1992 Oldsmobile Toronado problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Toronado is a personal luxury car manufactured and marketed by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors from 1966 to 1992 over four generations. The Toronado was noted for its transaxle version of GM's Turbo-Hydramatic transmission, making it the first U.S.-produced front-wheel drive automobile since the demise of the Cord 810/812 in 1937.

The Toronado used the GM E platform introduced by the rear-wheel drive Buick Riviera in 1963 and adopted for the front-wheel drive 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. The three models shared the E platform for most of the Toronado's 26-year history.

The name "Toronado" had no prior meaning and was originally selected for a 1963 Chevrolet show car.

Common 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado problems

The 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado is a front-wheel-drive luxury coupe powered by a Buick 3.8L V6 engine or the later 3800 series 1 V6, which is known for its power and long-term reliability

. However, like any other vehicle, the Toronado has its share of quirks and problems.

One common problem with the 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado is a faulty cam sensor, which can cause rough idling, a lack of power, poor gas mileage, and the check engine light to come on

. The cam sensor is responsible for monitoring the engine's RPM and providing feedback to the vehicle's computer. When the sensor fails, it can cause the engine to run poorly, and the only way to fix the problem is to replace the sensor.

Another issue with the 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado is intermittent failure, which can be caused by a faulty ignition module or a problem with the vehicle's security system. The ignition module is responsible for providing power to the spark plugs, and if it fails, the vehicle may not start or may stall while driving. A problem with the security system can also prevent the vehicle from starting, and the only way to fix the problem is to have the system reset or repaired.

The 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado is also known for having issues with the climate control system, which can cause the air conditioning to stop working or the heater to blow cold air

. The climate control system is controlled by a touch screen interface, and if the system fails, it can be difficult to diagnose and repair.

Other common problems with the 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado include issues with the fuel pump, which can cause the vehicle to stall or have trouble starting, and problems with the transmission, which can cause the vehicle to shift roughly or not shift at all.

In summary, the 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado is a reliable vehicle, but like any other car, it has its share of quirks and problems. Common issues include faulty cam sensors, intermittent failure, climate control system problems, fuel pump issues, and transmission problems. If you own a 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado and are experiencing any of these issues, it's important to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by a certified mechanic to ensure that it remains safe and reliable.

Positive 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado car reviews

You made a great choice buying this car two years ago with only 32K miles on it. It was previously owned by two lovely elderly sisters who upgraded to a convertible and traded in the Toronado. This car has been a joy to drive, with good gas mileage, extreme comfort, and a unique look. Maintenance has been a breeze, with only minor issues related to age rather than poor design. The electronic dash, tires, a few sensors on the motor, and hood struts were the only major things that needed replacing.

  2. Lee Lebsack 2025-04-28

I bought the car with 104,000 miles and it now has 195,000. The only issue I ever had was when the a/c compressor froze and had to be replaced. However, the car still runs perfectly and I plan on keeping it. Recently, I also purchased a 1992 Trofeo with 94,000 miles, just so that I can have another one of these great cars while they're still available. If you happen to come across one, I highly recommend buying it. 1992 was the last year they were made.

  3. Chet Daniel 2025-04-26

I've been driving my Toro pretty hard over the past five years. It's even been banged up thrice. Yet it never stops being a fantastic car for me. Although the inside is a bit worn, it's still as comfortable as a lazyboy. The exterior looks brand new, even though it's ten years old. It has been 100% reliable for me and performs very well. The car will let you know if anything is wrong. Big thumbs up!

  4. Gregory Raynor 2025-04-08

I've been dreaming of owning one of these cars since they were first introduced in 1989-90. It's the kind of car that makes people stop and ask, 'What is that?' and I absolutely love it. The touchscreen computer is amazing and it glides so smoothly down the highway. The only downside is that it was built 17 years ago and its fuel economy isn't great compared to today's prices. Nevertheless, it still looks great and the leather is still in good condition. If you're a true American car enthusiast like me, you might want to consider owning a TROFEO.

  5. Gust Larkin 2025-01-10

I had a 1990 Toronado that I loved for about 5 years until the frame rotted. Unfortunately, living in the northeast rust belt meant I had to let it go. However, 11 years ago, I noticed a Trofeo sitting in a driveway that had been there for a long time. I left a note asking if it was for sale and received an answer a year later that I could have it for the price of the transmission rebuild he had done on it 10 years before - $1000. I bought it, replaced the headliner, fuel pump, and all fluids. Now it runs excellently and people keep asking me who made it and what year it is! I was lucky enough to find the VIC option from a car I found in the junkyard and replaced the base model radio and heater controls with it. I'm still driving it today, albeit only on nice summer days.
