The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990 until 2000 over three different generations. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.

The car was based on Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante and retained their transverse mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive layout. The GTO's engines were naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers and were also available with active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.

Mitsubishi marketed a retractable hardtop variant, which were engineered and converted from coupé models in California by ASC, and sold as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder for model years 1993–1995. These were the first fully automated retractable hardtop marketed since the 1959 Ford Skyliner.

The JDM model took its name from the Galant GTO, a two-door hardtop coupé marketed by the company in the early 1970s, which in turn took its name from the Ferrari 250 GTO, short for Gran Turismo Omologata – "Omologata" signifying that it met motorsport homologation requirements.

Common 1999 Mitsubishi 3000gt problems

The Mitsubishi 3000GT, produced from 1990 to 2001, is known for its advanced technology and high-performance capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners should be aware of.

Transmission issues are a common problem in both the manual and automatic transmissions of the 3000GT. Manual transmissions can suffer from worn synchros or gear teeth, while automatic transmissions can have problems with the solenoids and torque converter. It's important to have any transmission issues diagnosed and repaired promptly to avoid further damage to the drivetrain.

Electrical issues are another common problem in the 3000GT, particularly with the engine and gearbox ECUs that control the complex systems. These components are known to fail and are located in difficult-to-reach areas, increasing labor costs. Suspension issues, such as worn-out suspension bushes and struts, can also be a problem in the 3000GT, leading to rattling and knocking noises.

Manual transmissions in the 3000GT can also suffer from notchiness in standard operation, and transfer cases and output shafts can fail. Regular fluid changes should be evident on the maintenance records. Automatic transmissions can be even more problematic, with issues such as hoses for the turbocharger and intercooler popping off, especially if a car has been chipped.

Engine internals in the 3000GT are generally reliable in standard form, but con-rods and valves can suffer if the boost is upped too much. There are many modified cars out there, and modified components can have detrimental effects on reliability.

Active aerodynamic systems on early cars do inevitably stop working, but they are repairable. However, few owners have gone to the trouble of doing so.

In summary, while the Mitsubishi 3000GT is a well-built car and can provide years of pleasurable motoring if maintained well, there are several common issues that owners should be aware of. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help keep the car running smoothly for years to come.

ALSO, WHEN I EXIT THE VEHICLE I NEED TO FEED THE BELT BACK INTO THE SLOT BECAUSE THE SPRING IS TOO WEAK TO PULL IT IN LIKE EVERY OTHER CAR I'VE OWNED. • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I DRIVE A 1999 MITSUBISHI 3000GT SL. THE SEAT BELTS IN THIS CAR DO NOT RETRACT CORRECTLY, THEY ACTUALLY ALLOW FOR TOO MUCH SLACK AND MOST OF THE TIME I HAVE TO MANUALLY DRAW THE SLACK BACK INTO THE MECHANISM. I FEEL THIS LACK OF FUNCTION OF MY SEAT BELTS PUTS ME AND MY PASSENGERS IN DANGER...I COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE FROM DAY 1 TO MY DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SEAT BELTS AND THAT THEY WOULD EVENTUALLY BREAK IN. OH, THEY'RE BROKEN IN ALRIGHT...BUSTED IS MORE LIKE IT. NO PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED OR REPAIRED AS OF YET AND I WOULD REALLY LIKE FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESSED. I HAVE TIRED OF MESSING WITH MY SEAT BELT, AND SINCE I AM GOING TO BE GETTING MARRIED I FEAR FOR MY FIANCEE. SHE ACTUALLY LIKES THE CAR QUITE A BIT, BUT SHE DOESN'T WEAR THE SEAT BELT BECAUSE SHE SAYS IT IS IRRELEVANT TO DO SO SINCE THEY DO NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. I PLAN ON HAVING A FAMILY IN THE NEAR FUTURE AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY I AM NOW COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I WILL BE GETTING MARRIED THIS DECEMBER OF 06 AND HOPE TO HAVE THIS SOLVED BY THEN. THANK YOU, ROBERT CAPETILLO. *JB

Negative 1999 Mitsubishi 3000gt car reviews

I just wanted to share that I recently purchased a 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT and I absolutely love it! It's a sports car that drives very smoothly and I enjoy the attention it gets from people as I drive down the street. I've actually owned a Mitsubishi before, an Eclipse that I drove for a long time, and I've always been very happy with my cars.

Positive 1999 Mitsubishi 3000gt car reviews

  1. Emerson Goodwin 2025-01-05

This car has a timeless design. You won't find many new cars that match its lines, both inside and out. The interior is beautifully done and it's very comfortable to drive around town and on long distances. It has the appearance of a world-class sports car and always catches eyes when it's clean and shiny. It's a shame Mitsubishi stopped making them in '99!

  2. Hillard Blanda 2024-09-11

The car is now 20 years old and has only required recommended maintenance. It has 116K miles on it and I just did the 2nd timing belt change (60k intervals). The old one still looked good but it wasn't worth taking a chance. The car still runs smoothly with no oil consumption. I have always used Rotella T6 and it rides silently with no rattles or other noises. There have been no surprises. The Pearl White paint and Black interior still look new. I added a larger rear sway bar and RE760 Potenzas on wider rims which really gave it grip and a quick turning upgrade. It's a great highway car and gets 26 to 28 mpg cruising. The manual transmission performs much better than our Stealth RT auto but otherwise it's the same car. It's a cool car that always gets looks and it seems to be a great long term keeper. The 90s produced some very solid and uncomplicated cars. It passes emissions and has never had a check engine light. The weak points are the window regulators. The Stealth driver's side broke at 90k so I took the 3000GT one out before it broke and reinforced the plastic roller part that gets brittle and greased it. It's working perfectly still.

  3. Gregorio Breitenberg 2024-08-04

I've only had my 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT for less than a week, but I am very pleased so far. It's Pearl Green and in mint condition with only 56,000 miles on it. It looks almost brand new inside and out. I'm happy with the fact that I can use 87 Octane with it, unlike the VR-4 or the SL models which require 91 Octane, especially with gas prices being so high. It's still pretty quick off the line anyway. If I had the VR-4, I would probably lose my license due to speeding tickets.

  4. Easter Leuschke 2024-06-02

This is actually my second 3000GT! My first one was a 1995 model, which I traded in back in 1998. I loved it so much that I got the same model and color - red. It's just so much fun to drive! Even with 127500 miles on it, it's still running great. The handling is really good, and I put on snow tires in the winter with no problems at all. I just really like it.

  5. Avery Moore 2024-05-25

It's a blast to drive! Very fast! The interior is great, but it's not the best in the snow. The wheels are very sensitive, and I've had to replace three of them in one year. Doing a wheel alignment is nasty! It's definitely worth the bucks, but not if you live where it snows.
