Porsche Cayenne problems

The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.
The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.
First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)
The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.
The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common Porsche Cayenne problems
The Porsche Cayenne is a luxury SUV that has been popular among consumers for its performance and features. However, like any vehicle, the Cayenne has had its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Heavy Gear Changes & Noisy Transmission: Early Porsche Cayenne owners commonly experienced a heavy downshift from the transmission, accompanied by much louder gear shifts and clunking sounds from the transmission. This problem is often misdiagnosed as a physical failure in the transmission itself, when the more likely cause is in fact the valve body assembly within the transmission.
- Cooling System Problems: The 2004 Porsche Cayenne has had a high number of complaints related to the cooling system, with multiple cars experiencing plastic coolant lines breaking and the center carrier bearing of the driveshaft failing. This has resulted in some cars refusing to start, and repairs can cost upwards of $3,000 in some instances.
- Drivetrain Problems: The 2011 Porsche Cayenne has had complaints from customers about overheating at only 15,000 miles, as well as a complete engine failure at under 40,000 miles. Premature brake wear is another known issue, potentially happening as early as 21,000 miles and costing $3,000 to fix.
- High Maintenance and Repair Costs: The Porsche Cayenne has been reported to have higher than average maintenance and repair costs, with an estimated $20,552 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This is more than the industry average for luxury SUV models by $4,838.
It is important to note that not all Porsche Cayenne models will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, these common issues are worth considering when purchasing a used Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche recognizes this problem on this series of SUV and extends the warranty for 10 years and unlimited mileage. Porsche announced this extension in June 2024. However this does not cover the early models in this series 2011-2013 with the same drivetrain and transfercase. So in effect this failure of the transfer case is not covered on 2014 - 2011 Porsche Cayenne's models with the same transfercase because Porsche delayed the notification to customers. Even though the SUV may have low mileage, they will not warranty or cover my failure.

- Summary: **Subject**: Urgent Safety Concern: Headlight Condensation and Water Damage in 2015-2018 Porsche Cayenne 958.2 Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a serious safety issue with the LED matrix headlights on my 2016 Porsche Cayenne GTS (958.2). The problem involves severe condensation buildup within the headlight assembly, leading to water damage and electrical failures. This defect has caused my headlights to fail, particularly during nighttime driving in heavy rain, which significantly reduced visibility. This failure could have resulted in a major accident, putting my life and the lives of others at risk. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue first became noticeable after a rainstorm, where condensation started to build up inside the headlights. Despite multiple visits to my local Porsche dealership, where they confirmed the problem and attempted repairs, the issue continues to persist. I also notified Porsche corporate directly, but neither the dealership nor Porsche offered any assistance or permanent resolution. Both have failed to take responsibility for what I believe is a widespread defect, as I have found numerous similar reports from other owners. No warning lights or messages were displayed prior to the headlight failure, which made the issue even more dangerous. Without any prior indication, I was left driving without functioning headlights at night, in poor weather conditions. Given the potential for catastrophic consequences, I strongly urge NHTSA to investigate this issue. A recall or other corrective action is necessary to prevent further risks to drivers. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The traction control, check engine, oil pressure, and several other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the passenger's side camshaft controller and bolts had failed. The dealer determined that both the driver's and passenger's side camshaft controllers and bolts needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the camshaft adjusters and bolts under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V368000 (Engine) associated with the VIN; however, the contact was not satisfied with the remedy for the recall. The contact stated that the dealer failed to recover all the failed bolts inside the engine. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 131,046.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2006 car that replaced my 2004 turbo. While it's not as peppy as my previous car, I've found that the transmission doesn't adapt quickly enough for spirited driving. To address this, I put it on an all-wheel dyno and it's been performing well on the first pull, although it does suffer from heat sink on the second and third pull. On the other hand, my 2004 car had some issues along the way to 100,000 miles, including losing the heating pipes and the Cardon shaft, as well as the fuel pumps. I did have to replace the rotors twice during that time, but I've had zero repair costs with my 2006 car after 20,000 miles of driving. Thanks for listening!

I owned a 930 Turbo for about 7 years until Porsche announced the Cayenne. As a parent of two kids, I decided to sell the 930 and order the Cayenne S. Although the 930 was much quicker, the Cayenne made me forget about missing my old love. It is incredibly comfortable and fits like a glove. Everything is so convenient, smooth, and user-friendly, with grab handles where you need them. It truly makes you feel loved and special. The Cayenne has plenty of power, handles very nimbly, stops on a dime, and always feels safe. Living in the country, I have a great time eating up the roads. I have never had a single problem with my car, and it has only been in the shop for an oil change and 20K service.

Hey there! Have you ever wondered how Porsche manages to build an SUV that handles like a sports car? Well, let me tell you, it's quite impressive! Although it may not handle exactly like your Alfa Romeo Giulia, when you put it in Sport mode, this beast of a car handles just as well, if not better, than the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio that I recently drove for 2 days. And get this, it's a 10-year-old car! That's simply amazing! Let's talk about some of the pros: it has a sports car level of handling and acceleration, it's spacious, and it has very respectable off-road capability. Of course, there are some cons too, like the fact that the 4.8L V8 is quite thirsty and the ride can be a bit rough. Even for a 2008 car, the in-car technology like Bluetooth is lacking. But overall, I think this car is definitely worth considering if you're in the market for an SUV with some serious power and handling. What do you think?

I absolutely love my Porsche Cayenne GTS! The ride is fantastic, the sound system is amazing, and the interior is top-notch. The paint job is still in great condition even after a couple of years since I had it treated. Recently, I took a 1,400-mile trip to Arizona and back with three adults and luggage, and the car performed beautifully. I was able to maintain a speed of 77 mph while getting 21 mpg. Although I had to sell my Cayenne due to my age and the need for a car with radar, I still miss it dearly. However, I'm happy to report that my new Mustang Mach-E is living up to all the hype. I'm confident that the new owner of my Porsche will take great care of it.

I purchased my 2012 S in September 2016 with 45k on the odometer. It came with Bose, 18ways, and dubs. I researched local mechanics to see if I could purchase my own parts for installation and found many former dealer mechanics who understand the logic. I have replaced all filters and front pads with rotors just to be sure. I change my own oil (thanks to YouTube). The car is still running on its original plugs at 66k. It's normally aspirated and the mpg (17.5 overall) suggests the logic holds, especially with a smooth idle. I had an X5 for a decade and averaged 16.5 with 225hp and a six. This 400hp eight screams, you can toss your blue pills. I drove the six, but a buddy told me to drive the eight before pulling the trigger, and I'm still thanking him two years later. For a one mpg difference, this bad boy is oh so light on its feet. (Note: I'm running regular gas only.) The Bose is more than you need; you may hurt yourself with it, but Floyd never sounded so good. At night on the interstate at 80 with the stereo tuned to your liking, you are there. Where there is, is your own personal choice, but it's probably near your glory days. I have never spent as much time in the 90s inadvertently; you'd best set the cruise. Fit and finish is boffo. I rubbed this out with Meguiars compound and waxed it, and the metal flake gray is an inch deep, like nothing I've ever owned. I'm a big guy, and this thing swallows me whole. I don't know about the back seats, but my passengers are all smiling. I paid 36k and bought a 4-year bumper-to-bumper for 3600. Piece of mind, baby! At the time, a new Traverse would have cost me the same. You choose. Forget the bucket list; zip up your big boy pants and get one of these. It's about the day-to-day. Job leave something to desire? Make the drive to and fro nirvana. Later; now I have to go for a drive!

This SUV drives more like a sports sedan than an SUV. It's an absolute blast to drive on a daily basis. Additionally, it has a 7,700 towing capacity, making it one of the few competing vehicles that has both of these qualities. The V6, while not as speedy as the S and turbo models, performs quite well and will be more than adequate for most owners. Although the vehicle comes with some build quality bugs, most of them are only minor annoyances. However, they are still completely unacceptable for a premium brand like Porsche. If you can overlook these small problems, this vehicle may be perfect for you. Otherwise, it's best to look elsewhere.

'04 Cayenne S $71,000. I had thought that the Cayenne would be a step up from my '02 BMW 4.4 X5. However, I found that the Cayenne did not match the quality, luxury, and dependability of my BMW. Unfortunately, I experienced several issues with the Cayenne, including a wheel that was off-center by 2 inches, pulling to the left, and changing lanes within 100 yards. The wheel also shook badly between 55-85 mph, making it hard to hold. Despite going back to the dealer 5 times within the first month for these issues, the problems persisted. Additionally, the remote keys did not work, and I had to use the key to open the car, but then couldn't get the alarm off to start the car, which had to be towed to the dealer. The radio also started cutting in and out, and the front doors rattled when the stereo was turned up. Despite having 3 wheel alignments, the tires were worn out at only 7,000 miles. Unfortunately, I had to sell the car at 7,500 miles, only 4 months after purchasing it, and suffered a $25,000 loss. It's worth noting that there have been over 145 technical service bulletins issued on this 2-year-old model to date.

I have brought my car back to the dealer multiple times, including four times for service, but they have repeatedly denied the existence of any problems. However, after taking it to a Porsche specialist and running a computer diagnostic, it was discovered that most of the car's systems had failed. The dealer has now handed the car over to Porsche, but there has been no communication or updates in the two weeks since. Given the numerous issues with the car, including malfunctioning climate control, seat memory, and engine timing, I believe that a replacement is warranted, especially considering the significant cost of $104,000.

This is my third Porsche. The car is exceptionally fast and handles superbly well, especially in Sport or Sport+ mode. The seats are comfortable and there is ample room in the back seat. The battery provides a speedy 20 miles of range on fully electric, making short errands a breeze. While the MSRP of around $91K for my vehicle may seem steep, it is worth it for the premium package and ventilated seats. The hybrid technology is truly amazing and the engineers have done an excellent job. The e-hybrid is the one to get over the S, especially with the government subsidy. However, if I were buying and not leasing, I would opt for the base model. Although there are some fit and finish quality issues, such as the paint scratching easily and panels not aligning well, these are minor compared to the overall performance and luxury of the car.
