Common 1991 Mazda 929 problems
The Mazda 929, produced from 1987 to 1991, is a mid-size luxury sedan that aimed to compete with other Japanese and European luxury brands. While generally reliable, there are some common issues that owners should be aware of.
One common issue with the Mazda 929 is transmission problems, particularly in the Mazda 929 Wagon model. These issues can include slipping or failing to shift properly, and can be caused by a range of factors such as worn-out transmission fluid, a damaged torque converter, or a faulty transmission control module. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help prevent transmission issues.
Another common issue across all models of the Mazda 929 is electrical problems. These can include issues with the alternator or battery, as well as problems with the dashboard warning lights coming on unexpectedly. These issues can be caused by faulty wiring, a failing alternator, or a dead battery.
Suspension problems are also common in the Mazda 929, particularly with the front struts in the Mazda 929 Wagon model. These problems can cause a rough ride, uneven tire wear, and even steering issues. Suspension issues can be caused by worn-out shocks or struts, damaged bushings, or other wear and tear on the suspension components.
Engine problems are another common issue in the Mazda 929, particularly with overheating, loss of power, and stalling. These problems can be caused by a range of factors, including a malfunctioning thermostat, a clogged air filter, or a faulty fuel pump.
Fuel system issues are also common in the Mazda 929, particularly with difficulty starting the vehicle, poor fuel economy, and rough idling. These problems can be caused by a range of factors, including a clogged fuel filter, a faulty fuel injector, or a malfunctioning fuel pump.
Peeling paint is a common issue in the Mazda 929, particularly in the 1991 929S model. This issue can be caused by a range of factors, including exposure to the sun, harsh weather conditions, and poor quality paint.
Overall, while the Mazda 929 had its share of issues, many owners found it to be a reliable and practical vehicle. With proper maintenance and repairs, these issues can be addressed and the vehicle can continue to provide safe and reliable transportation for years to come.

The White Paint problem is the only downside of the vehicle.
Greyson Bartoletti 2024-08-25
Hi there! I bought this car as a second vehicle and it has been a great addition to my daily routine. I use it for my 48-mile roundtrip commute and it has been a reliable companion. I was lucky enough to purchase it from an elderly gentleman who had taken excellent care of it. The car was in fantastic shape and even had a fresh paint job! However, there was one issue that he was unable to resolve. The car had very rough shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd gear. I took it to a transmission specialist who quickly identified the problem as the throttle positioning sensor. After replacing it for about $200, the car runs smoothly without any rough shifts or smoke. I must say, the car has a very comfortable ride and it's perfect for me at 6'2

This car has excellent comfort and great handling. Additionally, the sun roof doubles as a trickle charger. The transmission shift RPMs adjust to how the driver normally drives.
Ralph Nitzsche 2024-03-17
This car is amazing! The ride is so comfortable and the space is great. It's been such a reliable vehicle and I'm sad to see it go. I've been searching for a new car, but it's been tough finding one that compares. I really think Mazda deserves more credit for creating such a fantastic car.

My white 88 929 was my first car and I had it for two years. It had 97000 miles when I bought it. I just traded it in on a newer Mazda Millenia, but I will definitely miss it. It was everything I wanted in a car and more. It was extremely comfortable for long trips. Although it may not have been the most stylish car for young people, anyone who ever rode in it appreciated its quality and design. Even though it wasn't new, it was still the nicest car in my high school parking lot, way better than a '99 Cavalier or '96 Jetta (honestly). However, towards the end, it started needing more oil than gas, and I had to say goodbye. But all good things must come to an end.
