The Lexus GX (Japanese: レクサス・GX, Hepburn: Rekusasu GX) is a mid/full-size luxury SUV sold in North American and Eurasian markets by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. The GX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, from which it derives its off-road capability. Lexus introduced the first generation, known as the GX 470 in 2002, and subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup. A full-time four-wheel drive system is standard with low-range gearing. The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the GX 470 was the same as used on the larger LX 470. The firm next introduced the second-generation model in 2009, badged GX 460 to reflect the switch to a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus later released a lower displacement GX 400 in 2012 for the Chinese market, with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. The third-generation model introduced in 2023 uses the GX 550 moniker with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine and GX 550h with a turbocharged hybrid electric 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

As of 2024, the GX is positioned between the larger LX or TX and the smaller RX. Though it is thought the GX has always been larger than the RX, from 2015 to 2022, the RX is slightly longer and slightly wider than the GX and therefore the GX was considered smaller. All GX production has occurred at the Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the export-minded Toyota 4Runner.

Some countries classify the GX as a full-size vehicle (e.g., Australia), while some classify it as a mid-size vehicle (e.g., US), depending on local regulations.

Common 2004 Lexus Gx 470 problems

The Lexus GX 470 is a luxury crossover that combines performance and luxury, making it popular among many drivers. However, older models with high mileage often experience problems with the air suspension system. The most common issues include sensor failure, control panel faults, air compressor failure, air spring failure, airbag damage, and valve block failure. These problems can affect the vehicle's ride height, cause the car to sag in the rear or lean to one side, and even trigger a suspension warning light. Sensor failure is one of the leading causes of air suspension problems in the Lexus GX 470. The vehicle has sensors in each wheel that gather information and send it to the electronic control unit. Damage to these sensors can affect the automatic height monitoring system, leading to an uncomfortable ride and potential safety risks. Control panel faults can also significantly impact the performance of the air suspension system. The control panel or control module is the air suspension system's "brain," responsible for giving drivers a comfortable driving experience. When the control panel fails, the air suspension cannot perform optimally, leading to ride height issues and other problems. Air compressor failure is another common issue in the Lexus GX 470. The air compressor generates pressurized air and pumps it through the springs, elevating the vehicle. These compressors tend to wear out over time, reducing the amount and intensity of air produced. This can lead to problems with the vehicle's ride height and overall suspension performance. Air spring failure is also a common problem in the Lexus GX 470. Air springs are rubber bellows that inflate and deflate depending on the amount and intensity of air, causing the vehicle to rise and drop. Their constant up-and-down motion can cause them to weaken over time, leading to a loss of strength and an inability to lift properly, especially when the vehicle is loaded to maximum capacity. Airbag damage is another issue that can affect the Lexus GX 470's air suspension system. The airbag stores the air generated by the air compressors and sends it to the control module. When dry rot and punctures cause it to leak or burst, the air volume drops, so there's not enough air to lift the SUV. This can lead to problems with the vehicle's ride height and overall suspension performance. Valve block failure is the final common issue affecting the Lexus GX 470's air suspension system. The valve block distributes pressurized air to the air springs, elevating the vehicle. A failed valve block essentially cuts that air supply, leading to problems with the vehicle's ride height and overall suspension performance. In summary, the Lexus GX 470 is a popular luxury crossover that offers a comfortable driving experience. However, older models with high mileage often experience problems with the air suspension system, including sensor failure, control panel faults, air compressor failure, air spring failure, airbag damage, and valve block failure. These issues can affect the vehicle's ride height, cause the car to sag in the rear or lean to one side, and even trigger a suspension warning light. Drivers should be aware of these common problems and take steps to maintain their vehicles' air suspension systems to ensure safe and comfortable driving.

I purchased our 2004 GX470 in 2012 and owned it for 2 years and 7 months. It was a great vehicle for us and the engine and transmission are extremely reliable. In hindsight, I would have opted for a model with fewer features, as the dynamic suspension can be costly to replace. Additionally, I had to replace the sensors for the rear air leveling, which failed on separate occasions, causing significant issues during a 500-mile road trip. For those who have experienced a 'transmission clunk,' it's worth noting that this is often caused by a slip yoke on the driveshaft that simply requires greasing - a quick and easy fix that takes only 30 seconds.

  2. Jimmie Lowe 2024-11-10

This is a great car overall, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with both sides front suspension sensors and back sensors going bad. Unfortunately, there is no cheap way to fix these problems. When the back goes out, it can feel like you are riding on a 4 wheeler. I have owned 3 Toyota Sequoias before and I would have chosen another one if I had known about this suspension problem. In my opinion, the best vehicle ever was the 2007 Toyota Sequoia. While this Lexus has many fancy additions that make for costly repairs, it is still a Toyota and is long lasting, built well, and tough. If you prefer a more basic Toyota, I would recommend skipping the fancy Lexus. Additionally, it is worth noting that this car is smaller than the Sequoia and has a gas mileage of 15-18 mpg, which may be a downside for some.

The consistent issue with transmission slippage has not been resolved by the dealer. Despite this, the dealer has refused to acknowledge the issue. Additionally, the tailgate design is not aesthetically pleasing and the ride quality is comparable to that of a tractor. While I had a great experience with my LX, I cannot say the same for the GX.

  4. Dayton Hahn 2024-08-17

The technical problems I have experienced, including mechanical issues with the drivetrain in the first year, have been resolved with confidence.

  5. Thurman Sipes 2024-07-14

Just passed 5000 miles. Your car has a superb drive train and great visibility. It's also wonderfully quiet. However, the driver seat is a bit narrow and short, and the third row is not very useful. Additionally, the rear barn door can be a bit of a pain. The ride can be a bit busy, but overall it's a great car. The only issue is that the a/c is excessively powerful and creates too much air movement, which can make passengers too cold. Unfortunately, the outside thermometer is defective, but the dealer is working on fixing it.

Positive 2004 Lexus Gx 470 car reviews

  1. Kay Schmitt 2025-08-19

I bought my '04 car with 43K miles as certified with a 3yr/100K warranty. Now, 2 years later, it still drives better than many new cars and SUVs. It's a very solid vehicle and is very useful for cargo hauling. I own a small business with frequent airport trips, and I can fit as many as 20 cases inside with the rear seats removed and middle seats folded! The third seats don't have enough legroom, but they are okay for short trips. The seats are comfortable with a very tastefully done interior, a large sunroof, and a very macho-looking exterior. Overall, I've had trouble-free 2 years with some minor wear-tear issues, like tires, brakes, and some bulbs. It's great for snow and bad weather, and it feels very secure on the road with a commanding view!

  2. Brody Mueller 2025-08-13

In almost 100,000 miles of driving on and off the road, this car has been the most trouble-free vehicle I have ever owned. The brakes lasted for 80k miles and it has been an absolute joy to go off-road with, while also performing great in the city.

  3. Jordy Gerhold 2025-08-12

Ride is excellent, as well as the incredible sound system! The leather trim and wood are of the highest quality. The instrument panel is easily readable, and handling is amazing for a larger, yet still sleek SUV. Parking is easy, and I love the rear backup camera! I absolutely love my GX 470.

  4. Luis Lueilwitz 2025-07-24

I'm so glad to hear that you love your 2004 GX470! It's great to know that you haven't had any major issues and that it's been easy to maintain. From what you've said, it sounds like this SUV is the perfect size and provides a comfortable and enjoyable ride. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation. I hope that Toyota continues to improve and that you can enjoy your car for many more years to come!

  5. Jerod Beahan 2025-07-15

I was the previous owner of a BMW X5. In my experience, the Lexus surpasses the X5 in several areas such as sound system, climate control, NAV, smoothness of ride, handling in snow, general comfort, roominess, quietness of ride, absence of rattles, rear camera, and reliability. Although I preferred the X5's handling, braking, PDC, gas mileage, sportiness, looks, and nibleness/quickness off the line, I believe that the Lexus offers better value and all-around usability. Additionally, the Lexus is better suited for towing due to its size.
