2019 Nissan Kicks problems

The Nissan Kicks (Japanese: 日産・キックス, Hepburn: Nissan Kikkusu) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Nissan since 2016. The crossover was initially introduced as a concept car under the same name and was premiered at the 2014 São Paulo International Motor Show. Nissan claimed the concept is inspired by the streets of Brazil. Currently, the Kicks nameplate is used for two similar-looking vehicles, albeit being built on different platforms with different dimensions.

The V platform-based Kicks debuted in São Paulo, Brazil in mid-2016 with the P15 chassis code. The car was designed collaboratively by Nissan's design headquarters in Atsugi, Japan, Nissan Design America (NDA) in San Diego, California, and Nissan Design America Rio de Janeiro. The Kicks was then gradually rolling out across Latin America, then it entered the United States and Canada in 2018 to replace the Juke as the subcompact crossover offering in both countries.

The B0 platform-based Kicks was introduced in India in January 2019 with the D15 chassis code. The company stated the vehicle is built on the platform to reduce production costs. It is slightly larger than the V platform-based Kicks, and retained the same wheelbase as the first-generation Dacia Duster and the B0 platform-based Renault Captur. The D15 Kicks ceased production in 2023.

The second-generation Kicks was introduced for the North American market in March 2024.

Common 2019 Nissan Kicks problems

The 2019 Nissan Kicks has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most widespread issues is the A/C system not blowing cold air, which is usually caused by an issue with the A/C compressor. This problem has been reported within the first 1,500 miles and can cost over $1,100 to fix if the vehicle is out of warranty.

Another common problem is the radar system not working, which is usually caused by a sensor or software issue. If it’s a software issue, then simply updating the software can fix it, costing under $100. However, if it’s a sensor issue and the vehicle is out of warranty, then it can cost around $750 to replace. This problem has been reported at around 500 miles.

Throttle body issues have also been reported by some 2019 Kicks owners at roughly 60,000 miles, but it’s not a common complaint. The throttle body becomes clogged and has to be replaced to fix the issue, which can cost around $1,200, depending on local labor rates.

In addition to these issues, there have been complaints about the electrical system, engine, service brakes, and forward collision warning system.

There is only one recall on the 2019 Nissan Kicks, which covers the backup camera not displaying an image on the screen. Nissan will update the backup camera software for free on affected models to fix the problem.

In summary, the 2019 Nissan Kicks has several common problems, including issues with the A/C system, radar system, and throttle body. These issues can be expensive to fix, especially if the vehicle is out of warranty. It is important for owners to be aware of these issues and to address them promptly to avoid further damage or safety risks.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • VIN: 3N1CP5CU6KL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2018 Nissan kicks stalled several times, twice while at a stop light and once while driving. There was no warning or any indicators letting me know that the vehicle stalled. The two times at the light I was only able to notice because I couldn’t get the car to go while pressing the gas. The time I was driving the car suddenly stalled and slowed down and the steering wheel became stiff. I had to place it in neutral and pull over. I took my car to the manufacturer where I bought the car and explained it to them. It stalled in them as well but they couldn’t find a reason for it and told me that it could be my key fob cover and the battery. We changed the battery on 08/07/24 and it just stalled again today at a stop light on 08/08/24. This rules out the key and fob and cover so it must be the something with the transmission or engine. Either way, it becomes unsafe especially while it stalls while driving.

This has been a recurring issue since 2021 with no intention by Nissan to fix it.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Symptoms: *Automatic Emergency Braking (3 occasions) *Slip Indicator (3 occasions) *Check Engine -Code P0101 (Been on 4 weeks so far) Road Condition: *Dry sunny days AEB and Slip Indicator lights randomly came on 3 different times. On the 3rd time, Check Engine light came on together and it's been on ever since. AEB and Slip lights go away after the car is turned off. Having AEB and Slip lights on makes the car drive like it is on the lower gear and the engine shut off at every red light. I started noticing the smell of excess gasoline fume especially when the car is moving but not accelerating, meaning that when my foot is off the gas pedal. Because P0101 indicates MAF sensor malfunction, I replaced with a Hitachi-made MAF sensor. For some strange reason, the car lost battery power so I ended up replacing battery at the same time. Unfortunately, the Check Engine Light is still on.

2019 Nissan Kicks recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2019 Nissan Kicks.

2019-09-12
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
  • Consequence: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

Negative 2019 Nissan Kicks car reviews

  1. Giovani Abernathy 2024-11-21

I bought a Juke in 2011 and absolutely love everything about it. When Nissan announced that they were discontinuing the Juke, I was heartbroken. Then they announced the Kick, and I thought, 'hey, it's the 'new' Juke.' Unfortunately, that was not to be. However, there are a lot of good things about the Kick. I really like the aesthetics of the design, and it is very reasonably priced. It also has good gas mileage and decent cargo space for a car of this size. Additionally, it has a number of nice bells-and-whistles that aren't ridiculously expensive. That being said, I was disappointed to find out that the Kick doesn't have an optional AWD package. While it may not be necessary for those living in warmer climates, for those of us who experience snow, ice, and heavy rains, AWD is essential. It is the most important reason I looked at crossovers to begin with. It's a shame that Nissan didn't include this option, as it may turn away 40-50% of the potential market for a vehicle of this kind. Another issue I have with the Kick is that it is significantly underpowered compared to the Juke. This is also a big issue for me, as I got 30+ mpg in stop and go DC driving for 8 years with my 188hp 1.6 litre turbo. The slightly anemic Kick drivetrain just doesn't provide the same performance on the road.

  2. Giovanni Schmitt 2024-11-12

When I first saw the car, I was in awe. After having it for two weeks, I am noticing things that concern me. The gas mileage is okay since I drive 200 miles a day, so I average a fill-up every three days. The seats are comfortable, and it has more room than my Yaris. However, there are a few issues. The seatbelt doesn't chime to let you know when you have it on, and there is no icon to indicate when the car is warming up. Unless I am not looking in the right spots, I have yet to see or hear them. Additionally, you can lock the door with the car being on, which is really bad since I have a 4-year-old. It beeps when you are more than 100 feet away from another car because it thinks you are going to crash. Overall, there are some pros and cons, but we will see how it goes.

  3. Hoyt Daugherty 2024-11-12

It seems like you could benefit from a more efficient heater!

  4. Floyd Bergstrom 2024-11-04

I strongly advise against trading in a 2015 Nissan Altima for a Kicks. The Kicks is not as comfortable to ride in, has poor acceleration, and although it has good gas mileage, it requires more frequent refueling. It is unfortunate that the Kicks does not live up to expectations, especially when compared to a car that is four years older. Overall, I do not recommend the Kicks with a rating of 0/10.

  5. Bradly Christiansen 2024-10-28

Overall, I found this vehicle to be fine. It got me from point A to point B without any issues, and it has some really cool features and accessories for a moderately priced vehicle. However, it didn't quite meet my needs. I bought it in a hurry after my previous vehicle was totaled (not my fault), and while Nissan is great for many things in the vehicle world, the Kicks model needs some tweaks. For starters, I wouldn't believe the gas mileage estimates - my Kicks only averaged around 23 city and 26 highway, and with a 10-gallon tank, the range just wasn't acceptable for me. I found myself filling up a lot more often than I was used to. Also, with only 122hp, this car doesn't have much pick-up-and-go. It's a slow crawl to speed, so you can't punch it to get into a small opening on the freeway. This car will get you to speed, but it takes its sweet time doing it. I got the mid-range model with the upgraded sound system, and it was worth it. However, the speaker box in the back isn't placed well and takes up 25% of your storage space, making for awkward loading and difficult removal when you need a flat surface. The electronic display and touch screen up front need some tweaking too, as the screen pops on and off and gets frozen easily. The dealership downloaded a patch, but it didn't do any good. Also, the collision alert system is very fragile and will come loose with any impact. I got tapped in a parking lot, and my front sensor was dislodged and had to be reset at the dealer. Overall, it's a good vehicle, just not for me. I traded it in 12 months after purchase for a vehicle I love.

Positive 2019 Nissan Kicks car reviews

  1. Rodger Kling 2024-10-08

I'm a senior citizen and I didn't want a bulky SUV, so I downsized to my Kicks. It's just right and has style and get up and go when I need it. It's perfect!

  2. Celestino Howell 2024-09-21

I purchased this vehicle as a cheap runabout during the pandemic. My old car's warranty was up and I wasn't commuting to work anymore. I found what seemed to be the deal of the decade at my local dealership on an SV model. I used to drive a high-end vehicle with all the bells and whistles - it even parked itself, which was a nice trick. I only used it once, though! The Kicks gets mixed reviews that say it's gutless, but I have to say that it's pretty peppy. I can even cruise down a highway at 140kmh without noticing the speed creep up! I have to floor it a bit more than a 3L V6 on the onramp, but to be fair, it's not a struggle or anything. The interior is not plush, but the more I live with it, the more I like its utility. It feels way nicer than the Ford high-end vehicle I recently sat in when I got picked up by a friend. Nothing about it is spectacular, but I can't find anything that really annoys me. I paid the same price for this car after tax all-in than most people pay leasing the lowest spec Acura you can buy for 14 months at .99% apr (I did the math!). The CVT is new to me, but honestly, I didn't notice. It doesn't make funny noises, and they built in an electronic function so that you feel a pseudo shift. The cargo space is incredible when you consider the overall dimensions of the car. This is a bit rambling, I suppose, but my take on it is that the Kicks is fun to drive. It doesn't feel cheap, as the reviewers seem to love to point out. It's great on gas, and it sits you higher than a sedan but doesn't make you feel like you are driving a truck. I live in Canada, and we get quite a lot of snow. All these people whimpering about AWD really grind my gears. AWD does not help with anything else than starting traction. A decent set of tires, and you are golden!

  3. Melvin Auer 2024-08-22

I hope you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice with the copper color and blacktop. With so many features and a warranty, it's definitely a steal at $17,500 for only 231 miles. Congratulations on your purchase!

  4. Keven Schulist 2024-03-18

I love this car! It's amazing how it has all the bells and whistles of a luxury vehicle, but in just the right size small SUV. The gas mileage is great, and it's so comfortable to drive. Plus, there are so many features to enjoy! The surround viewing is a definite plus, and the sound system is fantastic. And let's not forget about car play - it's a game changer!

  5. Norbert Kihn 2024-03-11

Overall, you have a great car that accelerates well on the highway for passing slower vehicles. However, the instrument panel can be difficult to read on sunny days, making it hard to use the prompts. Additionally, the backup camera is useless on sunny days as the screen is unreadable. Although your car came with all-season radial tires, they are not suitable for snowy conditions. Consider getting snow tires for next winter.
