2012 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 2012 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The 2012 Chevrolet Malibu has an average number of complaints from owners compared to other midsize cars on the market. However, there are several common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most common and severe problems is a timing chain tensioner failure. The timing chain guide is made of plastic and is a weak spot in the engine. Replacing the timing chain assembly costs $2,000 to $3,000 depending on local labor rates and the number of damaged components.
Fuel delivery problems are also mentioned. The fuel pump, and connectors fail regularly around 60,000 miles. Replacing the entire pump assembly costs around $1,300.
Steering problems, including a complete loss of power steering, are another frequent problem. The electronic steering motor fails around 100,000 miles, and a power steering failure message shows up on the driver information screen. Replacing the assembly is the only solution, costing about $1,000.
There are 3 recalls, better than other cars from 2012. Recalls include the brake lights, steering shaft u-joint, and seat belt anchors. Most serious is the u-joint failure since a separation increases the risk of an accident.
The 2012 Chevrolet Malibu is average-priced compared to other midsize cars from the same year with a price range of $7,732 to $12,374, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price range was $22,110 to $30,200. Depreciation is average, losing about 40% of the original value in the first 5 years of ownership.
In addition to these problems, there are some common issues that owners should be aware of. These issues include transmission problems, electrical issues, and interior accessory faults. However, these issues are relatively uncommon and can be easily resolved with proper maintenance and care.
Overall, the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu is a reliable car, but like any car, it requires regular maintenance to ensure its reliability and longevity. Regular maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake inspections are essential to maintaining the car’s reliability. According to RepairPal, the annual maintenance cost for a Chevrolet Malibu is around $545, which is relatively low compared to other cars in its class.

- Summary: As I was driving my vehicle last Sunday the "Power Steering and the Service ESC" warnings came on my dashboard as well as the "Traction Control light" I audible sound came on and I lost power steering. When I went to drive my car to my service station everything worked fine for a few blocks the problem came back. I drove it to my local service mechanic and his scan tool gave an error code of CO545. I did some research on this issue and found that GM put out a Special Coverage #15356 for the power steering sensor. This coverage expired in 2021 however my vehicle did not have this problem until last week. My car only has 60,000 miles on it. Yesterday I took my vehicle to the GM dealer that I purchased my vehicle from and the said I have to pay $200.00 for them to diagnose the problem (which I understand) but the service writer told me that GM will probably not replace the parts needed because their "Special Coverage" expired in 2021. I am asking if the government can force GM to recall. I thank God that my wife nor my daughter was not driving the vehicle when this happened or they may have been hurt or worse fighting the steering wheel to keep the car going straight until I could stop it saftly.

Turning the car off and back on usually resets the problem. It is extremley difficult to steer the car when this happens. It began intermittently about 3 years ago when a local mechanic looked at it but he couldn't find anything wrong. It's failing much more frequently (every other trip) now. It has about 62000 miles on it. So far, no accidents but a few close calls. Another problem is that the SERVICE AIR BAG indicator comes on when someone sits in the passenger seat and the car is started. It can be reset but it's an scary situation. I don't think this is related to the steering problem but not sure.

2012 Chevrolet Malibu recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured April 8, 2010, to October 11, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cables that connect the seat belts to the vehicle at the outside of the driver seat and the front passenger seat may be bent from being sat on while entering the vehicle. This repeated bending may result in the cable breaking.
- Consequence: If the cable breaks, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the outboard lap anchor mounting bracket and inspect the flexible steel cable, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 16, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15031.
- Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.
- Consequence: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and dealers will refund the purchase price or replace the steering shafts, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.
- Consequence: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will attach the wiring harness to the BCM with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to both the BCM and harness connector and the BAS and harness connector, and will relearn the brake pedal home position, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed an Interim letter to customers on July 14, 2014. The recall began on August 18, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). GM's number for this recall is 13036.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with the new car my workplace provided me. They replaced my old 2009 Impala with a 2012 Malibu. The Malibu has a more modern exterior design, which I really like. However, I did notice that the ride is a bit stiffer compared to the Impala. The steering is also very light, which reminds me of my grandparents' Buick from the 80s. On the bright side, the build quality seems to be really good, with a solid 'Ka-thunk' sound when the doors close. The interior graphics for the trip computer and clock could use an update, but I do appreciate the power adjustment for lumbar support. In terms of fuel efficiency, I've been getting around 22.5 MPG with E85 in the 1500 miles of mostly highway driving I've done so far. Let me know if you have any questions!

I bought my Malibu used, but it still rides like a brand new car. I absolutely love the smooth ride it provides, along with its great look. I opted for the top-of-the-line model with chrome 16-inch wheels, chrome door handles, low-profile tires, and leather/suede interior with power everything. I especially love how it sits low to the ground, giving you a sports car feel with the comfort of a luxury car. It also has great gas mileage and handles well in the snow. This is actually my fourth Chevy, and it's definitely my all-time favorite!

This car is known for its reliability and has had no major maintenance issues. I've owned mine for just over 4 months and so far, it's been great. While I have had a few minor issues, such as limited overhead room for someone over 6', and the steering wheel being a little too close to my knees, these are minor comfort issues in the grand scheme of things. The turn signal can be a bit annoying, but overall it's a quiet ride with natural acceleration and smooth braking. I'm very satisfied with my driving experience, whether it's a short or long distance. The only major issue I had was replacing the headlight, which can be a bit difficult and costly to have a mechanic do. However, I'm still very happy with my car overall.

I introduced my wife to the 2011 Malibu (Summit white) LT1 model when it was new, and she loved it so much that she bought it. In May 2013, I decided to buy my own 2012 (former lease) with 14,000 miles for a great price. It's the same color, but it's an LT2 model and loaded with heated seats. We often joke about it, saying that it feels like we're driving an expensive car that we only paid $17,000 for each. We know that there are cars out there that cost $50k+ and are all about name brand and status symbols, but we can't afford those. In our own way, this Malibu is our Mercedes or Audi. We feel grateful to own two cars with the same color and park them in our driveway at our cozy home. We know that there are less fortunate people out there who only wish they could own a Malibu like ours. We are very happy and proud to have them.

I bought my car new. Before I purchased it from the dealer, it was driven by a salesman to Florida. The only major issue I have had is that the tires lose air frequently, even after getting new ones multiple times over the years. Despite this, I am very happy with my Malibu. It's been with me since 2012 and now, in 2023, it has 218,000 miles on it!

I bought my 2012 Malibu brand new with only 400 miles on it. I have diligently changed the oil every 3000 miles and have only put 80,080 miles on the car since then, and it’s now 2019. Unfortunately, the other day it suddenly stopped running, and upon inspection, it was discovered that a cam sensor had failed along with the timing chain. Despite my meticulous maintenance, there was no indication that this was happening until it was too late. Regrettably, there is now metal in my oil, and the car is essentially beyond repair. I had hoped to get at least 150,000 miles out of this car without any major issues, especially given my careful upkeep. However, I am confident that I did everything in my power to maintain the car and that this was simply an unforeseeable mechanical failure.

Although I have had some issues with this vehicle, I am confident that it can be a reliable car with proper maintenance. I purchased this Chevrolet Malibu in January 2018 and it will be paid off in January 2023. I have driven it for short distances, about 15 miles per day. I have had to replace the engine once, but with regular maintenance, I am confident that it will continue to run smoothly. I recommend that potential buyers do their research and consider all options before making a purchase.

I bought the car used a year ago and it was running great. I have been diligent in keeping up with oil changes and maintenance. However, recently the heat and air stopped working. My husband attempted to fix it, but it turned out to be an issue with the car's wiring. As a result, some of the panel features are also not functioning properly. I have had some trouble with this car, which is unfortunate. While I cannot recommend this particular Malibu, I encourage you to do your research and find a car that meets your needs.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Malibu LT1 4cyl. I purchased it brand new to replace my 1998 Malibu base 6cyl, and I have to say, I'm really happy with my decision. I have a 66 mile one-way trip to work, which includes 50 miles of open interstate driving and a bit of stop-and-go traffic through town. I opted for the 4cyl because it was more affordable at 19K, compared to the 6cyl which started at 30k. I convinced myself that the 34mpg would make me feel better, and I'm happy to report that I'm averaging 28mpg, which is even better than my previous 6cyl's average of 26mpg. The only issue I've had so far was when the map sensor failed and needed to be replaced, but it wasn't a warranted part. Overall, I'm really pleased with my purchase and would definitely recommend the 2012 Malibu LT1 4cyl to anyone looking for a reliable and efficient car.

This car is stylish and comfortable to drive, but unfortunately I've experienced some issues with starting it. While Chevy claims they are not aware of any problems, I have my doubts. The car has left me stranded three times in the past two weeks, turning over but not firing. I ruled out the fuel pump, fuse, and relay, so it must be something else. I ended up trading the car in to a different dealer than where I bought it. Interestingly, when I took my new car in for routine maintenance, I was informed that the Malibu had been sold but then bought back because no one could figure out the intermittent starting issue. The dealer ultimately decided to sell it for parts or junk due to its age and mileage. On a positive note, the car's trunk was quite spacious, although the opening was a bit small for larger items.
