Toyota Prius 2007 problems
The Toyota Prius (/ˈpriːəs/ PREE-əss) (Japanese: トヨタ・プリウス, Hepburn: Toyota Puriusu) is a compact/small family liftback (supermini/subcompact sedan until 2003) produced by Toyota. The Prius has a hybrid drivetrain, combined with an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Initially offered as a four-door sedan, it has been produced only as a five-door liftback since 2003.
The Prius was developed by Toyota to be the "car for the 21st century"; it was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, first going on sale in Japan in 1997 at all four Toyota Japan dealership chains, and subsequently introduced worldwide in 2000.
In 2011, Toyota expanded the Prius family to include the Prius v, an MPV, and the Prius c, a subcompact hatchback. The production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid was released in 2012. The second generation of the plug-in variant, the Prius Prime, was released in the U.S. in November 2016. The Prius family totaled global cumulative sales of 6.1 million units in January 2017, representing 61% of the 10 million hybrids sold worldwide by Toyota since 1997. Toyota sells the Prius in over 90 markets, with Japan and the United States being its largest markets.

Common Toyota Prius 2007 problems
The 2007 Toyota Prius is known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints and expert analysis:
- Headlight Problems: Headlight issues are the most common complaint among 2007 Prius owners, with many reporting problems around 100,000 miles. The issue usually involves the bulbs burning out or the ballast failing, which can be resolved by replacing the bulbs or the ballast. Replacement costs for bulbs are around $65, while ballast replacement can cost up to $200.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Toyota vehicles, including the 2007 Prius, are known to consume more oil than other cars. This issue tends to show up around 150,000 miles and can be addressed by regularly checking the oil level and topping it off as needed.
- Dashboard Display Problems: Dashboard display problems, such as the lights behind the dash turning off, are common in the 2007 Prius, usually occurring around 125,000 miles. Replacing the lights behind the dash can cost around $270.
- Engine Water Pump Leaks: Engine water pump leaks are another common issue in the 2007 Prius, typically found around 150,000 miles. The repair cost for this issue ranges from $350 to $450.
- Hybrid Cooling Pump Failure: The hybrid cooling pump, which is responsible for cooling the inverter, can fail, triggering the code P0A93. This issue can be resolved by replacing the pump in the inverter.
- HID Headlights: Some 2007 Prius owners have reported issues with HID headlights, such as flickering and erratic operation. Aftermarket HID units are available, but Toyota parts can be pricey.
- Wheel Bearing Failure: A humming or rumbling sound can indicate a failed wheel bearing, with replacement costs ranging from $350 to $480.
- Powertrain Issues: The 1.5L gasoline engine in the Prius is similar to the Toyota Yaris but has been modified for the hybrid drive train. Two electric motors that can also serve as generators are part of the hybrid "transmission" unit. The gear ratio is managed by a single electric motor, which also recharges the hybrid battery. The second motor provides more power during acceleration while also assisting with low-speed propulsion. When braking or coasting, energy is also recovered using the second motor. A maintenance-free timing chain is a feature of the Prius engine from 2004 to 2009.
- Handling and Ride: The Prius handles reasonably well, but not particularly sportily. The ride is quiet and gentle. The electric motor makes the Prius quick to accelerate. The limited turning radius and excellent all-around visibility are additional benefits. Driving the Prius in deep snow is challenging due to the low clearance and lack of torque.
- Maintenance Costs: In general, maintaining a Prius is not very expensive. Tires cost little. Regenerative braking makes brakes last more than 60,000 miles. There is no alternator, and the water pump is only driven by a single, minuscule drive belt. The belt is inexpensive and is easily changed. Only 3.9 quarts of conventional 5W-30 oil are required for oil changes.
It is important to note that these issues do not necessarily affect all 2007 Prius vehicles and may vary depending on the car's history, maintenance, and usage. Regular servicing and maintenance can help prevent or address these common problems, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the 2007 Toyota Prius.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- VIN: JTDKB20U877
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: After an Interstate highway drive and when then discovering my tire had been punctured by a screw or other object, but with still enough air in the tire to drive to a tire repair facility, I drove to have the puncture repaired. On repairing the puncture of the 185/65R15 tire, the repairman observed a portion of the tire’s steel belt to be visible on the inside of the tire. An immediate replacement of the tire was recommended, but this facility did not have an identical tire to provide. The facility emailed me a picture of the protruding steel belt. This writer has twice reported the matter to the tire’s manufacturer, but still no response since the first report on 09/24/2024. No party other than the tire repair facility has inspected the tire. This writer has recognized no noticeable effect of the defect, but the repair facility stated it could cause a blowout at any time.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: JTDKB20U477
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There is a known, (by Toyota), issue with the ABS brake actuator in many Prius generations including the 2nd generation Prius that I own. My mechanic said it would cost @$3000 to fix. This as I said is and has been a known issue with these cars that affects the ABS braking and puts myself, my family and any one on the road near me in danger. Toyota was quietly replacing these under an unadvertised, extended warranty program. Mine is out of this so called warranty period but if this was a known issue and was corrected at no cost due to the fact Toyota knew there was an issue why was there never a recall on the affected models all with this same problem? I feel that this dangerous problem should be corrected by Toyota at no cost to the owners of their dangerous affected vehicles.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-01-01
- VIN: JTDKB20U077
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Hatch release has melted, see NHTSA ID’s for example: 10511408, 10533059, 10504366, 10496197, 10448470, etc.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
- VIN: JTDKB20U773
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: This complaint is about the problematic brake actuator for a Toyota Prius Hybrid. I started to hear frequent whirring noises from the front part of the vehicle a few month ago. Additionally, whenever my foot is on the brake, a mechanic sound appears. Recently, the whirring noise is becoming more frequent, on a approximately every 10-15 sec frequency. I took the car to the dealership last Friday, and the mechanics stated the issues being associated with the brake actuator. The dealership also stated that if repairs or replacement was recommended after diagnosis, the cost would be on the order of $2,000 to $3,000. I contacted my regular mechanic shop, and found out that they do not perform brake actuator repairs on a hybrid. This issue left me with limited choice for solution because it seems to be specialized and is expensive to fix, and most importantly, this issue could lead to a safety hazard for my future transportation.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-12
- VIN: JTDKB20U277
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I CANT SEE THE ROAD. Who is in charge of allowing these new bright LED headlights? They make it very hard to see where I’m driving when they’re eye level with my car!! So all I see is a bunch of LED lights coming straight at me, which is very unacceptable because now I can’t see the road. Making it a very obvious safety concern which is weird when I thought the government is supposed to be preventing stuff like this from happening. What the heck
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
- VIN: JTDKB20U577
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I keep replacing P1116 and it keeps coming back also I was driving up a hill when I lost power and the car wouldn't accelerate. It would turn on and go into gear but not go anywhere. I know it says my vin doesn't have recalls but why am I experiencing them
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-12
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTDKB20U373
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The lights spontaneously turned off while driving on a cloudy night on an unlit section of interstate. While slowing the car down, it went onto gravel, semi-circled around and flipped over onto the lower median. No air bag deployed. No protection from shoulder seat belt. Head hit steering wheel, and I briefly lost consciousness. Tests showed skull and cervical fractures. The car was "totaled." I was planning a move. Now I consider myself to be lucky to be alive. I am rewriting because of previous a NHTSA computer malfunction changing a serious injury to "NO" injury on the questionnaire.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-12
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JTDKB20U373
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,AIR BAGS
- Summary: Both headlights failed, one earlier, then the second, on a cloudy night on an unlit, deserted rural stretch of interstate highway. Driver started slowing down from 60 mph, looking for a place to pull over. An accident resulted--only the defective car was involved. No airbag was deployed. The driver was injured. (Full recovery--months.) The car was totaled.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
- VIN: JTDKB20U773
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Combination meter often does not turn on when turning the car on. This means you cannot see a speedometer, any warning lights, fuel tank levels, or mileage. Also the trunk gets locked and is unable to open. Sometimes the car will not turn off. This has been happening on and off for over a year but has gotten increasingly worse. There are no warning signs. This can happen any time you turn on the car but might not always happen. It can also prevent you from turning off the car. When searching online, it seems this is a common problem with high mileage Priuses between 2005-2009 and so Toyota extended a warranty on it but did not tell all of the owners, most likely to get out of a recall.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-16
- VIN: JTDKB20UX73
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brake Actuator system (ABS) needs to be replaced with only 133K miles on my 2007 prius. I heard a sound and had a Toyota service center check for any issues. They told me it was the ABS system that needed to be replaced at a cost of $5K. The repair costs are greater than the car value. Toyota knows about this year, make, and model issue. I contacted Toyota Corporate about this this week and learned there was an extended warranty for this specific issue on my car. They refuse to honor the extended ABS system warranty even though I'm under 150K miles per the warranty. They told me a letter was sent to me about replacing it at no cost in 2017. I never received the letter nor did the Toyota service center I used at the time tell me about the issue. Additional Info: I am not driving the car since the dash lights have come on - red triangle, check engine, VSC and (!) symbol - with a circle inside the (). Noise checked at Toyota dealer service center and confirmed it's the brake actuator system No inspection by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep, or others The sound came first when pressing the brake pedal and then the lights came on after taking to the service center
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JTDKB20U777
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: catalytic converter is easily accessible and there should be a recall to have a safety operation and stop all these cars from being sold in the market because there is a rise in many thefts of the catalytic converter due to it being very easily accusable without any guard in place to prevent thieves from getting to it to remove and sell for parts. Spray paint can be cleaned off and vin numbers can be sanded down. simply trying that will not work. i was unaware that it was stolen off of the vehicle until i drove it a little ways to where the vehicle was then burning and i could smell it catching on fire
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
- VIN: JTDKB20U777
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When the 12-volt battery in this car dies, there is NO warning light to indicate the battery is dead or is running low. The driver is given no warning or indication prior to the car being disabled. Once the battery dies, the vehicle immediately decelerates, there is no acceleration, the braking system becomes mostly disabled, and the power steering is not functional. The car becomes disabled, while being driven, without warning. When this event happens, there is a high pitched screaching alarm, and the majority of the dash lights turn on. None of which indicate there is an issue with the 12-volt battery. The large red triangle light with the exclamation mark comes on, as well the lights indicating that there is a problem with the brakes. Additional dash lights also turn on during this dangerous event. The rear view monitor screen states that there is an issue with the transmission. The reality that a minor 12- volt battery is responsible for disabling a vehicle is extremely dangerous, especially since it happens when the car is being driven. This is a serious issue. Toyota must include an indicator light that warns the driver the battery is low prior to the car being being disabled. Please investigate this matter, as it seems to be a common problem, based on online research. My safety was in jeopardy due to the fact that I was driving the car on a main road, with moderate traffic, and lost control of the car as it became disabled. To get my car off of the road required the assistance of several good Samaritans who used their bodies to block traffic in order to get the car out of the flow of oncoming traffic. Fourteen days later, after the battery was replaced, and the car serviced/inspected, I drove the car 10 to 15 miles, wherein the car did the same thing. Per the dealership, the issue was not the 12- bolt battery. Thank you for your time and consideration. Kindly, Cynthia Becker 623-209-4290 [email protected]
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-30

- Summary: The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while at a stop light, she attempted to drive however, the vehicle failed to exceed 25 MPH. The HC battery, ECU, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the vehicle displayed DTC code: P3190 (Engine Failure). The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the hybrid battery was severely drained, and the mechanic retrieved DTC codes: P3000 and P0A80 for the hybrid battery pack. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic, who replaced the battery, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000. The contact stated the vehicle was actually overfilled with oil at the mechanic's shop that performed the oil change, so that is what caused the issues with my vehicle.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-18
- Number Of Injuries: 1

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-17
- VIN: JTDKB20U673
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Due to water infiltration from a poorly manufactured hatchback, water is able to get inside the "Supply Assy, Brake Control Power" module in the trunk of the second generation Prius. This part ultimately shorts out and fails causing a loss of regenerative braking and a "brake warning light". Toyota seems to be aware of the problem as a replacement module is now sold in a "water proof sheet" (see attached). Toyota has also moved this module to a different location (away from the rear wall of the Prius) in other hybrid vehicles (such as in the Camry where it has been moved forward). I wonder if the hybrid batteries in the Prius also fail due to water infiltration in the rear sections of these cars.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-05
- VIN: JTDKB20U873
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: After pressing gas pedal almost all the way - it stuck for few seconds. I was able to stop by heavy braking. Has nothing to do with floor mats!
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-11
- VIN: JTDKB20U877
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Toyota North America failed to notify me of the latent defect in the Headlight Operating System. I have had ongoing issues with the flickering of the lights for multiple years. I finally saved up enough money to try and fix the problem and spent $2854.34. After multiple failed attempts to get the problem fixed and having both headlights shut off simultaneously, I went to Alexandria Toyota in Virginia on October 20,2022 to get the problem diagnosed. The Automobile Status Report showed that the failed headlights were a direct result of the latent defect in the Headlight Operating System that was repaired free of charge in two separate Support Programs; one that ended in 2012, and the other in 2013. When I contacted Customer Support Service on October 24, 2022, to inquire when Toyota contacted me and where they sent the Support Program Information regarding the headlight issue, none of the three managers could tell me the date this was sent out, nor the address. I didn’t own the car in 2012, and never received the 2017 notice. If I had received this information, I would have brought my vehicle in at that time. I purchased this vehicle back in 2013 as a “Toyota Certified Vehicle” with the understanding that the 160-point quality assurance meant that this was a safe and reliable vehicle, and that any problems or latent defects were fixed. Toyota misrepresented themselves and are in contradiction with their own policy that states: “The TCUV policy prohibits the certification of any vehicle with an outstanding Safety Recall, Special Service Campaign, or Limited Service Campaign. Thus, no affected units are to be designated, sold, or delivered as a TCUV until all applicable Safety Recalls, Special Service Campaigns, and Limited Service Campaigns have been completed on that vehicle.”
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-25
- VIN: JTDKB20U473
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Instrument panel cluster failure. Panel goes black while driving and lose power. Vehicle won’t start or shut off. My vehicle was getting serviced at the dealership and they couldn’t start the vehicle. I was told the instrument panel cluster was the problem. I contacted Toyota Customer Service, and was told they were aware of the issue. They had issued an extended warranty and sent out a letter to all owners this warranty has expired in 2016. If you purchased your vehicle after 2016 you would not have received any notice regarding this. While driving you can’t see you speed, your gear selection, fuel level, lights and no warning lights. The warning is that your vehicle won’t start or shut off.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-02
- VIN: JTDKB20U477
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Toyota has admitted that their BRAKE ACTUATOR assembly on their 2007 Prius FAILS and they will fix it for no charge BUT ONLY IF YOU COMPLAIN. The brake actuator on my 2007 Prius is now failing and the braking system has become UNRELIABLE and UNSAFE. Toyota should replace my failing brake actuator with a new unit for no cost because this is a SAFETY ISSUE. I refuse to pay $3000 out of my own pocket to repair an item which has a long history of FAILING.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-19
- VIN: JTDKB20U877

The vehicle stability control, ABS, and brake light warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed with an actuator and brake booster failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 203,202.
Toyota Prius 2007 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the Toyota Prius 2007.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
- Consequence: Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
- Consequence: The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

I recently purchased a 2007 Prius and was fortunate enough to find it on the lot without having to wait for an order. The Seaside Pearl paint job looks stunning in the sunlight. The car comes with the level 5 option package and I must say, it is a remarkable vehicle. The advanced technology is impressive and makes other cars seem outdated. The electric and gas systems work seamlessly together, providing a smooth ride. Despite being 6'3 and husky, I find the car to be a comfortable fit. I am currently getting an impressive 45-48 mpg overall, which is a great feeling. I am thoroughly enjoying my new car and love passing gas stations with a smirk on my face!

I've always had a soft spot for Honda and Toyota vehicles. I've relied on both manufacturers and they've never let me down. The Prius is my absolute favorite - I can't get enough of it! It's such a joy to drive and handles my 60 mile one way commute to work with ease. The handling and responsiveness are better than average, and the fuel economy is simply outstanding. The consumption monitor has even helped me correct my gas guzzling driving habits! The ride is smooth and quiet on the highway, and the Hybrid Synergy Drive is a fascinating topic to discuss with friends. I really wish I had owned one much sooner - it's just such a cool car!

I've been the proud owner of this vehicle for over 5 years now. I purchased it in 2014 with a rebuilt title and 89k miles on the clock. Since then, the car has clocked up an impressive 215k miles and I'm happy to report that it has required NO major repairs. This car is incredibly reliable and has proven to be a tiny tank, built to last for a very long time! The only issue I've encountered is that the car stalls in heavy rain when travelling over 60mph and when the oil is low. However, I'm able to quickly restart the system and be back on the road in less than a few minutes. Overall, this car's transmission, gas engine, and hybrid motor will keep it on the road for years to come!

Average gas mileage for 5700 miles is over 51 MPG. Keeping a running total of use in my business has helped me understand how to feel this car and use the onboard display to increase mileage and reduce greenhouse emissions. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well this vehicle performs and handles, especially considering my other vehicle is a Nissan 350Z. I highly recommend considering this automobile as a socially responsible alternative to increased dependence on imported oil from unstable sources.

The car is truly exceptional and has always been one of my best purchases. While I have never had any complaints, I recently encountered a minor issue that I am confident can be resolved. Due to the positioning of my garage and storage shelf, I am unable to open the hood without moving the car a few feet. Additionally, I accidentally left the driver's door ajar, causing the 12 volt battery to drain. However, I am knowledgeable about the car's mechanics and am confident in my ability to resolve these issues with ease. The owner's manual suggests a solution that involves accessing the battery through the rear hatchback door, which can be a bit tricky, but I am confident in my ability to handle it. Overall, I remain extremely satisfied with my purchase and am confident in the car's reliability and performance.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Prius. I bought it new during a warm Maine summer and it's been a great car so far. When the temperature is above 50 degrees, I get an impressive 50 mpg on the winding, hilly back roads of Maine. However, during short trips in the winter, the gas mileage drops to around 30 mpg. The original tires were quiet and helped with gas mileage, but unfortunately only lasted 21K miles. I decided to switch to a harder tire that should last longer, but it has significantly decreased my gas mileage to 30-45 mpg. On the highway, I average around 42-43 mpg, but I have noticed that the car is very light and can be unstable in windy conditions or at speeds above 80mph. Overall, the cost to maintain this car is a bit above average, but I still think it's a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and eco-friendly vehicle.

When I first got my Prius, I absolutely loved it! However, after a year and a half, I've been experiencing some issues. For the past two months, I've had trouble with the headlights going out on me, and the car has failed to start several times. I took it to a dealership in Maryland, and they quoted me $400 to replace just one headlight. When I mentioned the starting issue, they initially thought it was the battery, but upon inspection, they found that it was fine. Unfortunately, two days later, the car wouldn't start again, and I'm not sure how much a new battery for this car will cost. It's frustrating when you buy a car and expect it to last longer than a year and a half, but I'm hopeful that we can find a solution to these issues.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Prius. I bought it new and overall, I really love the car. However, I have noticed a couple of issues that I wanted to bring to your attention. After driving around 30,000 miles, I started to experience some trouble with the headlights. At first, it was just the driver's side that would go out, but over time the problem has gotten worse. Now, with 110,000 miles on the car, I have to flick the headlights off and on again just to drive down the street. Unfortunately, there is no recall for this issue and it doesn't seem like there will be one in the future. The problem is caused by the HID lights overheating the ECUs, which are quite expensive to replace at $600 each. I would recommend checking if this issue has been resolved before purchasing any year of Prius. Despite this common problem, I still love my car!

Our Prius was purchased brand new in 2007 and functioned well for the first few years. However, at around 85k miles, we noticed a sudden decline in gas mileage. Despite purchasing a new set of tires designed for hybrids from Les Schwabb, the MPG did not improve. We suspected that the hybrid battery was failing, but the dealer refused to test it and instead blamed the issue on the tires. We purchased another set of tires from the dealer, but the MPG continued to decrease. Throughout this ordeal, the car and battery were under full warranty, but the dealer was unwilling to diagnose the problem. Unfortunately, about a month after the warranty for the hybrid battery expired, the car failed to start. The dealer quoted us $5k to fix the transaxle, but we took it to an independent hybrid shop where the codes clearly indicated that it was the hybrid battery. After replacing the battery and spark plugs for $2500, the symptoms seemed to go away. However, within a month, both water pumps failed, and the car still experiences intermittent issues with turning on and off and dashboard lights. In conclusion, our Prius was reliable for about five years, but then it became a very expensive problem. We were disappointed with the dealer's lack of willingness to replace the battery within the 10-year warranty period. It is unfortunate because we used to think Toyota was a good company.

I purchased this car as a third vehicle for myself, mainly for commuting to work and running errands. Although I did not initially buy it for its appearance, I was hoping for good fuel economy. Unfortunately, this car did not meet my expectations as it only averages about 35 MPG for both highway and city driving, instead of the advertised 50 MPG+. I sympathize with those who use this car as their primary vehicle, as it can be uncomfortable after just half an hour of driving due to the hard seats and poor headroom. Additionally, it struggles to merge onto the freeway and keep up with traffic, and becomes quite noisy at speeds of 60 MPH or higher. Although the 'check engine' light came on, the dealer could not find any issues. Overall, I would recommend this car for short trips or for a teenager, but not for long commutes or as a primary vehicle.
