The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.

The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.

The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.

The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.

A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.

The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

Common 2011 Mazda Mazda3 problems

The 2011 Mazda Mazda3 is a compact car that has been praised for its benchmark handling, energetic 2.5-liter engine, stylish and well-equipped interior, impressive list of luxury options, and hatchback utility. However, like any vehicle, it has some common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most significant issues with the 2011 Mazda3 is the transmission. Some owners have reported that the reverse gear has been temperamental, sometimes requiring multiple attempts to engage it. In some cases, the reverse gear has disappeared altogether, making the car undrivable. This issue has been reported by multiple owners, and there is no recall or fix from the factory to solve the problem. Mazda has offered brief workarounds to make it go in reverse, but the issue has not been resolved.

Another common problem with the 2011 Mazda3 is the clutch. Many drivers have reported that the clutch gave out in their cars, making them undrivable until it was replaced. This issue was particularly prevalent in the 2010 model, but it has also been reported in the 2011 model. The average report of this problem was after only 40,000 miles, which is a significant concern for potential buyers.

The interior of the 2011 Mazda3 has also been a source of complaints. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system dying, which is not the most expensive fix in a car but can be a significant inconvenience.

In addition to these specific issues, some owners have reported that the ride may be too firm for some and that the controls can be complicated to use. The 2011 Mazda3 is not without its share of reliability woes, and potential buyers should be aware of these common problems before making a purchase.

SEATS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-13
  • VIN: JM1BL1K56B1
  • Components: SEATS,ENGINE
  • Summary: Defective Driver's seat construction made by Mazda Mfg Corp. I was the first person to report this cheaply made driver's seat failure to Mazda Corp in Irvine, CA in early 2015 or 2016. Recall was finally issued a year afterwards because Mazda dragged their feet, and only after I threatened to sue them if I was ever in an accident, and the seat was to totally fall apart, and maim me for life did they finally take action. The Recall fix (cheap bandaid clamp that again failed because seat frame welds had failed as well) was never done right, and as a result the seat totally fell apart, and Ed Howard Lincoln Mazda of Sarasota, FL didn't want to do anything further at that point (cost out of pocket wise). I was told by a different Mazda Dealership in Ft Myers, FL that that defective seat should have been totally replaced if they would've handled it correctly. So Ed Howard Lincoln Mazda really screwed me on that one! As related to the 2.5L Mazda engine, I also had/have a engine failure part there as well. It's called the ENGINE COOLANT (WATER) OUTLET FLANGE, and the bottom left hand bolt (1 of 4 bolts total) that's suppose to hold this cheap plastic part in place was stripped (over-torqued) at the production assembly line time that the engine was made (put together). Now the cheap plastic replacement part is leaking again from the same lower left hand corner, and this is a well Known Ford & Mazda 2.5L engine failure design as stated in many a Mazda online forum! This also should have been recalled, as now my 2011 Mazda 3 is down again. Engine overheated again on Oct 13, 2023. Prior repair to replace this defective Flange was done in Feb or Mar of 2022. Cheap Plastic parts put on a Metal engine just don't work well at all. Common Physics would tell you that! I have documents in my storage unit if you need them.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-18
  • VIN: JM1BL1UG2B1
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: My seat lifter broke causing the driver's seat to rock back and forth. I brought my vehicle to my local dealer on 05/18/2022 to have an outstanding NHTSA recall 17V-082 performed to repair the issue. I was informed that the necessary part to repair the seat was on backorder and there was no ETA, but that I would be contacted when a part was available. Over the following nine months, I periodically followed up to see if they had received the part, culminating with being told by the dealer on 03/02/2023 that the part order was canceled and flagged as no longer available and that I needed to contact Mazda directly. I then called Mazda, who told me that the part was indeed marked as retired and advised that I seek an aftermarket replacement, of which none is available. They did check in my local area and found only one remaining part in a dealer's inventory, which I'll be driving to on 03/11/2023 to have the repair done. There has been no consideration made by Mazda for my safety while driving the vehicle, and for anyone still requiring this repair, the part is "retired" and no longer available from Mazda for an open recall.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-24
  • VIN: JM1BL1UF5B1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Transmission Control Module Failed while driving. Do to this there was a loss in ability to properly shift which made driving dangerous. There has been several online reports and accounts about this specific car signaling a check engine light coming on, AT light coming on and when other indirect or incorrect codes like Solenoid (A), (B), or (C). Luckily I did not crash therefore, I have no inspections have been necessary by police or insurance representatives. But I did have my local mechanic shop diagnose the problem. I noticed the car shifted a little weird but, no lights, warning, or messages came prior to failure. In the first couple of minutes prior to the first failure, was a simple check engine light which read a code for the Solenoid. Local shop diagnosed Transmission Control Module Failure and proceeded to "fix" the module. Second Failure was mid drive, AT light came on and a few minutes into my drive back home to park the car, it failed.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
  • VIN: JM1BL1UG7B1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The Dashboard is peeling above the display screen that shows information for Radio,CD, AUX, Time, Volume, Temp Outside, etc (black display screen with orange text/font). Above this display screen the dashboard is lifting up. Which has created about a 1 inch+ gap/spacing between the display and dashboard This gap has resulted in the following: 1). Inhaling of windshield fluid through AC vents (4 total on dashboard) -- when using windshield wipers to dispense windshield fluid to wipe windshield clean of dirt/debris. You can smell the funes from the windshield fluid. And windows are not open when using the windshield wipers. 2). The material used for the dashboard has peeled off and gone in between the gap. It has resulted in the AC vents dispensing the material when adjusting the open and close feature of the AC vent or making any direction adjustment of where I want the air conditioning to blow in the car. 3) The gap/spacing between dashboard and display screen has also resulted in the interior side of the windshield to have a buildup of smog on the windshield. It has resulted in issues seeing at night time when cars are driving towards me with their headlights on. When i wipe down, it will be covered again with smog/film in a few days.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-12
  • VIN: JM1BL1UG3B1
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: When I’m driving the car, electricity of the car goes off, including headlights. The steering wheel gets locked. It doesn’t do that regularly. Sometimes, it takes weeks to do that, but sometimes it happens once in every five minutes. The red airbag light on the odometer turns on or off randomly. But, the worse case is that the airbags are not working while my steering wheel gets locked at the same time. They all start happening around the same time. I took my car to the Mazda Service and another mechanics. Neither of them found the issue. When I leave the car with them, the car doesn’t show these malfunctions. It literally randomly occurs. Therefore, they told me that I need to bring the car when it start happening in regular basis to understand the exact cause for the issue. I don’t know when it becomes a regular issue. 4-5 days ago, when I was turning right on a small street, the wheel locked again. I was about to crash. It’s a deadly malfunction, so I don’t want to wait until then.

Negative 2011 Mazda Mazda3 car reviews

  1. Tanner Jenkins 2024-05-17

Although I wasn't initially drawn to the appearance of this car, I decided to take it for a test drive since I have a soft spot for hatches. To my surprise, I fell in love with it immediately. The car felt like it was made just for me, with its perfect fit and handling that exceeded my expectations for a front-wheel-drive compact. The engine boasts an impressive 175 HP and plenty of torque. However, I did experience some issues with the car's cosmetics, such as windows that started rattling after a short period of ownership and a cylinder key lock in the steering column that had to be replaced twice. Unfortunately, I have now been informed that there is a cracked piston ring causing the car to consume oil at an alarming rate, which is concerning for a car with only 51000 miles. Despite these issues, I am still grateful for the time I spent with this car. However, I have decided to move on and invest in a Mini for my next car. Thank you, Mazda, for the memories.

Positive 2011 Mazda Mazda3 car reviews

  1. Zander Tillman 2024-11-20

It was a bit of a challenge for me to decide on which car to buy, but after my son introduced me to the Mazda3 design, I was sold. Despite the initially quirky front end, I found everything about Mazda to be sophisticated and elegant. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the 6-speed manual, which is truly a marvel of engineering. The car handles corners with unparalleled confidence, thanks in part to the close-ratio gearbox. The ride is supple without being floaty, and the brakes are very assuring without being blunt. The four-wheel independent suspension is indulgent without compromising handling. I have no complaints about my new Mazda - not only is the interior of the highest quality in its class, but everything came standard! Bravo, Mazda!

  2. Lamont Stokes 2024-11-12

Hey there! I was in a bit of a dilemma between the Honda Civic, VW Jetta and the Mazda3. While the Civic and VW were good cars, they lacked a certain pizzazz and features that I was looking for. However, the Mazda3 really stood out to me with its modern design and sleek body kit. The interior feels really solid and luxurious, which is always a plus. I know some people have mixed feelings about the front grill, but honestly, as long as you're not looking for a high-performance engine, it's not a big deal. Overall, the Mazda3 is a really fun car and it always puts a smile on my face! Enjoy!

  3. Dallin Larson 2024-10-11

This is my first Mazda and I'm so glad I got it! I've had my Mazda3 for two weeks now and I love it more every day. It handles superbly - it's nimble, lightweight, and has a sporty suspension. The manual feature is like a turbo magic button. It's the best designed compact economy sedan that drives like a mini BMW, looks cool, and isn't boxy. Oh, and it's priced right!

  4. Lane Berge 2024-10-04

This car is a great value for its price. I've owned it for a year and have only put 16K miles on it. I was looking for a fun-to-drive wagon or hatch and this car was more affordable than the other options I considered. It was an upgrade from my 2-door 2004 Accord EX V6 coupe, providing more space for my two kids, their belongings, and my hobbies. Although it is smaller overall than the Accord, it has more interior space. This car is perfect for my needs, including commuting (even dropping off the kids at school), weekend family outings, occasional trips, and space for errands and hobbies. I'm thrilled with this car after a year of ownership.

  5. Layne Russel 2024-09-06

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you're looking for a small car with utility options to replace your Audi A4. I completely understand the need to stay financially savvy during these times. Have you considered the Mazda 3? It's a great option that offers semi-luxury features, good safety reviews, and acceptable gas mileage all within the Compact $ range. The Mazda 3 handles nearly as well as your Audi and has respectable power. The front seats are very spacious and you won't feel 'jammed' in like you might in the Audi. The seats are comfortable and the dash controls are intuitive. Plus, the Mazda 3 is larger on the inside and the versatility of the hatchback was a key factor for me. If you're looking for more personality than a ho-hum Civic, I highly recommend giving the Mazda 3 a try! It gets 26 MPG mixed driving. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with.
