Common 2002 Saturn Sc problems
The 2002 Saturn SC2 is known for several common problems that car owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Fine Wire Electrode Spark Plugs: The S-Series has a distributorless ignition system that is particular about what spark plugs to use. Fine wire electrodes can cause problems, leading to a P0300 code and running like the car needs new plugs. The easiest solution is to use the OE spark plugs, which are inexpensive and reliable.
- Throttle Position Sensor Failure: These sensors have a higher than normal failure rate. The symptom is high idle, usually 1600+. If shutting off the car and restarting it causes the idle to drop back down, and the engine coolant temperature sensor is good, it's almost definitely the TPS. The aftermarket replacements have a quality problem, so it's best to find a low-mileage junkyard replacement or order the OE part.
- Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure: This is not a common failure, but it still occurs. The sensor usually fails when the engine is hot. The car will suddenly die, and won't restart until it cools down. The aftermarket replacements seem to work fine.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leak: This problem affects the 3rd generation (00-02) SOHC (Sx1) cars. The symptom is sporadic or consistently high idle, P0300, P0301, or P0302. Spraying carb cleaner around the intake, specifically the #1 runner, can verify the problem.
- Coolant Stem Running into the Intake Manifold Leak: This problem affects the 00-02 DOHC cars. There will be a slow but significant leak around where the coolant hose runs into the manifold near cylinder #4. There is a product specifically for fixing this problem.
- Broken Coil Springs: This problem affects the 3rd generation (00-02) cars. If you're doing struts, replace the springs. OE junkyard replacements from a gen-1 or gen-2 car are your best bet.
- F6 (gen 1), F5 (gen 2), F2 (gen 3) IPJB fuse block segment overheating: This problem is caused mainly by overdrawing from the 12v socket or high power aftermarket accessories drawing from the same circuit. There will be melted plastic around the fuse. The radio, chime module, dome light, 12v socket, and fuel pump are on this circuit. You will probably know about it when the fuel pump stops working.
- Broken Shifter Cable Bushing (manual trans): The bushing is made of plastic and eventually breaks. The gear shift will be loose and/or fail to shift completely. There is a stainless steel replacement available.
- Worn Pressure Regulator Valve and Reverse Boost Valve in the Auto Trans Valve Body: Unfortunately, this is a reality of these cars. There are no drain back holes in the pistons, which allows oil in the valve body to become contaminated with transmission fluid. This can lead to worn pressure regulator valves and reverse boost valves in the auto trans valve body.
These are just some of the common problems reported by Saturn SC2 owners. However, with regular maintenance and care, these issues can be minimized, and the car can last for a long time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-11-11
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1G8ZY12732Z
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: CAR HAS HAD ISSUES WITH THE STARTER OVER THE YEARS, REQUIRING COUNTLESS REPLACEMENTS BEFORE THE RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT DATES. RECENTLY, A STARTER LASTED ONLY 6 MONTHS BEFORE FAILING. WHEN A MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE STARTER, HE SAID THAT THERE IS PROBABLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE IGNITION CAUSING THE STARTER TO CONTINUOUSLY RUN WHILE THE ENGINE IS ON. THIS RESULTED IN THE STARTER COMPLETELY BURNING UP ON THE INSIDE. SMOKE WAS VISIBLE FROM THIS STARTER. THE KEY ALSO SLIPS OUT OF THE IGNITION IN ANY POSITION, INCLUDING WHEN THE ENGINE IS ON AND CAR IS MOVING. THERE IS A RECALL FROM GM AFFECTING SATURN IGNITION SWITCHES AND IGNITION CYLINDERS, BUT IT DOES NOT INCLUDE 2002 SATURNS EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS THE SAME.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: I CONTACTED GM'S CUSTOMER SERVICE REGARDING MY IGNITION SWITCH WHICH IS STUCK ON ACCESSORY AND HAS BEEN DRAINING MY BATTERY. MY CAR WAS A YEAR BEFORE THE RECALLED IGNITION SWITCHES IN OTHER SATURN BUT AFTER SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH IT APPEARED TO BE SIMILAR ISSUES THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE RECALLS HAD. THEY REFERRED ME TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP FOR A QUOTE AND SAID THAT THEY WOULD DETERMINE IF IT WOULD BE COVERED. WHEN I ARRIVED THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY HAD SEEN MANY OF THESE ISSUES BUT GM ALWAYS REFUSED TO COVER AND THAT I SHOULD CALL THEM TO GET A CASE NUMBER. AFTER SPENDING 45 MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH A REPRESENTATIVE TO DETERMINE IF I WAS ELIGIBLE I WAS THEN PASSED TO ANOTHER REPRESENTATIVE WHO TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THE IGNITION SWITCH DID NOT TURN WHILE DRIVING, IT WAS MY PROBLEM BECAUSE MY CAR IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD AND PARASITIC DRAINS WERE NOT THEIR REMIT. I ASKED IF THESE WERE IN THE SAME BATCH AS THE RECALLED SWITCHES BECAUSE THEY SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL FAULTY SWITCHES WITHIN THAT TIME FRAME AND THEY TOLD ME TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA. I REACHED OUT TO THEIR DIGITAL CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS WHO WERE ABLE TO ISSUE ME A CASE NUMBER AND SAID THAT SOMEONE WOULD CALL ME WITHIN 24 HOURS AND NO ONE CALLED. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT 2002 SWITCHES ARE INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE RECALL ISSUES AND I HAVE MY CASE NUMBER ON FILE IN CASE ANYONE ACTUALLY HELPS ME THERE. *TR

MY CAR--2002 SATURN SC2 HAD TO HAVE AN ENGINE OVERHAUL AT 46,000 MILES DUE TO BURNED VALVES IN #2 CYLINDER. EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERED REPAIRS. OIL CONSUMPTION PRIOR TO OVERHAUL WAS EXCESSIVE (QT EVERY 1000 MILES--DEALER SAID NORMAL) MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS AN INTERMITTENT EXTREMELY ROUGH DOWNSHIFT, WHICH WAS REPORTED TO SATURN DEALERS 4 TIMES WHILE IN WARRANTY. EACH TIME, THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. OUR FAMILY BOUGHT THE CAR NEW, AND RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED.
