1997 Subaru Svx problems

The Subaru Alcyone SVX, marketed outside Japan as the Subaru SVX, is a two-door, front-engine, all- or front-wheel drive coupé manufactured and marketed by Subaru from 1991 to 1996 over a single generation.
Superseding the company's aviation-influenced XT range, the Alcyone SVX was Subaru's first entry into the luxury/performance market, and was noted for its aircraft-inspired 'window-within-a-window' side-glass configuration.
The nameplate "Alcyone" (pronounced "al-SIGH-uh-nee") refers to the brightest star in the Pleiades constellation, stylized in the Subaru company logo. The suffix "SVX" is an acronym for "Subaru Vehicle X".

Common 1997 Subaru Svx problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Subaru SVX 1997, the common problems reported are:
- Transmission Failure: Owners have experienced issues with the transmission in the Subaru SVX 1997. This problem can lead to significant driving issues and may require costly repairs or replacements. Transmission problems can manifest in various ways, such as difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, or complete transmission failure. Addressing transmission issues promptly is crucial to prevent further damage to the vehicle and ensure safe driving conditions.
- Wheel Bearing Failure: Another common problem reported by owners of the Subaru SVX 1997 is wheel bearing failure. Faulty wheel bearings can cause noise, vibration, and compromised handling of the vehicle. If left unattended, wheel bearing issues can lead to more severe problems, affecting the overall performance and safety of the car. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of worn-out wheel bearings are essential to prevent further damage and ensure a smooth driving experience.
- Warped Rotors: Owners have also highlighted the issue of warped rotors in the Subaru SVX 1997. Warped rotors can result in pulsating brakes, vibrations while braking, and reduced braking efficiency. This problem can compromise the vehicle's stopping power and pose a safety risk. Proper maintenance, including regular inspection of the braking system and timely replacement of warped rotors, is crucial to ensure optimal brake performance and driving safety.
Addressing these common problems in the Subaru SVX 1997 requires proactive maintenance, timely repairs, and, in some cases, part replacements. Owners should stay vigilant for any signs of transmission issues, wheel bearing failure, or warped rotors to address these problems promptly and maintain the vehicle's performance and safety standards. Regular servicing and adherence to recommended maintenance schedules can help mitigate these common issues and prolong the lifespan of the Subaru SVX 1997.
Why did the Subaru SVX fail?
It was the only available gearbox because Subaru didn't have a manual transmission that could effectively put up with the SVX without liquifying itself (via MotorTrend). A hefty price tag and somewhat weak transmission spelled sales disaster for Subaru. All told, the brand sold around 14,000 SVXs during its short life.
Is Subaru SVX a rare car?
In its production lifetime between 1991 and 1996, the Subaru SVX is reckoned to have sold 24,379 units — that's slightly more than the 23,400 examples of Citroën C6, with which I am very familiar.
What is the top speed of the 1997 Subaru SVX?
With a four-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels, the SVX had a respectable 0-60 in just over seven seconds with a top speed of 143mph. The SVX had a recommended service interval of 7500 miles, which is right on par with today's discerning standards.
Why did Subaru stop making the SVX?
They simply weren't selling, so Subaru decided to scrap the name and car in favour of a better vehicle, the Subaru Ascent. In 2014, the last year the Tribeca was sold, only 732 models were sold. A lot lower of a number compared to the 18,614 sold in 2007.

This is the best car I have ever purchased, period. The Subaru sports car is an unbelievably well-kept secret. Even though it is 10 years old, it runs like new. The style was way ahead of its time and still turns heads. It is a terrific sports car in the summer and turns into a virtual snowplow in the winter with its full-time AWD. It is also extremely safe, with a heavy chassis, wide tires that grip all road surfaces, 4-channel antilock brakes, and more. I will be sad to part with it because there is nothing on the market like it today.

This car is amazing! I live in a fairly populated area, but I have never seen another one like it. People always stare and ask me what it is, which is pretty funny. I absolutely adore this car; it's incredibly fast, but unfortunately, the automatic transmission is not great and can be expensive to fix. It's a shame they didn't make it a 5-speed. However, the engine is very quiet and never burns oil. The brakes could be a bit stronger, even after replacing some parts, as they still squeak. I've heard that rear wheel bearings can be a common issue with Subarus, but the AWD is absolutely fantastic. I never want to get rid of this car!

I was looking for a car that could handle steep hills during snow storms while still getting good gas mileage. Luckily, I found a 1995 SVX AWD and have been extremely satisfied with my purchase. On the highway, I can get up to 28mpg even when driving at around 90mph @3500rpms. In the city, I get about 19mpg, but it's important to note that this car requires premium gas. One of the things I love about this car is that it has no trouble handling tough conditions. For example, I was able to drive up to Alta, Utah for a powder ski day even when only 4x4's and cars with chains were allowed up the canyon. Additionally, the zinc coating under the paint helps reduce corrosion and the fender wells are designed to keep splashes and road tar from going all over the car's body. Overall, I think the Italian styling is great too!

I've had this car for almost 5 years now. When I bought it, it had 80k miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to get the transmission fixed twice, but thankfully it was under warranty. I also had some issues with the front rotors warping, but I was able to improve the situation by getting some aftermarket 'low heat' pads and turning the rotors. I did have a couple of instances where the power steering hoses popped off, but overall I still enjoy driving this car.

This is a great car! From the automatic climate control to the 230 horsepower engine, it's clear that this car is a quality ride. While parts may be slightly more expensive than most, it's a well-built AWD car that screams excitement.

I have owned 2 SVX's and while they look awesome, I will not be owning another one due to the transmission issues that I experienced. Unfortunately, the cost of fixing the transmission is extremely high and this seems to be a common problem with these cars. It is a shame that such a beautiful car has this issue. If I had an Art Gallery, I would display this car as a static exhibit, as it is a stunning piece of design.
