The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.

It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".

The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).

Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

In the affected vehicles, grease applied to the contact points inside the ignition switch may become conductive and overheat.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch overheats there would be an increased risk of a fire.

    Hi there! I bought this car 10 years ago when it was 2 years old and had 30K miles on it. While it has served me well, I have had some issues with it over the years. I've had to replace the exhaust system six times, and the cloth seats have ripped apart from the leather backing. Additionally, the brake cylinders fail inspection every year, and changing the oil can be a bit of a hassle. I've also had to replace the cv joints three times. Lastly, I've noticed that the headlights are quite dim, even when newly replaced. Despite these challenges, I'm grateful for the time I've had with this car, but I'm now looking forward to finding a new one that better suits my needs. Thanks for listening!

    I'm glad to say that I get great mileage from my car. Although I've always had trouble with its low height - I tend to scrape anything that's even slightly uneven - it has served me well. However, there are some interior features that still bother me, such as the low radio and the awkwardly placed wiper knob. Despite having had the car for some time now, I still miss my previous one at times. Nevertheless, I'm happy that the body style has remained modern and attractive. Fortunately, I've only encountered a few minor issues with the car, so I hope this review doesn't jinx it!

    This car has great gas mileage, getting between 28-35 mpg, which is phenomenal. Although it struggles a bit in the mountains of Colorado due to being underpowered, it still has plenty of life left with only 106,000 miles on it. While I sometimes wish for a more powerful car, I know it will be hard to find one with such great gas mileage.

    Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it with only 43000 miles on it and sold it with 52000. While it was reliable, I found that the engine was way too underpowered and it was not accurately reflected in the gas mileage. The only repairs it needed were at the body shop to replace a broken seat. Overall, it was a decent car, but I don't think I could ever go back to driving one of these. Thanks for listening!

    I bought it new and still have it. I don't plan on selling it, I'm going to paint it and keep it forever. It's a great little car, mine is a stick shift, the gear ratios are a little close, but it's fun driving on twisty roads. It's extremely comfortable, with very good ABS brakes and discs all around. I have no complaints whatsoever.

    I really enjoyed driving this car! I purchased it from my cousin when it had 60,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, after driving it for 8 months, I got into an accident (which actually speaks to the power of this little engine). I was really upset about it. The car was a bit slow to start from a stop, but it was a breeze to drive and pass in the fast lane. It also had plenty of trunk space and I never noticed any strange noises, smells, or vibrations coming from under the hood or anywhere else. I had a 5-speed manual and loved it. Overall, it was a very reliable car. I even looked for another Protege to replace it.

    It's a 95. I bought it in May 2000 with 97k miles. I was a bit worried about future maintenance costs, but it's been smooth sailing so far. I've only had to replace the battery and rear muffler in the past two years. The ES is a higher end car than the LX or DX, with more features and horsepower. I'm really happy with how it performs and I plan on keeping it for another two years.
