The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common 1998 Gmc Vandura problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are some common problems with the GMC Vandura 1998 based on complaints from owners:

  1. Windshield Wiper Motor Component Failure: Models made between 1990 and 1999 may experience intermittent issues with the windshield wiper motor, leading to wipers stopping, failing to turn on, or running continuously on one speed setting. This problem can be temporarily fixed by tapping on the control box or permanently resolved by replacing the wiper motor control board.
  2. Electric Seat/Bed Malfunction: Owners have reported issues with the electric rear seat/bed in the van getting stuck in the bed position and not converting back to a seat. This problem may be due to failed motors or control components. Solutions involve checking the motor control board, cables, and the electronic controller unit for adjustments or replacements.
  3. Fuel Pump and Ignition Problems: Complaints include sudden stalling or difficulty starting the vehicle, resembling fuel or ignition issues. Owners have replaced fuel pumps, filters, ignition components, and sensors without resolving the problem. Some cases have been linked to issues with the electronic spark control module, distributor cap, or spark-related components.
  4. Steering Wheel Position Sensor Failure: Another reported issue is the failure of the steering wheel position sensor, leading to stability messages in the Silverado or Sierra models. Replacing this sensor, which typically occurs around 90,000 miles, can resolve the stability message errors.
  5. Coolant and Oil Leaks: Some owners have experienced coolant or oil leaks from the intake manifold gaskets, which can lead to engine performance issues. Detecting and repairing these leaks promptly can prevent further damage to the engine.

These common problems with the GMC Vandura 1998 highlight various electrical, mechanical, and sensor-related issues that owners have encountered. Addressing these problems promptly through proper diagnosis and repair can help maintain the vehicle's performance and reliability.
