The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.

Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.

The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.

At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.

In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

Common 2013 Honda Insight problems

The Honda Insight, particularly the 2013 model, has been associated with several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include excessive oil consumption, engine failure, and the engine jerking while accelerating.

Excessive oil consumption is a significant concern for Honda Insight owners. This issue can be caused by faulty gaskets, a higher engine temperature, or the wrong type of oil being used. If left unaddressed, high oil consumption can lead to engine failure. Drivers are advised to monitor their car's oil consumption and take it to a garage if they notice an unexpected quantity of oil being used.

Another problem reported by Honda Insight owners is the engine jerking while accelerating. This issue can be caused by problems with the car's transmission and is best diagnosed by a mechanic. A jerky acceleration can make the car difficult to drive and may lead to further issues if not addressed promptly.

The 2013 Honda Insight also has a history of stalling while driving. This issue can be caused by problems with spark plugs, which may wear out or even melt. Drivers are advised to get their car checked out if they notice any problems with their spark plugs, as this can lead to increased fuel consumption, difficulty starting the car, and a loss of power.

In addition to these issues, the Honda Insight's regenerative braking system has been reported to have problems. Drivers have complained of issues with the brakes, which may require a mechanic's attention. To read more about regenerative braking systems and warning signs, drivers are advised to check out Grimmer's guide.

In summary, the Honda Insight, particularly the 2013 model, has been associated with several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include excessive oil consumption, engine failure, the engine jerking while accelerating, and stalling while driving. Drivers are advised to monitor their car's oil consumption, get their spark plugs checked, and take their car to a mechanic if they notice any problems with their brakes or acceleration.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-04
  • VIN: JHMZE2H50DS
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Noticed decreased performance & frequent oil changes in 2015. At first, I did not know the weak engine performance was related to the oil consumption & was never offered diagnostic testing until May 2023 across multiple Honda shops in different states. With this, I was under the impression that my car was performing within normal limits. Finally in May 2023 the local Honda shop recommended the proper diagnostic test & told me about the known piston/oil consumption defect known to this model & the (expired) warranty extension that was associated with it. I returned end of Aug 2023 to get results of my oil consumption test, which was positive. At this time, they quoted me a repair cost (to change out the piston rings, gaskets, & spark plugs) but I had to defer due to the high cost. The service representative that day happened to be rude/dismissive & also did not tell me how urgent this repair is or what the consequences of not repairing could be. I have been driving my car in the local area/mainly on surface streets while waiting for the service manager to get back to me about appealing to Honda USA for a goodwill repair. In the interim, my car suddenly & randomly stopped working while on the road. Just started shuddering, engine lost power & could not go more than 10 mph. 4 engine lights came on (check emissions, steering, VSA, hill assist systems). No real warning beforehand, I had been living with this defect undiagnosed for years. I was fortunately on a small streets at night when there was no traffic, so I did not lose power with other cars around, but had this happened on a busy/fast road, it could have easily caused an accident.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-20
  • VIN: JHMZE2H51DS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I experienced "rough running" of my 2013 Honda Insight just prior to August of 2021. Initial work on the vehicle helped, but repairs became increasingly expensive and extensive. EX: A simple oil change on about 8/2/2021 (mileage at 64,545). At about mileage 68,370 the vehicle failed again (showing check engine light / stalling); repair shop found a misfire on cylinder #4, and all 8 of the spark plugs were replaced.  Then on/about Nov./2022 (mileage at 71,988), the vehicle was running rough again (with check engine light on) and the repair shop found a miss in cylinder #4 again, and then replaced cylinder #4  spark plugs and coils. On/about Feb./2023, the vehicle had more problems (running rough) and then the repair shop found a misfire on #4 again (spark plug was replaced.) On/about 5/18/2023, I took my vehicle in for a routine oil change. About two days later, on/about 5/20/2023, I (along with my girlfriend) drove on the freeway for a long trip. We had only been on the freeway for a few miles when the engine died. I had accelerated to 75 m.p.h. on a slight upgrade and was in the process of setting the cruise control when the engine revved up to 4,000 r.p.m.'s (as if it was climbing a steep hill); several warning lights showed up on the dashboard.  I immediately disengaged the cruise control while in the left lane and (thankfully due to no vehicles being near us) was able to get the vehicle off to the right edge of the freeway. The vehicle had no power. I called a tow truck and the driver attempted to drive the Honda Insight onto his ramp (with thick smoke billowing out of the exhaust pipe) but it was only able to go half the car length up the ramp. At first, I was told it needed 2 spark plugs and was fixed. I reminded them that all 8 had recently been replaced; they then said no compression on #2 / that engine was dead. Took it to Honda; diagnosed it as the oil consumption issue. Check lights are for systems: emmission, brake, VSA, w/ various other lights on dash.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-31
  • VIN: JHMZE2H57DS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have owned my Honda Insight for almost 10 years now. I bought it because it has great MPG. But this year has been horrible for it. It suddenly lost power while I was driving on the highway. Luckily I was able to move over to the side, and traffic was not too heavy at the time. Checkered Flag Honda in Virginia Beach, VA performed a TSB on it, and again two months ago, stating the exact same repair to be done each time. Now, it is displaying the very same symptoms I took it in for the first time, AGAIN. I will be uploading those reciepts as soon as I can find them tomorrow. After looking online, it is very obvious that I am not the only one with this same problem that could possibly endanger drivers. Honda has failed for over 10 years to find the manufacturer defect in the 2010-2014 Honda Insights, and have been issuing repeated TSBs, with only minor deviations stating the same repair to be performed (details below). I confirmed in CarComplaints.com and InsightCentral.net, that Honda is indeed screwing people over on this. A compiled TSB history and detailed list are available in a shared excel file from my Google Drive here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lO7Z4vrtbtS9EzqW-PPwutNHTc4IPA2r/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=107278015992975669585&rtpof=true&sd=true My guess is this could end up being a class action Lawsuit, judging by the responses of some of these folks in the forums. If you have any possibility of helping us with this, please do. And God Bless. -[XXX], USN (ret.) INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-26
  • VIN: JHMZE2H53DS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: 2013 Honda Insight Hybrid LX (4 cylinder) vehicle purchased on 8/19/14. thanks This complaint is was filed to due engine oil consumption on my Honda-hybrid. In 2020 my car began losing oil quite frequently as I was having to add or change the oil often. On 8/27/21 I took the vehicle to Honda of Downtown Los Angeles, Kesean Zachary informed me they would need to perform an engine oil consumption test and change the oil. Soon after that the car was again losing oil so I returned it to Honda of Downtown on 11/18/21, where Kesean checked the oil with the dipstick and informed that there was no oil consumption. A month later, the car was still losing oil.. this is my work car and I needed to get this problem resolved.. so I decided to take it back to where I purchased the car, Honda of Hollywood on 3/23/22. I spoke with Willie PIttman who informed me they would need to perform another engine oil consumption test and change the oil. He said to me, drive the vehicle for 1,000 miles and bring the car back - this was on a Wednesday, and on Saturday 3/26/22 I told my wife we were going for a drive to see how the car runs. We drove a 52 miles when we decided to head back home, we drove another 11 miles when the vehicle stalled on the 101-fwy in the City of Camarillo, the car just died while driving in the 2nd lane I veered to the right to try to make it to the shoulder but the car only idled over two more lanes to the right and died in the 4th lane, that's when my wife really panic. I had to replace the engine because the piston rings were all black carbon burnt which were burning the oil. Replaced the Electrical and the regular batteries . Replaced two emission exhausted sensors and also the computer.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-13
  • VIN: JHMZE2H74DS
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We were driving our Honda in a 70mph zone and the car's speed suddenly dropped to 15mph. We were not able to drive any faster than 15mph and could have been killed while driving on a highway where other cars were driving at 70mph, or we could have caused a pile up of cars with multiple accidents. We were very lucky that we were able to pull over to the side of the highway before another car hit us. We were not even able to drive to an exit, and had to sit on the side of a busy highway for nearly 3 hours as we waited for a tow truck. Multiple warning lights came on at the same time the speed of the car suddenly dropped. Warning lights for most systems on the car starting flashing at this point, but not in advance to warn us. We had the car towed to a local mechanic and he told us that a piston in the engine had failed completely and the engine would need to be rebuilt. We contacted Honda on the first business day after our engine failed, which was Monday, November 15. The engine in our car is currently under an extended warranty with Honda because of problems with the pistons and engine. It was not part of a recall, but definitely should have been! Instead, Honda called it a "customer preference". Honda admitted to us on the phone that this was part of the "customer preference" and that the Honda dealer should repair the engine as part of the extended warranty; however, it has been nearly a month since our initial call to Honda and they still have not authorized the work. We have called them approximately 15-20 times in the past month and they continue to evade our calls by telling us that "a manager will get back to us". We have been told this repair will cost approximately $10,000, and therefore, it's not an option for us to just pay for the repair ourselves. Honda is aware of this safety issue, they have not issued a recall for it and they clearly have no intention of honoring their warranty for this issue. As consumers, we don't know what to do.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-01-25
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JHMZE2H76DS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED A NEW 2013 HONDA INSIGHT.THE CAR HAD EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. IT REQUIRED ONE QUART OF OIL TO BE ADDED EVERY 2-3 WEEKS. WE REPEATEDLY VOICED OUR CONCERNS IN AT LEAST 5 OCCASIONS. EACH TIME WE WERE TOLD BY THE THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION 'WAS NORMAL'. OUR COMPLAINTS WERE IGNORED, OUR CONCERNS DISMISSED.ON JANUARY 25, 2017, WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY I-78, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STARTED LOSING POWER AND COMPLETELY STALLED. LUCKILY, THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES BEHIND. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE THAT A CYLINDER EXHAUST VALVE HAD BROKEN OFF, CAUSING SEVERE AND IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO PISTONS AND THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE ENGINE WAS RENDERED USELESS. AMERICAN HONDA REJECTED TO COVER ANY OF THE EXPENSES. WE WERE TOLD TO PURCHASE A USED ENGINE, WHICH COST US $4,689.51 OUT OF OUR POCKET IN ENGINE, PARTS AND LABOR. AFTER THE REPAIRS, THE CAR CONTINUED HAVING EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. ON AUGUST 24, 2017, THE 2ND ENGINE ALSO BLEW UP, COINCIDENTALLY WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY I-78. THIS TIME, WE WERE INFORMED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL MEMO FROM AMERICAN HONDA, EXTENDING ENGINE WARRANTY TO 8 YEARS FOR INSIGHT MODELS 2012 AND 2013. AMERICAN HONDA KEEPS THIS WARRANTY EXTENSION QUIETLY. IT MIGHT APPEAR THAT THEY ARE JUST WAITING FOR ACCIDENTS AND/OR COMPLAINTS TO HAPPEN, AND ONLY THEN OFFER THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. I BELIEVE THIS IS A BIG SAFETY AND WARRANTY ISSUE. I FEAR FOR MY HUSBAND'S AND OTHER CONSUMERS' SAFETY. AMERICAN HONDA REJECTED HONORING THE WARRANTY COVERAGE, NOT TO REIMBURSE US FOR THE $4,689.51 WE PAID FOR THE FIRST TIME ENGINE REPLACEMENT. THIS REQUEST OF OURS WAS REJECTED FOR WITHOUT SUBSTANTIVE ARGUMENTS. WHILE AMERICAN HONDA FAILED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, ENGINES FOR THIS MODEL STARTED FAILING AT ABOUT THE 100K MILE MARK, SOMETHING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY INSIGHT CAR OWNERS.

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-01-30
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JHMZE2H76DS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE HAS ON-GOING "OIL CONSUMPTION" ISSUES THAT AMERICAN HONDA NEGLECTED TO ADDRESS. AS A RESULT, THE OIL GOES UP EXHAUST PIPES TO CAUSED ENGINE OVER HEAT AND BLOW UP DURING DRIVING ON HIGHWAY. AMERICAN HONDA ISSUED AN "INTERNAL MEMO" TO EXTEND ENGINE WARRANTY TO 8 YEARS WITHOUT NOTIFYING CAR OWNERS. HOWEVER, THEY FAILED TO COVER OUR BLEW-UP ENGINE WHEN THE FIRST TIME HAPPENED AND CHARGED US $4600 FOR AN USED ENGINE. WITHIN 8 MONTHS, THE SECOND ENGINE BLEW UP AGAIN ON THE HIGHWAY. AMERICAN HONDA FINALLY COVERED THE SECOND ENGINE REPAIR. THE AMERICAN HONDA REJECTED TO REIMBURSE THE FIRST ENGINE BLOW-UP. THEY DENIED ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINE, BUT THE EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 8 YEARS??? WE HAVE THE RECORDS FOR BOTH ENGINE BLOW-UPS.

Negative 2013 Honda Insight car reviews

  1. Alexander Medhurst 2024-11-15

If you're considering buying an early made Insight, it's worth noting that it may have a higher oil consumption than you're used to. Unfortunately, your dealership may not recognize this as an issue, as Honda has deemed it acceptable for engines to consume up to 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. It's important to keep in mind that this car requires less oil than most, with a capacity of only 2.9 or 3.4 quarts. In my experience, my car loses around .75 of a quart, which means I have only 1.15 quarts left at 3000 miles and less than 0 at 5000 miles. While Honda may not consider this a problem, it's something to keep in mind when making your decision. With that said, I would recommend considering other vehicle options.

I really enjoyed the test drive, although I wish I had spent more time on it. Unfortunately, I realized that the car wasn't the right fit for me as soon as I got on the highway after leaving the dealership. I noticed a few issues right away, such as road noise, a bumpy ride, and poor acceleration. After driving it for a few days on my daily commute, I started experiencing some pretty bad headaches. This was the final straw that led me to sell the car. I suspect that the hybrid motor and wires running through the cabin may have had something to do with it. I've decided to hold off on buying another hybrid until more research is done on this issue. Unfortunately, I did end up losing $7k when I sold it back just two months later.

Hello! I was in the market for a hybrid car and wanted to purchase a certified pre-owned vehicle for the added warranty. After some research, I found that the Honda Insight was a suitable option that fit within my budget. However, I have had some issues with the car. The CVT transmission and acceleration have not met my expectations, and I find the seats uncomfortable. Additionally, I have had to visit the dealership multiple times for a faulty tire pressure sensor. While the car lacks some basic features such as mirrors and Bluetooth, I understand that these may not be a priority for everyone. I have noticed that the car has depreciated in value quite significantly since I purchased it 18 months ago, which is disappointing. Despite these issues, I appreciate the effort Honda has put into creating a hybrid car and I hope they continue to improve their products. Thank you for taking the time to read my feedback.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Insight. While it was great for the first year, I did encounter some issues that made it less than ideal for my needs. The backseat and overhead space are quite small, so it may not be the best choice for taller individuals or families. Additionally, I unfortunately experienced a breakdown due to oil flooding the engine and some other issues. While the dealership was supportive, it was disappointing to have to deal with these problems. Overall, I would caution against purchasing this particular hybrid due to its various issues. Thanks for listening!

I purchased the car brand new in 2013 and initially enjoyed it quite a bit. It handles well, has some great features (I had the EX with Navigation), and gets really good mileage. However, around 50K miles, I started experiencing warning lights, the car would act strangely, and it used a lot of oil. After getting a diagnosis from my trusted indie car repair guy (who I trust way more than the dealer), I found out that this model has piston issues and may require some expensive repairs. I then discovered from Honda that my warranty had been extended for 8 years, but unfortunately, I was one month outside of the warranty period. My dealer was not helpful either. So, thank you, Honda. Over the past 30 years, I have owned 6 different models, but unfortunately, we are done. If you are looking for a used hybrid, I would not recommend this car.

Positive 2013 Honda Insight car reviews

  1. Jack Bayer 2024-11-09

The Insight is one of the best cars I have ever owned. As the owner of a small courier business, I drive over 40,000 miles a year and this car never fails to impress me. Even at 148,000 miles, it has only required basic maintenance and one set of front brakes. The ride and handling are excellent for the cost of the vehicle, and the driver's seat is exceedingly comfortable even on long trips. Although it is a basic car in terms of luxury, it has a lot of nice features that make it comfortable overall, and the handling and driving experience are impressive for a vehicle in this price range. I always get better mpg than the car is rated for without really trying. You get a lot for your money with this vehicle.

  2. Deangelo Jacobs 2024-09-14

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you're already getting such good gas mileage. The Insight's style really stands out, both inside and out, and it's great to hear that it's so responsive. It sounds like you did your research and made a smart choice. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  3. Stephen Kertzmann 2024-08-13

We're so glad to share that our car gets an impressive 41 MPG in the city and up to 48 on the highway! We've been driving it for about 7 months now and we haven't found the road noise to be excessive. We also have to give a shoutout to our amazing dealer and their local and loyal mechanics - one of whom has been there for over 20 years! The only downside we've noticed is that taller or heavier people may have a bit of trouble riding comfortably.

  4. Rhett Tromp 2024-07-13

If you're considering buying this 2011 model, it's definitely worth taking it for a test drive first. Make sure to ask any questions you may have and thoroughly check everything, including certification and the battery's condition. My car has over 125,000 miles on it and still runs great because I treat it with patience and discipline. The only issues I've had were with the wheel studs, which were damaged by a careless tire changer. However, this is an easy fix that you can do yourself. Other than that, I haven't had any problems with the car. It's a reliable beast! Keep in mind that oil changes can be expensive, but you can save money by going to the dealer, although you may have to wait a while. If you're not prepared for the maintenance costs, this may not be the car for you. Good luck with your search!

  5. Bennett Leffler 2024-04-21

This sounds like an amazing car! You've been able to get an average of 43 mpg, which is fantastic. It's great to hear that you've been a loyal Honda customer since 9/1979 and have owned several models, including 3 Civics, 2 Insights, and 1 CRX. Your current Insight seems to be the best one yet, and I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much!
