The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2013 Porsche Cayenne problems

The 2013 Porsche Cayenne has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, start/stop system, and the dashboard.

Transmission failure is a significant issue that can be expensive to repair. The transmission in the 2013 Cayenne is prone to failure, which can be a significant expense for owners. This issue has been a significant concern for Porsche's branding, as repair costs for Porsches are exorbitantly high, even for the smallest of issues.

The start/stop system, which includes the starter motor and battery, has also been reported to cause problems in the 2013 Cayenne. This system is designed to save fuel by turning off the engine when the vehicle is stopped and restarting it when the driver presses the accelerator. However, the starter motor and battery in the 2013 Cayenne have been reported to fail, causing the vehicle to have starting problems.

The dashboard in the 2013 Cayenne has also been reported to have issues. Some owners have reported creaking and vibrating noises coming from the dashboard, which can be distracting and uncomfortable during driving. Additionally, the dashboard warning lights, such as the check engine light, abs/psm light, and airbag light, have been reported to come on due to various mechanical and electrical problems.

In conclusion, the 2013 Porsche Cayenne has several common problems related to the transmission, start/stop system, and dashboard. These issues can be expensive to repair and can affect the overall driving experience of the vehicle. Owners of the 2013 Cayenne should be aware of these issues and consider regular maintenance and inspections to prevent and address these problems.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: WP1AD2A28DL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The Drive train consists of an engine, transmission, transfercase, driveshafts and differentials. The Transfercase has failed prior to the normal life cycle. Porsche recognizes this problem on this series of SUV and extends the warranty for 10 years and unlimited mileage. Porsche announced this extension in June 2024. However this does not cover the early models in this series 2011-2013 with the same drivetrain and transfercase. So in effect this failure of the transfer case is not covered on 2014 - 2011 Porsche Cayenne's models with the same transfercase because Porsche delayed the notification to customers. Even though the SUV may have low mileage, they will not warranty or cover my failure.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
  • VIN: WP1AF2A27DL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Engine light came on and vehicle decelerated while making a turn in traffic. Based on the owners manual and code test, it comes up as a DPF issue. We could have been seriously injured had the oncoming traffic been closer to us or had someone attempted to follow me on the turn. When the car lost power, I could not accelerate to complete my turn. The problem has been duplicated by my husband who has some mechanical expertise, but the next step would be to take it to a dealer. It is available for inspection, but it is not safe to drive. The check engine light and the glow plug lamp came on at the same time. It happened once before on the interstate coming across I-80 on the interstate. In the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service, we were able to pull over, shut off and restart the engine which cleared the code for the rest of the trip. Then it didn’t do this again for nearly two months.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-10
  • VIN: WP1AD2A26DL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: PURCHASED A 2013 CAYENNE PORSCHE GTS WITH 67K MILES ON IT. NOTICED A KIND OF THUMPING SOUND WHEN ACCELERATING, USUALLY APPEARING AT 3K RPMS. VEHICLE SHUDDERS AND ALMOST FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC TO DIAGNOSE THE FAULT AND THEY IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT IT WAS, ENGINE TRANSFER CASE FAILURE. THIS IS DUE TO A DESIGN FLAW ALLOWING WATER INTO THE TRANSFER CASE THAT PORSCHE IS AWARE OF AND YET TO ADDRESS. ON SOME OCCASIONS PORSCHE WILL PAY FOR THE $5K REPAIR BUT THE PART IS STILL REPLACED WITH A TRANSFER CASE WITH THE SAME FLAW. TRANSFER CASE FAILURE CAN LEAD TO A SUDDEN LOSE OF POWER AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY IF SOMEONE IS TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. HIGHLY RECOMMEND ADDRESSING THIS WITH A RECALL FOR 2013 AND 2014 CAYENNES. I HAVE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN LOSE OF POWER DUE TO TRANSFER CASE FAILURE, NEATLY RESULTING IN A HIGHWAY COLLISION.

Negative 2013 Porsche Cayenne car reviews

  1. Nicola Carroll 2024-11-28

Congratulations on your new car purchase! It sounds like the car is running well and you are enjoying it. However, it seems that the voice control feature for the phone is not included in the car, which can be inconvenient, especially in a hands-free state. It's surprising that such an important feature is not included in a car of this price range. It's important to be aware of this before making a purchase. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Gianni Pagac 2024-05-11

I had a negative experience with my 2012 Cayenne S and encountered several issues with the car. However, I believe that these problems were due to manufacturing issues and not related to my driving. The AC broke down twice, the gear box broke twice, the entire headliner came down due to bad glue, the cooling system had a leak, the window lifters failed, and the control knobs turned gooey like marshmallows. I found Porsche repairs to be generally overpriced, and some simple repairs, such as a battery exchange, cost around $900. It's important to note that Porsche designed it in a way that only they can do it, which can be frustrating. If you're considering buying a Porsche, it's important to do your research and be aware of the potential costs. Porsche is owned by Volkswagen, which has had some issues in the past, including the diesel emissions scandal. However, I believe that Porsche is a reputable brand and has many loyal customers. It's important to make an informed decision when purchasing a car, and I encourage you to consider all factors before making a decision.

  3. Barney McCullough 2024-02-21

After less than six months of ownership and less than 3,000 miles of driving, I have experienced some issues with my new 2013 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. I brought my car in for loud clanging noises when I backed up, and they replaced my entire catalytic converter. Ten days later, due to different clanging noises, they replaced all of my muffler tips and electronic key fobs as the car was not recognizing them. It has been frustrating, but I am hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon. I have heard good things about the Range Rover Sport, but I am still happy with my purchase.

  4. Jake Leffler 2024-02-16

I recently purchased a 2012 Cayenne turbo and overall, I am very impressed with this wonderful piece of machinery. The design, looks, ride and engine are all great. However, I have experienced some issues with the brakes. Despite 4 visits to the dealer resulting in new rotors and pads at roughly 15,000 miles due to an unbearable squeaking noise, the issue still persists. Unfortunately, I have not received a call back from the dealer in 4 weeks. As a customer who has invested $130K, I was hoping for a better customer service experience.

Positive 2013 Porsche Cayenne car reviews

  1. Stanton Kovacek 2024-10-24

Overall, this is a great car with impressive performance, ride, and handling. The interior is also very nice. However, while the quality is very good, it falls slightly short of the standards set by BMW. The interior looks nice and has some great tech features, but it doesn't feel quite as solid as you might expect for the price point. That being said, the Porsche is still a very good vehicle in its own right, but it may not be the best option when compared to other luxury cars. For example, I have BMWs with 200k miles on them, and the interior is still tighter and has fewer rattles than the Porsche. Overall, though, it's a great car that's definitely worth considering.

  2. Camryn Glover 2024-10-07

I hope you're doing well! I've had this car for a while now and it's been great. I've put about 100,000 miles on it and it's still running strong. I'm having a bit of trouble changing the clock though. Any tips?

  3. Ezequiel Parisian 2024-09-22

I've had this car for 5 months now and I still regret not test driving it before signing the papers. I just got out of a RRS so I thought I'd give the Cayenne a try. The car is incredibly fast, almost to the point where driving at limit speeds can be boring. However, the biggest thing that bothers me is that I'm not quite sure what it is. It's not quite an SUV and it certainly isn't a 911. Next time, I think I'd rather go with a RR or X5 because if I wanted a sports car, I'd go pick up a proper 2dr. Also, the Cayenne felt very similar to the Panamera, which in my opinion, doesn't quite know if it's a sedan or a sports car either.

  4. Shad Schmitt 2024-09-20

If you have kids or need room for your family and want to enjoy a sporty drive for yourself, the Cayenne is the perfect answer for you. It drives like a 911 but with enough room like most mid-size SUVs.

I purchased a 2013 Cayenne Base model last August with only 55,045 miles on it. Although I don't drive it often, I absolutely adore the sleek and functional cabin, and the smooth and quiet ride is simply amazing. Additionally, the acceleration is fantastic when I need it. Since I don't drive much, it's great on fuel too. While I would love to have a 911, the Cayenne is perfect for my needs, especially with grandkids of different ages. I am overjoyed to finally own a Porsche! 😊
