The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, popularly referred to as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer that was manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All generations use two-litre intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems.
The Lancer was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market the previous year with the Subaru Impreza WRX.
All domestic-market versions, until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005, were limited by a gentlemen's agreement between Japanese car manufacturers to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). However, sources say Mitsubishi had already been producing cars with more power but had been underrating the official power outputs in order to comply with the agreement. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-market Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various special versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 446 PS (328 kW; 440 hp).
The tenth and final generation of the Lancer Evolution, the Evolution X, was launched in Japan in 2007, and overseas markets in 2008. The Evolution X was produced for almost 10 years until Mitsubishi retired the Lancer Evolution in April 2016.

(MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, 2003-2006 Outlander and 2007-2013 Outlander V-6 vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
- Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began January 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-003.

Hi there! I'm the proud owner of a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. This car has been my trusty companion for countless drag strip and track day events, as well as numerous automotive gatherings. And let me tell you, it has never let me down! With over 400hp at the crank, this car is a true powerhouse, and the best part is that it still has its original engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials, and turbo. As long as you change the engine and drivetrain oil, timing belt, and water pump at factory intervals, your Evo will be in great shape. I like to check the spark plugs frequently for wear and tear, but generally, changes should be made between 3000-7000 miles. The interior has held up exceptionally well over the years. I've heard some people complain about the materials, but in my experience, they've stood the test of time. The Recaro front seats are a great balance between track and street, and even after long drives, my back is supported and ache-free. The rear seats are also quite comfortable, with ample legroom. In terms of maintenance, I've only had to replace a few components over the years: the alternator (at 155,000 miles), compressor fan (due to a broken fan blade from ice at 190,000 miles), starter motor (at 194,000 miles), and two front axles (at 200,000 miles). One thing to keep in mind is to check the driver side floor fuse box for signs of corrosion or water. There's a rubber plug on the firewall that can come loose, allowing water to get on the fuse box. But don't worry, it's an easy fix - just glue the plug shut! This happened to me 12 years ago, and we sealed the plug at the dealer - problem solved. Unfortunately, many Evos have been abused, which is where you'll hear about reliability issues. So if you're in the market for one, make sure to find a well-maintained model. Oh, and one more thing - the best gas mileage I ever got on the highway was 27mpg on a trip from Atlanta to Philadelphia. The 4G63 engine has a long history stretching back to the Group B Rally Car, the Mitsubishi Starion, and it's nice to know that the engine has constantly been refined over the years. I've driven BMW M3s, Corvettes, 911 Turbos, and 911 GT3s, and I can honestly say that the Evo is a great value for performance and long-term reliability. Thanks for reading!And I'll probably hang on to the Evo for an indefinite amount of time, even after seventeen years and 200,000 miles.

This car is exactly what most people look for in a vehicle: speed, handling, and comfort. While it may be slightly slower than an STi, there are modifications available to make it more competitive, although the difference is minimal. In my experience, it has been nearly impossible to lose traction on the road, and I have only heard it squeak once in 3200 miles.

When I purchased my EVO, it was a great day! However, I have encountered some problems since then. Unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop six times, and I know others who have had similar experiences. On the other hand, I had the chance to drive the STi, which was much faster and had better handling thanks to its adjustable differentials. In my opinion, the STi also has better quality. If you are looking for a car that doesn't require frequent head gasket replacements, I would recommend considering options other than the EVO.
