2022 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2022 Honda Civic problems

Common problems with the Honda Civic 2022 include issues with the fuel pump module, side airbags, emissions, and electrical system.

  • Side airbags: A small number of examples built between 12 April and 31 July 2017 might not deploy as intended in a collision. It is advisable to speak with a Honda dealer to establish if your car is affected by this.
  • Emissions: Some Civics made from the start of production up until 23 May 2018 could have a problem with the engine's emission control software that would require an update to be performed by a Honda technician. It is recommended to contact your dealer to find out if your example is affected by this.
  • Electrical system: Some owners have reported electrical niggles with the Honda Civic 2022. It is worth checking the electrics carefully when viewing a used car.
  • Adaptive cruise control: Some owners have reported issues with the adaptive cruise control system, including the car failing to slow down or the brake assist not engaging before a collision. This can lead to significant repair costs and potential safety concerns.
  • Steering problems: Some owners have reported issues with the steering system, including the steering wheel sticking at any speed and a noise from the front. This can affect the car's drivability and potentially cause accidents.
  • Sensors: Some owners have reported issues with sensors, including back brake sensors blowing and causing the dashboard to display alarms. This can lead to the car being in the shop for repairs, which can be frustrating for owners who bought the car to avoid such issues.
  • Transmission problems: While not specifically related to the 2022 model, it is worth noting that transmission problems have been a significant issue for Honda Civic owners in the past. The 2001 model year has the most overall complaints, and transmission failure is the most-reported problem.

In general, the Honda Civic is known for its reliability, with the brand ranking sixth out of 32 manufacturers featured in a reliability survey. However, it is worth noting that some owners have reported issues with the 2022 model, particularly with the fuel pump module, side airbags, emissions, and electrical system. It is advisable to check these areas carefully when viewing a used car and to contact a Honda dealer if you believe your vehicle is involved in a recall.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
  • VIN: 2HGFE2F56NH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My daughters car started having steering issues. We took the car to the Honda dealer we bought the car from for repair. Instead of addressing the recall they stated the steering issue wasn't a recall issue but when the car's vin number is pulling up a recall for steering. We took the vehicle to another Honda dealer for a second opinion and again they said the steering issue wasn't part of the recall. Neither dealer mentioned anything about repair the recall, they said the steering issue wasn't part of the recall. The second dealership stated "even if we wanted to fix the steering issue found we could because the parts aren't available for 4 to 6 months" then tried to sell us a new car. I have all this information in writing from both dealership. Both dealerships charged us a service fee for the diagnosis when we were just asking for the recall to be repaired. I filed a complaint with Honda an their investigation consisted of calling the dealership to ask what the diagnosis was, no actual investigation was ever conducted. Honda said they couldn't help us. The recall has never been addressed. They wanted us to pay $3000 or $4000 for the repairs, my daughter was the first owner of this vehicle. We find it to be suspicious that a brand new vehicle has steering issues after 2 years of ownership and coincidently Honda put out a recall for steering issues but it's not part of the recall. The diagnosis paperwork from the dealership we received specifically stated the exact same thing the recall stated on the Honda website. We need help.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: 19XFL1H7XNE
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: When I tried to start the vehicle on 10/14/24, it did not start, however it started showing various messages on the electronic dashboard. The vehicle was towed to John Eagle Honda Of Dallas (Honda Dealer) on 10/14/24 around 11:15 AM. I am enclosing the diagnostic report run on the vehicle by the John Eagle Honda of Dallas on 10/15/24 which shows some of the messages I had seen on the dashboard. My dashboard never showed me low battery at any time but the car did not start and the message of lane departure, brake failure messages came on the dashboard. I have LoJack App service on my phone which tracks everything on my vehicle.I used the vehicle on 10/11/24 and 10/12/24 and there was no issue in the vehicle nor did I see any dashboard warnings. The dealer kept the car overnight stating that they were too busy on 10/14/24 and promised me that they will provide alternate vehicle on 10/15/24 morning as per my phone call. I went to the dealership on the 15th at 8:50 AM to pick up the alternate vehicle, the service advisor said I can take my vehicle since he had changed the battery and it was safe to drive and did not provide me the invoice for the replaced battery. I asked the service advisor for the diagnostic report and he informed me that everything was okay in the report. I insisted on taking the print out of the diagnostic report and had to wait to collect it. Seeing the time on the report I am able to understand that they ran the diagnostic report while I was waiting. After driving my vehicle from the dealership and not having new battery invoice in my hand I called Honda motor company customer service and narrated my dealership visit details along with being uncomfortable on the safety of the vehicle. I didn't get any help from them as well. They created a case number for me. They said that someone will reach out to me and no one has till date. If you need any other information please feel free to contact me.

STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: 2HGFE1F92NH
  • Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: I got this car (2022 honda civic touring) as preowned a little over 2 months ago. It had 39k miles. I inspected the car and thought it looked perfect and so I got it. In getting it, i opted out on getting extended warranty for personal reason. However the car had 60 days dealer warranty. After several times driving it, i noticed that my arms get sore. I thought it was just the way it drives. I drove one of my friends car which is the same car same year and it just drives way smoother. Mine is really sticky. I have to really put effort into keeping the wheel straight. When i make slight turns, the wheel doesnt go back to going straight, it gets stuck, so i have to pull it again to go straight. I heard about the recall on this car about the steering. I brought it in to honda but they said that my car isnt affected by it and that my part was okay. Due to my schedule i was only able to bring it in until almost the dealer warranty expires. However, they said that the car was fine, that they didnt notice the issue ive been experiencing. They told me that it drove good and advised me to get an allignment done. By the time the allignment place was able to get me in, the warranty had already expired and so i was really hoping that the allignment would fix it. Unfortunately, it didnt not. My steering is still so stiff/sticky. I dont know what to do.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 19XFL2G80NE

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: 2HGFE1F98NH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: About a year after I bought the car, I noticed that the steering wheel would slightly pull to the left. I, by the way, do not have the Lane Keeping Assistant on. Anyway, I went to a car repair shop, not the dealership, and they told me it was misaligned, so I got it aligned. However, the steering wheel kept doing the same thing. It pulls to the left ever so slightly and, at points, it gets stuck, so I have to constantly apply force in the opposite direction. It feels dangerous when driving on curved roads, specially at high speeds, because as I'm turning the wheel to one side, it sticks, so I have to constantly yank it in the opposite direction, and of course the car swerves a little bit. My car is available upon request. The manufacturer just told me that it was misaligned just like the people at the car shop I went to; however, I'm seeing more and more people suffering from the same problem, which is too much of a coincidence. There are no warning lamps, messages, or anything on display. And while the problem has not been confirmed or reproduced by the dealer, it's very noticeable when you drive the vehicle because it just seems like the wheels are not properly aligned. I have driven a misaligned car before, and the steering wheel never stuck like it does with this one.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: 19XFL2H81NE
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My children fell asleep in the car, I put the car in park but left it running with ac running while I was right outside of the car doing some things. After a certain amount of time (a few minutes) the car automatically shut everything off including the air conditioning. I hadn’t left the car unattended so I knew as soon as it turned off and my children were never in danger but I’m worried the same could happen if someone left their animals (or worse case scenario children) unattended with the car running to go inside somewhere. I feel strongly that if I leave my car running with the air conditioning on it should stay running with the air conditioning on until I personally turn it off.

I have taken it to Honda dealership about 2 times regarding this issue and they do not drive it as specify to recreate the issue. The vehicle is available upon request, has been properly maintained and this issue persist, even before the date bélow of 9-4-24.

Negative 2022 Honda Civic car reviews

  1. Arvid Lebsack 2024-11-17

The design of this car could be improved, as accessing the outside door lock can be difficult and the engine shutdown at stops is not ideal. Additionally, the infotainment center placement is not to my liking. These are areas where Honda could make some adjustments to enhance the overall experience. It will be interesting to see how these cars hold up over time.

  2. Jace Paucek 2024-11-09

I recently purchased a new Civic with less than 500 miles on it. It's the Sport Sedan with the 2.0 NA motor. At first, I was absolutely in love with it. The styling is amazing and the ride is smooth and quiet. However, I've had a few issues with it over the last few days. While driving down the highway and attempting to pass another vehicle, the car lost power after revving up. This happened a few more times over the last two days while trying to pass someone. I'm not a fan of the CVT transmissions and I think Honda should consider moving away from them. This car doesn't even have 200hp and the transmission can't handle it. I'm considering trading it in for something different, even if it means taking a hit. Despite my recent issues, I still appreciate the car's initial appeal.

  3. Santiago Rosenbaum 2024-09-09

I've been driving my 2022 Civic Sport for 3 months now, and as someone who has owned several model years of Civics, I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed with this one. While the car looks great both inside and out, it lacks the power and fun driving experience that Honda advertises. Additionally, many comfort items that were previously included, such as the sunroof, are no longer available. The car also limits your ability to adjust controls like Lane Assist, and you can't program the doors to lock automatically. While the Civic Sport is not the fastest car I've owned, it still has a lot to offer. It may not have a turbo unless you go for the EX Model, but it still has a lot of great features. Overall, I'm glad that I'm only leasing this car for 3 years, but I'm still enjoying my time with it.

  4. Jose Thompson 2024-09-09

I recently leased a Honda in November 2021, which is my first Honda after owning Toyotas. The first year was mostly trouble-free, with only one minor issue where my cruise control would stop working and not turn back on unless I turned my car off then back on again. However, I have noticed that almost every time I’m on the interstate going between 69-72 mph, my RPM’s will start fluttering, which feels like I’m behind a semi. A few weeks ago, I was driving and all my warning lights came on on my dash, and the next day my car died and wouldn’t start. A couple of days later, I was parked at the mall and was leaving to go to work, and it wouldn’t start again (I hate walking to work). After it sat for the 8 hours I was at work, I walked back over and it started. As I was driving home, all the warning lights came back on. I took it to Honda, but they wouldn’t look at it until I made an appointment for a week later. I took it in, and of course, they found nothing wrong with it. When I’m at a stop light and the start-stop does its thing, it’s so clunky sounding. The interior creaks and rattles so bad even on a smooth road. Although I love the looks of the car, I am so happy I decided to lease this car rather than being stuck with it. As an update, I ended my lease early and traded it in for a 2019 Toyota Prius Limited. They have the Civic for sale for almost $28k! I hope no one pays that for that car.

  5. Kim Thompson 2024-08-05

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2022 Honda Civic. It was great for the first year, but unfortunately, I ran into some trouble with the AC during the summer of 2023. I was surprised to find that it was only blowing hot air, so I called the nearest Honda dealer to book an appointment for inspection. The diagnostic and Freon ended up costing me $640, which I wasn't too happy about. The technician told me that there was no Freon and they couldn't find a leak. However, when I brought my car back 2 weeks later, the technician discovered that a rock had hit the condenser, which was causing the issue. I was disappointed to hear that it would cost $1678 to fix the AC, especially since I live in Toronto, Ontario, where there's a lot of construction going on all the time. I don't think it's fair that rocks should be damaging the AC condenser, and I'm currently in the process of fighting with Honda Canada to get the repair covered under warranty. I also wanted to mention that my wife and son have also bought 2022 Civics and have been loyal Honda customers for years. I hope that Honda will reconsider their decision and treat their loyal customers better. Thank you for listening!

Positive 2022 Honda Civic car reviews

This Honda is very nice and has a lot of room. I couldn't be happier!

I love my new car! The safety features are incredibly helpful. Although, on country roads at night, it can get confused and think it's going off-road even though it's on the road. Additionally, the auto cruise can sometimes slow down the car unnecessarily when passing parked vehicles or when someone makes a turn. However, overall, the vehicle's safety features are very useful. The Bluetooth connection and system are awesome and easy to use. Despite being a smaller vehicle, the space is very nice and useful compared to the Civic sedan I had before this. The automatic windshield is also a helpful feature. I highly recommend this vehicle if you're interested in it!

Full of safety features and plenty of power to get around town! The insurance cost is also very reasonable.

  4. Malachi Collins 2024-06-14

This is a really good sedan to drive with great fuel economy.

  5. Brendon Bruen 2024-05-15

I recently purchased a 2022 Civic Touring sedan and I must say, I am impressed! As someone who has driven a Mazda CX5 and previously owned a 2008 Civic sedan, I can confidently say that the Civic is a spacious vehicle with a generous trunk space and second-row legroom. Despite its larger size, it still retains the peppiness of the older generation and the CVT transmission is responsive and well-tuned. The suspension is sporty and calculated to reflect its design, which may result in a bit of hardness, but the cornering capability of this vehicle is awesome. The turbo engine is powerful and responsive enough to make the driver feel confident in most driving scenarios, whether it's highway passing or average cruising. It's also fuel-efficient, consuming only 65% of my CX5's city driving mileage. However, there are a few cons to consider. Firstly, some people may not like the fact that you'll be sitting close to the ground. Secondly, the interior noise level is kind of high, probably due to the noise of the tires. Lastly, the high-tech sensors can be kind of annoying, giving you all kinds of warnings prematurely. Overall, I am expecting to enjoy this vehicle's service for a long time :)
