The Mercury Tracer is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Ford's Mercury division for model years 1987 through 1999, over three generations in three- and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations.
The first generation was marketed as a subcompact; the two succeeding generations were sold in the compact segment. All three generations derived from the Mazda 323/Protegé.
After 1999, Mercury ended sales of the Tracer; while the Ford Escort was later replaced by the Ford Focus, Mercury exited the compact segment. A planned Tracer fourth generation was projected for 2012, cancelled by the closure of the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

THE RECALL SAID THE CARS WHERE BUILT AT HERMOSILLO OR WAYNE ASSEMBLY PLANTS. MY CARS WAS BUILT IN HERMOSILLO. ISN'T IT FUNNY THAT MY CAR HAS ALL OF THE SAME PROBLEMS AS WITH THE 1995 BUILT CARS, BUT BECAUSE OF THE BUILD DATE IT DOES NOT MEET THE RECALL. AS I AM BEING TOLD BY 12 FORD DEALERS IN THE LOUISIANA/ MISSISSIPPI AREA. ANY AND ALL INFORMATION AS TO WHY MY CAR IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS VERY HAZARDOUS RECALL. CAR IS UNSTABLE, HAS A TENDENCY TO PULL TO THE RIGHT WITHOUT WARNING WHICH CAUSED BRIEF LOSS OF CONTROL IN APRIL 1999. NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES SUFFERED. HIT A POT HOLE WITH VEHICLE IN APPROX JAN 98, HAD VEHICLE CHECKED AND NO DAMAGE WAS FOUND TO THE SUSPENSION. SPEED AT THE TIME WAS LESS THAN 10 MPH. HAD VEHICLE AGAIN CHECKED BY THE MERCURY DEALER ON 18 SEPT 00, AND VEHICLE WAS DETERMINED TO HAVE A CRACKED COIL ON THE RIGHT REAR SPRING. STRUTS WERE REPLACE IN LATE 1998 TO EARLY 1999 AND THE RIGHT FRONT AND REAR SPRING WERE INSPECTED AT THAT TIME AND WERE DETERMINED TO BE IN NORMAL RANGE, NO DAMAGE WAS NOTED. STILL HAVING DIFFICULTIES WITH VEHICLE AS OF THIS COMPLAINT, VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE ON ROAD IN CURRENT CONDITION. WOULD LIKE YOUR AGENCY TO INSPECT VEHICLE AS I HAVE REPORTED TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY ON 18 SEPT WITH NO ANSWER AS TO WHY AFTER REPLACING TIRES AM I HAVING TO REPLACE ALL SUSPENSION PARTS. AFTER LOOKING THROUGH OTHER CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE THERE ARE SOME OTHER SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE SUSPENSION. I WENT TO THE LOCAL GAS STATION TO HAVE THE BULB REPLACED ONLY TO FIND THAT DUE TO TORRENTIAL RAINS, SOME WATER HAD SEEPED INTO THE CRACK AND THE BULB HAD BLOWN. REPLACED BULB AND WITHIN TWO DAYS THE BULB WAS OUT AGAIN. I ONLY NOTICED THIS BECAUSE WHEN I GOT INTO MY VEHICLE TO RUN TO THE STORE, MY GEAR SHIFT WAS STUCK. I READ THE MAINTENANCE MANUAL THAT CAME WITH MY TRACER AND USED THE SHIFT OVERRIDE BUTTON. I THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE GARAGE AND ORDERED A REAR LIGHT UNIT. THIS UNIT WAS REPLACED LAST FRIDAY AUGUST 25, 2000 AND ON MONDAY, AUGUST 28, WHEN GOING OUT ON MY LUNH HOUR I FOUND THAT THE SHIFT WAS AGAIN STUCK, I PULLED THE FUSE AND, OF COURSE, THE FUSE WAS BLOWN. THAT EVENING I TOOK THE CAR TO THE GARAGE SINCE I THEN NOTICED THAT I NOT ONLY HAD A GEAR SHIFT THAT WAS STUCK, NO REAR LIGHTS, NO INTERIOR PANEL LIGHTS AND NO LIGHTS ON THE SHIFT PANEL. IF I HADN'T LEFT WORK LATE, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED BY ANOTHER CAR SINCE I HAD NO BRAKE LIGHTS. I HAD DIFFICULTING GETTING THE CAR INTO GEAR IN THE DARK PARKING GARAGE WITHOUT THE GEAR SHIFT LIGHTS. THIS PROBLEM HAS MADE ME VERY UNEASY DRIVING THIS VEHICLE AROUND AND I'M QUITE CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING MY CHILDREN ANY WHERE IN THIS CAR. HAS THIS HAPPENED TO OTHER MERCURY TRACERS??? - Summary: THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG MODULE CAN HAVE AN INADEQUATELY WELDED INFLATOR CANISTER.
- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION, THE WELD SEAM CAN SEPARATE, CAUSING THE AIR BAG TO FAIL TO DEPLOY PROPERLY AND HOT GASES TO BE EXPELLED FROM THE BACK OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS CAN RESULT IN AN INCREASED RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY FROM THE HOT GASES AND THE AIR BAG FAILURE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW AIR BAG MODULE.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought the LTS model with the 1.8 liter engine brand new back in 1992 and it has been amazing! I've only had to perform normal vehicle maintenance like changing the oil, battery, and tires, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. Even after all these years, it's still running great with only 93,000 miles on it. I've owned at least ten other cars of many makes and models, but this one is definitely the best of them all!

Just bought it less than a year ago, and there have been no problems. My friend that I bought it from owned it much longer and it didn't give him any trouble either! It's definitely fast and fun to drive, with good compression even after 120K! Have a great day!

When I was 18, my dad gave me my first Mercury Tracer LTS. It was previously my uncle's, and he was the only other owner in the car's history. The 1.8L engine was amazing, and the car's body styling was fantastic. Unfortunately, the transmission wasn't up to the car's high standards, and it eventually died. The cost of repairing it was worth more than the car itself, so I decided to donate it to charity and purchase another Tracer LTS with only 58,000 miles on it. I had a transmission flush, and I'm keeping a close eye on it. If I had the chance or the money, I would buy the remaining LTS's for myself. Needless to say, I absolutely love these cars!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased this car brand new back in 1992 and it has been a great ride so far. It has 95,000 miles on it and I've only had a few minor issues with it. Unfortunately, it seems to be having some transmission problems now. When it's cold, it hesitates a bit and my mechanic has suggested that the transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Despite this, I still think it's a great car and it's always been a lot of fun to drive!

I bought this car new and after 10 years and 90k miles, it still runs great! The car was in storage for 4 years and all I had to do was replace the battery. I have had no major problems with the car, and I drive it a minimum of 50 miles a day. I did have one minor issue with the accelerator sticking, but Ford fixed it easily. Overall, I find this car to be very reliable and fun to drive! I would definitely recommend this vehicle!

Economical car that drives and corners well. It has a fast pick up and a good turn radius. The sporty design for a sedan is a nice touch. Although some parts wore out sooner than expected for the amount of wear and tear on the engine, the interior is comfortable. It is a great value for all the extra features, including cruise control, automatic windows and locks, sunroof, and air conditioning.
