Mercury Tracer problems
The Mercury Tracer is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Ford's Mercury division for model years 1987 through 1999, over three generations in three- and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations.
The first generation was marketed as a subcompact; the two succeeding generations were sold in the compact segment. All three generations derived from the Mazda 323/Protegé.
After 1999, Mercury ended sales of the Tracer; while the Ford Escort was later replaced by the Ford Focus, Mercury exited the compact segment. A planned Tracer fourth generation was projected for 2012, cancelled by the closure of the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

Mercury Tracer 1992
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-15
- Date Complaint: 2020-06-22
- VIN: 3MAPM10J8NR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: AFTER 27 YEARS THE RUBBER FUEL FILLER PIPE ON THE CAR CRACKED AND BEGAN LEAKING FUEL. THE FUEL FILLER PIPE WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW FUEL FILLER PIPE FROM FORD MOTORCRAFT, PART #KFL-22, FOCZ-9324-AA. THE NEW FUEL FILLER PIPE LASTED ONLY 6 MONTHS BEFORE CRACKING AND SPILLING GAS ON MY DRIVEWAY CREATING A HAZARDOUS SITUATION. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED WITH A NEW THIRD PARTY [NOT FORD] FUEL FILLER PIPE. I'M BRINGING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION BECAUSE NUMEROUS AUTO REPAIR WEB SITES HAVE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING DEFECTIVE REPLACEMENT FORD FUEL FILLER PIPES [ALL FORD MODELS]. FUEL FILLER PIPES SHOULD LAST MORE THEN 6 MONTHS. FORD'S REPLACEMENT FUEL FILLER PIPES ARE DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR REPLACEMENT BY FORD TO PREVENT A VERY HAZARDOUS SITUATION SHOULD A VEHICLE BE PARKED IN A GARAGE, I.E., NEAR A WATER HEATER OR OTHER IGNITION SOURCE, CREATING A LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION. THE LEAK FROM THE FUEL FILLER PIPE OCCURS WHETHER OR NOT THE VEHICLE IS PARKED OR MOVING WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS MORE THEN 3/4'S FULL. THE PIPE DETERIORATES FROM THE OUTSIDE WITH CRACKS RUNNING THE LENGTH OF THE PIPE. THE NYLON WEBBING ON THE INSIDE OF THE PIPE DOES NOT PREVENT IT FROM LEAKING. THE ATTACHED PHOTO SHOWS THE DEFECTIVE PIPE, BUT THE HUNDREDS OF HAIRLINE CRACKS IN THE PIPE CANNOT BE SEEN IN THE PHOTO BECAUSE OF PHOTO RESOLUTION. THE PIPE HAS ONLY BEEN IN USE ON THE CAR FOR JUST SIX MONTHS. I USE 91 OCTANE GASOLINE IN THE CAR. *TR

- Date Complaint: 2017-08-13
- VIN: 3MABM1354KR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THERE IS A STALLING PROBLEM, EVEN WHEN DRIVING! THE WERE A NUMBER OF TIMES THAT I HAD TO BE PUSHED OF A MAIN ROAD. IT TOOK HOURS TO RESTART. IF I WAIT OVER 10 HOURS, MOST TIMES THE CAR WILL RESTART. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE IN THE IGNITION MODULE AND /OR THE MAGNET AND/OR THE ROTOR. I HAVE SPENT NEARLY $2,300.00 REPLACING PARTS. THE CAR STILL STALLS OUT EVEN WHEN DRIVING! IT IS POSSIBLE THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE DISTRIBUTOR OR THE IGNITION MODULE. THE CONTACTS TO THE RELAY IN THE FUSE BOX WERE CLEANED BUT IT STILL STALLS RANDOMLY. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A RECALL WITH THE IGNITION MODULE, ROTOR AND MAGNET SET. IS THAT TRUE?

- Date Of Incident: 2012-09-28
- Date Complaint: 2013-03-20
- VIN: 1MEFM13P4XW
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: THE TRUNK REFLECTOR PLASTIC PEGS BROKE AND I'VE SEEN THIS ON OTHER TRACERS AS WELL. WE ARE UNABLE TO FIND ANOTHER. IF WE WERE TO GO TO A USED CAR PARTS LOT, MOST LIKELY, THEY WOULD BREAK BEFORE WE COULD POP ONE OFF. WE ARE FORCED TO USE TAPE TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP SAID THAT PART COULDN'T BE ORDERED ANYMORE. YES, THIS IS AN OLD CAR, BUT STILL, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY WITHOUT OUR TRUNK REFLECTOR BLOWING OFF AND CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE DRIVER REAR TAIL LIGHT IS DOING THE SAME THING TOO. THE LIGHT WORKS, BUT THE PLASTIC FITTINGS BREAK AND THE LIGHT COULD BLOW OFF AS WELL--BUT IT IS MOSTLY INTACT AT THIS TIME AND I'M PRETTY SURE I CAN BUY ANOTHER, HOWEVER, AT THIS TIME OUR TAPE DOES RUN FROM MOST OF THE REFLECTOR TO THE LIGHT AS WELL. I JUST THINK THEY SHOULD MAKE A TRUNK REFLECTOR THAT DOESN'T BLOW OFF. I DON'T CARE HOW OLD THE CAR IS. *TR

Vehicle year: 1994
Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought the LTS model with the 1.8 liter engine brand new back in 1992 and it has been amazing! I've only had to perform normal vehicle maintenance like changing the oil, battery, and tires, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. Even after all these years, it's still running great with only 93,000 miles on it. I've owned at least ten other cars of many makes and models, but this one is definitely the best of them all!

Just bought it less than a year ago, and there have been no problems. My friend that I bought it from owned it much longer and it didn't give him any trouble either! It's definitely fast and fun to drive, with good compression even after 120K! Have a great day!

Vehicle year: 1993
The '93 LTS was my very first car and I got an amazing deal for under five grand. It was in fantastic condition, with power locks, windows, mirrors, sunroof, alloys, a spoiler, and a five-speed transmission. I drove it for a month before the transmission failed, but a neighbor helped me fix it by rebuilding the transmission. After that, the car ran flawlessly for 15,000 miles until I decided to replace it with a '99 Olds Alero in October 2002. Unfortunately, I had to sell it the following year and it was later wrecked and destroyed by an irresponsible driver. It was such a shame because the car was in great shape and it was so much fun to drive, especially on mountain roads.

I don't understand why some people tend to underestimate American models when compared to foreign ones. This car is quite zippy for a 110hp engine and has given me no problems other than routine maintenance. The parts are also very affordable. I bought it at 35k and now at 80k, it's still solid as a rock - a perfect car for a road trip. If you have a kid going to college, this would make a great graduation gift.

This vehicle requires frequent maintenance, which can add up over time. It even needed a new engine at 72,000 miles. To avoid unexpected expenses, I would suggest considering an extended warranty.

If you're considering purchasing a Merc that is more than 3 years old, I would advise against it. While I had no problems for the first few years, my car eventually started to experience issues after about 5 years of regular usage and maintenance. Although the Tracer is affordable, I had to replace a timing belt and the airbag partially detonated, causing an embarrassing squeak on long turns. However, if you're on a tight budget, the Tracer may still be a viable option for you. That being said, if you have other options available, it may be worth investing in a higher quality car to get the most value for your money.

I purchased my tracer in 1997, and unfortunately, I had problems with it almost immediately. The biggest issue I've had was with the transmission, which required a replacement. It ended up being very expensive, even though my Dad was able to do most of the work himself. While I wouldn't recommend this car to a friend, I hope my experience can help others make an informed decision.

Vehicle year: 1996
I purchased my Tracer in 1995 and always took it to the dealership for servicing. Unfortunately, they made some mistakes with my brakes and transmission. Despite informing them of transmission issues while the car was under warranty, they told me nothing was wrong with it for two years. Just a week before they informed me that I would have to pay $3000 to replace the transmission, they still claimed that nothing was wrong with it. Eventually, I took it to a mechanic who rebuilt it for $1500. Even though I had informed FordMercury about the transmission problems while the car was under warranty, they refused to help pay for the repairs. Additionally, I had an alternator break at around 50k miles. Despite these issues, I would say that the car's biggest problem has been its manufacturer, FordMercury.
Soledad Runte 2024-09-10
Vehicle year: 1998
The Tracer has one issue that seems to persist, which is heavy vibration when stopped at a light in drive. However, most auto mechanics say that it's just the nature of the beast! Changing out the motor mount helps a little, but overall, it's not too bad for a little runabout. Although the vibration is bad, it has excellent gas mileage and handles well. If you're tall, getting in and out of it can be a bit of a challenge. Remember to test drive it with the A/C on and see if the vibration changes your mind about buying it.
