The Mitsubishi Lancer is an automobile produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors since 1973.

The Lancer has been marketed as the Colt Lancer, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel, and Mitsubishi Mirage in various countries at different times, and has been sold as the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis in Japan since 2007. It has also been sold as Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis in Taiwan with a different facelift than the Galant Fortis. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Between its introduction in 1973 and 2008, over six million units were sold. There have been ten generations of Lancers.

Mitsubishi ended production of the Lancer in August 2017 worldwide, with the exception of Taiwan and China. An extensive facelift was given to the car by Pininfarina's Chinese offices.

Common 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer problems

The Mitsubishi Lancer 2011 has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and electrical systems.

  • Automatic Gearbox Problems: Automatic gearbox problems in Mitsubishi Lancers can manifest in various ways, ranging from hesitant gear changes to complete transmission failure. These issues often stem from internal mechanical failures, such as worn-out clutch packs, solenoid malfunctions, or fluid leaks. Symptoms may include rough shifting, delayed engagement, slipping gears, or unusual noises emanating from the transmission. Left unaddressed, automatic gearbox problems can lead to further damage to the transmission system and potentially render the vehicle inoperable. Resolving these issues typically requires professional diagnosis and repair by qualified technicians.
  • Check Engine Light and 'Slow Down' Warning: The check engine light is illuminated, and you see the warning message 'Slow Down'. This problem is related to the engine control unit (ECU) detecting an issue with the vehicle's emissions or drivetrain. It is crucial to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to diagnose and address the underlying problem. Ignoring this warning could lead to more severe issues and potential damage to the vehicle.
  • Rust Issues: Rust issues in Mitsubishi Lancers, particularly in certain models or those imported from regions with different road salt standards, can pose significant concerns for vehicle owners. Rust typically develops on the vehicle's exterior surfaces, particularly on the underside, wheel wells, and around the edges of doors and windows. Left untreated, rust can spread rapidly, compromising the structural integrity of the vehicle and leading to expensive repairs or even safety hazards. To address rust issues effectively, regular inspections of the vehicle's underside are essential, allowing for early detection and treatment of any rust spots. Additionally, preventive measures such as applying rust inhibitors or protective coatings can help mitigate the risk of rust formation.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks in Mitsubishi Lancers can occur due to various reasons, such as worn-out gaskets, damaged seals, or loose connections. Oil leaks can lead to significant engine damage if left unaddressed. Regularly inspect the vehicle for any signs of oil leaks, such as puddles under the car or a decrease in the engine oil level. If an oil leak is detected, it is essential to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by a professional mechanic.
  • Starting Problems: Difficulty starting the engine can be caused by several factors, including a weak battery, a faulty starter motor, or issues with the fuel system. If you experience starting problems, it is crucial to have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic to diagnose and address the underlying problem. Ignoring starting problems can lead to more severe issues and potential damage to the vehicle.
  • Brake Failure: Brake failure in Mitsubishi Lancers can be caused by various factors, including a defective brake booster vacuum check valve, worn-out brake pads, or leaking brake lines. If you experience brake failure, it is crucial to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by a professional mechanic immediately. Brake failure can lead to severe accidents and potential harm to the vehicle's occupants.
  • Steering Pulling: Steering pulling, where the vehicle drifts to one side, may signal suspension or wheel alignment issues. Replace tires from reliable sources and ensure proper wheel alignment by seeking professional assistance to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Slow Fan Speed and Ventilation Loss: Slow fan speed and ventilation loss in Mitsubishi Lancers can indicate underlying issues with the vehicle's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. These problems are commonly attributed to faults in the blower motor or the resistor that controls its speed. When the blower motor malfunctions or the resistor fails, the fan may spin at a reduced speed or stop working altogether, resulting in inadequate airflow and poor ventilation inside the cabin. To address these issues, owners should first check the resistor for signs of damage or failure. If the resistor appears to be functioning correctly, the blower motor may need to be replaced.
  • Air Conditioning Failure: Inadequate cooling may indicate low gas levels in the air conditioning system. Consult experienced technicians to re-gas the system for optimal performance.
  • Seat Failure: Premature wear and foam degradation affect seat comfort and support. Consider replacing seats if foam degradation is extensive, opting for replacements from reputable sources.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-07
  • VIN: Ja32u2fu7bu
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle the headlights will turn off at random intervals. The passenger side rear tail light is out and remains out despite changing the bulb. Water leaks through a gap in the body into the light and the trunk. Headlights need to be reliable in order to ensure safety and visibility, especially at night and during inclement weather. My father is a retired auto mechanic and has been doing his best to troubleshoot the problem. I am experiencing financial hardship at the moment and I cannot afford to bring my vehicle anywhere that would charge. There are no warnings, the lights just stop working periodically and the tail light stopped working about a week ago.

STEERING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-14
  • VIN: JA32U2FU3BU
  • Components: STEERING,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I got a service needed warning for the electric power steering and I lost all power steering... As it turned out, the rack and pinion was bad because the subframe rotted out where the rack and pinion mounts up and a custom built subframe and rack and pinion had to be installed on the car at a cost of almost $5,000...

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000. Consumer called the local dealer back for an estimate, part to be replaced and was given $1150.19. Dealer would get the parts in a week.
2021-08-09

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-07
  • VIN: JA32X8HW8BU
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Routine service at 112 Mitsubishi Dealer/Service Center noted that my front crossbar was severely corroded and “coming apart in chunks”. They noted that this defect is known and was recalled on later model years of my car, but not my 2011. Considering it was recalled already and is the same issue, I would recommend and hope the 2011 model year can also be included in the recall. It is available for inspection through mid September when I expect to repair it. There were no warnings leading up to this discovery of the defect, as it is structural. I am not an expert, but I would expect this advanced corrosion could fully compromise the car structure in a catastrophic way, resulting in an accident and/or injury.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-16
  • VIN: JA32U2FU1BU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: PURCHASED 2011 LANCER IN 2011. IN MARCH 2013 MITSUBISHI ISSUED A TECH SERVICE BULLETIN AND REVISED IT IN JUNE OF 2013. THE ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT COMES ON AND MUST BE TAKEN TO DEALER FOR SERVICE. MITSUBISHI DOES A SIMPLE SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO THE ECM AND RESETS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IS MITSUBISHI IS SIMPLY LETTING THESE VEHICLES GET TO THIS FAILURE POINT AND VEHICLES CAN GO INTO LIMP MODE (MEANING DRIVE NO FASTER THAN 45MPH) RATHER THAN PROACTIVELY AVOIDING THE PROBLEM. FURTHER, THEY ARE KNOWINGLY ALLOWING VEHICLES TO GET PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD WITHOUT REPAIR THUS FORCING CUSTOMERS TO PAY TO HAVE THIS KNOWN ISSUE RESOLVED. TO ADD TO THE PROBLEM IS MITSUBISHI WILL NOT ALLOW NON-MITSUBISHI SERVICE CENTERS, MECHANICS OR REPAIR SHOPS TO UPDATE THE ECM AND I AM FORCED TO TAKE IT TO AN AUTHORIZED MITSUBISHI DEALER FOR FIXING. BECAUSE THESE VEHICLES HAVE HAD OTHER SAFETY RECALLS AND WARRANTY REPAIR WORK, THEY SHOULD HAVE SIMPLY TAKEN 15 MINUTES TO UPGRADED THE ECM SOFTWARE AND RESET AT THE TIME TO AVOID THIS FROM HAPPENING RATHER THAN LETTING THE WARRANTY EXPIRE AND CHARGING ME TO FIX A KNOWN ISSUE.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-12-06
  • VIN: JA32W8FVXBU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER FILLING UP ON GASOLINE, MY 4 YEAR OLD MENTIONED THAT SHE SMELLED GAS IN THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY GOT HOME AND PULLED INTO MY GARAGE AND SMELLED IT, TOO. THEN NEXT MORNING, MY GARAGE WAS OVERWHELMED WITH THE FUMES. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC INSPECT THE CAR, HE FOUND GAS WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE TANK, WHERE THE FUEL PUMP GOES. APPARENTLY, IT WAS COMPLETELY CORRODED, WHICH CAUSED THE PLASTIC FUEL PUMP HOUSING ATTACHED TO IT TO CRACK AND SUBSEQUENTLY LEAK FUEL EVERYWHERE. THIS FUEL PUMP HOUSING IS LOCATED DIRECTLY BENEATH MY SON'S CAR SEAT, ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE BACK SEAT. THIS IS A SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD. AFTER REACHING OUT TO OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE, APPARENTLY THIS CORROSION IS VERY COMMON. BUT MY CAR IS NOT EVEN 6 YEARS OLD, WITH ONLY 48K MILES (PURCHASED IT NEW ON 12/27/2011). THIS SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING ON SUCH A RELATIVELY NEW CAR.
