2021 Lincoln Aviator problems
The Lincoln Aviator is a mid-size, three-row luxury SUV manufactured and marketed under the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company — and now in its second generation, with a hiatus from 2006 to 2020.
The first generation Aviator was manufactured for 2003–2005 model years as a rebadged variant of the third generation Ford Explorer — and assembled at the now-closed St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood, Missouri, alongside the Explorer and Mountaineer.
For the 2020 model year, Lincoln reintroduced the Aviator as a badge engineered variant of the sixth generation Ford Explorer manufactured at Chicago Assembly and offered with a plug-in hybrid variant.

Common 2021 Lincoln Aviator problems
The 2021 Lincoln Aviator has been subject to a recall due to a potential issue with the engine. The recall affects 1405 vehicles, including the 2020-2021 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator. The issue is related to the right-hand motor mount fasteners, which may have been incorrectly tightened during the manufacturing process. Over time, these fasteners may loosen, causing motor vibration that could lead to the axle disconnecting from the engine. This could result in a loss of power, increasing the risk of a crash. Ford, the manufacturer of the Lincoln Aviator, will notify owners of affected vehicles, and dealers will replace the right-hand motor mount fasteners free of charge.
In addition to the recall, there have been other reported issues with the 2021 Lincoln Aviator. Consumer Reports predicts that the Aviator will be less reliable than other new cars, based on limited data from the Aviator and the Lincoln brand scores. The site also states that reactivation is required to access the full review and ratings for the Aviator, as well as over 8,500 other products and services.
Lemberg Law, a law firm specializing in lemon law cases, has reported issues with the engine and powertrain of the 2021 Lincoln Aviator. The firm offers legal assistance to help determine if a vehicle is a lemon, which is defined as a car with significant defects that impair its use, value, or safety.
Kelley Blue Book, a well-known resource for car valuations and reviews, has identified a problem with the tires of the 2021 Lincoln Aviator. The site states that a light on the dashboard may indicate an issue with the tires, such as low or high air pressure, a slow leak, or a flat tire.
In summary, the 2021 Lincoln Aviator has been subject to a recall due to a potential issue with the engine, and there have been reports of other problems with the engine, powertrain, and tires. Consumer Reports predicts that the Aviator will be less reliable than other new cars, and Lemberg Law offers legal assistance for those who believe their vehicle may be a lemon. Kelley Blue Book has identified a problem with the tires that could cause a dashboard light to illuminate.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-03
- VIN: 5LM5J6XC2MG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I have been reporting an issue for over two years with multiple dealerships regarding a sulphur and other strong exhaust smell. This Sulphur smell is most problematic and occurs most often at least one per day. This issue started off intermittently but is now occurring as increase frequencies. The Lincoln dealerships tell me this is normal. I am not sure what system is exactly failing as no codes are being presented (so says the dealership. This smell is so strong and can be easily smelled in the car but even more once opening the doors or hatchback. I have children that breath this air as well as myself. Often children (my own as well as school friends for which we give rides to) complain about this smell and it is very noxious in nature. This issue has been reported to the dealership MULTIPLE times (Actually reported to two dealerships). Often, I am being told this is "normal" due to gas used. In beginning they would not even log my concern, but this past year I have been submitting online. Always no code so no issue. No other troubleshooting is done. I have even requested additional basic troubleshooting data and not received. This is not a normal smell, as the Lincoln dealership(s) suggest. This smell makes us feel unpleasant. This smell is strong and is hazardous to the health of my family and others. I need Ford to take this issue seriously. Symptoms experienced indicate there is likely a problem with the catalytic converter and they are not addressing.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-21
- VIN: 5LM5J9XC7MG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine of my 2021 Lincoln Aviator with only 79,403 miles has failed, leaving myself and my family stranded on the side of a very busy interstate in another state far from home. There were absolutely no warnings given before the engine acted as if it had a significant loss of power. Shortly afterwards, very heavy and foul-smelling smoke started coming out of the tail pipe. Had the vehicle transported to a local shop to my home. The car will start and immediately start smoking and running like crap. When you put it in gear it will barely move on it's own power.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-13
- VIN: 5LM5J7WC0MG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: UNKNOWN ON several occasions the vehicle would just shut off. Another occasion while getting on the freeway I pressed the accelerator pedal and the car pumped the brakes, there was no one in front of me or on side of me upon entering the freeway. Another incident I was in the fast lane on the freeway and the vehicle just shut off Thank goodness the fast lane had a place where I could pull over and and restart the vehicle. Also where the vehicle pumped the brakes, that happened on several occasions. Another thing the vehicle shut of again in the middle of the street. I couldn't put the car in neutral the steering was locked. All of incidents were extremely dangerous. The vehicle has been in the dealership shop twice now and I mentioned it to them on both occasions. And I was told it was the battery. That starts the engine not battery for the eclectic system. I was also told that they did diagnostic check of the software system and there were no systems alerts it was only showing the battery. Now I now that when you drive a vehicle the engine battery charges, plus the vehicle in a 2021 with only 35,000 miles on it.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
- VIN: 5LM5J7XC4MG
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Hello. My name is [XXX] and I have a potentially serious issue with my car and Lincoln refuses to look into it. The short story : When you press the brakes moderately or harder (as if stopping for a yellow light) it sounds like you’ve run over a brick or hit a BIG pothole. It has been in 6 times and to 3 dealerships and they all say it is normal for Aviators and Explorers. I have owned an auto repair shop for 12 years and my guys fix 2000 cars per year. I am an ASE master certified mechanic and I can assure anyone that there is nothing normal about this bang. They tell me they drive a like vehicle and if it also makes noise, there is nothing they can do. I have reached out to Lincoln Concierge multiple times and they tell me they will do nothing if a like vehicle also does it. I think of the 2019 Pacifica that the lower ball joint pinch bolts comes out and folds the wheel under the vehicle. I have had 3 service managers drive the car and they have all told me that it sounds really bad and abnormal. I have been told by all of those managers that Lincoln enforces not doing any further diagnostics or repairs if they all do it. I did drive a 2023 Aviator with a service advisor and it did not make the same noise mine does. You can actually feel the noise in the steering wheel. I have pleaded with them to investigate the issue and at least let me speak with a supervisor about it but they refuse. I have asked the dealers to put a set of chassis ears on the suspension to pinpoint the sound and they say Lincoln will not let them. The vehicle has 33k on it and is still under full factory and extended CPO warranty. Can you guys look into this issue before someone gets hurt ? Thanks for reading INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-04
- VIN: 5LM5J7WC5MG
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: It has been almost a half year and still no solution for backup camera that shows blue screen. It is happening more and more. It is a big vehicle (and expensive one) . When backing up, one is at a great disadvantage with just a blue screen. You cannot see people or other objects. Car dealership says they do not know when it will be rectified. I think Ford/Lincoln is dragging their feet, using COVID as an excuse.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-09
- VIN: 5LMYJ8XY0MN
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Front passenger tire reporting normal pressure blew out the sidewalk while driving 50th on dry pavement. Rim shows no damage. Tires hardly worn.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
- VIN: 5LM5J7XC7MG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Powertrain malfunctioning. The vehicle has had multiple neutral out (not reacting) when the accelerator is applied. Occurring in the middle of an intersection 3 times. Stuck in the middle of the intersection has resulted in two (2) cases of almost being hit by an oncoming vehicle. Pulling into traffic from a stop sign and losing the accelerator another time resulting in traffic breaking hard to avoid an accident. Recently while in cruise control on the highway driving 79 MPH, the vehicle suddenly shifted into what had to be the lowest gear lunging passengers forward and slowing to an unacceptable speed for the highway. Almost initiating being hit from the rear by a tractor trailer and just making it off of the shoulder to safety. This may be the result of service bulletins 22-2145 or SSM 50529. The dealer has stated they cannot reproduce the problems but are aware of the issues and Service Bulletins have been released. No warning lamps have come on when these issues have occurred. Vehicle has been into dealership multiple times. Service Managers had said they are working with Lincoln Engineers to remedy the problem. So far a separator plate and a valve has been replaced, which has not resolved the problem This happens intermittently, but when it does it causes what could be a severe safety issue. Currently the vehicle is in the dealership with no remedy, and has went in if for this issue multiple times. This has been going on for the past six (6) months.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-11
- VIN: 5LM5J9XC8MG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Three times, battery was dead -- twice within 24 hours of bringing the car home from the dealer. We only drive the car home from the dealer, then the next day the battery is dead again. The dealer said they replaced the battery and fixed an electrical recall, and they said they checked for electrical draw, but the problem is still there. Yesterday, they said they contacted Lincoln corporate because they didn't know how to fix it. It is dead again this morning. We get messages on our phone app about the anti-lock bake system, hill start assist warning, charge system fault, pre-collision assist, security system, etc. And the alarm goes off. Please see if this is a common issue? It is a Black Label, so they are "fixing" it for free, but it really isn't being fixed.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
- VIN: 5LM5J7XC4MG
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Driving this vehicle in snow and ice collects in my wheel wells because of the material used in them. It is felt like heavily textured that the snow and ice sticks to like glue. So, in lots of snow and slush on the road it quickly collects to its limit of area between tire and wheel well and then makes turning or steering the car difficult. It does NOT slide off easily even when going to the car wash to try and clean it off. Or by letting it sit in the sun to melt does not help either for a very long amount of time. So, in other words……I live in the foothills of Colorado where it does snow a fair bit and so, it quickly turns my SUV into an unsafe vehicle to drive or steer when faced with snow and slush on the roads. I bought this vehicle in Colorado.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-23
- VIN: 5LM5J7XC8MG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: In regards to my brand new 2021 Lincoln Aviator Reserve (4181 miles): 2.23.22- Driving home on a very narrow, winding road when my car unexpectedly started to vibrate/shake. There were no alerts and no warning lights that came on. Fortunately, I was coming up on one of the very few turnouts available. As I started to pull over the car completely shut off (completely died). Luckily, I made it off of the road or I would have been stuck in the middle of the road on a blind corner as the car would not restart. It just kept displaying "Full Accessory Power Active" but would not do anything. The car was towed back to the dealership who informed me the next day that the engine had completely seized and they would have to replace the engine. One of the piston rods was bent to a 90 degree angle. I got it back on a Saturday afternoon(3.12.22), drove home from work, took my kids to/from school Monday, then drove to work Tuesday morning. On my way to work (which is only 3 miles from home) my car started to vibrate again but I was able to turn off the highway onto a side road and the vibrating stopped. Thankfully, it did not die in the middle of the highway and cause an accident. I continued on down the street and again the vibrating started. As I pulled up to a stop sign the car completely died and would not start. I waited a few moments and tried again and it started. I was able to make it the last less than quarter of a mile to work while it vibrated then died yet again as I pulled into my parking spot. My fiancé came later in the day and started the car. It was making a loud knocking noise so we shut if off and called dealer again. It was towed back for another new engine. As of today, they are still working on "repairing" the brand new death trap. Lincoln doesn't seem to think it's a big deal and thinks the second new engine will fix the issue. Hopefully it doesn't kill me first. This is worth investigating. Like I said, this car is a death trap.

I have been eyeing the Aviator for over a year and I was concerned about buying a first year car. However, I waited for the second model year and so far the car has been great. I feel that it is a fantastic American-made vehicle! Let's support American jobs, American companies, and the American economy!

Powerful engine matched perfectly with the transmission to provide terrific performance for all types of driving. I'm glad to hear that you haven't experienced any quality issues. The interior is gorgeous and comfortable, and I'm happy to hear that you find the information system intuitive and easy to navigate. It's a shame that CDs are becoming less common, but it's great that you were able to find a solution that works for you by purchasing a CD player from Amazon that syncs perfectly with the audio system and sounds great.

I love my 2021 black label! It has exceeded all of our expectations. The SUV is comfortable, quiet, and has a ton of power. The fit and finish are top notch, and it's great to see Lincoln coming back strong into the luxury segment. We tow our 3800lb camper with it, and it feels like our camper isn't even there. It's the perfect blend of comfort, power, and design. They really hit it out of the park with this one! Even friends and family who prefer European luxury vehicles are pleasantly surprised. We've had it for over 6 months now, taken it on two 1400 mile road trips, and it still tows our camper with ease. The SUV is definitely a head turner!

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my recent experience with the vehicle I purchased from your dealership. While I am enjoying the car, I did notice that there was an accident that was not disclosed in the carfax report. If I had known about this beforehand, I would not have considered this vehicle. I have noticed some minor issues with the hood alignment and a missing emblem on the front, which I have brought to the attention of AutoNation. I am hopeful that they will be able to address these concerns, but if not, I understand that there are consumer fraud protections in place for the next 30 days. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I owned an Aviator Reserve for 18 months and absolutely loved it. The ride was smooth, the trim was luxurious, and the electronics were top-notch. However, I did encounter a major issue that ultimately led me to trade it in. The door opening mechanism on the inside of each door is electric, which can be problematic in the event of an electrical failure. Unfortunately, only the driver's door has a mechanical override release. This means that in the event of an accident where the electrical system is compromised and the driver is unable to open the door, passengers may have difficulty escaping. It's important to note that the release is located in the lower front corner of the driver's door, so passengers would need to move the driver to access it. This could be especially challenging for older individuals or those with mobility issues. I personally experienced this issue when the driver's door failed to open one morning. It took over five weeks for Lincoln to fix the problem, which made me realize that my son was right when he warned me that it could be a fire hazard. Despite this issue, I still gave the car two stars because it was an absolute joy to drive. If you do decide to purchase one, I would recommend keeping hammers in the car for emergency situations.

You won't believe what happened to me! I recently got a brand new Lincoln Aviator, but unfortunately, it broke down on the side of the road in less than two weeks. I had to tow it to the nearest dealer, which was a bit of a hassle, but I managed to find a tow truck in just 10 minutes! After having it checked, I was told that the engine had catastrophically failed and that it needed to be replaced. I'm currently in the process of working with Lincoln to get a new car, as I don't want to end up with a lemon for $100k. It's been a bit of a challenge, but I'm hopeful that we'll be able to come to a resolution soon.

I am currently in a dispute with Lincoln regarding my 2021 Lincoln Aviator Reserve, which experienced a catastrophic engine failure after only 5 months and 5300 miles. I am confident in my position and am seeking a resolution that includes a replacement vehicle.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2021 used Aviator with 20k miles. Unfortunately, after six months of ownership, I decided to trade it in for a Jeep Grand Cherokee. During my brief ownership, I experienced some issues with the car, such as phantom braking while reversing out of my garage or in the office garage, which was really concerning. Additionally, the display sometimes went completely dead. Although the dealership swapped the display, they were unable to fix the severe door rattle and suggested I create a ticket with Ford. Ultimately, I found the experience to be quite frustrating for a so-called 'luxury car'.

The 2021 Aviator with 32,000 miles has experienced some technical issues. Unfortunately, the Sync system has not been functioning properly and the dealer has been unable to resolve the issue. Additionally, there have been some concerns with the front windows rattling, which have been brought to the dealer's attention multiple times without a solution. The vehicle has been in for service for the past 8 days, and during this time, it was discovered that the VCT selenoids need to be replaced. Although this may seem daunting, the motor will be removed to replace them. There was also a drone sound at highway speeds, which was found to be caused by a faulty rear end that needs to be replaced. While this part is currently on back order, we are working diligently to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your patience. Please rest assured that we will do everything in our power to ensure that you are satisfied with the final outcome.
