gulgowski 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Saturn. I initially bought it because I had heard great things about their reliability and customer service. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with the IC chip in the ignition, which seems to be a common problem. When I reached out to Saturn for help, I didn't receive the assistance I was hoping for. They suggested I take it to a local GM dealer or drive an hour to the nearest Saturn dealer. It was definitely frustrating, and it's a shame that Saturn went out of business. Based on my experience, I wouldn't personally buy another Saturn or recommend one to others.

  2. Terrence Douglas 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2004

I chose to purchase a Saturn based on the positive experiences of my friends who owned older models. However, my Ion did not live up to my expectations of customer loyalty from GM. Unfortunately, I experienced several issues with my vehicle such as rattling in the front suspension at 20,000 miles, a frozen ignition switch in 20-degree weather, a broken wiper gear case, and front wheel bearings that began to make noise at 60,000 miles. Despite having a $2,000 warranty and a 5-year warranty that applied from the day the car was assembled, I received no assistance. When the 'check engine' light came on and I was unable to diagnose the issue myself, I decided to purchase a Corolla from Toyota. If you are considering purchasing a used Ion, please be aware of the potential issues. For more information, please refer to other reviews listed on this site.

  3. Rocio Berge 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 2005

I bought my 2005 Saturn in mid-2005 after owning a 1996 model for almost a decade, which I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, my experience with this 2005 ION has been quite different. I have had some scary moments while driving this car, including almost getting into accidents three times, one of which was on I-95. The car tends to stop dead after a mile or so, leaving me without power or brakes. It takes around 10 to 20 minutes to get it started again, and even then, there is no guarantee that it won't stall again. It seems that the computer in the car is defective, but it takes several attempts to diagnose the issue. If only they had identified the problem back in 2006, I could have returned the car to the manufacturer under Florida's lemon law. I would advise against buying this car!

  4. Buddy Fadel 2024-11-01

    Vehicle year: 2006

Although it has had its challenges, I have found that when my car is working properly, it's a smooth ride. Unfortunately, it seems to only work about 10% of the time and has required multiple trips to the shop for various reasons. While the car is aging, the miles are still relatively low for its age. Although some issues have been resolved through recalls, new ones seem to arise unexpectedly. For example, I once experienced a gas leak while driving, which required a tow to the mechanic. It turned out that the seal had worn, causing the leak. While it has had its setbacks, I remain hopeful that my car will improve with proper care and maintenance.

I've had this car for just over 2 years and have loved every minute of it. Keep in mind that the car is not dent-proof, only dent-resistant, so it's best to avoid any accidental bumps. However, I'm happy to report that my car still doesn't have a single ding on it. (The top of the car is not dent-resistant, but that very seldom poses a problem.) I'm equally pleased with all the other features of the vehicle. It's a great ride, comfortable, and has decent gas mileage.

  2. Archibald Bernier 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2007

This is a fantastic car! I am absolutely loving my first Saturn experience. The mileage is impressive and the center dashboard is a great feature. The car is also very responsive. Although I have had a minor issue with a leak, the dealership has been very helpful and provided me with a loaner. Overall, the car has been superb and I appreciate the fact that it accelerates quickly without shifting into a 'passing gear'.

  3. Demond Schumm 2024-11-22

    Vehicle year: 2004

I traded in my big SUV for this little car 4 years ago and we still love it! Despite having a rebuilt salvage title (due to a previous accident) and 75k miles, it has been a reliable and efficient vehicle for us. With over 30 mpg and minimal repairs, it has been a great investment. The only maintenance we've had to do is keep relays on hand for when the electrical steering goes out, which used to happen monthly but it has been 2 years since we've had to replace them. We also did struts and brakes at 110k, and a fuse for the cigarette lighter. Of course, we've also done the normal things like battery, oil changes, and spark plugs. We plan to keep driving this car until our family doesn't fit! Thank you for considering our experience with this wonderful little car.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you my experience with my 2004 Saturn Ion. I bought it a year and a half ago from the original owner with 138k miles on it, and now it has 186k miles (I know, I drive a lot!). I had to replace the alternator at 155k, but other than that, this car has been a hidden gem. It's actually better than a Corolla because it's more affordable and doesn't have the same reputation. I originally bought it to get me through law school, but I've grown so attached to it because it's been so reliable that I just can't bring myself to sell it. I plan on keeping it until it falls apart. Thanks for listening!

Congratulations on your first new car purchase! I'm glad to hear that the ride is nice and quiet, making it one of the best you've had in your 15 years on the road. The driver's headroom is impressive, even for someone who is pushing 6-4 like you. I'm sure you could even sport a cowboy style hat and still have plenty of room! While the leg room could be a little more generous, it's great to hear that the power and handling are top-notch. It's understandable that the car may not handle as well in the snow, but the ABS/Traction control could offer better performance. Overall, it sounds like you're enjoying your new car and getting used to the tight turning. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
