The Nissan 370Z (known as the Fairlady Z Z34 in Japan) is a 2-door, 2-seater sports car (S-segment in Europe) manufactured by Nissan Motor Company. It was announced on October 29, 2006, and was first shown at an event in Los Angeles ahead of the 2008 Greater LA Auto Show, before being officially unveiled at the show itself. The 370Z is the sixth generation of the Nissan Z-car line, succeeding the 350Z. The 370Z marks the last production car with a naturally aspirated and high-rev V6 coupled to a manual transmission. The 2020 model year was the final model year for the 370Z. The line was continued by the Nissan Z (RZ34) on a modified version of the same platform.

Initial release

Engineering

Almost every piece and component of the 370Z has been redesigned from the previous 350Z. The wheelbase is 4 in (100 mm) shorter at 100.4 in (2,550 mm) and an overall length 2.7 in (69 mm) shorter at 167.1 in (4,240 mm). The overall width has been increased by 1.3 in (33 mm), the rear track by 2.2 in (56 mm), and overall height reduced by 0.3 in (7.6 mm). The smaller exterior dimensions and use of more lightweight materials helped reduce weight.

The 370Z features a front aluminum subframe, aluminum-alloy engine cradle, aluminum door panels, an all-aluminum hood, and an aluminum hatch. Front body torsional rigidity is improved by 10 percent with an extensively revised body structure, which includes a new front suspension cradle to reduce front body lateral bending, new rear structural reinforcements, and an underbody "V-bar" to help reduce rear lateral bending. Rear body torsional rigidity is improved by up to 22 percent and rear body vertical bending rigidity is improved by up to 30 percent. Additional enhancements include the use of a carbon fiber composite radiator housing and strengthening of the rear fender and hatch areas. The new structure weighs slightly less than the 350Z.

The 370Z uses a front double wishbone suspension, with forged aluminum control arms and steering knuckle. The rear multi-link suspension uses a forged aluminum upper control arm, lower arm and radius rod, the toe control rod is steel and wheel carrier assembly is aluminum. The refreshed 2013 model uses new dampers with the Sport package models. The brakes have been changed from the more expensive Brembo racing brakes to Nissan branded brakes which are manufactured by Akebono.

The coefficient of drag is 0.30 and 0.29 with the Sport Package, figures identical to the 350Z.

Common 2014 Nissan 370z problems

The Nissan 370Z, a popular sports car, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. This article will discuss these issues in detail, focusing on the 2014 model.

  • Rear Axle Clicking: A common complaint among 370Z owners is a clicking sound from the rear wheel when it is turning. This issue is caused by the axle nut and its retainer stretching apart and loosening, despite the extra security from the cotter pin. The solution is to purchase a specially-designed aftermarket nut that has locks built in, which can be torqued without loosening.
  • Engine Spits and Sputters: Low fuel in the tank can cause the fuel tank to draw in air, leading to the engine spitting and sputtering when driving. This issue can be prevented by keeping the gas tank closer to full, which will prevent fuel starvation.
  • Premature Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders: Manual transmission models of the 370Z are prone to premature failure of the clutch master cylinder (CMC) and concentric slave cylinder (CSC). This issue can cause fluid to leak from the clutch and make gear changes less smooth. The solution is to install upgraded versions of the CMC and CSC.
  • Stock Exhaust Failure: The stock exhaust system on the 370Z is not designed to be very durable and can rust away over time, especially in snow-prone states where the metal is exposed to road salt. The solution is to install a high-quality aftermarket exhaust made of 304 stainless steel, which can better withstand the elements.
  • Above-Average Oil Consumption: The Nissan 370Z's V6 engine can experience above-average oil consumption, especially after reaching 100,000 miles. To prevent trouble, it's important to top up the oil when needed and avoid allowing the oil level to dip too low, which can damage the car's timing chain.
  • Rear Axle Clicking: At around 100,000 miles, some 370Z owners may begin to hear a clicking sound in the rear, which is likely coming from the rear axle. The solution is to install an upgraded nut with new washers and cotter pins, which can prevent the rear axle from sliding out from its hub.

In summary, the Nissan 370Z has several common problems that owners have reported, particularly in manual transmission models. These issues include CSC failure, rear axle clicking, engine spitting and sputtering, premature clutch master and slave cylinders, stock exhaust failure, above-average oil consumption, and rear axle clicking. While some of these issues can be prevented or mitigated with regular maintenance and upgrades, others may require more significant repairs or replacement of parts.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-26
  • VIN: JN1AZ4FH3EM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WILL NOT OPERATE WHEN THE PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE IS LESS THAN 130 POUNDS. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND WITH A DIRECT EMPLOYEE OF NISSAN AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT IS BECAUSE OF THE WEIGHT AND BODY STRUCTURE OF THE PASSENGER. WHEN I AM IN THE PASSENGER SEAT OF THIS VEHICLE THE AIRBAG TURNS OFF. I AM 5'4" AND WEIGH APPROXIMATELY 115 POUNDS.. NISSAN DOES NOT CONSIDER THIS A PROBLEM. I AM BEING TOLD THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING CORRECTLY. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE AND CAN NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS ACCEPTABLE UNDER LAW. AT THIS POINT NISSAN IS UNWILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE REVIEWED WHAT I CAN FIND ON YOUR WEBSITE AND FEEL THAT THIS IS SOMETHING WHICH IS BROKEN OR DOES NOT FOLLOW THE REQUIREMENTS OF LAW. I WOULD LIKE YOUR FEEDBACK CONCERNING THIS.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-13
  • VIN: JN1AZ4FH4EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY CLUTCH WOULD NOT COME OFF THE FLOORBOARD. I COULD NOT SHIFT INTO ANY GEAR. THIS HAPPEN 3 DIFFERENT TIMES AFTER I WOULD MAKE LONG FREEWAY TRIPS WITHOUT SHIFTING. I HAD 3 DIFFERENT, WELL ESTABLISHED MECHANICS LOOK AT MY AND DO A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. AS I WAITED FOR A TOW TRUCK. I FOUND A LAWSUIT AGAINST NISSAN FOR A FAULTY (CONCENTRIC) CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER! ON 2 OF THE OCCASIONS I WOULD LET MY CAR COOL DOWN FOR AN HOUR OR SO AND IT WOULD BE FINE. ON THIS OCCASION, I LET MY SIT OVER NIGHT. THE NEXT DAY MY CLUTCH WAS STILL ON THE FLOOR. I FULLED THE CLUTCH OFF THE FLOOR WITH MY FOOT. I TURNED THE CAR ON. THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD ALMOST GOING INTO THE HOTEL BUILDING. I PULLED THE E-BREAK AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP IN RENTON WA. I HAD TO EXPLAIN TO THE DEALER ABOUT THE LAWSUIT ON THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER. HE HAD NOT HEARD OF IT. I CONTACTED ME LATER AND AGREED IT WAS THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER. I WAS EXITING THE FREEWAY 2 TIMES AND WAS NOT ABLE TO SHIFT PAST 2ND GEAR THE TWO TIMES BEFORE. THIS LAST TIME I WAS COMING OFF THE FREEWAY AND HAD TO COAST INTO THE NEAREST DRIVE. I WAS CAUGHT OFF GUARD , I ROLLED THROUGH ONE FOUR WAY STOP WITH MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON. SO NOT TO GET STUCK IN MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-29
  • VIN: JN1AZ4EH9EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: SUMMARY: THE VEHICLE CONCENTRIC SLAVE CYLINDER (CSC), A COMPONENT OF THE TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH, FAILED ABRUPTLY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, LEAVING THE VEHICLE FORCED IN-GEAR AND UNABLE TO SHIFT OUT OF GEARS OR TO NEUTRAL WITHOUT DAMAGING THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISK SINCE IT HAPPENS ABRUPTLY AND REMOVES CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE FROM THE DRIVER; DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE FAILURE, THIS CAN ALSO CREATE A PANIC-SITUATION SIMILAR TO BRAKE, STEERING, OR THROTTLE FAILURES SINCE THE CLUTCH IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF CONTROLLING A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE IN ALL SCENARIOS. EVENT: WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC, SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR (AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH) THE CLUTCH PEDAL WOULD NOT RETURN ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS IN 3RD GEAR. I HAD TO STALL THE VEHICLE INTENTIONALLY, THUS AT HIGH SPEED (APPROXIMATELY 10+MPH) AND IN TRAFFIC, THE TIRES OF THE VEHICLE LOCKED-UP AND THE CAR SKIDDED TO A STOP. THIS ALSO IMPARTED DRIVETRAIN AND ENGINE SHOCK DUE TO THE LARGE MECHANICAL FORCES INVOLVED. CONCERNS: IN ALMOST ALL TYPICAL DRIVING SCENARIOS, THIS FAILURE CAN BE DEADLY. IF THIS HAPPENS ON A TWO-LANE HIGHWAY THIS CAN LEAD TO HEAD-ON COLLISIONS. IF IT HAPPENS ON A FREEWAY THAT SEES AN ABRUPT STOP, THIS CAN LEAD TO A MULTI-CAR COLLISION. IF THIS HAPPENS ON A ROAD WITH BENDS OR TURNS THIS CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL SUCH THAT THE VEHICLE MAY BE OFF-ROAD OR OVER GUARDRAILS. WHY NHSTA INVOLVEMENT IS CRITICAL: THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN AND A COMMON FAILURE MODE OF CARS WITH THIS SAME NISSAN TRANSMISSION, AND IT IS CAUSED BY NEGLIGENT DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING PRACTICES BY NISSAN. FAILED CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS PUT TOGETHER BY SMALL TEAMS OF PEOPLE HAVE NOT RESULTED IN REMOVING THIS SAFETY CONCERN FROM THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE FAILURE YET. MY VEHICLE IS A WELL MAINTAINED 2014 NISSAN 370Z WITH LESS THAN 20,000 MILES ON IT, FOR REFERENCE.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-06
  • VIN: JN1AZ4EH6EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AFTER DRIVING MY 2014 NISSAN 370Z FOR 40,000 MILES, THE CLUTCH STUCK TO THE FLOOR. I WAS AT AN INTERSECTION AND FINALLY ABLE TO PULL THE CLUTCH PEDAL UP WITH MY FOOT. AT THE NEXT INTERSECTION, AGAIN THE CLUTCH STAYED DOWN AND AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO PULL IT UP TO SHIFT GEARS. UPON THE THIRD SHIFTING OF GEARS, THE CLUTCH STAYED ON THE FLOOR AND EVEN LIFTING IT WITH MY FOOT, I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET IT INTO ANY GEAR. HAD I BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY SHIFTING GEARS I MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THEREFORE I WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN IN A HAZARDOUS SITUATION FOR BOTH MYSELF AND OTHER DRIVERS.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-22
  • VIN: JN1AZ4EH2EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY CSC - CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER GAVE UP ON ME PUTTING MY CLUTCH PETAL TO THE FLOOR UNABLE TO CHANGE ANY GEARS. I WAS STRANDED ON THE ROAD FOR HOURS. NISSAN MUST FIX THIS ISSUE WITH 370Z WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION THE CSC IS MADE OF PLASTIC AND SHOULD (MUST) BE REPLACED WITH ONE MADE MY METAL. MANY HUNDREDS OF 370Z ENTHUSIAST HAVE THIS ISSUE.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-03-10
  • VIN: JN1AZ4EH9EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2014 NISSAN 370Z BACK ON MAY 9TH 2014. AMAZING CAR WITH ONE REALLY BAD WEAK LINK, CSC. MY CSC (CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER) WENT OUT AT 23,309 MILES. LUCKILY I WAS PARKED RIGHT OUTSIDE MY HOUSE. MY CLUTCH PEDDLE SANK TO THE FLOOR AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE. HAD TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO MY DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM DETERMINE IT "WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY" DUE TO "MISUSE OF THE VEHICLE" FROM A "BURNT" FLYWHEEL. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND HUNDREDS OF 370Z'S WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR CSC. THERE ARE PAGES AND PAGES OF DISCUSSIONS ON FORUMS ABOUT THIS PLASTIC CSC. WE BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY SINCE HUNDREDS OF CONSUMERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND NISSAN DOES NOT WANT TO COVER IT UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY WHEN IN FACT IS A POWER TRAIN ISSUE ON THEIR PART.GREAT CAR, BAD CSC, BAD CUSTOMER SUPPORT BY NISSANS CONSUMER AFFAIRS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-08-19
  • VIN: JN1AZ4EH3EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AT A BUSY INTERSECTION DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC. MANUAL TRANSMISSION SUNNY, AIR TEMP APPROX 75 F. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN APPOX 0.25 MILES & 2 MINUTES IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO EVENT AND PARKED FOR THE PREVIOUS 4 HOURS. DRIVER PARTIALLY ENGAGED THE CLUTCH AND SHIFTED TO 1ST GEAR TO INITIATE FORWARD MOVEMENT OF THE VEHICLE FROM A COMPLETE STOP. AT A SPEED OF APPROX 10MPH THE DRIVER FULLY DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH PEDAL (TO DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH) TO COAST MOMENTARILY WITH TRAFFIC AND SHIFT TO 2ND GEAR. THE DRIVER PARTIALLY RE-ENGAGED THE CLUTCH WITH THROTTLE TO RESUME ACCELERATION WITH TRAFFIC. THE CLUTCH PEDAL FAILED TO RETURN TO THE FULLY ENGAGED, DEFAULT, POSITION DURING OPERATION; THE CLUTCH PEDAL RETURNED ONLY APPROXIMATELY 1/3 OF NOMINAL TRAVEL DISTANCE. CONCURRENTLY, THE CLUTCH DID NOT ENGAGE AND SLIPPED WITH REGULAR THROTTLE APPLIED FOR THE SHIFTING CONDITION. PUMPING OF THE CLUTCH PEDAL DID NOT RESTORE NORMAL CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION NOR NORMAL CLUTCH FUNCTION. FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH TO PROPERLY ENGAGE AND DISENGAGE PREVENTED THE DRIVER FROM FULLY AND SAFELY CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE. DRIVER FORCED TRANSMISSION TO NEUTRAL POSITION, INDICATED TO SURROUNDING TRAFFIC AND COASTED TO SHOULDER ACROSS MULTIPLE LANES. DRIVER NOTED THAT NO APPARENT OBSTRUCTION TO THE MECHANICAL OPERATION OF THE CLUTCH PEDAL WITHIN THE CABIN. DRIVER NOTED AN ODOR, PRESUMABLY FROM OVERHEATED CLUTCH OR HYDRAULIC FLUIDS. SUBSTANTIALLY NORMAL CLUTCH PEDAL AND CLUTCH FUNCTION RETURNED WITHIN SEVERAL MINUTES. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN SEVERAL MILES AND PARKED FOR AN HOUR. NORMAL CLUTCH PEDAL AND CLUTCH FUNCTION WERE NOTED AFTER THIS HOUR. *TR

Negative 2014 Nissan 370z car reviews

  1. Houston Dooley 2025-01-03

I strongly advise against purchasing a Nissan vehicle. Unfortunately, my personal experience with a Nissan car has been quite negative. After only 7,000 miles, the engine suffered complete failure due to a blown head gasket and engine coolant in the combustion chamber. Despite this serious issue, Nissan only replaced the head gasket and not the entire motor. Regrettably, the engine is now showing signs of trouble again, after only 5,000 miles. In addition to this, the car has had other problems, such as a malfunctioning AC, TPMS system, and a manual transmission that sounds terrible. All of these issues have occurred in under 10,000 miles. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend avoiding Nissan vehicles altogether.

Positive 2014 Nissan 370z car reviews

Firstly, the base coupe does not come with a LSD or Synchro-Rev Matching. However, you can easily have an aftermarket one installed for around $1800, which is better than the OEM VLSD from Nissan. The wet traction may not be the best, but on a dry pavement, you can let your Z do the handling. The steering is very responsive and precise, making it feel like threading a needle. Although the ride is somewhat stiff, it's part of owning a sports car. The 370Z is not a rocket car, but it's about as fast as the Porsche Cayman S (Non-Turbo) and has about the same handling, but more weight with the Z (Z has the power & torque to compensate for the weight, though). It's important to note that the front and rear have different tire sizes: Front: 225/18R50 and Rear: 245/18R45. The blind spots can be aggravating, but if you get used to it, it's really not a big deal. You can attach a small convex mirror on both side mirrors to help with this. After 2012, the 370Z came equipped with a small oil cooler (more like a heat exchanger) because the VQ37VHR engine is notorious for running hot. If you live in an area with summer temperatures going up to 3 digits, it's suggested to install an aftermarket oil cooler. It makes a big difference. If you like those vertical LED lights on the front bumper, they were added from the 2013 model. They will turn off when you turn on the bright headlights. Overall, the base coupe is a fun and reliable car to drive. It's the perfect car to work with if you want to build it into a supercar (how the Z was originally designed to do with room for modifications). I gave it a 4-star rating for needing an oil cooler and the steering wheel not being a telescopic type. The steering wheel only goes up and down.My commuter car, a 2004 Nissan Altima 3.5SE base model, has a telescoping steering wheel. Do you know why?

I absolutely love this car! I purchased it used with only 7,000 miles on it and the remainder of the warranty. It's a well-built car that's an absolute blast to drive, and living in NorCal means I get to have the top down almost every day, even in cold weather (thanks to the great seat heat/ventilation). The seats are comfortable, and the controls are so easy to use - it even has knobs! I don't even need to take my eyes off the wheel to manage the climate or stereo. The vents are routed in a way that means there's always hot air blowing through unless the A/C is on, but when it is on, it's dang cold. The car can be a bit noisy, but replacing the OEM tires helped a lot. There's plenty of cargo space for two adults for a long weekend. The only big concern is with the manual transmission version, where there's a repeated failure of the Concentric Slave Cylinder. It's a badly designed part that will always fail, and Nissan's replacement process under warranty is a pain and caused me to be stranded an additional time. As I approach the end of the warranty, I have to wonder if I'll keep it, since the tranny has to be dropped to replace the part ($$!), but there is a better-built aftermarket solution. Check the Z and Infinity G owners forums for more detail. But even with that, this car makes me smile every single day!

I have had many sports cars and this one is definitely the best. I love the handling and the perfect amount of power. It's a shame they don't make the convertible anymore. I will likely keep this one for a long time. It handles great, has perfect acceleration, and hugs the road. It's all the car I need, and it still turns heads.

  4. Gunner Howell 2024-08-11

I bought my 370z (Nismo) brand new in 2012. Although it wasn't cheap, Nissan offered 0% financing, making it relatively affordable. As the title of this review suggests, the car is raw, with few factory options. The only options I remember were the rearview mirror backup camera and illuminated kick plates, but I didn't purchase them as I wasn't a fan of the kick plates and the backup camera in the rearview mirror was too small. It would have been great if the car had navigation so that the backup camera could be projected on the screen, but unfortunately, that wasn't an option for the Nismo Z. However, I believe the more recent Z's have more factory options. I love the design of the Z's interior, with soft touch material throughout the dash and door panels. The design is clean and simple, without the distractions of modern-day vehicles. It reminds me of the simplicity of the design of 90's or early 2000's sports cars, but with better materials. I do wish that one of the gauges on the dash would read something useful to the driver, like air/fuel ratio or water temperature, instead of the time, and that the clock would be integrated with the stereo system. Also, next to the tachometer, I wish they would be consistent with the theme and stick with the analog/needle gauge rather than the dots to show gas level and engine temperature, which seems out of place. Blind spots can be a huge issue at times as the rear/over the shoulder visibility is not great. Gas mileage is decent for a car with over 300HP. The interior is somewhat noisy and reminds me of an airplane ride, which I think is due to the summer performance tires. The steering feel is heavy and precise. The Nismo suspension can be very unforgiving for normal daily driving, especially over uneven pavements (even with the factory-installed shipping spacers removed from the springs!), but it is very rewarding from a performance standpoint. The transmission may take some getting used to, as shifts can feel a bit short and notchy. However, with years of experience driving manual transmissions, including sportier cars like S2000s, Miatas, EVOs, STIs, and my own daily driver, a Mazda Protégé 5, I can say that the Z's 2nd gear may be a bit challenging. But overall, the Z is a great looking car that handles well and has more than enough power to be both safe and fun on the road. As of 9/5/2020, the car is still very reliable and performs like new. While some reviewers may argue that the Z is outdated, it remains one of the few raw sports cars that can provide an affordable and thrilling driving experience. This is definitely a car worth keeping.
