The Mercury Montego is a nameplate that was applied to three separate generations of vehicles marketed by the Mercury division of Ford Motor Company. Taking its name from Montego Bay, Jamaica, the nameplate made its first appearance for 1967 in the Canadian market as part of the Mercury-derived Meteor model line. For 1968, the Mercury Montego made its debut across North America, becoming the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Torino intermediate-size model line for two generations.

For the 1977 model year, Ford revised the intermediate-size product ranges of both its Ford and Mercury divisions; as part of a mid-cycle update, Mercury discontinued the Montego nameplate and expanded the Mercury Cougar line to include a full range of sedans and wagons (with the Ford Gran Torino becoming the Ford LTD II).

After a 28-year absence, the Montego nameplate was revived for the 2005 model year, this time applied to a full-size sedan. Slotted in size between the Mercury Milan and Grand Marquis, the 2005 Montego was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Five Hundred. For the 2008 model year, the Montego adopted the nameplate of the car it had replaced, becoming the final generation of the Mercury Sable.

THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2005 MERCURY VEHICLES BOTH IN THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND THE 6-SPEED. I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY HAVE NOT HAD A RECALL ON THE TRANSMISSIONS SINCE THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET WITH THIS SAME EXACT PROBLEM. MY FIRST MONTEGO PASSED THE LEMON LAW WITH THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT. NOW THE SECOND MONTEGO IS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AFTER ONLY 70,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD TOO MANY CLOSE CALLS DRIVING THIS VEHICLE WITH THE INCONSISTENCY IN ACCELERATION. AND THE BUCKING AND THUMPING WHEN BRAKING IS SEVERE. THE REVERSE GEAR IS UNUSABLE, AS SOON AS YOU PUT IT IN REVERSE IT SHUTS THE CAR OFF. THE TRANSMISSION JERKS AND WILL NOT STEADILY ACCELERATE AT RANDOM TIMES. THE CAR WILL RANDOMLY SHUT OFF WHEN GOING DOWN THE ROAD LOSING ALL POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKING ABILITY. THIS IS PARTICULARLY A PROBLEM CONSIDERING I HAVE AN INFANT IN THE BACKSEAT MOST EVERY TRIP. I SAW THIS LAWSUIT AND EVERY SINGLE THING LISTED ABOUT THE CVT TRANSMISSIONS HAS HAPPENED AND IS STILL HAPPENING TO MY 2005 MONTEGO.

CAME BACK A FEW HOURS LATER AND GAUGES WORKED BUT CHECK ENGINE, TRANSMISSION AND CHARGING SYSTEMS LIGHTS WERE ON. I PUT IT IN GEAR BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE ISSUE WAS GONE AND AS SOON AS I GOT TO ABOUT 1500 RPM MY GAUGES WENT BLACK SO I STOPPED AND WHEN THE IDLE SPEED DROPPED BACK DOWN MY GAUGES CAME BACK ON. I TRIED MY HEADLIGHTS AND THEY GO OUT EVERY TIME MY GAUGES GO OUT, WHICH IS ANY TIME I GET OVER 1500 RPM.

    I don't usually write reviews, but I wanted to share my experience with this car. While there are some downsides, there are also some positives. The ride is comfortable and roomy, with a huge trunk and the ability to easily fit three adults in the back. The safety ratings are impressive, with a 5-star rating for the year, and the handling is excellent for a large car. However, it's important to consider the negatives before making a purchase. The gas mileage is not as good as advertised, with real-world numbers closer to 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The brakes are also a concern, as I had to replace the rear brakes (rotors and pads) twice in just 30,000 miles. The door seals are also poorly designed, causing water to collect and potentially rust the door from the inside out. Additionally, the air conditioning has a common problem where warm air blows when idling. Overall, I would recommend considering all factors before making a decision. Hope this helps!In their defense, when you run the engine above 1500 rpm, the car blows out ice-cold air. Unfortunately, the only fix offered by Ford is a new compressor, which costs $500. Another common problem is engine stalling or stumbling when starting. I was told to clean the MAF sensor and throttle body, but the issue returned after 6 months. However, the engine itself is powerful and runs well once the issues are resolved. The transmission sometimes clunks and hunts for gears, and the CV axles needed to be replaced at 56k miles. I may sound critical of this car, but I believe it's important to be honest. This is why foreign car offerings are doing so well here.

It had so many great features like seat warmers, a moonroof, leather seats, and even a beeping back bumper. However, I've had some issues with the exterior and engine quality. Unfortunately, I've had to deal with a lot of problems with this vehicle. Some of them were minor, like the trunk latch not working and the brakes needing to be replaced after only 30K miles (which was covered by a manufacturer recall). But there were also some major issues, like the air conditioning needing to be replaced and the transmission failing after only 63K miles. While the Premier AWD model may be priced over $30,000 when fully loaded, it may be more reasonable to consider the model priced in the $24-26,000 range. It's possible that supply will catch up with demand, and resale value may decrease. In a few years, it may be possible to purchase this car at a lower price with rebates.     Your car is fine and the dealership is outstanding. It has a lot of room, but the horsepower is not enough for the CVT transmission. The light is very good, but the outside antenna is no good. The car frame is weak and the ride is noisy. It would be better if the center transmission was put back on the steering column.

    As a Professional Engineer with many years of automotive experience, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with my 2005 Mercury Montego, Premier FWD. It strikes an excellent balance between fuel economy and performance, and after 7600 miles of driving, I averaged an impressive 28.5 mpg on the highway and 20.2 mpg in the city. The inside space and trunk size are best in class, and the overall quality is excellent. The driving and handling performance are also top-notch. For those who complain about engine size and power, I suggest getting yourself a sports car and disqualifying yourself from commenting on this excellent family car, which is very appropriate considering current gas prices!

    I really love my Montego CVT AWD! It handles so well for a car of its size and has great acceleration. Last night, I had some fun on the highway and let me tell you, the CVT has a fantastic ratio spread. The engine, despite having only 203 hp, is pretty snappy above 60 mph. (I even floored it around 75 and the tacho went up to 6700 rpm, and I went from 75 to 90 in around 2 seconds!) By the way, I wasn't under the influence of anything, I was just in a great mood and wanted to drive fast. I can't wait to see how much more driving pleasure the new Montego will have with its 3.5 liter engine!

    The main reason I switched from the Aviator was to get a high-performance car that would give me more miles per gallon. The Montego does just that, with a range of 10 to 21 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway. I'm very satisfied with the features and extras that the car has to offer. The seating is quite comfortable, and I especially like the recliner. Even my gas station attendant asks me where I've been, so I know I made a solid decision when selecting this car. As a Ford man, I appreciate the smoothness with which the car performs. It's firm and glides beautifully on the roads. I also appreciate the safety devices attached to the car, which make me feel secure.
