The Continental Mark V is a personal luxury coupe marketed in North America by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company for model years 1977–1979, as the fourth generation of the Mark series. At 230 inches (5.8 m) in length, it was the longest two-door coupe Ford has marketed.

The Mark Vs were assembled alongside the Lincoln Continental at Wixom Assembly (1957–2007). For 1980, the Mark V was replaced by the Continental Mark VI, significantly reduced in exterior dimensions.

Chassis

The Continental Mark V shares its chassis with its predecessor, the Continental Mark IV, with curb weight reduced from 5000 to 4600 pounds.

In the interest of fuel economy, the 1977 Continental Mark V was equipped with a 400 cubic-inch V8. This engine was shared with the Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar and Ford LTD/Mercury Marquis. Outside of California, the 460 V8 remained available as an option. In 1979, the dual-exhaust version of the 400 was discontinued; the 460 was discontinued in the Mark V (and in all Lincolns) by 1980.

The Ford C6 three-speed automatic was the only transmission offered.

Common 1984 Lincoln Mark v problems

The Lincoln Mark V, produced from 1977 to 1979, was a popular personal luxury coupe that faced some common problems, as reported by its owners. This issue could be due to a faulty electrical switch or a problem with the ignition system itself.

Another possible cause of engine stalling is a leaking intake manifold, which could lead to a drop in idle speed and eventual stalling, particularly when the engine gets hot. In some cases, the issue might be intermittent, making it challenging to diagnose and repair.

Vapor lock was also a common problem in the Lincoln Mark V, particularly in hot weather or during prolonged periods of engine operation. Vapor lock occurs when fuel vaporizes in the fuel line, causing a blockage that prevents fuel from reaching the engine. This issue could be exacerbated by the use of low-quality fuel or a malfunctioning fuel pump.

In addition to engine issues, the Lincoln Mark V also had some problems with its electrical system. For example, the electrical switch, which connects to the key cylinder with a rod, was prone to overheating and coming apart, particularly in the 1980s. This issue could lead to intermittent electrical problems, including issues with the ignition system and other electrical components.

Finally, the Lincoln Mark V was known for its fuel efficiency issues, which were a significant concern for many owners. The car's large size and powerful engine contributed to its poor fuel economy, making it an expensive vehicle to operate, particularly during periods of high gas prices.

In summary, the Lincoln Mark V had several common problems, including engine stalling, vapor lock, electrical issues, and poor fuel efficiency. While these issues could be frustrating for owners, they were relatively common for cars of this era and could often be addressed with routine maintenance and repairs.
