Mazda Mazda3 2005 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.

The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.

The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.

The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.

A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.

The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

Common Mazda Mazda3 2005 problems

The Mazda3, a compact car produced by Mazda, has been known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2005 model year. One of the most frequently reported issues is with the heating and cooling system, which can take a long time to come on under any condition. This can be inconvenient and uncomfortable for drivers, especially in extreme temperatures.

Another issue that has been reported by owners of the 2005 Mazda3 is difficulty starting the car when it is in Park. This problem occurs approximately once every twenty attempts and requires the driver to put the car in Neutral before turning the ignition to start it. This can be a significant inconvenience, particularly in situations where the driver needs to start the car quickly or in tight spaces.

In addition to these issues, some owners of the 2005 Mazda3 have reported blown engines, although this appears to be less common than the other problems mentioned. This issue may be more prevalent in high-mileage cars or those that have not been maintained properly, but it is still a concern for potential buyers.

Another problem that has been reported in the 2005 Mazda3 is steering failure. This issue can cause the steering wheel to become suddenly hard to steer, almost as if it were locked, particularly during close turns and maneuvers. This can be a serious safety concern and requires immediate attention from a dealer or mechanic.

Finally, some owners of the 2005 Mazda3 have reported issues with the front end and suspension, including leaking rear shock absorbers. This can cause the rear end of the car to feel loose and bouncy on bumps, which can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.

In summary, the 2005 Mazda3 has several common problems, including issues with the heating and cooling system, difficulty starting the car in Park, potential engine failure, steering failure, and issues with the front end and suspension. While these issues may not affect all 2005 Mazda3s, potential buyers should be aware of them and consider having the car inspected by a mechanic before purchasing.

Is Mazda 3 2005 reliable?

Super Reliable. The Mazda 3 SP23 is a car I would highly recommend. Great value, great performance, good looks, practicality, fun, and ease of driving.

What is the most common problem with Mazda 3?

Mazda 3 Reliability and Common Problems

  • The Mazda 3 is one of the most reliable compact sedans, with a high reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 from RepairPal.
  • Common problems with the Mazda 3 include lightning issues, infotainment problems, faulty brakes, and sway bar links that need to be replaced.

How many miles can a 2005 Mazda 3 last?

Mazda 3s are known for their reliability and longevity. With proper maintenance, a Mazda 3 can easily last over 200,000 miles. In fact, some Mazda 3s have been known to reach over 300,000 miles without any major repairs.

Does a 2005 Mazda 3 have a timing belt?

Unless the Mazda 3 in question is the very first turbo-diesel model (sold in Australia between 2007 and 2009) then the engine powering it uses a timing chain rather than a rubber belt. The exception was the 2.0-lire turbo-diesel which used a rubber, toothed timing belt.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-17
  • VIN: jm1bk343751
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Randomly, the parking lights, tail lights, and climate control lighting will fail. This has happened to me multiple times over a number of years. Striking the right side of the center console will generally result in functionality being restored. Sometimes, simply turning the lights off and then on again results in the failure as well. My assumption, based on online forums where others have had the same issues, is that the Passenger Junction Box (PJB) is faulty. Striking the center console send vibrations to the PJB, resulting in it (usually) to start working again. While I do not regularly drive the vehicle at night, my concern is that without working tail lights, I could be involved in an accident OR be ticketed for my lights not working. Others online have had the same issues, and I believe it may be an issue in multiple vehicle models and model years.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-07-27
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: TIRES FEATHER OR CUP IN LESS THAN 25000 MILES DUE TO THE REAR WHEEL FACTORY CAMBER TIRE MANUFACTURERS DO NOT RECOMMEND AGGRESSIVE CAMBER AND WILL NOT WARRANTY THE TIRES FOR PREMATURE FAILURE. MAZDA AND OTHER MANUFACTURERS KNOW THAT THE AGGRESSIVE CAMBER CAUSES TIRES TO WEAR FASTER SINCE THEY ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR THIS. THE FEATHERING DRASTICALLY AFFECT HANDLING ESPECIALLY IN WET WEATHER. TIRE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD STATE THE MAXIMUM ACCEPTABLE CAMBER FOR THEIR TIRES AND MANUFACTURERS SHOULD CHOOSE APPROPRIATELY DESIGN TIRES FOR THIS APPLICATION. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IT HAPPENS WITH FACTORY RECOMMENDED ALIGNMENT SPECS. THE AGGRESSIVE CAMBER IMPROVES HANDLING BUT TIRES ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR THIS. IF THE TIRE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT BACK THE TIRE FOR THIS APPLICATION THEN THE CAR MANUFACTURER HAS IMPROPERLY DESIGNED THE SUSPENSION FOR PASSENGER CARS. THIS IS THE 3S MODEL WITH ONLY 135000 MILES AND 5TH SET OF TIRES AND ALIGNMENT CHECKED EACH TIME.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEAT BELTS,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-02-19
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEAT BELTS,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: (VISIBILITY)THE HEADLIGHTS BOTH BLEW AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK IN THE EARLY MORNING THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED SO I HAD TO DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 8 MILES THE REST OF THE WAY TO WORK IN THE DARK, RUNNING LIGHTS ONLY. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THEY SAID THEY REPLACED THE HEADLIGHTS WAS APPROX. 35.00. I GUESSED A FUSE SINCE BOTH BLEW AT THE SAME TIME?? THEN THE FOLLOWING YEAR THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON MY WAY HOME. IT WAS DARK AND AGAIN I DROVE HOME WITH RUNNING LIGHTS. I THINK IT'S ODD THAT BOTH HEADLIGHTS GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME EVERY TIME. THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT DOESN'T WORK RIGHT. IT LOCKS UP, UNABLE TO PULL STRAP OUT TO BUCKLE UP. TOOK IT IN AND CALLED MAZDA. THEY PAID FOR REPAIR WHICH WAS QUOTED AT APPROX 89.00. ALL WAS GOOD FOR ABOUT A WEEK. I PICKED MY STEP MOM UP AND SHE WENT TO PUT HER SEATBELT ON AND IT WOULDN'T EXTEND. I HAVE FOUND THAT IF YOU WAIT A FEW MINUTES AND BEGIN DRIVING THE PASSENGER CAN USE THE BELT. IF WE DRIVE AND THE BRAKES ARE BEING APPLIED THE SEAT BELT DOESN'T COME OUT. NOT SURE IF THAT'S A COINCIDENCE OR NOT. DIDN'T HAVE IT FIXED AGAIN, WE DEAL WITH IT. *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-12-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JM1BK32F951
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHILE TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 35MPH AN ONCOMING VEHICLE (FORD EXPLORER) TRIED TO MAKE A LEFT TURN ACROSS MY LANE OF TRAVEL. WHILE BRAKING, MY 2005 MAZDA 3 WAS HIT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DIRECTLY BETWEEN THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT DOOR AND DRIVERS SIDE REAR DOOR DAMAGING BOTH IN THE PROCESS. MY VEHICLE WAS THEN PUSHED INTO A VEHICLE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION CROSS STREET. THIS COLLISION DAMAGED THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR AND REAR QUARTER PANEL. AS A RESULT, 5 AIRBAGS DEPLOYED; THE FOUR DOOR CURTAIN AIRBAGS AND THE DRIVERS SIDE TORSO AIRBAG. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE DRIVER SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG DEPLOYED AFTER MY HEAD HIT THE DRIVERS DOOR WINDOW GLASS. BECAUSE MY HEAD HIT THE GLASS HARD AND BOUNCED BACK I RECEIVED A CONCUSSION AS WELL AS WHIPLASH ON MY NECK. IF THE AIRBAG WOULD HAVE DEPLOYED IN TIME, THE RESULT WOULD MOST LIKELY HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER FOR ME. *TR

Negative Mazda Mazda3 2005 car reviews

  1. Tyler Lang 2024-06-15

I recently purchased the 2005 Special Edition Mazda3, equipped with the SP2 Security Package, Moonroof, and Navigation. While I understand that some may have concerns, I am confident in my decision to keep the car. While there have been some negative reviews regarding the car's performance in snowy conditions and fuel economy, I have found that with proper maintenance and driving techniques, these issues can be mitigated. Additionally, the car's navigation system, while not the most advanced, still provides useful features. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase and look forward to enjoying it for years to come.

  2. Brennan Kulas 2024-05-15

As a commuter and a father with two young children and a wife, I needed a reliable car that could handle the challenges of our busy lives. I purchased a used car with 30,000 miles for $12,000 almost 7 years ago (in 2008) and expected it to last for almost 200,000 miles or 12 years. While the first four years were uneventful, the following three were quite painful. The car would often turn off inexplicably or simply not start. I tried changing the battery and even brought it to my mechanic, but nothing seemed to work. Unfortunately, the car was not reliable enough for my needs. Although I initially thought this was a one-time experience, I found similar stories online about Mazda 3s from 2005 that suddenly stopped working. This made me wonder. Eventually, at 143,000 miles, I decided to trade in the car to a dealer and purchase a 2005 Prius with 112,000 miles.

  3. Loyal Balistreri 2024-04-23

Hi there! I noticed that you recently purchased a 1 year old hatch with 24,000 miles and have had to replace the engine and transmission linkage since then. That's definitely frustrating! It sounds like you've had a bit of bad luck with this car. I hope things start looking up for you soon. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Guy Hickle 2024-02-26

Although the car looked great and was fun to drive, unfortunately, I experienced several issues with it during the year and a half that I owned it. Despite this, I was fortunate to have access to Mazda's loaner car program, which helped alleviate some of the expenses. However, the frequent trips to the dealership for various sensor and trim issues were quite inconvenient. Overall, I believe that my experience with this particular car was an anomaly and does not reflect the quality of Mazda's vehicles.

  5. Jabari Schinner 2024-02-04

The 3 is a fantastic car, with a cute and sporty design. However, at 3559 miles, it required a new engine due to a bearing issue. Despite the disappointment, I am taking proactive steps to sell it as I prioritize reliability in my vehicles. The dealership's assistance during this situation was not up to my expectations.

Positive Mazda Mazda3 2005 car reviews

  1. Jordy Gleason 2024-11-29

Dropped $21,000 cash and have absolutely no regrets. The car is surprisingly peppy and the suspension is like a racecar. When you press the right pedal, it snaps to attention. I was expecting something laggy and plastic, but instead, I got a car out of a videogame. It has no bad habits on the road and does what it's told without complaint. The visibility is like a F-16's cockpit and the interior is roomy like a luxury car. The cargo space is so large that it would make some SUV's blush. I piled on leather, airbag package, and ABS, and still only came to $21,000 out the door. I was never going to buy an import, but the Mazda 3 totally changed my mind. Detroit, wake up: Japan is about to eat your lunch again!

A totally great little car. Mine is a stick shift and it's my first car. It's easy and fun to drive. The only thing that was a little weak was the horn, but my Dad changed it for an Air Horn like a Ferrari!

Hey there! Looking for the very best compact car?

I really enjoyed driving this car during the summer and fall months. The gas mileage is great, the fit and finish are of good quality, and it looks fantastic. However, I did encounter a problem with it. Unfortunately, this car does not perform well on ice or snow. If you come across a hill, you better have some momentum going because otherwise, you might start sliding backwards. Perhaps investing in a set of snow tires could help, but without them, it's best to keep this car in the garage until the weather improves.

I've been driving this car for 3 years now and I still think it's the best car under $25,000. I haven't had any mechanical problems, just a brake job at 50,000 miles and new tires. Living in the city, I get a combined 27 mpg, but on the highway, my gas gauge commonly reports mpg in the middle to upper 30s. After 60k miles, there is minimal wear on the car, such as a small area of stitching on the leather seat that has come out and a few exterior issues due to things happening to it.
