2016 Toyota Highlander problems

The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

At no point did a safety mechanism turn on to stop the trunk from opening. We had a few prior experiences with the trunk failing to stop if something was in its way, demonstrating that there is an issue with the sensor or there is no sensory system in the car that would prevent it from crushing something or someone. After contacting Toyota, they stated that this was not covered under the warranty of the vehicle.

Negative 2016 Toyota Highlander car reviews

  1. Wyman Kemmer 2025-01-02

The Highlander is a great car overall. It has a soft ride and good acceleration, although it lacks road feel. The vehicle is well put together with high-quality materials, which is typical of Toyota. However, the instrument panel could use some improvement. It seems to have been designed by someone new to the technology. Unfortunately, most of the options won't save as default, the GPS is not very good, and using the touch screen while driving can be too distracting. The menus are not very intuitive, and some important features require the use of sub-menus. These are things that you might not notice during a test drive, but they can become quite annoying after owning the car for a while.

  2. Jaylin Beer 2024-06-27

The Highlander used to be one of the best rides around, however, the latest version is a real kidney shaker. This may be fine for those who wish to tear around corners, but it's brutal on a long distance drive. Although the Limited version has better suspension, it still falls short of the earlier models.

Positive 2016 Toyota Highlander car reviews

  1. Tomas Green 2024-11-08

If you're considering selling your car, it's usually better to sell it privately than to trade it in. Look for a friendly salesperson who is eager to make a sale, and be prepared to negotiate the price. Don't be afraid to walk away if you're not happy with the deal. Consider searching for your desired car throughout the whole state, as it may be worth the trip if the price is right. Before making a final decision, take the car for a test drive. When you're ready to finalize the purchase, be prepared to speak with the financial officer. They may offer you service and extended contracts, but remember that you have the option to purchase other extended contracts before Toyota's warranty and road service ends.

  2. Robert Brekke 2024-10-25

I've only owned the car for a month, so I can't speak to its reliability yet. However, I was thoroughly impressed with the ride quality and creature comforts during a recent road trip with my two kids. Although the fuel economy wasn't great (we averaged 20 mpg with a cargo box), I'm hoping that it will improve as the engine breaks in. The Highlander has comfortable seats, plenty of storage and passenger space, and good acceleration and handling. However, the limited edition lacks some safety features that other vehicles in this class include as standard. Additionally, the plastic covering on the 'premium' wheels and the underpowered JBL stereo are disappointing. The navigation screen glare is also an issue due to poor positioning. After 6 months and 6K miles of ownership, the Highlander is holding up well. However, I still find the gas mileage underwhelming and the center armrest too high, resulting in occasional shoulder pain. I also wish the automatic rear hatch opened and closed a bit quicker. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. In summary, the Highlander provides the right amount of space, power, and has a firm grip on the road. However, some of the 'details' are lacking. Toyota seems to have cut a few corners to save on build costs.

  3. Orval Lynch 2024-10-23

I love my Highlander!!!! It's attractive, quiet, reliable, and comfortable. I've had three Highlanders and have kept going back for more!!! The only thing that I don't like are the colors of the new ones. The Silver looks like a tin can silver, and the Pre Dawn Mica is more brown than it appeared online. Other than that, there is nothing to complain about.

  4. Boyd Greenfelder 2024-10-07

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your SUV! It's great to drive and does a fantastic job of insulating you from the road and traffic noise. I understand that you had a concerning experience with a strange buzzing noise coming from underneath the rear end about 5 hours after it was turned off and parked in the garage. However, after doing some research, it seems that this is a normal sound that occurs during a fuel evaporation leakage check and does not indicate a malfunction. It would have been helpful if the dealership had mentioned this during the explanation of the other features at the time of purchase. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to assist you!

  5. Jayce Barrows 2024-10-02

Every winter, my family and I travel to Florida and we needed a vehicle that could accommodate all our belongings, two cats, and a kayak while still providing a comfortable ride. The Highlander was the perfect choice. What I love most about this SUV is how smooth, quiet, and comfortable it is to drive. It feels incredibly solid on the highway, and the blind spot monitors are a lifesaver when changing lanes. The Toyota Entune tech package with NAV is fantastic and easy to set up and use. Although there are a couple of minor issues with the SUV, such as the glove box door hitting the passenger's legs when opened, and the Limited version not having automatic high beam/dimming, it still has almost everything my Cadillac DTS has. I considered three other vehicles, including the Pathfinder and the new GMC Acadia, but the Highlander stood out as the best option. Our local dealer, Capital Toyota in Chattanooga, was incredibly hospitable and easy to deal with. I highly recommend this mid-sized SUV to anyone in the market for one.
