2009 Nissan Rogue problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It made its debut in October 2007 for the 2008 model year. Beginning in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the model has been merged with the X-Trail sold outside the North American market, making them identical. It is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States.

As of 2023, the Rogue was manufactured at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee, United States and at the Nissan Motor Kyushu plant in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan. Between August 2014 and March 2020, it was also built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea under contract.

First generation (S35; 2007)

The first-generation Rogue made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2007. It replaces the Nissan X-Trail in Canada as Nissan's entry-level SUV and the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico due to the Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the Suzuki Equator, although the Xterra continued on sale in the United States and Canada through 2015 after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after the 2008 model year.

The first-generation Rogue was available in three trim levels in the United States: S, SV and SL, available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Common 2009 Nissan Rogue problems

The Nissan Rogue, a compact crossover SUV, has been a popular choice for many car buyers since its debut in 2008. However, some model years have been plagued with issues, particularly transmission problems, as reported by owners.

The most common problem across all model years of the Nissan Rogue is transmission issues, with the 2013 model year having the highest number of overall complaints.

The 2013 Rogue also has problems with the A/C and heater not working properly, with an average cost to fix of $2,200 and an average mileage of 32,000 miles.

The 2013 Rogue has been rated as the worst model year due to a higher number of overall complaints, repair costs, and average mileage when problems occur.

The Nissan Rogue's transmission issues can be attributed to the use of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in all models.

In addition to transmission problems, the 2013 Rogue also has issues with the A/C and heater not working properly, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers, especially in extreme weather conditions.

To avoid these issues, it is recommended to avoid Rogue models manufactured from 2008 to 2016 and the 2018 model if possible.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Rogue has been a popular choice for many car buyers, it is important to be aware of the potential issues, particularly with transmission problems, that have affected certain model years. By avoiding these problematic years, buyers can ensure they are getting a reliable and safe vehicle.

Again I paid over 1500.00 to have it repaired, I no longer have the photographs or the actual parts.

  • VIN: JN8AS58V79W
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have a 2009 Nissan Rouge. The CVT TRANSMISSION is failing. I know there was a recall on certain 2009 Rouges for this. Mine is not on the recall list but I think it should be. Its leaking fluid bad, just all of a sudden. It won’ t accelerate after I stop at a traffic light , it’s sluggish, sometimes it feels like the engine is going to fall out when I do finally get it to go, it smells hot, it sputters and jerks when on freeway and in traffic I’m not sure what it’s going to do. I’m a 67 year old woman who is on a fixed income. I can’t afford a new car or to have another transmission put in this one. Nissans are suppose to last forever. They are supposed to be reliable cars. I need help

  • VIN: JN8AS58V19W
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: The driver's side seat is laying flat back and will not come up when I press the button. It has been like this for about two weeks. I am not comfortable driving the car but I need to have my mobility. I have a small special needs child and have not had her in the car since and have used uber on occasion. I live within public transportation in NYC so I have been taking a chance and driving like this to the subway and using the trains. I would like to see if my vehicle can be repaired under the recall #R21B9 regarding electrical issues, because based on what I am reading my issue is exactly as noted. Please review my incident and assist me in having the issue repaired. Thank you

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • VIN: JN8AS58V39W
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger side airbag indicator light flashes continually on the dash and stays illuminated on the console. AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-05
  • VIN: JN8AS58T99W
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: A vehicle was purchased from Pristine Auto Sales in Hopkinsville, KY. Following the purchase, the vehicle was inspected by a licensed mechanic and he reported the following, "I/We ("Licensed Mechanic Shop") inspected "Owner's" 2009 Nissan Rogue vin# XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX today due to her hearing grinding when applying her brake to stop and the vehicle is pulling to the left when applying the brake to stop. I also noticed the airbag light is on as well. Upon inspection the brake pads, the pads in the rear of the vehicle are metal to metal (on the inside) and the front pads are 1mm thick. According to NHTSA vehicles should not be on the road or even be sold from a dealer with brake pads any thinner than 3mm. It is a MAJOR safety concern as it will cause an accident. Also, after inspecting why the airbag light was on, it is found that one or more of the occupant sensors are defective and therefor causing the airbag system to be disabled. In the event of an accident the airbag system will not work. It is also against NHTSA for a vehicle to be sold with a defective Safety system such as Airbag system." The issues were present upon purchase. The purchaser is not knowledgeable about vehicles. Given that the vehicle was sold with the safety concerns already present, it appears that this auto sale business is not in compliance with NHTSA and mechanic has spoken with the business and they were unwilling to cooperate to ensure repairs were made on vehicle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-16
  • VIN: jn8as58t89w
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated, and the "Passenger Air Bag Off" warning message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed with occupant sensor unit failure. The front passenger seat and the occupant sensor unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer, Nissan of Melbourne (440 S Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32901) and Mike Erdman Nissan (4640 FL-520, Cocoa, FL 32926) were made aware of the failure and informed the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to file a complaint with NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 126,000. Consumer called 3 different Nissan dealers in our local area (Pat Fischer Nissan, Nissan of Melbourne, and Mike Erdman Nissan) and they concurred you cannot just buy the sensor, you must order the seat which contains the sensor (seat part #873A2JM30B). The list price is $1,630.45—even with Nissan dealer installation, the seat must be ordered and paid for in advance and is not returnable as it is part of the Air Bag System. The labor cost is approximately $230-$250 when you add in additional shop fees and taxes, the total repair cost is in the $2,000 range.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-25
  • VIN: JN8AS58V39W
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I contacted Nissan July 2018 and was told there were no reports of the issue I was having... Unfortunately what I've experienced seems to be common. I occasionally work as a self employed artist and on long trips my Rogue will refuse to speed up. It doesn't matter how hard I press the gas pedal. It's like something isn't connecting. Nissan said they couldn't find any reports of this happening but I see many complaints. The suv refuses to go over 20mph, sometimes even lower. This issue has put my life at risk many times and I'm wondering what it will take for something to change!? It happened going uphill multiple times and seems to happen when traffic is at a stop and go. The only recall issue I saw had to do with snow and salt getting in somewhere. This seems to happen when it's warmer outside.

Negative 2009 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Jayce Runolfsdottir 2024-11-29

If you are considering purchasing a Nissan Rogue manufactured before 2013, please be cautious. I had a negative experience with one that I purchased for $6500 with 88k miles. Despite having a recall fixed to prevent an electrical fire, it still caught on fire. After researching, I found that there are over 500,000 complaints about random electrical fires in Nissan Rogues. Unfortunately, Nissan will not reimburse you for any damages caused by these fires. Additionally, the car is not the best performer on hills or highways and can be a rough ride. However, it does perform decently in the snow if you activate the AWD. Please note that the AWD has a trial period and may turn off without your control. Please consider these factors before making a purchase decision. Thank you for your attention.

  2. Haleigh Schowalter 2024-10-21

Despite being certified, my used 2009 Rogue has had multiple issues since I purchased it less than a month ago. Although the dealer claims to have resolved all six issues, the wobbling while driving at 30-45 mph persists. The service manager tried to convince me that this is normal and due to the torque conversion being engaged, but I find this explanation hard to believe. I have not been able to find any other complaints online about this issue. I am confident that this problem can be resolved and I will continue to work with the dealer until it is.

  3. Moises Reichel 2024-08-01

I made my purchase in the spring and trusted my dealership to be honest with me as a loyal customer. However, I was disappointed to find that the AWD feature on the Rogue was badly misrepresented. In my experience, it seems to be more like a high priced enhanced traction control rather than a true AWD system. Unfortunately, it did not perform well in the snow and I found myself sliding all over the road. I learned that salespeople may prioritize profit over customer satisfaction. If you are looking for good, safe performance in the snow, I recommend getting an AWD vehicle that engages and stays engaged in AWD/4x4. It was an expensive lesson for me, but I hope this information helps others make a more informed decision. Thank you, Ken Ganley Nissan, for your service as a loyal customer.

  4. Dameon Price 2024-07-29

The 2009 Nissan Rogue exhibits vibration during reverse and a whistle sound at 40 mph. Additionally, there is noticeable noise from the back seats while reversing, likely due to hidden gaps. These issues can be confidently addressed with proper diagnosis and repair.

  5. Reece Fritsch 2024-07-28

I am confident that the issue you experienced with your vehicle is not a common occurrence. It is unfortunate that you had to spend over $1200 to replace the front wheel bearings and right side axle and boot to trans at 72,000 miles. However, it is important to note that every vehicle is unique and may require different levels of maintenance. It is impressive that your 1998 CRV with over 200,000 miles has never had any mechanical problems in 16 years, but it is important to remember that each vehicle has its own set of circumstances. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Positive 2009 Nissan Rogue car reviews

  1. Holden Windler 2025-01-07

The visibility towards the rear for backing up and monitoring traffic is unfortunately very poor.

  2. Adrien Kub 2024-11-06

Drives like a car, with a smooth ride and just pure fun. It's definitely a great buy for your money!

  3. Fred Haag 2024-10-22

I never really considered this car until my wife and I went shopping for a small SUV. We test drove the CRV, but it just wasn't comfortable and the design (both inside and out) didn't appeal to us, despite my love for Honda. We decided to check out the Nissan dealer to see what they had, originally to look at a Pathfinder. However, we were both intrigued by the Rogue sitting on the lot. After talking to the salesman, we decided to take it for a spin. The drive was beautiful - so smooth, quiet, and comfortable. The interior is well-designed and the Bose sound system is wonderful. In my opinion, this SUV outperforms every other SUV on the market. Nissan has definitely earned the top spot.

  4. Rhiannon Abbott 2024-10-09

I had been searching for a CR-V / RAV4 but was unable to find a good deal. Feeling frustrated, I decided to check out the Rogue. After taking it for a test drive, I was pleasantly surprised. The car drove smoothly, looked great, and was much more affordable than a comparable CR-V or RAV4. I ended up purchasing an SL with premium package and sunroof, and my family and I absolutely love it. The car averages around 26-27 mpg and has some great features, although we do wish it had more trunk space. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase!

  5. Rashad Lowe 2024-09-26

Out of all the cars I looked at, including the CRV, Mazda Cx6, Rav4, and Saturn Vue, I stumbled upon the Rogue at a Nissan dealer and it was the clear winner. The interior is much nicer, the ride is great, and it has plenty of power. The highway mileage is an impressive 31.5 at 60-65, and combined it gets about 21-22mpg. The bluetooth is the best I've seen and the keyless entry is a pleasant surprise. The steering is smooth and handles road imperfections with ease. The hatch has adequate room, the seats are comfortable, and the fit and finish is excellent. Although I wish it had a telescoping steering wheel, nav system, and better rear visibility (back up sensors and cam would be nice), I don't think adjustable headlights are necessary.
