2010 Nissan 370z problems

nissan logo

The Nissan 370Z (known as the Fairlady Z Z34 in Japan) is a 2-door, 2-seater sports car (S-segment in Europe) manufactured by Nissan Motor Company. It was announced on October 29, 2006, and was first shown at an event in Los Angeles ahead of the 2008 Greater LA Auto Show, before being officially unveiled at the show itself. The 370Z is the sixth generation of the Nissan Z-car line, succeeding the 350Z. The 370Z marks the last production car with a naturally aspirated and high-rev V6 coupled to a manual transmission. The 2020 model year was the final model year for the 370Z. The line was continued by the Nissan Z (RZ34) on a modified version of the same platform.

Initial release

Engineering

Almost every piece and component of the 370Z has been redesigned from the previous 350Z. The wheelbase is 4 in (100 mm) shorter at 100.4 in (2,550 mm) and an overall length 2.7 in (69 mm) shorter at 167.1 in (4,240 mm). The overall width has been increased by 1.3 in (33 mm), the rear track by 2.2 in (56 mm), and overall height reduced by 0.3 in (7.6 mm). The smaller exterior dimensions and use of more lightweight materials helped reduce weight.

The 370Z features a front aluminum subframe, aluminum-alloy engine cradle, aluminum door panels, an all-aluminum hood, and an aluminum hatch. Front body torsional rigidity is improved by 10 percent with an extensively revised body structure, which includes a new front suspension cradle to reduce front body lateral bending, new rear structural reinforcements, and an underbody "V-bar" to help reduce rear lateral bending. Rear body torsional rigidity is improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical bending rigidity is improved by up to 30 percent. Additional enhancements include the use of a carbon fiber composite radiator housing and strengthening of the rear fender and hatch areas. The new structure weighs slightly less than the 350Z.

The 370Z uses a front double wishbone suspension, with forged aluminum control arms and steering knuckle. The rear multi-link suspension uses a forged aluminum upper control arm, lower arm and radius rod, the toe control rod is steel and wheel carrier assembly is aluminum. The refreshed 2013 model uses new dampers with the Sport package models. The brakes have been changed from the more expensive Brembo racing brakes to Nissan branded brakes which are manufactured by Akebono.

The coefficient of drag is 0.30 and 0.29 with the Sport Package, figures identical to the 350Z.

Common 2010 Nissan 370z problems

The Nissan 370Z, a popular sports car, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. This article will discuss these issues in detail, focusing on the 2010 model year.

  1. Concentric Slave Cylinder (CSC) Failure

The CSC is a crucial component of the 370Z's manual transmission system. When it fails, the clutch pedal may stay depressed, and the car won't go into gear after trying to shift.

  1. Rear Axle Clicking

A common problem with the 370Z is a clicking sound from the rear wheel when it is turning. This issue is caused by the axle nut and its retainer stretching apart and loosening despite the extra security from the cotter pin.

  1. Engine Spits and Sputters

Low fluid in the fuel tank can move around and cause the fuel tank to draw in air, leading to the engine spitting and sputtering while driving. To prevent fuel starvation on the 370Z, it is recommended to keep the gas tank closer to FULL.

  1. Premature Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders

The transmission's clutch master cylinder (CMC) and concentric slave cylinder (CSC) are prone to failing prematurely in the 370Z, especially in models equipped with a manual transmission. Signs of failing CMC and CSC include fluid leakage from the clutch and not-so-smooth gear changes.

  1. Stock Exhaust Failure

Nissan didn't design the 370Z with the most durable stock exhaust system. It has a tendency to gradually rust away, especially in snow-prone states where regular exposure to road salt causes the metal to corrode. A better long-term solution is to install a high-quality aftermarket exhaust made of 304 stainless steel, which can better withstand Mother Nature's elements.

  1. Fuel Starvation Problems

When there's a low level of gas in the tank, the 370Z can experience a fuel starvation issue. This problem typically doesn't occur on straight stretches of highway but will most likely happen when taking tight curves. Drivers who routinely take their car to the track should be even more concerned. Although the engine may initially begin to putter, it can completely stall at any time. Nissan recommends refueling before the car's low fuel warning light turns on. Ideally, you should never even allow the fuel level to drop below a quarter tank.

  1. Above-Average Oil Consumption

Under the hood of the Nissan 370Z sits a quick-revving V6 engine, which develops more than 330 horsepower. While this engine will last for a long time when properly maintained, it can experience above-average oil consumption. This is especially true when owners surpass the 100,000-mile mark. To prevent trouble, it's important to top up the oil when needed. Allowing the oil level to dip too low can stretch and damage the car's timing chain. Replacing this part can be a complicated job, which means the cost of labor is often steep.

In conclusion, while the Nissan 370Z is a popular and reliable sports car, it is not without its common problems. Owners of the 2010 model year have reported issues such as CSC failure, rear axle clicking, engine spits and sputters, premature clutch master and slave cylinders, stock exhaust failure, fuel starvation problems, and above-average oil consumption. By being aware of these issues and taking preventative measures, owners can ensure their 370Z remains a reliable and enjoyable vehicle.

2010 Nissan 370z engine

What are the main problems with a 370Z?

Most are negative; complaining about clutch failures, steering lock, axle bearings and bushings, oil consumption, paint, and on and on. If you are to believe what is being said you would never buy one and get rid of it if you already had one. My wife has a 2011 370z that she uses a daily driver.

What is the bad year for 370Z?

The 2010 model was a bad year for the Nissan 370z. CarComplaints named it the “Worst Model Year” of the 370z with 166 complaints and no recalls (which is surprising). As mentioned, this model's steering wheel lock remains a major issue but seems more pronounced here.

Is the Nissan 370Z a reliable car?

The Nissan 370Z Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 23rd out of 36 for compact cars. The average annual repair cost is $504 which means it has lower than average ownership costs.

Are 370Z cheap to maintain?

A Nissan 370Z will cost about $6,157 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular coupe models by $1,266. There is also a 17.36% chance that a 370Z will require a major repair during that time. This is 4.14% better than similar vehicles in this segment.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-09
  • VIN: JN1Az4FH4AM
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My 370 Z Nissan was towed January 16, 2018 because of a problem with the electronic steering mechanism. The mileage at that time was 35,357 miles. Upon entering the car the steering wheel had locked and I could not start my car. Fortunately the car was in the garage at the time. total for repairs was $949 On March 29, 2018 a few months following with mileage at 35,857 miles I again experienced a steering lock problem and the car had to be towed once again …the repairs were covered at that time by warranty since this device was already replaced in January. December 9, 2021 I again experienced a problem with the steering lock mechanism mileage is 42,505 at this point on the car repairs were almost $1800 I find this a huge safety problem because I am a female and could be stranded at any time at any given place with a vehicle that wont operate…. This does concern me as I do travel out of town alone at times. I also drive at night from time to time . I did ask that the mechanism be disabled and was told by the mechanic at Nissan they were not allowed to disable the mechanism. My husband spoke with consumer affairs at Nissan and they were not willing to help us with this problem. I have considered selling the car but I’m not comfortable doing so without disclosing this problem to a potential buyer. My husband I researched this issue online and it appears that many people have experienced the same issue with their 370 Z vehicles

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-13
  • VIN: JN1AZ4EH1AM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: THE SRS LIGHT CAME ON ON THE DASH. CAR IS 10 YEARS OLD, BUT ONLY HAS 24073 MILES ON IT. NISSAN DEALER IDENTIFIED ERROR CODE B1018. OCCUPANT SENSOR IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT FAILED. NISSAN QUOTED $4767 TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SEAT BASE ASSEMBLY. STATED SENSOR WAS INTEGRATED INTO THE SEAT AND COULD NOT BE REPLACED WITHOUT REPLACING THE ENTIRE SEAT CUSHION. IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT NISSAN HAD A "VOLUNTARY RECALL CAMPAIGN" FOR THE EXACT SAME ISSUE ON THE 2007-2008 NISSAN 350Z. NISSAN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 08-095D IS GERMANE. THE PROBLEM IS DESCRIBED AS A FAILED OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM VARISTOR IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION. THIS IS A SENSOR THAT LETS THE CAR KNOW WHETHER OR NOT AN AIRBAG SHOULD FIRE, DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT THERE IS A PASSENGER IN THAT SEAT. DID NISSAN EVER CORRECT THIS SAFETY ISSUE? I CONTACTED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS, (CASE 42872979), BUT THEY WERE NO ASSISTANCE (ONLY STATING THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY). THIS IS A SAFETY ITEM THAT, IN MY OPINION, NISSAN SHOULD WARRANTY FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE, OR AT A MINIMUM ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE SAME COMPONENT ON THE PRIOR MODEL (350Z). THE SRS LIGHT COMES ON ON THE DASH, AND BLINKS INTERMITTENTLY. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT NEAR THE PASSENGER SEAT STAYS PERMANENTLY LIT. IN VIRGINIA (WHERE I LIVE), YOU CANNOT PASS STATE SAFETY INSPECTION WITH THE BLINKING SRS LIGHT ON YOUR DASHBOARD DISPLAY. HAS TO BE FIXED. I REPAIRED THE ISSUE MYSELF BY ACQUIRING A SECOND HAND (USED) SEAT. HOWEVER, AS I PREVIOUSLY STATED, NISSAN SHOULD PAY FOR THIS PROBLEM THAT THEY PREVIOUSLY ACKNOWLEDGED IN THE TECH SERVICE BULLETIN (FAULTY OCCUPANT SENSOR), BUT APPARENTLY HAVE NOT FIXED.

DEALER STATES THAT OCCUPANT SENSOR HAS FAILED, AND THEY WANT $4700 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE BASE ASSEMBLY OF THE SEAT. STATE THE SENSOR IS INTEGRATED WITH THE SEAT, AND MUST REPLACE WHOLE ASSEMBLY. VEHICLE IS 10 YEARS OLD, BUT ONLY HAD 24,204 MILES. OCCUPANT SEAT HAS RARELY BEEN SAT IN.. THE VEHICLE IS TYPICALLY GARAGED, AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT.

Positive 2010 Nissan 370z car reviews

  1. Parker D'Amore 2024-11-12

I grew up in Germany and my last car there was a 325i Coupe with a manual transmission. I absolutely loved it! However, I have noticed that BMW's bang for the buck has decreased since the 80s. Reliability has also been questionable, but my mechanic has assured me that the 2000+ 3 series is a great choice. :-) When the 2003Z came out, I was planning on buying it, but due to my kids, I ended up with an Infiniti G35 6MT. I drove home with a 2003 M45, which I still love and have to this day. Now that my kids are grown up, I have a 2010 Z 6-speed with a performance package in black/black in my garage. I absolutely adore this car! I also looked at a 335i Coupe 6sp manual, which was very nice, but I wasn't that impressed, especially when considering the price differential...

  2. Gavin Ernser 2024-10-24

This car is the best value for money when it comes to performance. What many people don't know is that the engine and transmission are built to be bulletproof. Additionally, it still manages to achieve an impressive 30 mpg on the highway!

  3. Emanuel Hammes 2024-10-17

I traded my 2006 350z roadster for a 2010 370z roadster. I absolutely loved the 350, but I have to say, this 370 is just fabulous! After reading through other reviews, I can't help but agree with all the positive feedback. My wife and I are absolutely in love with this car! The only downside we've noticed is the exhaust note being too quiet and unremarkable. It's a shame that the designers didn't take this into account, especially since it was mentioned in reviews of the 350. As for road noise, I personally don't find it to be too bad, even with the 19

This car is amazing! I've had powerful cars before, but this two-seater is something else. The handling is great and it corners like a dream. The motor is strong and has a very linear response. The fun factor is off the charts! I'm really impressed with the styling, especially how it pays homage to the original Z. The pictures don't do it justice. I got the Base Sport model in Black Cherry Paint, but I was originally planning on buying the 40th edition Touring Sport. However, when I saw this color, I knew I didn't need the touring package. The Synchro-rev match is pretty cool, but the motor is the real gem.

2010 Nismo Z. Exceptional build quality, with an extremely rigid chassis that feels like it will grip onto a corner forever. Please make sure to check your front springs after delivery! Some Z's are being sold with spring spacers still installed (which helps keep the bumper off the ground during shipment). Road noise is not an issue for me, but I do wish the exhaust and engine note were a bit more noticeable.
