2014 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

Common 2014 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 has several common problems reported by owners, primarily falling under the categories of brakes, interior accessories, and electrical issues.
- Brake Problems: The most common brake problems include locked-up brakes and premature brake wear. Locked-up brakes can cause the vehicle to stop suddenly, potentially leading to accidents. The average cost to fix this issue is $2,600, and it typically occurs at around 30,000 miles. Premature brake wear, on the other hand, reduces the lifespan of the brakes and can lead to frequent replacements. The average cost to fix this issue is $200, and it typically occurs at around 33,000 miles.
- Interior Accessories Problems: The most common interior accessories problems include issues with the infotainment system, such as crashes and freezes. These issues can affect the driver's ability to operate the car's entertainment and navigation systems, making it difficult to use the car comfortably and safely. The average cost to fix these issues is not explicitly stated, and they typically occur at around 19,000 miles.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues in the 2014 MAZDA3 can include problems with the windows, windshield wipers, and airbag and seatbelt reminders. These issues can affect the car's safety features and make it difficult to operate the car comfortably. For example, a faulty electrical relay can prevent the windscreen wipers from working, while a software update may be needed to fix incorrect information displayed by the seatbelt and airbag reminder. Engine failure can also occur due to a problem with the engine protection software, which may not prevent the engine from over-revving and causing internal damage.
- Hydraulic Valve Clearance: Certain models built between 7 November 2018 and 13 May 2019 may have issues with the software controlling the hydraulic valve adjuster. A Mazda dealer should update the software to ensure it works correctly.
- Loose Wheel Nuts: A problem during the manufacture of some Mazda 3s made between 7 November 2018 and 13 May 2019 could mean that the wheel nuts aren't tightened correctly. If your car is affected, a Mazda dealer should check the tightness of the wheel nuts for you.
- Engine Failure: A problem with the engine protection software on 3s constructed between 30 April 2015 and 4 November 2017 might not prevent the engine from over-revving and therefore cause internal damage that could lead to an engine failure. If your car is affected, it will need improved software installed to fix the issue.
- Interior Mirror: The mirror glass on examples made between 4 December 2018 and 20 March 2019 might detach from the mirror housing. If your car is affected by this, you local Mazda dealer will be able to replace the mirror for you.
- Inoperable Windscreen Wipers: A faulty electrical relay on certain Mazda 3s built between 20 July 2015 and 11 July 2017 might prevent the windscreen wipers from working. Speak to a Mazda dealer to find out if your car is affected, because a new relay will be needed to sort the problem.
- Airbag and Seatbelt Reminder: The reminder for the seatbelt and airbag might display incorrect information. Affected examples manufactured between 6 November 2018 and 7 March 2019 will need to have a software update to solve the problem.
- Rear Parking Sensors: Rear parking sensors weren't standard across the range, so your prospective purchase might not have them fitted. Due to the rather thick rear pillars, you might find it quite hard to park – at least initially. The previous owner might also have struggled, so check the extremes of the car for damage, because this could be costly to put right.
- Hydraulic Valve Clearance: The software controlling the hydraulic valve adjuster on certain models built between 7 November 2018 and 13 May 2019 will need to be updated by a Mazda dealer to make sure it all works correctly.
These common problems with the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3 can affect the car's safety, reliability, and overall performance. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the car remains safe and reliable for the driver and passengers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
- VIN: JM1BM1M7XE1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: In reference to the existing recall on my vehicle (Manufacturer recall # 6023G, NHTSA recall #: 23V-487), I would like to report that the vehicle manufacturer (Mazda) has yet to offer a solution to this problem, which is now over a year old. In addition to the reported distortion/flickering from the rearview camera, we are experiencing times (about 1 in 10) where the image displayed from the rearview camera is simply a blank screen. This makes operating the vehicle in reverse more difficult and dangerous, especially in situations were visibility is limited (night, dark spaces, garage parking, etc.). This is a safety issue, first and foremost, and a solution from the manufacturer is long overdue.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
- VIN: JM1BM1M34E1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: There is an existing recall on my car 2014 Mazda 3 dated July 14, 2023 for the glitches with rearview mirror and rearview mirror disconnecting at random. While this has been outstanding for one year Mazda discourages customers from scheduling appointment to get the vehicle inspected and fixed in accordance to the guidance listed in NHTSA recall. I visited Capitol Mazda San Jose on 11/18/23 as well as called them to schedule a check on 7/17/24 but both these times I was informed that there are no parts to be replaced. I believe the remedy listed with NHTSA is not being followed and the customers do not have a timeline to get a resolution to this issue. I'm sharing the remedy listed by NHTSA. "Dealers will inspect vehicles. If inspections verify no concern with the rearview camera image, a wiring harness fastening seal will be added to prevent harness movement. If inspections verify there is image distortion or flickering, the rearview camera will be replaced with a new part and a wiring harness fastening seal will be added." I'm unable to understand if there are efforts by Mazda to provide sufficient labor work to inspect the vehicle and the fastening seals are at all in their timeline. I think NHTSA should assess what progress has been made by Mazda in resolving this critical recall.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-22
- VIN: JM1BM1M74E1
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I thought I smelled gasoline when sitting in my car. I got out and inspected all around the vehicle, discovering that gasoline was leaking underneath. Both the hazardous fumes and the potential for a fire in the vehicle put me at risk. The loss of fuel on public roads could have resulted in danger to anyone behind me on the road due to the fire hazard and potential loss of traction before I noticed the problem. I immediately brought the car to my mechanic's personal shop (he is also a master mechanic at a local automotive dealership). He confirmed that the leak was gasoline and diagnosed the problem as a rusted seam near the top of the fuel tank having ruptured, allowing the leak and filling the cabin of the vehicle with fumes. I knew that the local Mazda dealership would be unable to repair this promptly, if at all, since they had just fixed the exact same problem in my mother in law's vehicle of the same make, model, and year, and had struggled to get the replacement tank for weeks due to the supply chain problems experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, I paid my own mechanic to source and install a tank, and coat it with anti-corrosion treatment. I contacted Mazda, explained the problem, and demanded they reimburse me, as the car was only 8 years old at the time. The Mazda representative refused to do anything to help me and did not answer my subsequent emails, so I posted about this problem on the [XXX] forum, and discovered others have had the same problem as my mother in law and I. There were no warning signs of the problem other than the smell of gasoline. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-28
- VIN: JM1BM1M39E1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The manufacturer has not provided a timely remedy for a known safety issue on the backup camera for my car. (Jul 14,2023; Manufacturer Recall Number6023G; NHTSA Recall Number23V-487). I purchased the car in 2014. Around 2017, the backup camera began flickering and sometimes failing to load completely. I took the vehicle to the Mazda dealership in Tustin, CA and they said there was nothing wrong with the camera. They said that I would have to pay approximately $500 for a new camera if I wanted one. I could not afford to replace the camera at that time, so the problem has persisted ever since. In July 2023, a notice of a safety recall was issued for the same issue with the camera. On [XXX], I took the vehicle to the same Mazda dealership and asked for the camera to be replaced due to the recall. They inspected the vehicle and agreed the camera was defective; however, they said they didn't have the parts yet to replace the camera and that I would receive something "official" about the recall later. It is now April 2024 and I have heard nothing. This safety issue has been going on for 7+ years and Mazda needs to take responsibility. The fact that they wanted to charge me for the camera in 2017 and now they say no cameras are available leaves me to believe that they are stalling and just don't want to incur the cost to fix the safety issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-30
- VIN: JM1BM1L3XE1
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: While accelerating onto a highway, my engine overheating light flashed then stayed on and my acceleration suddenly throttled back and my car started slowing down. I was able to pull over on the shoulder, but there was a close call with a semi bearing down. I had my car towed to a repair shop, where they told me the water jacket had cracked and the overheating caused a blown head gasket. This was repaired and tested. A week later, I got the car up to highway speeds and the engine overheating light flashed again. When I stopped and looked at the engine, there was foamy tan coolant all over the place. Towed it back again and was told the weld had failed. But in trying to find a used cylinder to replace mine, the shop told me that all of their sources said they had no used ones available because the same crack happened on those as well.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- VIN: JM1BM1K76E1
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The car has a smell of fuel when filling the tank and for a long period following. My mechanic tells me the surface of the tank has decayed and that it will cost $1600 to correct. I don't have the $1600, so he told me to fill the tank only halfway, which seems to have solved the issue of the fuel smell. I can't understand how a fuel tank could decay and believe Mazda should be responsible for something that is poorly designed or improperly manufactured.

- Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
- Components: PARKING BRAKE
- Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles. Water could possibly enter the brake caliper causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and possibly bind.
- Consequence: If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will check the parking brake actuator shafts, replacing any that are corroded, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk were mailed August 24, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1217F.

- Summary: Mazda Motors North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles manufactured January 4, 2014, to September 18, 2015. The fuel tank of the affected vehicles may have been improperly handled during manufacturing and, as a result, the welded attachment of the Inlet Check Valve (ICV) may fail and allow fuel to leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and depending on the tank lot number, dealers will inspect the ICV weld, replacing the fuel tank, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began November 1, 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 0116I.

When driving the affected vehicles in heavy rain or in deep puddles, the alternator belt may slip causing the Power Control module (PCM) to incorrectly assume failure of the charging system.
- Consequence: Once the PCM assumes that the charging system has failed, the vehicle will stop charging and could result in poor acceleration, loss of steering assist and windshield wiper operation, and a possible engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the PCM with updated software, free of charge. The recall began on May 19, 2014. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 7314D.

The new car smell may be long gone and the parking lot dings may have already happened (hopefully), but I still love this car and want another one (which is why I stopped in). After 3 years of daily 21-mile commutes, part of which is a twisty mountain road and part is a jammed SoCal freeway, I can confidently say that this car has lived up to its promises. The best features are its performance, reliability, looks and trim, storage area for a little car, and the little things like the HUD display and standard blind spot monitoring. This car lets me drive the way I want to, whether I'm playing F1 on the mountain curves or shooting into that gap in traffic. The mileage is excellent, especially considering that I drive like an adolescent. This car is perfect for drivers. There are a few little things that detract from the experience, such as the HUD occasionally failing to stay up in the cold (just restart the car), the Bluetooth occasionally coming and going, and the nav being a bit lame. However, I'd rather use my phone anyway (and the voice recognition/search is just ridiculous). I have not had any Bluetooth nightmares, but perhaps it's more traumatic for some. The dealer is the usual POS, but that's not brand-specific. I still can't believe how much car this was for the money, and the Edmunds review that pointed me to it in the first place was spot on. If only I could find another s Touring model within a 4-hour drive... I think the 2.5l premium is totally worth it, but the Grand Touring extras do nothing for me at the price point. The s Touring seems like the sweet spot for an aggressive commutemobile. I have not yet found another vehicle in the class that delivers this much value for the money.

I purchased this car back in July 2014 after comparing it to the Honda Civic. As a long-time Honda owner, having owned 15 new Honda's since my first in 1983, I was initially hesitant to switch to a different brand. However, after considering the technology, mileage, fit and finish, and price, I ultimately decided on the Mazda. While I appreciate that Honda doesn't have option packages, the Mazda's price point of under $18,000 made it a no-brainer. Additionally, the Mazda's powertrain technology is far ahead of the Civic, which still lacks direct injection, a 6-speed manual, or a new dash design. The Mazda also outperforms the Civic LX in terms of mileage, with my average combined mileage for the first 5000 miles holding steady at 42.8mpg (50% city/50% highway), even in Alaska!

This car is fun to drive and has good gas mileage. However, the advertised fuel efficiency for combined driving may not be entirely accurate as I only get an average of 30 MPG with mostly highway driving. On a long trip with minimal use of heat and AC, I was able to achieve 40/41 MPG. It's worth noting that using the heat or seat warmers can significantly lower the MPG if the 'average this drive' MPG is accurate. I paid extra for the Navigation and heated seats, which I didn't really want, and unfortunately, the tech package still has some issues even after an update. The touchscreen is mostly unusable, but the seats still heat up, although not as well as they did at first. I purchased this car in December, and so far, the engine has been reliable. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and hope that it continues to be reliable in the long-term.

I've owned two Mazda Protégé 5's before purchasing my Mazda 3, and I still own a 2003 P5. When the 2014 Mazda 3 came out with its new design, it was perfect timing for me to look for a new daily driver. I had already had great experiences with Mazda products in terms of reliability, so it was an easy decision to go back to Mazda, even though most of my friends and family members were driving Civics or Corollas. While those are definitely great cars, I wanted something that handles well, saves gas, and looks cool at the same time. The Mazda 3 has not disappointed me, even as of today, almost 5 years after purchasing it brand new. Throughout my years of ownership (M3 Hatchback I GT ~56K miles), I have only been to the dealership twice - once for a recall related to GPS map update or something while the second visit had to do with a the hydraulic belt tensioner leak which were both covered under warranty. The hydraulic belt tensioner was replaced by the dealership, but it started leaking again after another 10K or so. If anything, the tensioner leak is the only complaint that I have with the car. The Mazda infotainment system has also acted up a handful of times (frozen screen), but it would fix itself after a restart. The most recent maintenance item was the rear brake pads which were replaced at 56k. I believe the rear driver-side pads were seized for some reason which caused premature wear as the front pads were still the OEM pads from factory with a healthy amount of pads left. I could have fixed the issue earlier as the rear driver-side wheel was always covered with the most brake dust, but I was too lazy to inspect the pads. The Mazda 3 has never left me stranded and has been a comfortable commuter. Everything in the car is still working perfectly fine as day one. My favorite part of the car is the blind-spot monitoring system, which is especially handy during pouring rains. The heated seats are definitely a plus. I really appreciate how intuitive and user-friendly the infotainment system is. I also love the fact that the reverse camera's parking guide doesn't turn when you turn the steering wheel, which is a personal preference of mine. While the visibility isn't as great as older cars due to the smaller rear windows, the interior of the car is well-built and the cabin noise is well-controlled. The materials used and fit and finish of the car are solid and probably one of the best in its class. Although the 2.0 liter engine is not powerful, it's sufficient for what the car is built for, which is a gas-saving commuter. The engine noise can be a bit noisy going uphill or accelerating with 4 passengers, but there's plenty of power to get the car moving for highway merging at around 3k-4k rpm. It's worth noting that trunk space can be limited if you have a growing family (i.e. strollers...). Overall, I think it's a great car! In August 2019, I sold my Mazda 3 to a family member and brought home a 2019 CX9. As of today (9/5/2020), at around 64k, the only items that will need to be replaced are the OEM tires and the battery. My opinion on the car still has not changed. It's a great little car that looks great, feels great (interior), drives and handles well.

It's always a challenge to review a car in just a few words, but I'll do my best! This car is truly impressive. It's even faster than I expected, and the automatic gearbox is simply terrific. The sport mode and paddle shifters are awesome features that make driving this car a real pleasure. On my drive from the Bay Area to San Diego (mostly on the highway), I averaged an impressive 38.5 mpg, and around town, I get a solid 28 mpg, so it's definitely fuel efficient. The interior and exterior are both great, and the car feels very deluxe. While I've only put 1.5k on it so far, I've heard that Mazda's are reliable and offer good value. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

I am a commuter and I fell in love with this car at first sight. It had everything I wanted: great gas mileage, bluetooth, and even a great look. The first 80k miles were bliss. I recommended this car to everyone that asked. However, I did experience some issues with sensor failures that left me stranded, and the brakes feel a bit shaky. It's important to note that this car may not be the best option if you're buying used. Overall, I still think this car has a lot of great features and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable vehicle.
