1991 Buick Roadmaster problems

buick logo

The Buick Roadmaster is an automobile built by Buick from 1936 until 1942, from 1946 until 1958, and then again from 1991 until 1996. Roadmasters produced between 1936 and 1958 were built on Buick's longest non-limousine wheelbase and shared their basic structure with the entry-level Cadillac Series 65, the Buick Limited, and after 1940, the Oldsmobile 98. Between 1946 and 1957, the Roadmaster served as Buick's flagship.

It became the marque's largest vehicle when it was resurrected for the 1991 through 1996 model years. The Roadmaster sedan, a C-body vehicle over its eight previous generations, shared the B-body for the first time in its history. It was 10 in (254 mm) longer with a 5 in (127 mm) greater wheelbase than the C-body Buick Park Avenue. It was also larger both in wheelbase (2 in (51 mm)) and overall length (6 in (152 mm)) than the K-body Cadillac DeVille.

A Buick Roadmaster Estate station wagon was introduced in 1947 and was manufactured in several generations through 1996.

Common 1991 Buick Roadmaster problems

The Buick Roadmaster, produced in the 1991-1996 model years, is known for its reliability and dependability. However, there are some common issues reported by owners that may affect the vehicle's performance.

  • Auto Level Ride Compressor Failure: The Auto Level Ride (ALR) system, which adjusts the suspension to maintain a constant ride height, is prone to compressor failure. This issue affects 16 Roadmaster owners, according to RepairPal. The compressor may fail due to wear and tear, resulting in a rough ride and reduced handling performance.
  • Hardware Loosening: Some owners have reported that the car's hardware, such as trim panels and cosmetic items, may work loose and vibrate over time. This issue is not mechanical in nature and does not affect the vehicle's performance or safety, but it can be a source of annoyance for owners.
  • Faulty Brake System Component: In the 1992 Roadmaster, there was a recall due to a faulty component in the brake system that could corrode and cause fluid to leak. This issue could potentially affect the vehicle's braking performance and safety.
  • Engine Misfiring: Some Roadmaster owners have reported issues with engine misfiring, particularly at light loads. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors.
  • Transmission Slipping: Transmission slipping is another common issue reported by Roadmaster owners. This issue can be caused by low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch packs, or a faulty torque converter.
  • Air Shocks: Finding replacement air shocks for the Roadmaster can be challenging, as they are not commonly available at auto parts stores. Owners may need to order them directly from Buick dealers or search online for aftermarket options.
  • Fuel Pump or Pressure Regulator Issues: Some Roadmaster owners have reported issues with the fuel pump or pressure regulator, particularly in the 5.7-liter TBI engine models. These issues can cause the engine to run poorly, stall, or have difficulty starting.
  • Oil Pressure Sending Unit: The oil pressure sending unit can also be a source of issues in the Roadmaster, particularly in the 1992 model year. A faulty sending unit can cause the engine to display incorrect oil pressure readings, which can be misleading for owners.
  • Brake System Problems: Some Roadmaster owners have reported issues with the brake system, including leaks, worn-out brake pads, and faulty brake lines. These issues can affect the vehicle's braking performance and safety.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues, such as faulty relays, oxidized connections, and malfunctioning sensors, can also affect the Roadmaster's performance. These issues can cause various symptoms, including stalling, difficulty starting, and poor fuel efficiency.

In summary, the Buick Roadmaster is known for its reliability and dependability, but like any vehicle, it can experience common issues that may affect its performance. These issues include Auto Level Ride compressor failure, hardware loosening, faulty brake system components, engine misfiring, transmission slipping, air shock availability, fuel pump or pressure regulator problems, oil pressure sending unit issues, brake system problems, and electrical issues.

Positive 1991 Buick Roadmaster car reviews

  1. Fredy Robel 2024-10-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this amazing car. It has a special place in my heart as it was originally purchased by my grandfather. The car is an absolute dream to drive, you'll feel like you're gliding on the road. The acceleration is unbelievable thanks to the LT1 derivative V8. The steering is soft, which is to be expected from such a large car, but it still handles beautifully. Plus, if you need trunk space, there's plenty of room! In terms of reliability, I've had no issues with the drivetrain even after 130,000 miles. This is the last large Buick ever made, and it definitely lives up to the brand's reputation. If you're a fan of large cars, I highly recommend this 4dr Sedan. Just make sure to give it some TLC and people will definitely notice you on the road!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've had this car for 5 years and I've really enjoyed driving it. It has plenty of room for kids and vacation luggage. I'm happy to report that it's on its second engine with 200,000 miles on it and it's still running great!
