The Saturn Aura, a car produced by General Motors between 2007 and 2010, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Interior Issues: The Saturn Aura has also been reported to have interior issues, such as problems with the seats, controls, and other components. These issues can range from minor annoyances to major problems that can affect the car's usability and safety.
In general, the Saturn Aura has been reported to have a range of common problems, particularly with the transmission, wheel bearings, and brakes. These issues can be expensive to repair and can affect the car's safety and usability. If you are considering purchasing a Saturn Aura, it is important to do your research and be prepared for potential repairs.
Is the Saturn Aura reliable?
This car is known to be reliable. The exterior and interior are nothing too fancy but it has the necessities (functioning windows, A/C, mid size sedan space, decent trunk space, etc). Saturn is no longer in business so some have had issues finding parts and repairs may be expensive.
Are there any recalls on a 2009 Saturn Aura?
2009 Saturn Aura Recalls
(Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles.
What is the life expectancy of the Saturn Aura?
If you're hoping to hit 200,000 miles in your Aura, that isn't totally unreasonable, but you should expect a maximum mileage closer to 150,000 if you're buying a used model. The car can last for years to come if you take excellent care of it, but it's a lot easier to keep a Toyota or a Honda running than a Saturn.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-19
- VIN: 1G8ZV57B89F
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Wife has repeatedly mentioned loss of power steering and for a petite woman each incident was quite scary for her. I drove it for two days before it happened to me. It was much worse than simply a car with no power steering, which I've owned before. It seemed like something was actively working to prevent the steering wheel from turning. The force required was at my own limits to steer adequately. The next time the car was started it was fine. However, it goes out while driving; about 40 MPH, in my case, as I was merging onto the highway. As others have mentioned, my VIN is not included in the recall for the torque angle steering sensor. I also must advocate for the recall to be widened. Obviously GM purposely narrowed the recall, knowing the later vehicles had parts that were not substantially different.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-12
- VIN: 1g8zs57b59f
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: While I was driving on the freeway my power steering failed and the car became impossible to maneuver safely. I had to take back roads home to minimize risks. I took it to an autoparts shop to see if they could help me find the power steering fluid resovior. This was when I found out my vehilce had an electric power assist and did not have a power steering pump. I drove home and the power assist would go in and out intermittenly. I looked online and found that my year of Saturn Auras had a recall associated with this exact problem. My complaint is that I have had the exact same issue present itself in my vehicle, but my VIN number states it did not have a recall. My question is why was it not recalled? It is an expensive repair and logically it seems that the recall should apply to my vehicle. It is the same make and model, but was not in recall according to VIN. I'm complaining that both GM and National Department of Transportation should have included my VIN in recall. I'm left with a car unsafe to drive. I could have a fatal accident when the power assist failed.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-15
- VIN: 1G8ZV57B49F
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Power Steering has failed. Yes, it is available for inspection. Can not properly control the steering, difficult to go around a corner. Problem is constant - but not yet inspected. Warning lights for Traction control and Check Engine appear, and Service Power Steering appears on the Information Station, but not prior to the failure. Problem started around Dec 15, 2021 after parking it overnight. Started it the next morning and that is when the problem started. A Recall posted in May 2014 calls for repair of some 2007 & 2008 cars for this problem, but not for this particular car, built in April 2009. Seems as though all Saturn cars using these same parts should have been recalled. Thank you
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-30
- VIN: 1G8ZV57B19F
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The power steering completely failed while driving. This made the car very difficult to turn and because it happened at a high speed, if there had been an immediate need to swerve, it would not have been possible due to the power steering failure. It is not as if the steering became like a car with "manual steering", as I have driven one without power steering before. It was much worse. Similar to how a handicap access door is very difficult to open manually as it can also be opened with the push of a button. In addition, it should be noted that normal alerts made by the car are supposed to play a chime through the speakers. For this car, it seems to be played through the driver speaker, which also stopped working some time ago. In fact both the front speakers have failed and I've only been able to replace the passenger one thus far. Therefore, when you are driving, when the power steering fails randomly, the warning chime is not heard. The only way you would know it has failed is if you look down at the information center in the dash and catch the alert - or you try to make a turn. As you can imagine, finding out your steering has failed in the middle of a turn is incredibly terrifying and it is only by the grace of God that we have not had a wreck up to this point. We immediately stopped driving this car once this issue presented itself as it is not safe to drive. The dealer just made me aware that the failure was caused by the steering torque angle sensor. I had just recently had the power steering motor replaced because of the same exact problem. As it turns out, there is an outstanding product safety recall for the steering torque angle sensor: 14116B. However, my Saturn Aura was manufactured in 2009 making it ineligible for the safety recall. The recall only covers Auras (and other similar GM cars) manufactured through mid-2008. It is clear that this recall should be expanded to cover my vehicle for both of the aforementioned failures.

2009 Saturn Aura recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2009 Saturn Aura.
- Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
- Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
- Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.
- Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will perform one of four bulletins. Parts are not currently available. GM expects to send an interim notification around May 28, 2014. When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter to come in to have the applicable bulletin applied. Bulletin 14115 covers model year 2004-2007 Saturn Ion, 2009-2010 Chevrolet HHR and 2010 Chevrolet Cobalts. Dealers will replace the EPS motor. Bulletin 14116 covers model year 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from March 1, 2008, through June 27, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly. Bulletin 14117 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from February 1, 2008, through February 28, 2008. Dealers will replace the torque sensor assembly and EPS motor controller unit. Bulletin 14118 covers model year 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura built from October 1, 2007, through January 31, 2008. Dealers will replace the EPS motor controller unit. The recall began on July 17, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668. GM's number for this recall is N140115. Note: GM bulletin number 14119 will be implemented for model year 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet HHR (non-turbo) and model year 2003 Saturn ION to provide EPS Motor replacement for the life of the vehicle.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
- Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On these vehicles, the tabs on the transmission shift cable end may fracture and separate.
- Consequence: If the tabs were to fracture and separate, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. The driver would be able to move the shifter to 'PARK' and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in 'PARK.' The vehicle may not be able to be restarted and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer over the cable end or replace the shift cable as necessary. This service will be performed free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 9, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

I've owned my Saturn for over two years now and it's been fantastic. The ride is smooth and it gets great gas mileage for a V6, at 25 miles per gallon. I really appreciate the Bluetooth and XM features, as well as the OnStar directions. It's such a great car for such a reasonable price. It's a shame that Saturn is no longer around, but I'm grateful for the time I've had with this car.
-
I really appreciate the style and comfort of the whole package. I couldn't be happier!
-
I must say, I absolutely love my Saturn! It looks so beautiful outside. Although, I have had some issues with it, but I can't really complain since I bought it used. However, when it came to getting it fixed at a GM dealership, it was quite a challenge. I have called Saturn Customer Support and every GM dealership within 100 miles, but not a single one would work on my car. I was under the impression that GM dealerships had to work on your car, but apparently, it is up to the General Manager of the store. So, if you don't live close to a Saturn Dealership, you might have some trouble getting it fixed at a GM dealership. I haven't had the best of luck with any vehicles I've owned, so maybe it's my fault for not choosing the right one. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up!
-
Congratulations on your new (used) Saturn Aura! It's no surprise that people take a second look when you drive by - it's a stylish car with beautiful leather and rims. It's great to hear that you found a car with lots of pick-up and speed that you love. It sounds like you made a great choice when you saw it, drove it, and bought it. Enjoy your new ride!
-
Wow, you've owned over 30 cars/trucks over the years! That's quite impressive, especially with a family of young drivers. You've had quite the variety of brands, including Nissan, Toyota, Renault, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Dodge, Plymouth, Mitsubishi, and more. One of your favourites was the Toyota Sienna mini van, but you also enjoyed driving the Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, and Saab 9-3. The Saturn Aura XR-4 was the clear winner for you, with its unbeatable combination of price, features, safety, and fuel efficiency. It sounds like you made a great choice with the Aura XR-4's 6 speed automatic transmission!

I completely understand and agree with the previous review regarding the car's transmission. It seems to hunt and downshift too quickly, which can make it feel erratic and jerky, especially at low speeds. Despite having it checked by the dealer, they claim that this is how it is supposed to work. Additionally, I concur that the steering wheel control buttons are too small and difficult to use. I would also like to add that I have noticed a flaw in the aerodynamics of the car. When travelling at speeds of 50 mph or faster, and only the rear window(s) are opened, the closed front windows and sunroof vibrate quite badly, and the air pressure in the car can be painful to the ears. The dealer's solution was to crack the front windows or sunroof, but I do not believe that this is an acceptable fix.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Saturn Aura XE. Unfortunately, I had some trouble with the transmission and had to have it towed on Aug 6. Although the vehicle was returned the next day, it had to be towed again on the 7th. It was a frustrating experience as Saturn Corp provided conflicting information about the repair timeline and the part's availability. We later found out that the dealership that was supposed to make the repairs had switched to Mazda and couldn't help us. Despite the initial difficulties, I'm happy to say that the issue was eventually resolved. Thank you for listening to my story!

I strongly recommend choosing a different vehicle. Despite purchasing this car only 3 months ago, I have experienced ongoing issues with the ESC traction lights. Unfortunately, the dealerships have not been able to provide a solution and have suggested costly and ineffective measures. As a result, I have decided to trade in the car and take the loss. While I am disappointed with my experience, I remain confident in my decision to not purchase another GM product.

I have had a poor experience with this car and the company. Despite being a loyal GM customer, my first and only Saturn has been plagued with electrical problems and common defects. Unfortunately, my interactions with the company have been unproductive. I would caution anyone considering this car to be wary.

I purchased my car in March 2010 with 41K miles on it. Although I was aware of a transmission issue, I decided to buy it anyway. To ensure a smooth driving experience, I had the dealer replace the transmission. Since then, the car has been running great. Despite some road noise from the tires and squeaky brakes, maintaining the air pressure at 34 seems to alleviate these issues. I am pleased to report an average of 24 mpg. However, the dealer sold the car with only 2 sets of tires instead of 4 matching ones, which may be the cause of the noise and strange tire rotation sounds. I plan to replace the brakes and tires soon. I am proud to drive such a stylish car and enjoy the attention it receives from other drivers. I am confident that it will last for a long time.
