Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme problems

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is a mid-size car produced by Oldsmobile between 1966 and 1997. It was positioned as a premium offering at the top of the Cutlass range. It began as a trim package, developed its own roofline, and rose during the mid-1970s to become not only the most popular Oldsmobile but the highest selling model in its class.

It was produced as a rear-wheel drive two-door hardtop, sedan, and station wagon into the 1980s, and a convertible through 1972. In 1988 Oldsmobile sought to capitalize on the brand equity of the Cutlass Supreme marque by replacing it with a downsized front-wheel drive model based on the GM10 platform W-platform.

When production ended there was no direct replacement for the Cutlass Supreme, although the Intrigue introduced for 1998 was designed in size and price to replace all the Cutlass models.

    I really like the way the 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme looks and how comfortable it is. It's a shame that being a GM product of the 90s means that it eventually falls apart. When you get a few miles on it, things just start to break!

    Great car so far! It's been in the family for about two years or 25,000 miles. I have a 3.1L and I do seem to have a mysterious oil leak somewhere. It seems to lose a quart or so every 1500-2000 miles. Besides that, I have no major complaints. It's a nice ride and has decent acceleration for a sedan.

    Although I have had some issues with this car, I am confident in my ability to handle them. I have had to replace the transmission, fuel pump, water pump, and alternators, as well as the fuel injector system. While these repairs have been costly, I am confident that I have made the right decisions in keeping this car running. I am determined to continue driving it for as long as possible.

    I purchased this car in 2009 as a 1997 model with 69,000 miles and it has been mostly reliable. Although the A/C does not work and the head gasket needed replacement, it has been trouble-free otherwise. The car's MPG is not very good, only about 17 city/23 hwy. It is not very fast and has poor handling with tremendous understeer and scarily poor brakes, as if the ABS does nothing. However, it performs well in snow and ice. The interior is not very comfortable but has decent space. The car has excellent visibility and is surprisingly quiet except for wind noise, although the ride is a bit jittery and not tied down.

    I understand your frustration with the car. It seems like there have been a lot of issues with the controls, power windows, antennae, and trim. The plastic trim in the trunk panel and the paint on the wheels have also been problematic. Additionally, the dashboard rattles due to the use of different materials. The hinges on the trunk door also take up a lot of space. I hope we can find a solution to these issues.

    I really love this car! The 3.4 DOHC engine is definitely the way to go, although it can be a bit pricey to change the timing belt. I previously owned a '95 3.1 version and this one is MUCH quicker. I've had to do some repairs on it, such as the AC compressor and cruise control module, but nothing unexpected for the mileage. The 5 spoke Olds wheels really make it stand out from the standard Cutlass. If you're buying the 3.4 version, make sure to keep up with maintenance on the timing belt.     I bought this Olds Cutlass Supreme brand new in March of 1995 and it has been a great car ever since. I even had an aftermarket CD player added to it. Over the years, my sons have done a lot of work on it and it has never let us down. Although I made the mistake of having the dealer fix the blown head gasket way back, I should have let my sons do the work. Nowadays, we still use it as a backup car when my newer car has repair issues. Recently, I drove it on the freeway on I-15 to Rancho Cucamonga, Ca from the High Desert and it performed great. The AC works really well and it gets good gas mileage. When you step on the gas, it goes! Lots of people have tried to buy it, but it's worth a lot to us and we still need it. My late husband had hand controls added when it was brand new, grab bars & e-brake lever. He sure enjoyed driving it. GM reimbursed us for the hand control & grab bar equipment. When he passed away, I had those removed except for the grab bars. I drove it to work for quite a few years, doing a lot of California freeway driving. Hands down, it's the best car I ever bought. It has passed the California smog check every time with the first test.

I can tell that you really love your car, especially the way it handles. Although, you mentioned that you think 2nd gear is set at too low of a ratio. That's interesting! I'm not too familiar with the technical details, but it's great that you've managed to get it up to around 200hp. I also agree that the 5 spoke wheels that came with it are really nice.     I recently purchased a 94 Olds Cutlass 3.1 from a private owner for $1700, which was a great deal compared to the $2500 he was asking for. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with the CHECK SOON ENGINE LIGHT since the first month of owning it. Although it still drives okay, it's been difficult to find parts for it, especially in the back where the rear speakers are located. It looks like it was damaged by rats and I'm hoping to find a way to get it redone. I've had to replace two water pumps, dealt with A/C issues twice, replaced two fuel pumps, and even had to put in another engine and transmission. The AM/FM CASSETTE system doesn't work anymore, and it's hard to find cassette tapes these days. I also need my car to be reprogrammed to lock/unlock the doors and I'm looking for a part to keep my trunk open, but unfortunately, it's no longer being made. On the bright side, it's a beautiful blue color. Just be careful of engine surging, as I had to take it to the shop last year when it was cutting off while making a turn or at a stop light/sign. Although it took over 10 months to find the issue, I still love the car overall.
