The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.
Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.
Background
General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.
First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.
The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

My experience has been excellent! Although I have spent around $2000 on repairs since I got this car, it has been serviced every 3000 miles. People are always complimenting how great it looks both inside and out. We absolutely love the way it rides!

It's been a pleasure using the van for both cross country trips and local jaunts, whether it's been for playing golf or hauling plants. We're now on the lookout for our next car/van, which must have the adjustable driver's seat, power sliding door, and outside temperature gauge, among other features. We've had a few repair costs at 80,000 miles and about 95,000, but we plan to keep it for a while longer.

In late 1993, we bought a fully loaded Lumina van, which was the new 1994 style just hitting the market. However, during our family vacation in the summer of 1996, we were involved in a bad head-on collision. Thankfully, everyone walked away with only minor injuries. The police credited the van's design for saving our lives. This experience led us to upgrade to the upper-level Olds Silhouette, which we couldn't afford back in 1993. We opted for the leather and the whole works. 14 years and 110,000 miles later, we have only needed a wheel bearing. The fiberglass body still looks new. It's truly been an amazing quality van. We highly recommend this van to any family because of its reliability, especially the plastic sides, which are great with kids around! You should definitely consider buying one!

Not the best in mpg but at 30 years old and 437k miles with no major problems. It's the most reliable car I've owned in 45 years and with winter tires, it handles 8 inches of snow with ease.

The drive was excellent! I'm so glad my children weren't frustrated, even without air conditioning. Tomorrow, with air, they'll probably want to ride all day! I'm happy that they're happy, and now we can enjoy life in our new, nice vehicle. Thank you, Oldsmobile, for providing enough seats for all five of my children!

Our 1995 Silhouette has been an absolute champ since we bought it brand new 9 years ago! The 3.8 V-6 and transmission have been nothing short of fantastic! We have towed boats and trailers with ease for years without any incidents. Although I personally found the seats to be lacking in support for long trips, the van itself is an excellent hauler. Unfortunately, it was hit hard by a teenager and is most likely totaled. It's a sad day for us as we begin our search for another van that can match the longevity of our beloved Silhouette.

I've owned quite a few minivans, and while this one isn't at the top of my list, it's definitely not as bad as Chrysler and its transmission issues. Let's take a look at some of my favorites and areas for improvement.
