Lexus Gx 470 problems

The Lexus GX (Japanese: レクサス・GX, Hepburn: Rekusasu GX) is a mid/full-size luxury SUV sold in North American and Eurasian markets by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. The GX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, from which it derives its off-road capability. Lexus introduced the first generation, known as the GX 470 in 2002, and subsequently became the third SUV to enter the Lexus lineup. A full-time four-wheel drive system is standard with low-range gearing. The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the GX 470 was the same as used on the larger LX 470. The firm next introduced the second-generation model in 2009, badged GX 460 to reflect the switch to a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus later released a lower displacement GX 400 in 2012 for the Chinese market, with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. The third-generation model introduced in 2023 uses the GX 550 moniker with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine and GX 550h with a turbocharged hybrid electric 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

As of 2024, the GX is positioned between the larger LX or TX and the smaller RX. Though it is thought the GX has always been larger than the RX, from 2015 to 2022, the RX is slightly longer and slightly wider than the GX and therefore the GX was considered smaller. All GX production has occurred at the Tahara plant in Japan, alongside the Land Cruiser Prado and the export-minded Toyota 4Runner.

Some countries classify the GX as a full-size vehicle (e.g., Australia), while some classify it as a mid-size vehicle (e.g., US), depending on local regulations.

This is a great car overall, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with both sides front suspension sensors and back sensors going bad. Unfortunately, there is no cheap way to fix these problems. When the back goes out, it can feel like you are riding on a 4 wheeler. I have owned 3 Toyota Sequoias before and I would have chosen another one if I had known about this suspension problem. In my opinion, the best vehicle ever was the 2007 Toyota Sequoia. While this Lexus has many fancy additions that make for costly repairs, it is still a Toyota and is long lasting, built well, and tough. If you prefer a more basic Toyota, I would recommend skipping the fancy Lexus. Additionally, it is worth noting that this car is smaller than the Sequoia and has a gas mileage of 15-18 mpg, which may be a downside for some.

The consistent issue with transmission slippage has not been resolved by the dealer. Despite this, the dealer has refused to acknowledge the issue. Additionally, the tailgate design is not aesthetically pleasing and the ride quality is comparable to that of a tractor. While I had a great experience with my LX, I cannot say the same for the GX.

The technical problems I have experienced, including mechanical issues with the drivetrain in the first year, have been resolved with confidence.

Just passed 5000 miles. Your car has a superb drive train and great visibility. It's also wonderfully quiet. However, the driver seat is a bit narrow and short, and the third row is not very useful. Additionally, the rear barn door can be a bit of a pain. The ride can be a bit busy, but overall it's a great car. The only issue is that the a/c is excessively powerful and creates too much air movement, which can make passengers too cold. Unfortunately, the outside thermometer is defective, but the dealer is working on fixing it.

The car is an attempt to align the practical and fun nature of an off-road vehicle with a luxury one. However, it seems that the two don't mix well. On the bright side, the exterior lines are quite pleasant. Unfortunately, engaging the 4-wheel drive is awkward and inefficient, which only adds to the already overpriced product.

I've had my GX for almost 2 years and I must say, it's been a great experience. If you're looking for a reliable car, this is the one for you. The fit and finish inside is excellent and it's been a headache-free SUV for me. The only issue I've had is with the sunroof, which makes a slight rattling sound when passing over uneven pavement. Although it's not a major issue, it's something you wouldn't expect from a car at this price point. Unfortunately, it hasn't been fixed yet. Overall, I highly recommend the LEXUS GX!

  2. Nathanael Trantow 2024-10-09

Overall, I absolutely love the Lexus GX 470! It's incredibly comfortable and has an excellent ride. I also really like the styling and the mid-size of the vehicle. The size makes it very manageable and easy to handle.

  3. Brenden Durgan 2024-10-02

As someone who has owned 4 previous Lexus vehicles, including my first SUV, I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the ride is. I opted for every available option and have been enjoying driving it. However, I have noticed some issues with the braking system. When towing my jet skis, the performance is not up to par and the brakes tend to fade when I have to stop quickly at highway speeds. Overall, I am happy with my purchase but I do hope that Lexus can improve the braking system in the future.

During my test drive, I noticed that the Lexus did not meet my expectations for comfort and noise reduction, which are qualities that Lexus is known for. Despite the $4k price increase for the Kinetic and non-KDSS vehicles, I did not notice any difference. The salesman mentioned that the difference is only noticeable on off-road terrain. While the vehicle is great, I expected better quality for the price. As an owner of a '97 4x4 limited 4runner, I hardly noticed a difference in ride quality. Although the nav and entertainment system are impressive, I still experienced bumps on the road and wind noise on the windows.

I'm really enjoying the truck so far! It handles corners just like my car, even at 40+ miles, which must mean that KDSS is working hard to maintain balance. Plus, the DVD and Navigation systems are great for entertaining passengers when the truck isn't moving. The 5:1 sound channels are amazing, and the wireless headphones have crystal clear sound quality - I think they're even better than my home theater system! And to top it off, there's even a cassette player so I can finally play those tapes I've had stored away for nearly 20 years. While only time will tell for the mechanical and electrical components, I trust Lexus to offer superior build quality.
