Common 1986 Peugeot 505 problems

The Peugeot 505, introduced in 1979, was a well-built, reliable car designed to handle all sorts of road conditions, making it popular worldwide.

When considering which Peugeot 505 to buy, it is essential to know that the most common versions in Europe were diesels, but a good number of petrol variants were sold elsewhere. The 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, and 2.2 turbo 4-cylinders were offered, although the turbo variants are very rare, as is the later 2.8-litre V6. Diesels were sold in 2.3 and 2.5-litre capacities, both with and without turbocharging.

One common problem with the Peugeot 505 is related to the fuse boxes in pre-1982 models. The fuse boxes on these models can cause a number of intermittent electrical faults due to oxidation of the connections. Upgrading to the newer fuse boxes can solve this issue.

Another issue is with automatic gearboxes, which benefit from some preventative maintenance. Replacing the oil filter mesh and changing the oil every 25,000kms can greatly improve shift smoothness.

Rust is also a concern, especially in cars from more humid regions such as the UK. When importing a car from such regions, it is crucial to thoroughly inspect all the usual rust-prone areas, such as wheel arches, floorpans, and sunroof surrounds.

The 505's chassis and frame were built to last, and if a car has spent its life in a dry climate, it may still be in good condition. However, cars from more humid regions will require a thorough inspection to ensure they are free from rust and other damage.

In summary, the Peugeot 505 is a rugged all-rounder designed to excel at various tasks. When buying a 505, it is essential to consider the car's history, maintenance records, and potential issues, such as electrical faults and rust. With proper care and maintenance, a Peugeot 505 can provide reliable and comfortable transportation for years to come.
