2001 Volkswagen New beetle problems
The Volkswagen New Beetle is a compact car, introduced by Volkswagen in 1997, drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the original Beetle, the New Beetle has its engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with luggage storage in the rear. It was revised in 2005 and was in production until 2011, almost fourteen years since introduction.
In 2011 for the 2012 model year, a new Beetle model, the Beetle (A5), replaced the New Beetle. It is often referred to as the New Beetle as well. Various versions of this model continued to be made in Puebla, Mexico, until the final car left the assembly line on 10 July 2019.
History
At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a "retro"-themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Volkswagen Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio, the concept car was based on the platform of the Volkswagen Polo. A red cabriolet concept was featured at the Geneva Motor Show, also in 1994.
Production design approval was reached in mid-1995, with a design freeze resulting in 22 months of development time for production. In October 1995, the Volkswagen Concept Two was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, essentially an early preview of the production model due in early 1998.
Strong public reaction to the Concept One convinced the company that it should develop a production version which was launched as the New Beetle in 1997 for the 1998 model-year, based on the Golf IV's larger PQ34 platform. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo). For the 1998 model year, only the TDI compression-ignition engine was turbocharged; the spark-ignition engines were only naturally aspirated. In June 1999, Volkswagen introduced the 1.8T, which was the first turbocharged spark-ignition engine offered for the New Beetle. Volkswagen created a web site dedicated specifically to the 1.8T. A convertible was added for the 2003 model-year to replace the Volkswagen Cabrio. However, the New Beetle Convertible was never offered with a compression-ignition engine in North America. The third-generation Beetle Convertible, the successor to the New Beetle Convertible, was offered with the TDI compression-ignition engine in the USA but not in Canada, though, making it possibly the only diesel convertible car offered in North America.
The New Beetle carries many design similarities with the original VW Beetle: separate fenders, vestigial running boards, sloping headlamps, and large round taillights, as well as a high rounded roofline. It was assembled in VW's Puebla factory in Mexico.
In June 2005, Volkswagen announced a facelift of the New Beetle featuring revised bumpers, wheels, lamps, VW emblems, sharper lines and a different interior. In the USA it went on sale for the 2006 model year.

What years of VW beetles to avoid?
There are tons of years of the VW Beetle, which provides plenty of opportunities to pick out the worst ones for drivers. Some are more ideal than others. We recommend staying away from the 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2013 models. These require expensive fixes that can cause trouble as you drive.
How long do VW Beetle engines last?
Most Volkswagen vehicles will last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, although well-kept models can last even longer than that. All VWs are remarkably reliable vehicles. When it comes to longevity, the Golf, Passat, Jetta, and Beetle are known to be particularly long-lasting.
What years of Volkswagen Beetles are best?
Here are the most reliable years available for the Volkswagen Beetle:
- 1962 VW Beetle.
- 1969 VW Beetle.
- 1972 VW Beetle.
- 1998 VW Beetle.
- 1999 VW Beetle.
- 2002 VW Beetle.
- 2005 VW Beetle.
- 2008 VW Beetle.
Do VW Beetles have transmission problems?
According to one owner, they knew that transmission issues were a widely reported problem in 2003 Beetles, but their 2004 Beetle had all the same symptoms. The reports were all the same—the transmission was either hard shifting, jolting into gear, or slipping intermittently.

What was wrong with the Volkswagen Beetle?
The Beetle is praised for its longevity, lasting up to 10 years and possibly even longer with proper maintenance. Despite its reliability, the Beetle's most common problems include engine failure, faulty power locks, and faulty power windows.
Is the new VW Beetle a good car?
Based on the now obsolete Golf VI platform, the modern Beetle is enjoyable to drive and rides with poise, but it doesn't blow you away in any criteria – solid and predictable best describes the experience. There is a jacked-up version called the Dune, but it's not in any way better off-road than the regular Beetle.
Why did the New Beetle fail?
Simply put, the New Beetle failed to capture the spirit of the original Beetle, as it was a Mark IV Golf with a vaguely Beetle shaped tin can put on top of it. The original Beetle was a rear engined, rear drive, air cooled car that was truly ahead of its time when introduced in 1939.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-27
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: A HUGE AMOUNT OF 2.0L ENGINES (1998-2006) SEEM TO STALL WHEN DRIVING OR STATIONARY AFTER 20 MIN FROM COLD START IN HIGH TEMPS (+75F) . LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND POWER ASSIST BRAKES. IT HAPPENED TO ME 2X WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH. SCARY. DEALERS AND MECHANICS CAN'T LOCATE ISSUES BECAUSE ITS INTERMITTENT. CARS OPERATE NORMAL AGAIN AFTER 10-20 MINS. SEE HTTP://NEWBEETLE.ORG/FORUMS/2-0-LITER-GAS/139065-HOT-WEATHER-STOP-GO-CAR-STALLS-DANGEROUS-2.HTML#POST1508562 FOR A LIST OF DIFFERENT SITES ALL LISTING SIMILAR ISSUES. ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-01-01
- VIN: 3VWDD21C61M
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I READ THE RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE PAPER (NHTSA 17V-509, VW 20AE) REGARDING THE FUEL PUMP CUT OUT. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO VW A NUMBER OF TIMES OVER THE YEARS THAT MY VW ENGINE STOPS WHEN DRIVING BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MPH. THE SERVICE WRITERS RESPONSE WAS THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED - A $1000 ITEM. OTHER MECHANICS THAT I'VE ASKED HAVE SAID THAT IF THAT WAS THE CASE THE ENGINE WOULD NOT GET FUEL AND NOT WORK AND THAT IT WAS PROBABLY SOMETHING ELSE. WHEN I READ THE SYMPTOMS REPORTED IN 20AE, THEY WERE EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY TIMES, BUT NOT CONSISTENTLY. AT 65 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE CUTS OUT, THE DECELERATION IS ALMOST IMMEDIATE TO 50 MPH. THE SYMPTOMS STARTED ABOUT 8-10 YEARS AGO. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY SINCE BECAUSE I WAS NEARLY RUN OVER BY A CEMENT TRUCK. THE ARTICLE I READ SAID THAT NO KNOWN CRASHES OR INJURIES WERE CAUSED BY THE PROBLEM. PLEASE CONSIDER EXPANDING THE INVESTIGATION TO INCLUDE THE 2001 NEW BEETLE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY SERIOUS INJURIES DUE TO THIS ISSUE. I BELIEVE MY ISSUE IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ISSUE REPORTED IN THE PRESS.

- Summary: CAR WAS ILLEGALLY REPOSSESSED (I OWN THE VEHICLE BUT USED IT AS COLLATERAL IN A SMALL LOAN) NOVEMBER 29, 2016 WHILE I WAS IN ANOTHER STATE. I THEN RECEIVED A EMAIL FROM CARFAX THAT THE ODOMETER WAS CHANGED AND GAVE ME THE NEW MILEAGE. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN MARCH OF 2015 AND THE MILEAGE WAS OVER 155,000 MILES BUT NOW IT REPORTS 124, 685 MILES WHICH IS NOT AN ERROR BUT INTENTIONAL AND OBVIOUS ODOMETER FRAUD! I HAVE ATTACHED SEVERAL PHOTOS SHOWING THE DEALERSHIP WEBSITE'S LOG OF MILEAGE WHEN I BOUGHT IT, THE PICTURE OF MY ODOMETER AS OF OCTOBER 2015 (WHEN IT WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO DRIVE DUE TO OIL LEAK FROM VALVE COVER), AND THE EMAIL SCREENSHOT FROM CARFAX SHOWING THE ODOMETER FRAUD. THE NEW OWNERS OF THE VEHICLE ARE PETER LANDRY OF FOR FINANCIAL IN DONALDSONVILLE, LOUISIANA 225 473 7652

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: COOLANT SYSTEM CAN NOT BE FIXED. WHEN DRIVING, SOMETIMES THE COOLANT WILL BE BOILING. SOMETIMES THE COOLANT LEVEL IS LOW LEAD THE COOLANT SYSTEM LIGHT ON. WHEN ADD MORE COOLANT TO THE WATER TANK, AFTER SEVERAL MILES DRIVING, THE COOLANT LEVEL WILL BE HIGHER THAN NORMAL. IT RUNS WELL THEN THE COOLANT SYSTEM/OVERHEATING LIGHT WILL BE ON. KEEP DRIVING THEN THE LIGHT WILL BE OFF. THEN IT WILL BE OFF. MECHANICS TRIED TO CLEAN AND REPLACE THE WHOLE COOLANT SYSTEM. BUT THE OVERHEATING ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN AND AGAIN. THEN AFTER THEY TRIED FOUR TIMES, I WAS TOLD THAT I NEED TO GET RID OF THE CAR CAUSE THEY CANNOT FIX IT. AND THEY KNEW OTHER PEOPLE'S VW NEW BEETLE(2000) HAS THE SAME ISSUE. SEEMS LIKE NOT ONLY MY BEETLE BUG'S PROBLEM.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-31
- VIN: 3VWED21C51M
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: FORUMS CONCERNING THIS VW MODEL, AND OTHER MODELS BOTH OLDER AND NEWER, ARE REPLETE WITH REPORTS OF THE CARS STALLING WITH SYMPTOMS OF STARVED FUEL, USUALLY ARISING WHEN THE TANK IS LESS THAN HALF FULL. SEE, E.G., HTTP://FORUMS.VWVORTEX.COM/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?4971876-CAR-STALLING-WHILE-AT-SPEED-IS-LOW-FUEL-THE-PROBLEM. MY VEHICLE SUFFERS FROM IDENTICAL SYMPTOMS. OTHER OWNERS ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM BY (1) CLEANING THE FUEL TANK; (2) REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP; (3) REPLACING THE SPEED SENSOR; (4) REPLACING THE CRANK SENSOR; (5) REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER; (6) REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP RELAY; AND (7) CLEANING THE FUEL TANK. IN MOST CASES, BASED ON REVIEW FROM THESE FORUMS, THE PROBLEM IS NOT PERMANENTLY SOLVED AND RECURS WHILE DRIVING CAUSING THE CAR TO STALL AND CREATING A THREAT TO LIFE SAFETY. I CANNOT BELIEVE VW IS UNAWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BASED ON THE MULTITUDE OF REPORTS. YET, I HAVE SEEN NOTHING FROM VW THAT ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE. IF NO INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN LAUNCHED ON THIS ISSUE, NHTSA SHOULD LAUNCH ONE.

The GLX has been a reliable companion on our long trips, averaging 2500 miles each year. It cruises effortlessly at highway speeds between 80 and 100 mph, although we always make sure to stay within the legal limit. The steering is quick and responsive, and even after long days of driving, we feel like we've been treated to a comfortable ride. The visibility is excellent from all angles, and the Turbo acceleration is a real safety feature. While we have encountered a few issues, our family mechanic was able to easily fix them. We prefer to avoid dealer maintenance, as they tend to be too expensive and eager to replace entire assemblies instead of just making minor adjustments or replacing parts as needed.

I can see that you have had your bug for over a year and you still love it! It sounds like it's a lot of fun to drive with all the features you mentioned such as power steering, power brakes, cruise control, fully adjustable seats, and drive by wire accelerator. The TDI engine seems to be a great choice as it turns heads at stop lights and is quieter than a gas engine while cruising at highway speeds. Additionally, the TDI engine has incredible torque for quickly accelerating from a stop or going up hills. It sounds like you are having a lot of fun driving it!

Great vehicle! After my recent accident, I will buy nothing but VW automobiles. The safety features are beyond awesome - my new Beetle saved my life!

My husband and I bought this amazing diesel car on a whim. We traded in our 4 Runner for it and I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. We get an impressive 50 MPG and can pass anything on the road. The manual transmission makes it even more fun! Plus, even with the A/C running, we still get 50 MPG! I can't understand why they stopped making them. I absolutely adore this car and it still has the original battery, which is going strong.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with cars, specifically with the Beetle Sport 5 spd. I got one for my daughter and it's been great! We haven't had any issues apart from the door handles chipping, but that's a minor thing. The car is perfect for a new driver in high school - it's relatively cheap to insure and the wheel panels are plastic and cheap to replace (although we haven't had to yet). Plus, it's a total chick car! The Sport's lo-pro wheels give it a nice handling sensation and the brakes are much more manageable than in other cars we've had. Overall, I feel it's a safe car to be in. Thanks for listening!

I purchased a 1.8 GLS turbo with 21,500 miles, attracted by its appearance and driving experience. However, I have encountered several issues with the car, including problems with the gas door, trunk, window levers, and door locks. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address them and ensure the car's reliability. I am disappointed with the service provided by the dealer, but I am determined to find a solution to these issues.

This cute car has been a bit of a challenge when it comes to repairs. Unfortunately, we've had to replace the catalytic converter, alternator, intake valve, and deal with check engine lights, oil pan issues, rear brake problems, and taillight and headlamp replacements. We've also had to replace the front spoiler, trunk latch, and key, and deal with cup holder issues, a peeling door, stained seats, interior panel light problems, and airbag light issues. Additionally, the small sun visor and loud engine on the highway have been a bit of a nuisance, and it hasn't been as fuel-efficient as we expected. We had a 1995 Jetta that we loved, but unfortunately, this Beetle has been a bit of a challenge. We're considering selling it, but we don't want to pass on any issues to someone else. Maybe VW will buy it back, haha!

This was the first car I ever bought and although I've had some issues with it, I've learned a lot from the experience. It may not have as much room as I would like, and I've had some mechanical problems with the moon roof, locks, and trunk latch, but I'm grateful for the lessons learned. While it may be a bit pricey, I believe VW offers quality cars that are worth the investment.

The Beetle is a blast to drive and offers enjoyable performance for its price. While I've had some maintenance issues with the car, such as having to replace a headlight, the emergency brake lever, and the center console dash light under warranty, as well as having to replace the cables that pop open the gas cover, the emergency brake cables, and one tire after 30000 miles, in addition to routine maintenance, I still find it to be a great car. The aluminum spokes of the steering wheel show some wear, and some of the rubberized plastic is peeling, but overall it's still a fun ride. Unfortunately, the exterior paint has started to chip and spider around the door pulls.

If you were a fan of the old beetle, you might not be too fond of the 'New' beetle. Unfortunately, this car has been a bit of a nightmare. The gas door cable and power windows have been problematic, and the overall quality of the build is quite poor. Most of the issues seem to be electrical in nature. Even the heated seats seem to change their control switches at will! The throttle can be dangerous as it sometimes ignores your foot and does what it wants, which is another example of computer marvels gone wrong. According to the service people, the transmission needs to be reset frequently as it learns driving habits. My wife and I are still trying to figure out who it is learning from.
