The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.

Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.

The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.

The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.

The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.

The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 2017 Lexus Gs450h problems

The Lexus GS450h, a hybrid sedan known for its comfort and performance, has some common problems that owners have reported. One of the most prevalent issues is battery failure, which is particularly common in the first-generation Lexus GS450h. The battery pack, which is a crucial component of the hybrid system, can degrade over time and lose its ability to hold a charge. This can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and decreased power output, and in some cases, the battery pack may fail completely, requiring a costly replacement.

Another common problem with the Lexus GS450h is issues with the brakes. Some drivers have reported that the brakes feel spongy or that the brake pedal is too firm. This may be caused by a problem with the brake actuator, which regulates the hydraulic pressure in the braking system. Other possible causes of brake issues include worn brake pads, a faulty master cylinder, or air in the brake lines.

Fuel system issues have also been reported in the Lexus GS450h. Some drivers have experienced difficulty starting the engine or stalling, which may be caused by a failing fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator.

Other potential issues with the Lexus GS450h include problems with the air conditioning system, suspension issues, and various electrical problems. Some drivers have also reported that the car may consume oil more quickly than expected, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed.

To prevent these issues from occurring in your Lexus GS450h, it's important to follow the recommended maintenance schedule and have your vehicle inspected regularly by a qualified mechanic. If you do experience any of these issues, it's important to address them as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your vehicle.

Positive 2017 Lexus Gs450h car reviews

We upgraded from RX's to the GS450h for its efficiency and environmental benefits. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the bi-xenon HID lights during our first night drive. They are far superior to the headlamps we were expecting, providing a bright and expansive view. Although the LED lamps that come with the luxury package are not available on any Lexus lot, we suspect they are even better. Have you had the chance to experience the LEDs on a Lexus? We have driven the car for just over 1000 miles and are thoroughly enjoying it!

This vehicle is definitely worth the wait! It's luxurious, sporty, high-tech, and fuel-efficient. The technology is incredible. Within seconds, my phone was synced to the Bluetooth, all of my contacts were downloaded, and music was playing from my phone wirelessly. I can even play Pandora, find an open table, search on Bing, and more. If I'm lost, I can call a live person and have them map directions for me instantly. Everything works perfectly! The car has power with a smooth ride and great gas mileage. The matte bamboo definitely complements the interior, giving it a classy look. This car far exceeded my expectations!!

It's almost been a year since I bought this car on 12/28/14, and I must say, I absolutely love it! In town, it averages 28-29 miles per gallon, and on the freeway, it gets 34-36 miles per gallon. This is a significant improvement compared to my Infiniti, which only got 17 city and 23 freeway. The Lexus experience has been fantastic, and the San Diego Infiniti dealer can't compare. I've only had one service at 3900 miles in 10 months, and SD Lexus has been great. I haven't experienced any defects so far, which is much better than my previous Infinitis. I would definitely buy this car again. It drives and handles well, is quiet, and a joy to be in. I opted for the luxury package, which I think greatly improves the experience. The only downsides are the trunk lighting, which is awful, but I added an LED light to fix that. It could also use more charging options.

The GS450h is an excellent car in most respects, driving smoothly and inspiring confidence. However, there are two features that I found unacceptable as a buyer. Firstly, the LED headlamps w/AFS are only available with the Luxury package, which is disappointing. The regular bi-Xenon headlamps provide minimal illumination and are worse than any we've ever had on our Lexus autos. Secondly, Lexus claims that this car gets 34MPG average, but when brand new, it only got 30.4 MPG. With less than 9K miles on it, this winter, we've gotten 29.2 MPG! I'm on top of air pressure and I don't gun the car, so it's not me; it's the car and Lexus's misleading claims. Overall, I believe that the GS450h is a great car, but these two issues need to be addressed by Lexus.
