2014 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution problems

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, popularly referred to as the 'Evo', is a sports sedan and rally car based on the Lancer that was manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors from 1992 until 2016. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All generations use two-litre intercooled turbo inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive systems.

The Lancer was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market the previous year with the Subaru Impreza WRX.

All domestic-market versions, until the release of the Evolution IX in 2005, were limited by a gentlemen's agreement between Japanese car manufacturers to advertise no more than 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). However, sources say Mitsubishi had already been producing cars with more power but had been underrating the official power outputs in order to comply with the agreement. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-market Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 321 PS (236 kW; 317 hp). Various special versions available in other markets, particularly the UK, have official power outputs up to 446 PS (328 kW; 440 hp).

The tenth and final generation of the Lancer Evolution, the Evolution X, was launched in Japan in 2007, and overseas markets in 2008. The Evolution X was produced for almost 10 years until Mitsubishi retired the Lancer Evolution in April 2016.

THE PUMP NEEDS TO BE RELOCATED AND REPLACED AT MITSUBISHI'S COST. IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE BUYERS THAT WE WERE PAYING FOR A CAR THAT WE HAD TO BUY 1 $1700+ PART AND LABOR. IT SHOULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE IF THE PUMP GOES WHILE DRIVING IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. IN WINTER OF 2018 WAS MY FIRST YEAR IN SNOW WITH IT. ABOUT FEBRUARY WHENEVER THE WEATHER WOULD GET ABOVE 40 DEGREES, THE TARMAC LIGHT WOULD START TO FLASH SIGNALING THE PUMP IS FAILING.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-15
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JA32W8FV6EU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: ON 09/15/2018 AT ROUGHLY 11:30 AM WHILE OPERATING MY 2014 MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION X WITH 32,XXX MILES I EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER, INCREASED EXHAUST NOISE AND THE ILLUMINATION OF POWERTRAIN FAULT LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. AFTER PULLING OFF THE ROADWAY TO INSPECT THE ISSUE A SMALL ENGINE BAY FIRE HAD BEEN FOUND (CHARD PAINT/INSULATION AND A STILL SMOLDERING WIRING HARNESS). AFTER ENSURING THAT THE FIRE WAS OUT AND SAFE THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT IT HAD BEEN PURCHASED FROM (MANGINO MITSUBISHI OF CLIFTON PARK) AND DROPPED OFF. THE CAR IS USELESS IN ITS CURRENT STATE AND HAD TO BE TOW FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO A STORAGE FACILITY WHERE IT HAS BEEN EVER SINCE. BUT I REFUSE TO REPORT THE DAMAGES TO MY INSURANCE BECAUSE I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO COVER DAMAGES CAUSED BY BOLTS THAT WERE INSTALLED IMPROPERLY AT THE FACTORY. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH THE TECHNICIANS AND SERVICE ADVISERS AT THE DEALERSHIP. THEY'VE INFORMED ME THAT A FAILURE LIKE THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN IF THE BOLTS ARE PROPERLY INSTALLED AND THAT THEY DON'T SEE WHY IT WOULDN'T BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT MITSUBISHI IS TRYING TO AVOID BLEMISHING THERE REPUTATION AND IS REFUSING TO ADMIT TO A FAULT THAT CAUSED A FIRE IN A VEHICLE. I DON'T BELIEVE THIS IS AN APPROPRIATE WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS. IT IS UNSAFE AND UNETHICAL AND AM ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE TO RECEIVE THE BENEFITS OF THE WARRANTY THAT I PAID FOR.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-15
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JA32U2FU5EU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: I BOUGHT MY 2014 MITSUBISHI LANCER IN NOV. 2014 AT LONG LEWIS FORD IN FLORENCE, AL, WHERE I RECEIVED ALL REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE PERFORMANCES FOR IT. ON SEPT. 15, 2017, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IN MY 2014 MITSUBISHI LANCER AND EXPERIENCED COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE (WHILE IN MOTION), CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD. ONCE THE SYSTEM FAILED, I COULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE AND COULD ONLY "COAST" TO TRY AND FIND A SAFE SPOT TO BRAKE. WHEN I OPENED THE HOOD, THE MAIN RELAY HAD CAUGHT FIRE, WAS BLACK, BURNT UP, AND MELTED ON THE INSIDE. I COULDN'T GET MY CAR TO GO IN NEUTRAL OR ANY SYSTEMS TO WORK TO GET IT COMPLETELY OFF THE ROAD, CREATING ANOTHER SAFETY HAZARD, AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED. A SALES TECH MET ME WITH A NEW RELAY THAT I PURCHASED. THE NEW RELAY DID NOT GET MY CAR MOVING AGAIN BECAUSE WHEN THE RELAY (THAT WAS IN MY CAR WHEN I BOUGHT IT) CAUGHT FIRE, IT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE COMPUTER/ECM. WHEN GIVING THE PART NUMBERS FROM MY RELAY AND ECM/COMPUTER FOR REPLACEMENTS, THE PARTS SPECIALISTS AND I REALIZED THAT THE PART NUMBERS FOR THE COMPUTER/ECM MATCHED ONLY A 2015 COMPUTER/ECM, AND THERE WAS NOT A MATCHING PART NUMBER FOR THE RELAY AS THAT EXACT ONE WAS UNOBTAINABLE, AND A DIFFERENT ONE THAT WAS COMPATIBLE HAD TO BE PURCHASED. I HAVE RECENTLY LEARNED THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE 2015-2017 MITSUBISHI LANCER RELAYS BECAUSE THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE RELAY WHICH CAUSES COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. I WOULD APPRECIATE AN INVESTIGATION BEING PERFORMED TO SEE IF THE 2014 MITSUBISHI LANCERS SHOULD BE INCLUDED UNDER THIS RECALL AS I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME RELAY ISSUE, SAFETY HAZARD AND CONCERNS, AND ALSO DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY 2014 LANCER HAS A 2015 SYSTEM IN IT. I NEED TO MAKE CERTAIN WHETHER THE RELAY THAT WAS PUT IN MY 2014 LANCER WHEN BUILT, AND WHEN REPLACED, WAS/IS NOT DEFECTIVE. PLEASE ADVISE IF I NEED TO DIRECT THIS SAFETY CONCERN TO ANOTHER APPROPRIATE ADMINISTRATOR.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-17
  • VIN: JA32W8FV2EU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: ON SEPTEMBER 2, 2014, I PURCHASED A 2014 MITSUBISHI LANCER EVOLUTION GSR. ON OCTOBER 17, 2014, WITH A LITTLE OVER 2700 MILES THE SERVICE/MAINTENANCE LIGHT COMES ON AND I DROVE THE CAR TO MITSUBISHI TO HAVE THEM CHECK THE CAR OUT. ON OCTOBER 21, 2014, I RETURNED TO DEALER AND THE CAR WAS IMMEDIATELY WAS DRIVEN INSIDE AND PLACED ON A LIFT TO BE INSPECTED. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT IT WOULD BE A LONGER WAIT THEN EXPECTED DUE TO MITSUBISHI'S HEAD OFFICE BEING LOCATED IN CALIFORNIA, AND TIME ZONE DIFFERENCE. I WAS NOT GIVEN A LOANER CAR, STANDARD PRACTICE ON A BRAND NEW VEHICLE WITH FULL WARRANTY AND HE ( SVR. MANAGER) DID NOT GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION WHILE I WAITED. THE NEXT DAY, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM VIN FROM MITSUBISHI SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHO TOLD ME MITSUBISHI, WANTS TO GET AUTHORIZATION FROM ME TO BREAK DOWN THE CARS ENGINE/TRANSMISSION IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD AND IT WOULD COST ME $1100, IF THEY SAW THAT IT WASN'T A DEFECT ON MITSUBISHI'S PART. I GAVE THE AUTHORIZATION AND WAS CALLED AGAIN BY VIN, WHO ADVISED ME THAT THE CAR HAD A DEFECTIVE SEAL AND THE CAR IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. ON OCTOBER 22, 2014, AT ABOUT APPROX. 4:25PM I RECEIVED A CALL FROM MITSUBISHI SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO GIVE ME A NEW UPDATE ON THE DEFECTIVE PARTS AND REPAIRS. VIN TOLD ME THAT THE CLUTCH & FLY WHEEL HAD BURNED OUT AND THAT MITSUBISHI WAS NO LONGER GOING TO COVER REPAIRS, WHICH HAD NOW REACHED $3,200. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE CAR FROM MITSUBSHI; WE BOUGHT IT WITH 11 MILES ON IT AND IT IS INCONCEIVABLE THAT A BRAND NEW CAR CAN HAVE SUCH DEFECTIVE PROBLEMS. MITSUBISHI IS NOT UPHOLDING THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES AND WE FEEL WE HAVE BEEN SOLD A LEMON. HOW CAN A VEHICLE GO IN FOR AN OIL LEAK AND SUDDENLY HAVE ALL THESE MAJOR ISSUES? OCTOBER 27TH I WAS TOLD BY THE DISTRICT MANAGER OF MITSUBISHI THAT THE CAR WAS NOT GOING TO BE COVERED AND MITSUBISHI TOLD ME TO "DO AS YOU PLEASE." *TR

2014 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution.

2015-08-31
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Lancer Evolution vehicles manufactured January 31, 2014, to September 5, 2014, and 2014-2015 Lancer Ralliart vehicles manufactured February 3, 2014, to September 5, 2014. The affected turbocharged vehicles have a right parking brake cable that may contact the fuel tank, wearing away the tank's protective coating.
  • Consequence: Without the protective coating, the fuel tank may rust and leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the right parking brake cable, and inspect the fuel tank, free of charge. If the fuel tank's exterior coating shows signs of damage from abrasive contact with the right parking brake cable, the fuel tank will also be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on October 13, 2015. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-15-009.
2014-05-27
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2014 Lancer Evolution vehicles manufactured January 31, 2014, through February 21, 2014, and 2014 Lancer Ralliart vehicles manufactured February 3, 2014, through February 14, 2014. The affected vehicles may have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the crossmember brace.
  • Consequence: Due to abrasion and rust, a hole may develop in the power steering tube, allowing the fluid to leak out, resulting in added steering effort, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the leaking fluid increases the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source such as a hot engine or exhaust component.
  • Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the power steering tube for sufficient clearance. If the vehicle has insufficient clearance, the power steering tube assembly will be replaced, free of charge. The manufacturer notified owners in July 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-004.

Negative 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution car reviews

  1. Cedrick Grimes 2024-11-15

I upgraded from a 2008 STi to the 2010 EVO X. Although the STi had a more pleasant interior, the seats in the X are amazing. I highly recommend the SSS package, as it is well worth it. However, the overall build quality of the X is not as good as the STi, and there is a lack of space. The buttons feel cheaper and the seating position is not great, despite the amazing seats. Both cars are great options, but if you want something similar to the X, you should consider buying a 2011 STi, as the 08-2010 models don't compare. The paint quality of the X seems to be better than the Subaru, and there is less turbo lag, even though the motor is 0.5L smaller. One of the biggest differences is fuel economy, as the 5-speed is too short and gets 8mpg less than the STi did.

  2. Antone Greenholt 2024-11-15

These cars are good and fun to drive, with great handling, good power, and a top-notch AWD system. While the interior is just okay and the comfort is not great, it's important to remember that this car is not meant to be a cruiser. In my opinion, the premium over the GSR's is not worth it, but if you have the budget, it's definitely a great option. If you're willing to wait, you may be able to snag a better deal in the future. Overall, it's a great car for those who prioritize performance and excitement.

  3. Elwin Moore 2024-10-26

Upon driving the car out of the dealer lot, I was blown away by the sheer power and torque of this beast. While the seats are supportive, adjusting them when reclining can be quite challenging. However, the transmission, while slightly notchy, is still superior to that of a Honda. Although the interior plastic parts are not up to par with my 06 Civic, this is a minor issue compared to the overall performance of the car. As someone who has previously owned a 2003 WRX, I can confidently say that the GSR's transmission is not a significant concern for me.

  4. Nasir Adams 2024-09-26

We have owned our 2008 EVO for four months now and were initially very excited about our purchase. However, after waxing the vehicle for the fourth time 1 1/2 weeks ago, my husband noticed a massive amount of paint chips above the rear tires on both sides of the car and also on the hood. After researching online, we found that many other people have experienced the same issue, and unfortunately, Mitsubishi has not been very helpful in resolving the problem for most of them. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, we would advise against it due to the paint chipping and windshield issues that seem to be common. We have had a disappointing experience with the quality of this car and regret our purchase.

  5. Tad Grimes 2024-08-04

The car's highway mileage is really affected by the lack of an overdrive gear, which causes the engine to rev between 3500-4000rpms. Additionally, the car tends to bog down below 3k rpms and still has some turbo lag between 3-5k rpms. Above 5500 rpm, the car starts to fall flat, and the redline might as well be 5500 rpm. However, the car handles great, and you can safely test its limits at the track. If you're not planning to track the car, it might not be the best choice for you.

Positive 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer evolution car reviews

  1. Quentin Goyette 2025-01-09

This car is amazing to drive! It handles excellently and, with tuning, can put out an exceptional 400hp. Although drifting with this vehicle is harder due to its All Wheel Drive, it is still a very fun car. In comparison, the new 2008 Mustang GT puts out 300hp and is 1 1/2 times heavier. However, this car will smoke all the other cars for the same price. It's great on gas and has great reliability. The Subaru WRX STI is also a great car, although the latest models of this car are hatchbacks which may not be preferred and do not handle as well.

I've owned three Evo's, and I must say, this one is the most daily driver friendly yet. Although the 5-speed can be a bit notchy when cold, the car performs well overall. The handling is truly the best thing about the car. The steering is telepathic, and the brakes are excellent. The power is fair, but the second factory reflash helped smooth things out and improved the upper RPM range. I did have to fix a rattle in the glovebox, but other than that, the interior is quiet. While tire noise can be high, the upgraded satellite radio/audio system is superb. If you're looking to solve any power issues, aftermarket parts and tuning are available and can be done quickly and easily.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new EVO X. I've been driving it for the past two weeks and it has been an absolute blast! I love everything about it - from the sleek looks to the amazing handling and power. It definitely turns heads on the road! Some people may just see a Lancer, but those who truly know cars can appreciate what a great driving experience it provides. I've owned a variety of cars in the past, from BMWs to RX8s, and everything in between. I was considering several other options before choosing the EVO X, including the RX8 R3, 350Z, G37, MB, and BMW. But for the price and the amount of driving fun it provides, I think it's a great value. Plus, it seats five, so I can take my family out for a drive every once in a while. I haven't pushed it too hard yet due to its low mileage (I got it with only 50 miles!), but I can't wait to hit 1,000 miles. The interior is decent, although I'm not a huge fan of the cloth armrest. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the EVO X to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car. Thanks for reading!

After 1yr, I'm still very happy with my purchase. It's easily better than the more expensive STi. It did great through the winter and always gets looks. Plus, it continues to be fun to drive!

I'm so excited to share that my husband and I decided to switch from his Mustang Saleen to an import, and we couldn't be happier with our choice! The EVO handles like a dream and we were torn between the Subaru WRX STI and the Evo, but after test driving both, the Evo was the clear winner. While the Subaru felt a bit 'lost' with its six-speed, the Evo's performance was top-notch. We did notice that the car could benefit from a sixth gear, but overall we are extremely satisfied with our first Mitsubishi. We haven't had the chance to really push it yet, as it only has 200 miles, but we are already impressed with its performance. We definitely made the right choice!
