Porsche Cayenne problems

The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.
The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.
First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)
The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.
The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common Porsche Cayenne problems
The Porsche Cayenne is a luxury SUV that has been popular among consumers for its performance and features. However, like any vehicle, the Cayenne has had its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Heavy Gear Changes & Noisy Transmission: Early Porsche Cayenne owners commonly experienced a heavy downshift from the transmission, accompanied by much louder gear shifts and clunking sounds from the transmission. This problem is often misdiagnosed as a physical failure in the transmission itself, when the more likely cause is in fact the valve body assembly within the transmission.
- Cooling System Problems: The 2004 Porsche Cayenne has had a high number of complaints related to the cooling system, with multiple cars experiencing plastic coolant lines breaking and the center carrier bearing of the driveshaft failing. This has resulted in some cars refusing to start, and repairs can cost upwards of $3,000 in some instances.
- Drivetrain Problems: The 2011 Porsche Cayenne has had complaints from customers about overheating at only 15,000 miles, as well as a complete engine failure at under 40,000 miles. Premature brake wear is another known issue, potentially happening as early as 21,000 miles and costing $3,000 to fix.
- High Maintenance and Repair Costs: The Porsche Cayenne has been reported to have higher than average maintenance and repair costs, with an estimated $20,552 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This is more than the industry average for luxury SUV models by $4,838.
It is important to note that not all Porsche Cayenne models will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, these common issues are worth considering when purchasing a used Porsche Cayenne.

Porsche recognizes this problem on this series of SUV and extends the warranty for 10 years and unlimited mileage. Porsche announced this extension in June 2024. However this does not cover the early models in this series 2011-2013 with the same drivetrain and transfercase. So in effect this failure of the transfer case is not covered on 2014 - 2011 Porsche Cayenne's models with the same transfercase because Porsche delayed the notification to customers. - Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: **Subject**: Urgent Safety Concern: Headlight Condensation and Water Damage in 2015-2018 Porsche Cayenne 958.2 Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a serious safety issue with the LED matrix headlights on my 2016 Porsche Cayenne GTS (958.2). The problem involves severe condensation buildup within the headlight assembly, leading to water damage and electrical failures. This defect has caused my headlights to fail, particularly during nighttime driving in heavy rain, which significantly reduced visibility. This failure could have resulted in a major accident, putting my life and the lives of others at risk. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue first became noticeable after a rainstorm, where condensation started to build up inside the headlights. Despite multiple visits to my local Porsche dealership, where they confirmed the problem and attempted repairs, the issue continues to persist. I also notified Porsche corporate directly, but neither the dealership nor Porsche offered any assistance or permanent resolution. Both have failed to take responsibility for what I believe is a widespread defect, as I have found numerous similar reports from other owners. No warning lights or messages were displayed prior to the headlight failure, which made the issue even more dangerous. Without any prior indication, I was left driving without functioning headlights at night, in poor weather conditions. Given the potential for catastrophic consequences, I strongly urge NHTSA to investigate this issue. A recall or other corrective action is necessary to prevent further risks to drivers. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The traction control, check engine, oil pressure, and several other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the passenger's side camshaft controller and bolts had failed. The dealer determined that both the driver's and passenger's side camshaft controllers and bolts needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the camshaft adjusters and bolts under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V368000 (Engine) associated with the VIN; however, the contact was not satisfied with the remedy for the recall. The contact stated that the dealer failed to recover all the failed bolts inside the engine. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 131,046.

Have had many luxury SUV's (LR,BMW & MB); hands down the Porsche Cayenne Diesel is the best of the bunch. Still as solid as a rock! No issues. Gets 35 MPG on a Trip! Fit & Finish is great! After 5 years won't even consider selling it.

The Cayenne's air suspension provides excellent handling, allowing for high-speed curves without any noticeable roll. Acceleration is quick and responsive, and the rigid body, high ground clearance, and lockable differential make it a true off-roader. It's impressive how it comes close to a 911 in terms of performance, and yet still maintains its off-road capabilities. Overall, if you're in the market for a Porsche, the Cayenne is definitely the best choice in terms of value for your money.

I researched every SUV from the H3 to Lexus to BMW, etc. After driving and researching every other SUV, I tried the Cayenne S and immediately fell in love. I have never had a single disappointing moment. I definitely recommend the V8, but everything else is optional. The car comes extremely well-equipped as is. The gas mileage is better than expected, with 21mpg on the highway and 18mpg in town. As someone who is 6'7

I purchased my Cayenne hybrid last year and have driven it for about 8000 miles. The build quality of the interior is great, with practicality in mind without being overdone or over-engineered. While some may find the plastic switches to be a downside, I appreciate that they help keep the weight down. The car has a very steep learning curve, but once you take the time to understand how it works, it can achieve most of what it promises. For example, one reviewer complained that the in-car navigation cannot be cancelled, but it can be cancelled easily by waving your hand in front of the navigation. The proximity sensor will bring up optional choices to cancel the current destination. I am very pleased with the comfort of the car, especially during the harsh winter. The fuel economy is also great if you know how to use it. Cruise control on high speed can save you a lot of fuel, especially during downhill and soft braking. I only refilled my tank 6 times from the initial 100 miles on the odometer (I admit I charge my car a lot). With my current driving habits, I expect this car to last for a long time. Porsche engineering is top-notch, and you truly get what you pay for with such a powerful and complicated machine. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend it to others. One last thing I want to mention is that the Cayenne hybrid offers the best of both worlds - the option to drive a hybrid or a Porsche. If you prefer a more fuel-efficient and comfortable ride, driving it like a hybrid will deliver just that. However, if you're looking for a more thrilling driving experience, switching to sport plus mode will give you great handling and acceleration. It's important to note that fuel economy may suffer in this mode, with a mileage of around 23mpg in pure gas engine. With the Cayenne hybrid, you have the freedom to choose your driving style and enjoy the ride.

I have owned four BMW X5s, all but the last being Sport models, and I have been a very satisfied owner of each. However, the last one, a 2019 X5, was a huge disappointment. It seems that BMW had switched to fully electronic steering since my last purchase, which was a mistake. The car had no steering feedback and felt lifeless when on center. The electronics were frustrating and seemed to be there just for the sake of technology. I didn't like it at all. I only owned it for three weeks before trading it for a 2014 Cayenne GTS with 30,000 miles on it. It was like going from driving a soccer mom mobile to a high-performance go-kart. I was particularly interested in this model year because it was the last one with the big, naturally aspirated V-8 engine. The acceleration is incredible, and the handling is precise. The car doesn't rely on electronics to entertain you, which I appreciate as an analog guy in a digital world. This car demands your attention and input, and it rewards you. I would suggest putting away your smartphone and finishing your frappuccino before driving this one. That's not to say it's not civilized; the fit and finish are legendary, and nothing sounds like that V-8 when you turn the ignition.

I recently purchased a Cayenne 2020 S, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues within the first week. There were four (4) different rattling noises, a sudden jolting forward when trying to slow down, and an app that rarely connects. I am currently in communication with the dealership regarding these issues, as they claim that they are normal. However, I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA and will continue to pursue other means until a resolution is reached. While I would not recommend purchasing the Cayenne due to my experience, I encourage you to do your own research and make an informed decision.

I have brought my car back to the dealer multiple times, including four times for service, but they have repeatedly denied the existence of any problems. However, after taking it to a Porsche specialist and running a computer diagnostic, it was discovered that most of the car's systems had failed. The dealer has now handed the car over to Porsche, but there has been no communication or updates in the two weeks since. Given the numerous issues with the car, including malfunctioning climate control, seat memory, and engine timing, I believe that a replacement is warranted, especially considering the significant cost of $104,000.

This is the 3.0 Diesel. Despite a minor issue with the computer connector shortly after purchase, my Cayenne has been a reliable and efficient vehicle. It handles beautifully and has comfortable, high-quality seats. It easily tows my 6,000+ pound boat and gets great mileage, averaging around 30 mpg on the highway. While the oil changes can be expensive, they are required less frequently than on other engines. The Porsche Dynamic Lighting System (PDLS) has some great features, but the sharp cutoff at the top of the beam can be a bit dangerous on hilly terrain. However, this is a minor issue and does not detract from the overall quality of the vehicle. The speedometer may read slightly high, but this is a common issue with all Cayennes and does not affect the performance of the car. The recent Diesel fix has made the vehicle compliant with emission standards, and while the transmission may not be as responsive as before, the engine still runs well. Overall, the Cayenne is a fantastic vehicle that I highly recommend.Porsche must take immediate action to address the unsafe headlights and the grossly inaccurate odometer and speedometer. It is unacceptable for a company of Porsche's caliber to ignore such serious issues. While Porsche has faced criticism for its involvement in Dieselgate, it cannot continue to overlook the inaccuracies in its speedometers and odometers. It is time for Porsche to take responsibility and make the necessary changes to ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers.

I had a really scary experience with my car recently. The steering wheel got locked and the brakes didn't work, so I couldn't make a turn and ended up crashing at 18 miles per hour. I'm so grateful that there weren't any incoming cars, otherwise it could have been much worse. As soon as it's repaired, I'm planning on selling this car.

The brakes on my 2019 Porsche Cayenne tend to squeal at low speeds, which is quite bothersome. According to my Porsche dealer, this is a common issue with all 2019 Porsche Cayenne models and there is no immediate solution. I find it unacceptable to have such noisy brakes in a vehicle that costs over $90,000. This experience has left me disappointed and I would not consider purchasing another one in the future.
