The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.
Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

- Summary: This vehicle should be considered as a "drive at your own risk" vehicle. Engine randomly fails to start using push button start in coordination with pressing on the brake pedal. Dash and gages indicated all electrical systems were on and no warning symbols were displayed. Repeated attempts by owner to start vehicle failed. Attempts using remote start app erroneously indicated that the vehicle was already in operation. Fail-to-start generally existed for 2-4 hours before the vehicle would randomly start. Failure to start and stranding owner repeated 4 times over the next 8 days, including while the vehicle was in service shop of Dealer. Dealer service could not identify source of the problem and produced records that the safety recall for the battery ground stud issue had already been performed. Dealer service records (attached) recommended against driving vehicle due to "what seems to be intermittent high speed power train communications fault". Owner has requested Dealer By Back due to this repetitive and unresolved safety problem. Refusal from Land Rover to buy the vehicle back places this consumer safety issue back into owners hands which triggered the moral obligation to submit this information to the NHTSA as a safety problem.

The seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly.
- Consequence: An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash.

A loose contact between the battery ground stud and the chassis may result in various electrical faults, possibly causing a loss of electrical power or the vehicle to shut down while driving.
- Consequence: A vehicle that shuts down or loses exterior lighting while driving increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the ground stud, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 10, 2021. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N607.

Great all around SUV! It's only downfall is that it has some squeaks.

We bought a 2019 new & absolutely love it! Although the Bluetooth can be temperamental at times, which can be a bit of a pain, and there was a recall on the leaking windshield, it's still a steady, heavy, and capable hauler. We've driven 63K kms and now it's time for its first big service, including a new set of brakes.

I leased the Discovery when it first came out in 2017. The SE model had a 6-cylinder engine that I absolutely loved. It had great acceleration and power, and the ride was both soft and sturdy. What I appreciated most about the ride was that it wasn't too springy like a Buick or Tahoe. The chassis absorbed a ton of road vibration and bumps, yet maintained a rigidity that made it feel controlled. Although I almost bought the car at the end of the lease, I ended up purchasing a new Defender instead. Throughout my time with the Discovery, I had zero issues with the car, except for the infotainment unit that would turn off every now and then (once a month). The blip would last maybe a few seconds, and then it would just reboot itself. Not a game changer. I drove the car hard and often and had zero complaints or mechanical issues. The engine was very reliable and efficient for a car of this size. I would definitely recommend it. I love the Discovery, but now I am a proud Defender owner!!!

How has it been treating you? It's been about four months since you purchased it, so I hope everything is going smoothly.

The infotainment system in this car is a huge leap forward and on par with the best. The space in the vehicle is incredible and combined with the strong engine, it feels very capable. The ride is good and fuel economy is impressive, with an excellent cruising range. I have about 7000 miles under my belt and the visibility is outstanding. Although the start/stop feature requires a two-step menu-driven action to turn off, which is a slight annoyance, it is still a great car. Please note that this is the top of the line trim with the V6, not the four-cylinder. I had a very good dealership sales experience, but the service experience was not as good. I am used to next-day service with Lexus, but with Land Rover, it is more like three-week appointments. Despite this, the car is so much more enjoyable than the Lexus GX we had, with much better MPG and a hugely bigger gas tank. However, I have experienced some electrical issues and have 3 outstanding recalls that need to be resolved. I am not sure why, but the rear tailgate opens and closes on its own, not while driving though. I had an ongoing issue with the CEL going on after a few weeks, but they looked at it and said it was fixed by replacing an O2 sensor. The light came back on two weeks later, then on and off every once in a while. Now, it is magically staying off. The build quality is below average to only fair, but the car is still a great choice.

In 2007, I purchased my first Land Rover, an 04 Disco with 30xxx miles. I was really impressed with the ruggedness and overall coolness of the vehicle. However, after a year and a half, it turned into a nightmare. The oil pump blew on the freeway and totally destroyed the engine, which was the first engine failure of any vehicle I had previously owned. It shook me pretty bad and I stayed away from Land Rovers for 18 years. Recently, the new Discovery caught my eye and I thought for sure Land Rover had changed as far as reliability goes. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. I purchased my 2019 Discovery SE with 26000 miles on it and the first thing to happen was tires wearing quicker than normal and alignment issues. The car also went into limp mode at low RPMs. I took it to Land Rover and they said it was the catalytic Converter. They had the car for 4 weeks due to the part being on backorder. This was done at 37k miles. At 43k, while driving at low RPMs through a subdivision, the engine started hesitating and I had to pull over. I got it towed and sure enough, it needs a new engine. Unfortunately, the car is out of warranty now and the price I was given was $22,000. I have decided that I will not be buying a Land Rover again.

This car has unfortunately been a very disappointing purchase. However, it is important to note that many of the issues I experienced occurred after the warranty had expired. Despite this, I have had to replace the windshield twice due to water leaks, and the console cooler stopped working at only 50k miles despite minimal use. Additionally, there have been issues with oil leaks, the hood cable has had to be replaced twice before 60k miles, and there have been numerous software updates required to fix glitches such as screens randomly going black, slow touchscreen response, and freezing infotainment. The sunroof motor also had to be replaced before 60k miles, and there have been multiple DEF errors. The car also seems to go through tires quickly, although this may be due to the quality of the Continental tires. There have also been issues with the seat belt assembly and more oil leaks. It is worth noting that LR has installed two protective plates underneath the car to conceal the plastic connected to metal components. Overall, while this has not been a positive experience, it is important to consider the age of the car and the fact that many of these issues occurred after the warranty had expired.
