2014 Audi A6 problems
The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.
All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.
Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2014 Audi A6 problems
The Audi A6 is a popular executive car known for its comfort and ride quality, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2014 Audi A6:
- Gearbox Problems: The Audi A6's CVT, automatic, or multitronic gearbox may exhibit hesitant or clunky behavior when driving around town. This issue is often caused by a software problem that affects rapid gear shifting. In high mileage cars, the gearbox may need a full replacement.
- Excessive Oil Usage: The Audi A6 is known to consume more oil than expected. It's crucial to regularly check the oil level using the dipstick and ensure it's well above the halfway mark to keep the engine well lubricated.
- Dual Mass Flywheel Vibration: If you hear excessive vibration from the engine when increasing throttle in neutral, there might be a problem with the dual mass flywheel. This issue can be expensive to fix, as the dual mass flywheel is a costly part to replace.
- Air Con Smells: Approximately 25% of Audi A6s suffer from issues with the air conditioning system. These problems can manifest as a very cold icy blast or a musty or damp smell. It's essential to test the system thoroughly before purchasing a second-hand vehicle.
- Faulty Electrics: Electrical issues are common in the Audi A6, with particular problems occurring with the regulators in the electric window units. It's advisable to check all in-car systems to ensure there are no wiring issues.
- Rear Wheel Arch Rubbing: If you're considering purchasing an S-line Audi A6, be sure to check the car under load. There's a possibility that the tyres may chafe against the wheel arches when the car is fully loaded, which could cause damage to the expensive tyres.
- Timing Chain Tensioner Failures: Audi A6s with V6 and V8 engines use a complex system of chains to keep the 4 valves per cylinder in time. These chains have plastic guides linking to the hydraulic pistons, which have been known to fail, causing misfiring and stalling in the engine. If not caught early, this issue could lead to the need for a complete new engine.
- Potential Airbag Failure: A small number of early A6s have been recalled due to a curtain airbag failure, where the airbags on the sides of the car fail to inflate properly due to a gas leak in the vehicle.
- Parking Brake Leaks: Audi A6s built between 2012 and August 2014 may be leaking oil into the brake system, which could cause problems when parking the vehicle. It's essential to ensure you're achieving the correct stopping distances while driving.
- Exhaust Muffler, Pipes, Catalytic Converter, Exhaust Manifold, Heat Shields, Leaks: Some 2014 Audi A6 owners have reported issues with the exhaust system, including leaks and failures in various components.
- Cooling System Failures: Audi A6 owners have reported problems with the cooling system, including thermostat issues and cooling fans failing, which can lead to overheating.
- Lack of Power: Some Audi A6 owners have reported a lack of power, which could be caused by various issues, including engine problems or transmission issues.
- Wheel Bearing and Stabilizer Repair: Some Audi A6 owners have reported the need for wheel bearing and stabilizer repairs.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-26
- VIN: WAUGFAFCXEN
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My car was manufactured with defective pistons. The pistons are resulting in reduced oil pressure in my engine, which can result in a sudden loss of power. I had my engine inspected, and the attached photographs depict that the original pistons that shipped with my car caused scoring to the cylinder walls which is causing metal pieces to collect in my engine. In addition, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. acknowledged that the pistons need to be repaired in my car, and quoted the repair using an updated design, so they are aware of the issue and have knowledge of it. While the defect existed during the warranty period, VWGoA refuses to repair or replace my defective engine under warranty.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-21
- VIN: WAUHGBFC0EN
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The electronic steering system on my Audi A6 failed without warning, locking my steering wheel in place. A review of on line message boards for Audi owners indicates this is a systemic problem, and has, for some owners, actually locked their steering while driving. This did not happen to me, but prior to locking, my car instantly transitioned from steering with no issues to almost becoming undrivable before I could get to a repair shop.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-12
- VIN: Waugfafcxen
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: I have recently purchased my 2014 Audi A6 in Honolulu at JN Autogroup. After just a couple days of driving the vehicle I have noticed that the car started to smell like gas in and out of the vehicle. The smell is very potent and very sensible throughout every second of driving and I am reporting this because this could be very hazardous and I may not know if it could catch on fire with the amount of fumes that is lingering around. To the point where as I am driving it is making me dizzy. I have researched about issues for these cars with the same year, make and model and I have read that there was a recall on the fuel line leak but i don’t know why my car wasn’t included in this recall base of the data I have pulled up on the Audi recall center. I’m not sure if it has been recalled but the problem for sure wasn’t solved with my vehicle. On the other hand, I have also noticed that the reverse camera on this vehicle goes for a split second on the dash whenever in reverse then suddenly blacks out the entire screen. I am thinking that the wiring or some kind of harness that operates the reverse camera is not done properly by the factory that causes malfunctions within the system. In conclusion, these are two of the reasons why I am completing this incident report because I feel that these are two hazardous features that is important for not just myself but the community and people that surrounds me whenever I am on the road behind the wheel. It is important for this to be resolved because the company of this vehicle advertises all these features and sells this product but there is an issue with the product and I want it to be looked upon and not swept under the rug because I am not only speaking for myself but for the many thousands and thousands of these car owners that is on the road today who are having the same issue as I do. I’d appreciate your service if this can be fixed, thank you!
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-21
- VIN: wauhgafc7en
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Audi sent a notice in June 2021 regarding the issuance of a limited extended warranty coverage for Electromechanical Steering Unit for certain 2011-2016 model year A4, A4 Allroad, A5, S5, RS5, Q5, SQ5, A6, S6, A7, RS7, A8, and S8 vehicles. The letter stated that "Audi has determined that it is possible for the Electromechanical steering unit to malfunction in some vehicles, causing the electromechanical steering warning lamp in the instrument cluster to illuminate due to the presence of specific fault codes resulting from this malfunction." The letter provided consumers with repairs under warranty, but was unclear about requiring the repairs to be completed at an Audi authorized facility. The letter implies that the issue is the illumination of the warning lamp on the instrument panel, but fails to warn consumers of the actual impact to the usability of the vehicle when the fault is triggered. I experienced first hand that the illumination of the light renders the car inoperable as the power steering mechanism no longer works and the vehicle is nearly impossible to steer and control. The warning also directs the driver to drive to the nearest Audi repair center, which is not feasible given the difficulties to steer. The nearest facility was also 15 miles away. After attempting to drive home, the instrument panel warned me to stop driving the car. In less than 1/2 mile the instruction on the panel went from drive to nearest facility to stop driving. The warning for this fault and subsequent loss of steering happens instantaneously. The driver is unable to do much, but to safely pull over into an area that the car can be towed from. Moreover, I repaired the vehicle at a local dealership and Audi refuses to reimburse me as their forms lead me to believe it would be. Audi should have issued a recall to correct a problem that they were aware poses a significant safety concern instead of extended warranty with stipulations carved out. Please help me make this right.

You've got yourself a solid performer here! While it may not be overwhelmingly fast, it's definitely plenty quick and has gobs of low end torque. Plus, with 40MPG on the highway in an executive sedan, you can't go wrong. It's worth noting that the tachometer reads 2,000 RPM at 90 MPH, so the motor isn't working hard at normal highway speeds.
-
Sorry to hear about your poor experience with the dealer. On the bright side, the A6 is a reliable car.
-
You'll love the quick and comfortable handling of this car, and it feels great behind the wheel. The 2.0 engine packs plenty of punch, making it a great ride and road car. Plus, it's really fun to drive! People are always complimenting me on its looks, and overall it's the best car I've ever had.
-
Hello! Thank you for your message. Regarding the text above, I would like to kindly ask for more context or information to better understand the situation. Looking forward to hearing back from you soon!

I recently switched from MBenz and had a great experience with this car. However, just after the warranty expired at 57k miles, the MMI stopped working and the repair cost was $3500. I was disappointed as I expected a top-of-the-line Audi worth $62k to be fully functional until at least 58k miles. This experience has made me lose confidence in Audi and I am considering other brands for my next car.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my A6 Prestige 3.0 that I bought back in May 2014. I opted for the Cold Weather Package, LED lights, and the 19-inch Sport Package, among other things. After driving it for 6 months, I can say that it's a comfortable and quiet ride that delivers enough power with its twin-turbo engine. However, I wouldn't necessarily classify it as a 'sport sedan'. It has a tendency to understeer and the Dynamic Driving mode doesn't seem to help with suspension stiffness. The power comes in around 3K RPM when the turbo kicks in. As for the interior, I'd give it a solid B. It has some great features like 4-zone climate control, ventilated seats, and shades, but unfortunately, these are all options that come at an additional cost. I do wish that the door trim was made of leather instead of plastic, and the MMI system could use some improvement. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others. Let me know if you have any questions!
