2015 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

Common 2015 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The 2015 Mazda3 has been known to have several common problems, including stereo system issues, excessive battery drain, and transmission slipping.
Stereo system issues are a prevalent complaint among 2015 Mazda3 owners, particularly during the first 50,000 miles of ownership. The primary concern is the screen freezing while in use, requiring a restart. Some owners have reported that a software update by a Mazda dealership resolves the problem for approximately $50, while others have opted to replace the screen, which costs around $650.
Excessive battery drain is another issue that has affected 2015 Mazda3 owners, particularly within the first 15,000 miles. The car has numerous electrical accessories, and if they are left on, the battery drains quickly. Diagnosing the source of the electrical issues costs around $75, while a new battery is approximately $150.
Transmission slipping is a less frequent but more serious problem that has been reported on some 2015 Mazda3 models, typically around 80,000 miles. This issue is often attributed to a gear or ring problem, and rebuilding the transmission is the primary solution, costing around $1,600.
In addition to these common problems, the 2015 Mazda3 has had three serious recalls, which are more severe than other compact cars from 2015. These recalls include a fuel shut-off valve and a deformed fuel tank, both of which can lead to a gasoline leak. Mazda has committed to replacing the valve and tanks in affected models for free.
Despite these issues, the 2015 Mazda3 is expected to last around 250,000 miles with proper maintenance, which is only slightly less than the highly-rated Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $300 per month. However, buyers should be prepared to replace the ignition lock, A/C blend door, and fuel filter, which can cost $400 and $300, respectively.
Overall, while the 2015 Mazda3 has had some common problems, it remains a reliable vehicle with a good reputation for build quality. The petrol-powered Mazda 3 performed superbly in a 2023 survey of the most reliable used cars, topping the list of most reliable family cars. Diesel engined models didn't perform quite as strongly, but Mazda remains one of the most reliable used car brands.

- Summary: I am filing this complaint regarding existing Manufacturer Recall Number 6023G (NHTSA Recall Number 23V-487). This recall has been posted since Jul 14, 2023 and the manufacturer has failed to remedy the recall in a timely manner. The remedy is noted on the recall page: "If inspections verify there is image distortion or flickering, the rearview camera will be replaced with a new part and a wiring harness fastening seal will be added." However, the manufacturer continues to state that the remedy is not yet available.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: 3MZBM1L76FM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The problem I have is with my rearview camera, as described in Manufacturer Recall Number 6023G / NHTSA Recall Number 23V-487. This problem has existed since I purchased the car in November 2022. The recall was announced on 7/14/23. Mazda has failed to provide a remedy. Dealers report that they don't have the parts needed to make the repair and that no remedy has been provided by Mazda. It is meaningless to have a recall if the manufacturer doesn't fix the problem. This is a serious safety issue as when the problem occurs, it is not possible to see behind the car via the camera/screen.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-08-01
- VIN: 3MZBM1L7XFM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The infotainment system sometimes has "ghost touches" where random buttons on the screen are pressed without a physical press. This is dangerous because it is extremely distracting to the driver. It often changes songs or calls a random person on my phone contact list. This requires me to quickly and constantly press the "back" button for the infotainment system to prevent it from placing a call. This forces my attention and hands away from the core task of driving while the car is in motion.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: JM1BM1L76F1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Vehicle touch screen has aggressive and persistent “ghost touch” during vehicle operation (while in drive), which should not be possible while in drive at all. This causes any setting or feature accessible through the vehicle “infotainment” system to be activated at random leading to distracting, undesired operation. There is no setting within the “infotainment” system that allows you to disable the touch screen, leading to dangerously distracting situations. There is a voluntary extended warranty period provided by Mazda, but I was not notified required by law, nor was the warranty service offered to me when bringing my car to dealership(s) during the warranty period. Mazda is not willing to pay to fix the acknowledged safety defect.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-03
- VIN: JM1BM1L34F1
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: This in regards to NHTSA Recall #: 23V-487. It has been 173 days since this recall was announced and I have not received any correspondence from the manufacturer. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-26
- VIN: 3MZBM1L79FM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 2015 Mazda is equipped with a touch screen infotainment system. The touch screen has started to randomly change settings when the car is stopped (and running). Since correcting these changes can't be done while the car is stopped (more random changes occur), changes must be made while the car is in motion. This creates a dangerous situation by needlessly distracting the driver.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-27
- VIN: JM1BM1M3XF1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The "infotainment" system, which includes media, navigation, hands-free calling, and the backup camera function, frequently malfunctions. The system will either freeze, or it will execute button presses on its own. The result is that it will change audio selection, make hands free calls via the connected phone, etc. on its own with no driver interaction, which is distracting while driving and could and has caused hazardous driving conditions. While I am listing the most recent occurrence in this form, this has been occurring on nearly every drive for the last 2 years. This typically happens in stop-and-go traffic. The vehicle has a manual transmission and the movement in the center console caused by shifting may be causing loose electrical connections to be disturbed and contribute to the behavior.
BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-28
- VIN: JM1BM1M75F1
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Mazda Mazda3. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V487000 (Back Over Prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. An undisclosed dealer was contacted and stated to the contact that there was no such recall for the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-18
- VIN: JM1BM1L3XF1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 1. IT IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION 2. THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM CUTS OFF AN ON AT WILL AND SWITCHES VIEWS WHEN USING THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM WHICH CAN CAUSE YOU TO BE DISTRACTED WHEN DRIVING,ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE DRIVING IN AN UNKNOWN AREA. 3. VEHICLE HAS BEEN SEEN BY THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP WHICH REFUSES TO REPAIR EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AS WELL AS OTHER MODELS. 4. NO WARNINGS, JUST STARTED CHANGING SCREENS ALL THE SUDDEN. MAZDA IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THE DRIVING DANGERS THAT THIS POSES BUT YET REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. I DID DISCOVER THAT THEY DID ISSUE SOME TYPE OF NOTICE ON THIS BUT IT WAS NEVER A FORMAL WRITTEN RECALL . ONLY FIXED IF YOU TOOK IN AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM,MOST PEOPLE I WOULD THINK DID NOT DO THIS BECAUSE IT IS COST PROHIBITIVE,THAT SYSTEM COST ABOUT $1400.00 TO REPLACE. THATS NOT POCKET CHANGE FOR MOST PEOPLE.SO WITHOUT A FORMAL WRITTEN MAILED LETTER MOST PEOPLE JUST TRIED TO LIVE WITH IT .
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-27
- VIN: JM1BM1M30F1
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was driving 90km and it suddenly stopped, I almost got into it, I put the 4 flashers and I let myself go on the shoulder, then call a towing after a machine test the error code P1092 appears , when I turn on my car, it's so miserable, it starts to bubble, it doesn't want to move forward anymore, lack of strength, All the rest is marked as PASS After googling around, I may have found an answer. Denso, who makes low pressure fuel pumps for a lot of different manufacturers, recalled several million of them a couple of years ago. They determined that there was a manufacturing defect that causes the pump impellers to crack and deform. Then they don't move enough gas to the front of the engine. I guess there is no pressure sensor between the tank and the high pressure fuel pump, so the problem isn't recognized by the car until the sensor in the fuel rail sees it. Several auto makers have issued recalls, including Mazda. But Mazda only went back as far as 2018. Toyota recalled cars as far back as 2013. There are now several lawsuits against various auto makers arguing that Denso knew about the problem in 2015, and the recalls should go further back in time. These two articles do a good job of covering the history of the problem
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-16
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 3MZBM1U75FM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Mazda Mazda3. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, smoke was coming from under the hood of the vehicle, followed by the vehicle shut down and the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact's son opened the hood and flames came out from under the hood. The contact son burned his fingers but did not seek medical attention. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted, and a complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 200,000.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-02
- VIN: JM1BM1L34F1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The infotainment center is "ghosting". This is a problem already recalled by Mazda but my car was not included. This started about 10 months ago. The result is that the gps system will shut down, the car, if linked to my phone will automatically dial random numbers, the radio stations will randomly change or be deleted. The GPS system has now become completely non functional. Having this random activity while driving or stopped creates a hazard as it requires frequent adjustments using my hands to correct the problems. The lack of a functioning gps is also problematic. This problem was brought to the attention of a Mazda dealer about 6 months ago and I was told no warranty repair was available. I also contacted Mazda USA by phone and was told no service would be provided. I have also sent a certified letter to Mazda USA with no response.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your hatchback! It sounds like you're getting great gas mileage with the 2.0 engine and 6-speed transmission. While it may not have as much power on the freeway, it's great to hear that 3rd gear does the job. The ride is also very smooth and quiet, which is always a plus. It's great to hear that the car feels like the old generation Audi A3 but with more features, and the quality and interior feel are impressive for the class. The handling is good and the ride is compliant enough. The GT trim's technology, including blind spot monitoring and navigation, is definitely worth it. I agree that the hatchback version is the way to go! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I have the 2015 2.5 s touring with a manual transmission, which was apparently the only year that this version was available with a manual. Lucky me! I have only driven about 2,500 miles so far, but I am pleased to report that the overall MPG is 34.8 (city/hwy combined). This is based on the actual gas consumed and trip odometer, not according to the fuel economy 'app' which, interestingly, always indicates a couple of MPG's lower. Please note that I have noticed an abrupt change in MPG lately, which I assume is due to the switch to winter gas. My last few fill-ups have been: 36.5; 37.2; 36.2; 32.5; 33.4. Anyway, I agree with most reviewers about the fit and finish, look, and feel of the car. All excellent. The one thing that surprised me the most (in the negative column) is the lack of automatic lights. Even my stripped-down Corolla had that feature! After all those years of never turning my lights on or off, I know I'm going to head out without my headlights on at some point. So strange to leave out such a feature, especially since it's not only convenient, but also a safety feature. In conclusion, I think this is a great car at a great value.

In June of 2010, I wrote an enthusiastic review of my then-new 2010 S Sport hatch with a manual transmission. Some changes in my financial situation allowed for an upgrade, and in November, I purchased a 2015 SGT hatch with a tech package. The most obvious improvement is in the quality and materials of the interior. The front, forward of the B pillars, would not look out of place in an entry-level luxury car. The Almond/Black seats look fantastic and are comfortable all day too. The car is considerably more refined, most notably in the quietness and power delivery of the engine/transmission. The gas mileage is a major improvement too. I'm getting 24 to 25 MPG around town and 37 plus on the highway. While I don't hot rod as much as I used to, I don't hyper mile either. I run at the speed limit at the least and most of the time with the AC on. I only have a little over 6,000 miles on the car, and since the 2010 continued to improve in this category until 15,000, I would expect it to continue to improve. The car is overall smoother, a bit quieter, a bit better riding, and a more relaxed cruiser. What hasn't changed is how the car drives. It's as fun, engaging, and satisfying as the 2010. Even though I'm a lifelong manual transmission fan, I'm really starting to like the paddle shifters. The problems, a noisy right rear shock was replaced under warranty. The infotainment system has had its share of issues. None of these has shut the system down completely, and all either cured themselves or were cured by shutting the car off and restarting. I've been told by my dealer that a major OS revision is in the works. Complaints, a little more sound deadening please. What happened to the door storage pockets, and who shrunk the center console?

I've been driving my Mazda3 hatchback for a year now and overall, I really enjoy it. However, I have had some issues with the navigation and rear view camera. The navigation system is a TomTom, but I personally prefer Garmin because I find it easier to use. One issue I've had with the TomTom is that it doesn't cancel the trip when you turn off the car or even after you reach your destination. If you forget to cancel the trip, it keeps trying to get you to the last destination. While this isn't a huge problem, it would be an easy fix for Mazda. The real issue came about 6 months in when the rear camera broke. The dealership spent four hours trying to fix it before deciding to replace the whole display unit, which took another two hours. Thankfully, it was covered under warranty. Unfortunately, the camera broke again just one month after the warranty expired. I'm calling the dealership today and hoping they will fix it for free. Despite these issues, I still love my car. In fact, it's been 2 and a half years since I got it and I haven't had any other problems. The car is now four years old and has only 24,000 miles on it, but I still love it!

I've had it for 6 months and it still drives like a dream! Trust me, it can put a smile on your face in every corner you drive. The handling is perfect and the styling is amazing - people around keep looking at you like they want to ask what car it is. The 2.5 engine is pretty strong in this car. I got an S touring (not the top trim) and while it's missing some tech like LED lights and real-leather seats, it still has leatherette seats, navigation, a 2.5 engine, paddle shifters, a big screen, and blind spot monitoring. You won't find anything with those features for around 23k$. Maybe you can, but not at that price. If you want to know anything negative about it, it's the noise and vibration, but I mostly feel it from the tires - those Dunlop tires that they gave me. They're good for performance, but not for daily driving. They can give you a headache.

We purchased our third Mazda in 2015, after being very satisfied with our previous two models (a Mazda 5 and a Mazda 3). However, we noticed significant quality differences with this new car right from the beginning. Within a month of purchasing the brand new car, one of the plastic hinges on the arm cushion over the center storage area broke off and needed to be replaced. Shortly after, one of the small knobs that hold up the string of the hatchback privacy cover also broke and needed to be replaced. About six months into owning the car, we noticed hairline cracks inside the display on the center console. Although we didn't think much of it at the time, unfortunately, we waited too long to address the issue. When the cracks became more severe and started to impair some of the information displayed on the screen, we went back to the dealership. However, we were informed that our warranty had expired and we would have to pay for the replacement of the screen (around $800-900). While this was disappointing news, we acknowledged that we should have gone to the dealership within our warranty period. Despite this setback, we still enjoy driving our Mazda and appreciate the good service we received from the dealership. We have been experiencing some issues with our car's software. Whenever we try to dial back into any other station, the same thing happens all over again. During phone conversations, the software presses the mute button on its own repeatedly, making it impossible to carry on any phone call. This has been extremely frustrating, especially during business calls. Additionally, the car's software has dialed into the settings on its own while we were driving, changing settings on its own. This is very dangerous since it all happens during driving. When you are alone in the car, you can’t pay attention to battling the car's software or what the car might be changing in your settings, while still paying attention to the traffic. We went back to the dealership with this problem and were charged $163 for a software update, which we expected to be free. The car performed fine for 2 days and then started doing the same thing all over again, just a lot worse. There are moments where the controller doesn’t even let us change anything manually anymore because the software is so rapidly skipping through items that at this point it seems like a hazard to drive with this car. After having gone back to the dealership again, we were told that the problem scan results need to be sent to Mazda in order to evaluate what it is that is wrong with our car. Most likely, they said we might need a new screen or module for the screen which would cost around $800-900. We feel very let down by the dealership as well as the company Mazda and have decided that this will be the last Mazda we have purchased. We also don’t feel like we can recommend the brand to our friends and family anymore since there has been such poor help/service. Everyone that gets into our car comments on the cracked screen and is shocked to hear that our car is only 3 years old.

I completely understand that noise perception is subjective. While some drivers may not be bothered by the amount of road and wind noise in this car, I personally find it to be quite unhealthy. I worry about the long-term effects of exposure to this kind of noise. At low speeds, the noise level is acceptable, but if your commute includes driving on freeways and interstate highways, the trips can become quite unpleasant. Taking this car on a long road trip is not something I would recommend. Although the premium Bose sound system is of excellent quality, it does little to mitigate the noise, and the audiopilot is essentially useless. It's a shame that the car is so noisy, as it really detracts from the enjoyment of the sound system. I understand that there are options available to decrease the noise, but they would involve considerable expense, which I am not ready to spend after purchasing a new car. For now, I've resorted to placing an earplug in my left ear and keeping my right ear open for safety reasons. With less noise, the car feels much more premium and is an absolute pleasure to drive.

This vehicle's alarm, navigation, and Bluetooth systems are experiencing issues. The alarm has been known to go off while driving, the navigation system turns off unexpectedly, and the Bluetooth connection is often unstable and prone to dropping. These issues are unacceptable given the cost of the vehicle.
