The Continental Mark V is a personal luxury coupe marketed in North America by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company for model years 1977–1979, as the fourth generation of the Mark series. At 230 inches (5.8 m) in length, it was the longest two-door coupe Ford has marketed.

The Mark Vs were assembled alongside the Lincoln Continental at Wixom Assembly (1957–2007). For 1980, the Mark V was replaced by the Continental Mark VI, significantly reduced in exterior dimensions.

Chassis

The Continental Mark V shares its chassis with its predecessor, the Continental Mark IV, with curb weight reduced from 5000 to 4600 pounds.

In the interest of fuel economy, the 1977 Continental Mark V was equipped with a 400 cubic-inch V8. This engine was shared with the Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar and Ford LTD/Mercury Marquis. Outside of California, the 460 V8 remained available as an option. In 1979, the dual-exhaust version of the 400 was discontinued; the 460 was discontinued in the Mark V (and in all Lincolns) by 1980.

The Ford C6 three-speed automatic was the only transmission offered.

Common 1985 Lincoln Mark v problems

The Lincoln Mark V 1985 had several common problems reported by owners:

  • Carburetor Problems: Owners of the 1977 Lincoln Mark V with the 460 engine faced carburetor issues. Complaints included flooding the engine despite adjustments, indicating potential carburetor malfunctions.
  • Size and Handling: Some owners found the Lincoln Mark V to be too large for the era, making it challenging for city driving and parking, especially with its long and heavy doors. The size and weight of the car posed practical difficulties for everyday use.
  • Design Changes: The transition from the Mark VI to the Mark VII involved significant design changes, including the introduction of new flush headlamps and the all-new LSC model. While these changes were generally well-received, there were adjustments and adaptations required due to the updated styling and features.
  • Fuel Efficiency: With changing times and fuel economy concerns, the shift from larger engines like the 400 and 460 cid to smaller engines like the 302 and 351 cid in the Mark VI raised issues related to power and fuel efficiency. The downsizing of engines aimed to address fuel economy needs but may have impacted performance for some owners.

These reported problems highlight various challenges faced by owners of the Lincoln Mark V 1985, ranging from technical issues with components like the carburetor and air suspension to practical concerns related to the car's size and handling characteristics.
