The first-generation model was developed and built in Brazil by Ford Brazil since 2003, at the Camaçari plant. The second-generation model was launched in 2012, which was assembled in factories in India, Thailand, Russia and Romania. The vehicle entered the North American market for the first time in 2018, until its discontinuation after the 2022 model year. Throughout its existence, the EcoSport shares its platform with the Fiesta.

First generation (BV226; 2003)

The first generation EcoSport was designed by Ford Brazil Development Center under the program code BV226, and the codename "Amazon Project". It is based on the European Fiesta and Fusion MPV, sharing the same Ford B3 platform.

The EcoSport became one of Ford's best-seller models in Brazil, consistently appearing on the twenty best selling vehicles. It was also popular in Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Its main competitors were the Fiat Palio Adventure and Volkswagen CrossFox. In 2011, cumulative sales reached 700,000.

Common 2018 Ford Ecosport problems

The Ford EcoSport, a subcompact crossover, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. Here are some of the issues reported by owners:

  • Gearbox problems: The PowerShift (DCT) dual-clutch gearboxes in older second-generation Ford EcoSports, particularly from 2012-2017, were prone to severe breakdowns. These issues resulted in the automaker upgrading to a more reliable automatic gearbox that uses a torque converter in 2018. Problems with the dual-clutch gearboxes included shearing or jolting in transmission, clunking sounds, and inability to unlock the gearbox.
  • Noisy or grinding brake pads: Several owners have reported grinding noises coming from the EcoSport brakes, particularly in the 2018 model. Potential causes include low-quality or damaged brake pads and worn brake rotors.
  • Jerky transmission: Another common complaint about the EcoSport is its jerky transmission, especially when coming from a stop. This can lead to issues with gear changes and acceleration. Possible causes include low transmission fluid, a faulty solenoid, and worn transmission bands. The most common fix is to replace the transmission altogether.
  • Doors won't lock: A few users have reported that EcoSport doors won't lock whenever it's raining or wet or during colder weather. This issue can range from annoying to downright dangerous. Potential causes include faulty lock actuators, a blown fuse, or a bad lock relay switch.
  • Exhaust flex pipe failure: The exhaust flex pipe in the EcoSport can fail, leading to a loss of power and increased emissions. This issue is more prevalent in the 2015 model.
  • ABS error message: Some EcoSport owners have reported receiving an ABS error message, which can indicate a problem with the anti-lock braking system. This issue can be caused by a faulty wheel speed sensor or a problem with the ABS control module.
  • Rear window shattering: A few owners have reported that the rear window in their EcoSport has shattered twice, which can be a safety concern. The cause of this issue is not clear.
  • Oil pump making noise after replacement: Some EcoSport owners have reported that the oil pump makes noise after replacement, which can indicate a problem with the new oil pump or the installation process.

These issues can affect the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Ford EcoSport. It is recommended that potential buyers research these common problems and consider the costs and risks associated with them before purchasing a used EcoSport. Regular inspections and maintenance can help identify and address these issues, ensuring the vehicle remains safe, efficient, and reliable on the roads for years to come.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: MAJ3P1TE0JC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: In about July of 2023 car stalled at the light , then eventually started. Upon arriving home I turned the car off then tried to restart it started in battery mode? I tried shutting it back off and the vehicle started rolling down the hill at about 3 mph and would not allow me to shift gears or steer the wheel. Brakes were not functioning. Once I reached the bottom of the hill I pulled the Emergency brake to stop the car. Car was towed to the Ofrd dealership and was in the shop for 2 weeks with them trying to determine what happened and what caused the failure. The dealer after 2 weeks said it was the computer system that needed to be reset. Which I found to be odd as it should not have taken that long if it was only the computer system. Fast forward to 2024 new recall on the vehicle, that sounds like what happen to my car in 2023 . Solution was supposed to be available in a few months and here we are in at the end of the year with no solution. I don't want to keep driving the vehicle with a chance it may stall on me without notice. There has yo be some kind of resolution as I would want a tragic accident to force a qui ker turn around.

  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:OIL/LUBRICATION:PUMP
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Ford Focus and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSport vehicles. The oil pump drive belt or drive belt tensioner may fail, resulting in a loss of engine oil pressure.

Negative 2018 Ford Ecosport car reviews

  1. Scotty Altenwerth 2024-11-14

    1. Unfortunately, a spare tire is not included with the tube of tire sealant. However, it can be a helpful solution for ordinary flats. 2. According to item #5 on page 5 of the Tire Warranty Guide provided by Ford for the Bridgestone/Firestone Limited Warranty, the warranty does not cover tires with sealant, balance, or other filler material that was not originally applied or inserted by the tire manufacturer. This means that if you use the sealant to make it to a Bridgestone/Firestone dealer, the tire warranty will be void. Additionally, if you experience a more serious problem than the sealant can repair, you may be stranded on the road, which can be a stressful situation.

  2. Geoffrey Parisian 2024-10-11

The 2018 Ecosport has had some issues with the power train, thermostat, and exhaust/gas smell through the vents at low speeds. Additionally, some drivers have reported poor gas mileage, lack of power, dead space in the accelerator pedal, and radio resetting to AM constantly. It's also worth noting that there is no spare tire and the interior can feel cramped with limited space to set things down. Despite its cute appearance, especially the lightning blue ones, it's important to be aware of these potential issues.

  3. Manley Braun 2024-09-28

I recently traded in my Ford Fusion due to high mileage, but as a loyal Ford owner, I was excited to try out a new car. My friends describe it as 'cute', but I found the interior to be quite small and made mostly of plastic. The sound system is decent and the gas mileage is fair. The 'turn off' feature at stops can be a bit annoying, and the car doesn't accelerate very quickly. However, once you get going, it's easy to pick up speed. I was looking for a vehicle that could handle sudden rain on Florida roads, so time will tell if this car is up to the task. On the plus side, the rear door opens easily with the side door and it's simple to get things in and out. With some seat and shelf reconfiguration, there's plenty of room for storage. UPDATE: I ultimately decided to trade the car in, and unfortunately only received $4000 for it despite low mileage and no body damage. The car was just too small and difficult to drive, especially on slick roads.

Hi there! I'm really hoping that Ford will consider manufacturing this model in the US. I have some experience with Indian products and while they may look shiny, they tend to wear out quite quickly. Thanks for listening!

I've been driving this car since April 2018 and have put on 77589 miles since then. It's a great little Dune buggy of a Crossover/SUV that always gets me where I need to go. While it may not be the most powerful or the fastest, it's reliable and never seems to want to quit. On the highway, it gets around 28-30mpg depending on the terrain and speed limit. Out here in the West, where the speed limits are 70-80mph, it can be a bit harder on fuel mileage. The vehicle is fun to drive and can be pushed with a good set of tires. With snow tires, it's an absolute beast. I've driven it through 1-2 feet of snow here in the West with limited issues. The only issues I've run into are: the driver and passenger side mirrors come loose when moved too far out and can occasionally fall out, the catalytic converter failed at 55,245 miles and Ford replaced it under warranty, and the fabric skid guard fell off, which the Ford dealer replaced under warranty. The lack of a spare tire of any type is a real pain when somewhere remote with limited service, which happened to me once and was beyond frustrating. The lack of surface/traction adjustability (snow/sand/mud/hill assist modes) can be a bummer when off-road or in sketchy conditions. It could have a larger fuel tank and a little more power for better long distance and highway driving. Overall, it's a great vehicle that punches far above its weight class. Unfortunately, at 78,000 miles, the transmission failed. Ford would not assist nor help cover the repairs as this is outside the warranty period. The transmission was faulty, and they would not take any onus of responsibility.

I've had my EcoSport for about 18 months now and drove it from VA to MN. The gas mileage was near 40 MPG, which was fantastic! I wasn't sure if I would like the fact that the engine turns itself off when you're at a light, but let me tell you, it starts up when needed! I was sitting at a light outside of Leesburg when a dump truck came barreling into my lane. My engine started up, and I swerved onto the side to avoid what I'm sure would have been one bloody mess. So, I'm much more at ease with that feature. The car fits me like a glove in the driver's seat too. I instantly felt comfortable when I did a test drive. I don't know why there aren't more on the road! Give it a shot!

Traded a 2017 Fusion SE. It was a good choice and I love the way it drives.

I’ve had the car for one year now and I am very happy with my purchase. The car has many great features such as a sunroof, backup collision warning, and ample driver space (which is great for me as I am 6 feet 3). Additionally, the car has good gas mileage at 29 mpg and after almost 18000 miles, I have had no mechanical problems. The car also has excellent traction in snow and icy roads. The navigation and radio system are both excellent. The only negative is that the car does not come with a spare tire, but I was able to find a donut spare on eBay which took care of the issue. Overall, I highly recommend this car and I am sure you will enjoy it too!

This car is fully loaded and comes at an affordable price. I absolutely love it! I want to thank Mr. Mario Magnaye for spending 4 hours of his time with me. Thanks to him, I found the car of my dreams and his service was truly awesome! I am grateful to Rusty Eck Ford Wichita.
