Common 2010 Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV produced from 2009 to 2020, has been reported to have several common problems across various model years, including the 2010 model. These issues range from engine problems to electrical failures and interior accessory troubles.
One of the most prominent problems with the Dodge Journey is engine issues, particularly in the 2009 model. These problems can include a dying engine while driving, a ticking sound from the engine, and a check engine light that remains constantly on. These engine faults can be both expensive and dangerous, making it essential to consider more reliable models.
Brake problems are another significant issue with the Dodge Journey, particularly in the 2009 to 2012 models. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. These issues can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous, especially for those who drive at high speeds. It is crucial to maintain brakes regularly to avoid these problems, but selecting a more reliable model is also essential.
Electrical failures are another common problem with the Dodge Journey, particularly in the 2009 model. These failures can cause the engine not to start at all, with some owners reporting that their vehicles may not start most of the time, forcing them to abandon their vehicles and get them towed. Some owners have also reported that their Journeys may shut off while driving in the middle of the road. These electrical problems can be caused by faulty wiring, which has prompted multiple recalls in the 2009 model year. If you own an affected vehicle, taking it to your dealership for recall-related repairs is crucial.
Interior accessory troubles are another issue that some models of the Dodge Journey may face. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between. These issues can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense, making it essential to invest in a version of the Dodge Journey that has a stable interior.
In summary, the Dodge Journey has had some common problems across various model years, including engine issues, brake problems, electrical failures, and interior accessory troubles. It is essential to consider these issues when investing in a used Dodge Journey and to select a more reliable model to ensure safety and cost-effectiveness.

SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05

- Summary: My active headrests on the front seats have suddenly sprung, i.e. they have opened up. The car was parked in my yard, no other vehicles around, no accident/fender bender. I went out one day and the headrests were both opened up. This is a known problem for Dodge (at the time it happened, I researched) and they did extend the warranty for ten years; however, my vehicle is a 2010 so past that extended warranty. This is an expensive fix. I am a senior on a fixed income and wonder if there is any way to remedy this problem?

Within the last 30 days I have installed a new alternator and starter. Walmart has installed 4 new batteries due to it being under warranty. So as of today I can't start my car. All the interior lights come on and radio but won't turn over. I tried to get a jump 3 times but still nothing. I am disabled and can't get on public transportation or barely walk up stairs. I'm at zero income and awaiting approval from SSI. So I need someone to assist with this nightmare please. I honestly don't know what else to do

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
- VIN: 3D4PH5FV0AT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I (and several other owners of a Dodge Journey vehicle) have noticed the horn sounding randomly. Myself and others with the same complaint believe it to be a faulty/failing Horn Contact Switch, located in the steering wheel. (I believe it is MOPAR part # 5189428AC ) The safety concern is that horn sounds randomly. When this happens while stopped at red lights, motorists in front of me tend to rapidly accelerate into cross traffic. I believe the safety concern is self explanatory. As it is a random occurrence, it has not been confirmed by a dealership. (Though there are countless videos posted to YouTube as well as complaints posted to message boards.) There are no warning lamps or indications that a connection is faulty/failing. According to my research, this has been an ongoing issue for Dodge Journey owners for several years.

Appears to be an issue with security system. Replaced TIPM and still having issues with all of the above. My truck is dead every day, replaced battery twice & crack shaft sensor, still having issues. There is a ticking noise and sounds like my truck is trying to turn itself on without the key in the ignition. Airbag light will not go off. This vehicle is 13 years old and Dodge needs to do a recall for all the issues people are reporting.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-23
- VIN: 3D4PG5FV2AT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brake system has ongoing and continuous defects, malfunctions and failure. I have had calipers fall off and pr stick causing the wheel to overheat and melt the tire rim. Replaced all that. Brakes never seem strong enough to properly stop this vehicle safely. Brake lights stay off and on light a Christmas tree. Had several inspections for code errors. Replace entire system in January of 2023. $1,800. Less than 500 miles later, another caliper sticks, then snaps causing entire break assembly to move, damaging yet another wheel rim. I love this vehicle. The room, style. But it's not safe. I've almost caused an accident on the road 3 times due to this useless brake system. This last incident put me in a ditch. It's still in the mechanics shoo. Severe wheel damage this time.

- Summary: Follow-up with the article in regards to a possible electrical problems in older Dodge Journey after a woman was trapped and died when her SUV caught fire in December. Issues reported warning lights started flashing, windshield wipers came on, the horn started honking, windows wouldn't go down and the doors wouldn't unlock. Those are of the TIPM that have been reported for years and nothing has been done. I have personal experienced everything that others witnessed with 2009 except for I have not had a fire yet, I have been stuck in my vehicle for times due to window won't go down and doors will not unlock. Horn , lights, wipers, continue to go off I have to pull fuses out all the time just so not to disturb the neighbors as it happens at all hours not just when driving it. It caused a brand new battery to swell up that was caught by a mechanic, the TIPM has been changed 2 times now and still have issues along with the battery was replaced 3 times so far and maybe this is why I have not had a fire because I continue to get a new one. This has been happening for

2010 Dodge Journey recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2010 Dodge Journey.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2009-2016 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured July 31, 2007, to November 12, 2016. After exposure to cold temperatures, the power steering return hose may rupture at engine start-up causing a loss of power steering assist.
- Consequence: A loss of power steering assist may require extra steering effort, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering return hoses, steel tubes, and power steering oil cooler, free of charge. The recall began on May 24, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S08.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured June 29, 2007, to June 17, 2010, and 2008-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles manufactured January 26, 2007, to June 17, 2010. Road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs, free of charge. The recall began on May 26, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R03. Note: This is an expansion of recall 11V-139.

We take it on vacation every year and it never gets tired. It can go for hours and hours on the highway without stopping to refuel. The ride is very comfortable for 16 hours of driving. The only problem is that it has frequent brake wear and every once in a while it won't start. The solution is simple: turn the key to on, shift to neutral, turn the key off, turn the key to start, and voila! Overall, this car has great performance, and I would definitely buy one again!
-
I love this car! It makes me happier than any car I've previously owned. It has everything you could possibly need to be comfortable and feel safe. I just read that it has a 5-star rating for both the driver and front passenger, with airbags in places I never even thought of. Plus, there are always five of us in the car, and it fits seven very comfortably. There are even hidden compartments everywhere!
-
I see that you switched from a short wheel based Town & Country. I love the style and it handles great! Although the 4 cylinders may not be as responsive as the 6, I understand that you need better mileage.
-
I just bought the Journey because it was the most reasonably priced cross-over out there and I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality. It is the quietest ride I have had in any vehicle for a long time. It looks great and is a blast to drive. The only downside is that I haven't been able to find any aftermarket wheels to fit. I would buy it again in a heartbeat!

I traded my Plymouth Voyager 4-cyl. with 280,000 REAL MILES, which I got new in 1998, and drove it to death. Having had good luck with my mini-van, I wanted to give Dodge another try. So far, I have driven the new car for just 1500 miles, but I am already impressed with its quiet, solid, and comfortable ride, as well as its good mileage for a v-6, averaging 24 miles per day. Overall, I am confident in my decision to choose this car.

I have a Dodge Journey, but unfortunately, it has been giving me some trouble. At just 10,000 miles, I needed new rotors, and at 11,000 miles, new brake pads. Now, at 21,000 miles, I need new rotors again. Additionally, my computer box is going out, which causes some issues when starting the car. Despite having some parts on the turning wheel replaced, I still have trouble backing out of my driveway due to a loud grinding noise. The visibility is also not great, which makes backing up a bit challenging. Overall, I've had to take my car to the shop quite a bit, but I'm hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon.

I am sorry to hear about the troubles you have faced with your Dodge Journey. It must have been frustrating to have it in the shop so many times and to have experienced such inconvenience. It is understandable that you feel upset about the situation. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

The car had to be repainted due to faulty paint at the factory. At 30,000 miles, we had to replace the front and back rotors and pads. Currently, there is a shimmy in the chassis caused by a bad Kumho tire, which can be repaired for $267.00 per tire. It is important to note that for 19
Adalberto Moore 2024-09-28
I have owned seven Dodges since I was a teenager, starting with a 70 T/A Challenger. That car was a blast to drive and I never had any issues with it, other than those I caused myself. However, my experience with Dodge has not always been positive. For instance, I had an 87 Ram 50 that had a bad engine right from the start. It was a new motor, but I almost had to resort to the lemon law to get Dodge to fix it. Then, there was my 2013 Charger SXT, which had electrical problems from day one. I traded it back in less than a month for a 2010 Journey, which looked nice but had way more problems than I wanted to deal with. For example, it wouldn't start sometimes, and even when it did, we had to wiggle the shifter to get it going. We took it to the dealer, but they couldn't replicate the issue. Eventually, we found out that the WIN module needed to be replaced under recall, but even then, it took the dealer over two weeks to fix it. During that time, we had to rent a car, which was a real financial strain. Unfortunately, the problems didn't end there. The brakes were very bad, and the car shimmied when we applied them. We even had the rotors replaced, but that didn't solve the problem. The dash was also dead, and none of the features like flashers, ESP, or cruise control worked. To make matters worse, the car ate through tires like crazy. All of these issues caused me to miss so many days of work that I actually lost my job with that company. At 59 years old, it's not easy to find another job in this economy. Therefore, I would advise against buying a Dodge Journey. My experience has been regrettable, and Dodge has not been helpful in resolving these issues. They simply said it was a powertrain issue and that I was out of warranty. I can tell when someone is reading from a script, but that was not the case here. I want to share my experience with Dodge's customer service, and I hope they can improve their service. I had some issues with my car, and it took a while to get it fixed, but I am hopeful that Dodge will take care of their customers. I am disappointed with the recalls, but I am willing to give them another chance. Recently, I had an issue with my car, and it was fixed by Garber Chrysler Dodge. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication with my finance company, and my car was repossessed. This has affected my credit score, and I am planning to take legal action. I have talked to some lawyers, and they believe that this is an easy case. I hope that Dodge will settle this issue before it costs them more. Despite this experience, I am still open to buying another car from them in the future.

I was hoping to find an alternative to a minivan and thought the Dodge Journey would be a good fit. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. The interior is quite small and doesn't even have enough space for my compact purse. The seats are cramped and uncomfortable, and I've had issues with the brakes since I purchased the car, with premature and uneven wear. I had to replace both the front and back brakes at just 50K miles. Additionally, the ignition gets stuck in ACC mode and won't turn off, which drains the battery when I take the key out. Although recall work has been done on this issue, it has only gotten worse since then. The transmission is also clunky and always feels like the car is about to shake apart when moving from park to reverse. I am very disappointed in this vehicle.
