2017 Nissan Rogue sport problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan. It made its debut in October 2007 for the 2008 model year. Beginning in 2013 for the 2014 model year, the model has been merged with the X-Trail sold outside the North American market, making them identical. It is currently Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States.

As of 2023, the Rogue was manufactured at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Tennessee, United States and at the Nissan Motor Kyushu plant in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan. Between August 2014 and March 2020, it was also built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, South Korea under contract.

First generation (S35; 2007)

The first-generation Rogue made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on 7 January 2007. It replaces the Nissan X-Trail in Canada as Nissan's entry-level SUV and the body-on-frame Nissan Xterra in Mexico due to the Smyrna plant freeing capacity for the Suzuki Equator, although the Xterra continued on sale in the United States and Canada through 2015 after being withdrawn from the Mexican market after the 2008 model year.

The first-generation Rogue was available in three trim levels in the United States: S, SV and SL, available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Common 2017 Nissan Rogue sport problems

The 2017 Nissan Rogue has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the brakes, forward collision avoidance system, and engine.

  • Forward Collision Avoidance System: The forward collision avoidance system has received 4 complaints of its own with the NHTSA. This system is designed to prevent collisions but seems to malfunction and slam on the brakes when there is no danger of a forward collision. This can lead to collisions from behind, as other drivers may not have time to react to the sudden stop.
  • Engine Issues: Drivers have reported that the engine can have 'jerky' performance or be sluggish when accelerating from a complete stop. This can be potentially dangerous, as it can cause unexpectedly slow speeds and unreliability.
  • Additional Problems: Other common problems with the 2017 Rogue include airbag sensors malfunctioning, electrical failures, seats not attached properly, poor exterior lighting, and seat belts not buckling correctly. While these may seem like minor issues, they could potentially lead to accidents or make accidents more dangerous.
  • Transmission Issues: The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport is known to have problems with its continuously variable transmission (CVT), which can cause transmission failure, loss of power, overheating, and jerking or shuddering while accelerating. These issues have led to several recalls and a class action lawsuit against Nissan.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) Malfunction: Malfunctions in Nissan's AEB system are causing vehicles to suddenly brake even when there are no obstructions on the road ahead. This can create dangerous situations, often leading to rear-end collisions.

In conclusion, while the 2017 Nissan Rogue has its strengths, it is important to be aware of these common problems, especially those related to the brakes, forward collision avoidance system, and engine. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become significant safety concerns.

  • VIN: JN1BJ1CP5HW
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: On Wednesday [XXX], I brought my car to AutoNation Nissan in Pembroke Pines Florida due to non-functional windshield wipers. By Wednesday, August 21st, I was informed that not only were the windshield wiper motors inoperable, but a part called the engine harness was also required for repairs, and this part was not available. . I also reached out to my extended warranty program and spoke with Siena at Nissan Corporate, who provided me with case number [XXX]. The part number needed is ASSY-24012-6 MA OC. Despite my repeated follow-ups every three days with Sienna, I have been informed each time that the part remains on backorder with no estimated arrival date and that a loaner vehicle cannot be provided. Consequently, I am now forced to drive my car without windshield wipers, which is unsafe. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • VIN: JN1BJ1CP9HW
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The air bag light turned on in the dashboard and I took it to the dealership they charged a diagnostics fee and said that the OSC sensor and control unit need to be replaced. I reported to them that I thought maybe the kids dropping water behind the seat was what triggered the light but it turned out that water never touched the components and it just failed on it's own. I checked for recalls for my VIN and found nothing however my car falls under the OSC recalls for my make and model it's just that my VIN isn't included for whatever reason.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
  • VIN: JN1BJ1CRXHW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Rogue Sport 2017, 52K miles: The A/C was not blowing and I took it into Firestone where they said it was a weak air compressor (this shouldn't be the case on a low mileage car). A week later the hood started smoking and upon inspection the coolant level was 1/4 tank and the engine malfunction light was on. I took it to and independent service center, Bass Auto (Nolensville Road, Nashville TN) and they said it was NOT SAFE to drive (engine can overheat and catch fire) due to a Radiator Coolant Fan (part # 214816MA0B or 214816MA0A) and that they have had to fix many of the these. The fan is responsible for blowing the cold air from the AC and keeping the engine cool so poses risk of engine failure. Looking at Reddit and facebook groups there are many people that have this issue on low mileage Rogue/Rogue Sports (Years 2017 - 2020) and there is a class action lawsuit that was filed in the State of Tennessee for this issue (XXX et al vs. Nissan - link below). I am having to spend > $1K to repair and this is a common issue that is unsafe and not recalled. [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
  • VIN: JN1BJ1CP5HW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: --This vehicle had a serious problem with the Roof Wiring Harness that, according to the dealer, could have caused a fire. Attached is a copy of invoice 258752: Cost to repair was $1,952.06. The initial symptoms were malfunctioning map and visor vanity lights and they first appeared about March 2024 --This exact same problem was the subject of a recall for 2017 Rogues. However, for some reason, the recall did not extend to the "Sport" models. Since this was the exact same dangerous condition that resulted in a recall and repaired at no cost that was covered by the recall, the recall should be extended to the "Sport" model. I also wanted to alert you to problem that probably exits in all "Sport" model that could also endanger the owners of those vehicle. --I contacted Nissan (case #51188260) on April 24, 2024 and they denied our claim for reimbursement since the "Sport" model was not included in the recall. Clearlyly, all Nissan Rogue models should have been covered by the recall --The initial symptoms were malfunctioning map and vanity lights which appeared in March, 2024.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
  • VIN: JN1BJ1CR4HW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: After I paid for the Reset and pulled out of the CS garage my vehicle started jerking and grabbing. I took the CS representative in my vehicle and Jackie felt this. The issue could not be found. I took the auto back and now I received paperwork saying that the issue could not be duplicated. I took my vehicle then in October 3rd, 2023 with an appointment at 1p. The issue could not be found. I had 2 different times 2 techs ride in the parking lot. The car's drive shaft was taken out and another was placed in. Tech drove and the issue remained. My old drive shaft was returned to the vehicle. Next, my AWD coupler was unhooked. I didn't feel the issue. Then this was hooked back up. I was told around 4: 45p that day that the service tech was going to call me the next day, No invoice was received. Now I had a whirling/rubbing sound anytime the vehicle was moving along with the jerking. The CS rep never called me and I called a few days later. I was told the part wasn't cheap and it was the AWD coupler. The phone estimate for working on the vehicle with labor, and the part was 2500 and taxes. That was the verbal phone estimate. I took my cousin to Parkway on October 9th. We received a paper estimate. This is a similar problem to your NTB20-069. The exception is below 20 mph for the jerking, and turning the wheel for turns. Worse at very low speeds. Such as looking for a parking spot in a parking lot and right about ready to turn I get jerking and feel as if it bounces forward and backward as I was told AWD issues will feel like this. I was told the part will be ordered and I believe if it's similar to NTB20-069 there is a defect in the AWD. (the work/labor for 10/3/2023 and the replacement of the AWD coupler will be on the final bill) The other complaint form for another issue on 8/2/2023 is when it started AFTER receiving the invoice and starting to pull the vehicle out of the CS garage doors.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
  • VIN: JN1BJ1CR4HW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The Air Bag Light on the instrument panel came on for no reason. I took the vehicle to the dealership. I had to pay for a reset to have been done. There were 2 or 3 codes that came up. I was told and the paperwork said that the technician resolved the problem. I went to start the vehicle and the instrument panel light was off for the air bag and I have 2 new issues. The seat belt light is on and now after 10 seconds, the passenger airbag light goes from yellow to off as someone is sitting in the seat. The only way that the seatbelt light clears off of my instrument panel is by buckling the passenger side seatbelt. The dealership said that the issue had to be called into a tech higher-up. I never have received an answer. I had the codes programmed in and taken out and the original issue still exists I don't know if all airbags are not working as my instrument panel airbag light is on and don't actually know if the passenger side is actually working or not.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
  • VIN: JN1BJ1CR4HW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: about a year after I had the car (2019), the A/C went out. We fixed it at the Nissan dealership. Periodically, the engine would stop when I went reversed. This mainly happened in the summer. About two years ago, the A/C went out again. I noticed both the stalling in reverse and the A/C not working (not sure if related). The engine stalled and smoke came out of the engine. We fixed the engine--basically saying that it was an A/C issue. Last year during the summer months, the same thing happened. We again, fixed the A/C. This year, it happened again.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22C5.

Negative 2017 Nissan Rogue sport car reviews

  1. Domenick Kreiger 2024-09-10

I purchased my Rogue Sport in August and experienced issues with the Forward Emergency Braking system by October. Despite taking it to Downtown Nissan in Nashville and involving Nissan USA, the problem could not be identified. However, I have evidence of the issue occurring while driving. I am disappointed with Nissan's response to my concerns and their inability to resolve the issue. I urge caution to those considering purchasing a Rogue Sport and suggest exploring other options. It is important to feel confident in the safety of your vehicle and the support of the manufacturer.

  2. Reese Bogisich 2024-08-29

I purchased this car in February 2018. While the LED headlights are great, I have had some issues with it. Unfortunately, Nissan USA and the local dealership did not respond to my complaints. The road noise is excessive, making it difficult to hear the warning beeps for the blind spot or lane departure even with the radio off. The Intelligent Lane Intervention feature is not reliable and can be unsafe. It sometimes misses the lane departure without warning and wanders too far over the lane before reacting. I notified Nissan USA and the local dealership of this defect in writing, but never received a response. The Econ button is located below the dash and has to be activated every time when starting the car, which can be inconvenient. The

  3. Claude Kunde 2024-08-06

In April of 2018, we purchased a 17 Rogue Sport SL AWD as a leftover. It was a stunning car and my wife was immediately smitten with it. However, after a couple of months, I began to voice my concerns about the car. Unfortunately, there were several issues that arose that were unacceptable. The engine would constantly surge on the highway, which was very frustrating. Despite Nissan's claims that it was normal, it was clear that it was not. The CVT in these vehicles was also problematic, with slipping, whining, and constant hunting for the correct simulated gear. The final straw was when the air conditioning stopped working on a hot day during a road trip. It was a shame to have to trade in a 3-year-old car with only 33k miles on the odometer, but we couldn't deal with it any longer. We replaced it with a new 2021 Mazda CX-30 Premium, which we are thrilled with. Although our experience with Nissan's customer service was disappointing, we are happy to have moved on to a better car.Had they put more effort into addressing our concerns, we might still be Nissan customers. I'm not just referring to the dealer level, but also Nissan Corporate. It seems that they do not prioritize their customer base. Although the car was visually appealing, I cannot give it more than two stars.

  4. Francesco Ratke 2024-07-11

My wife's 2017 Rouge experienced multiple issues, including transmission failure at 11k and 23k, computer system failure at 27k, and currently, the engine is running hot at 90k due to a fan system failure. Unfortunately, the power train warranty does not cover the cost of the repair, which is estimated at $1600. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in our decision to pursue legal action as part of the class action lawsuits. We are hopeful for a positive outcome and will continue to prioritize our safety and satisfaction in future vehicle purchases.

  5. Clifton Fisher 2024-06-10

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up that there have been some transmission problems reported with this model. Also, my radiator fan went out recently. It actually had some issues during the warranty period, but unfortunately, it wasn't completely broken at that time, so they couldn't fix it. Just thought you should know!

Positive 2017 Nissan Rogue sport car reviews

  1. Chelsey Stiedemann 2024-11-19

Great little SUV! It has a slightly underpowered engine, but the looks, fit and finish are impressive and well above some of the competition. The 360 degree monitor is a phenomenal feature and it makes parking in tight spaces a breeze. Mine is the SV trim with the all weather and technology package. The heated steering wheel is an awesome feature. The seats are supportive without being overly firm and the cabin is extremely quiet for a vehicle in the class. I will definitely be financing it once my lease is over. This one is a keeper!

Overall, we really liked the car. It was fun to drive and felt great on the road. We were able to get the exterior color we wanted, which was a plus. However, we did have a few concerns. The car did not come with a navigation system and was primarily set up for iPhone compatibility. As Android users, we found it difficult to integrate our phones with the car's system. Additionally, the black interior was not ideal for us, as it tends to get very hot in Arizona and shows every speck of dust. The dealership only had black interiors available, which was disappointing. The car also had terrible side visibility, with large blind spots that even semi trucks could hide in. Despite these issues, we did appreciate the car's mechanics. However, we ultimately decided to sell it due to the ongoing problems we had with it. We now drive a 2011 Ford Escape Limited, which we absolutely adore. It has better gas mileage, works well with our phones, and has a stable and solid ride. We are especially fond of the heated seats and sunroof. We will not be purchasing another Nissan product after our negative experiences with the Versa and Rogue.

This is a great car. It's very roomy inside and has a nice amount of trunk space.

According to the report, the transmission is not making any noise. Additionally, I have loaded it up with a bike rack for trips and it has proven to not be underpowered. While it does have a tight and sporty ride, it actually rides better than my mustang. The only negative aspect I have noticed is that it tends to under steer in the rain, which could be a potential issue for less experienced drivers.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased this vehicle specifically for work travel, and I'm really enjoying it so far. The ride is great, and the amenities are a nice touch. Plus, the price was very affordable. Thanks for your time!
