The Kia Carens (Korean: 기아 카렌스) is a compact car (C-segment) manufactured by Kia since 1999, spanning over four generations, and was marketed worldwide under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Rondo. The initial three generations had a MPV body style and were marketed worldwide, with presence in its home country South Korea, in Europe, and North America since the second-generation. The fourth-generation model took a different approach in terms of design and targeted markets, as it was developed as a "strategic model" for the Indian market. It also adopts a crossover-inspired exterior design.
The name "Carens" derives from the word "car" and "renaissance", while the name "Rondo" derives from the musical term Rondo.
First generation (RS/FJ; 1999)
Kia debuted the first generation model of Carens, the RS series in May 1999. It is based on the same platform as the Kia Sephia. A facelift was issued in 2002.
The model was discontinued in Australia in 2001, with production continuing elsewhere for the updated model which was launched in 2002.

- Summary: I had to replace the tires on this car several times in 3 years. They alarm had a glitch that the car would not start and you had to take it specifically to a Kia dealer to have they alarm reprogrammed. Even upon repairs to your local mechanic. Costing them more money and me more money because they could not get in the car by pass they alarm without using kia first to reprogram it. The brakes locked up. The lights woukd go off for airbag and stay on. The anti lick brake light would stay on .. Very dangerous. I had to spend more money to because of they alarm. Even just replacing the battery in the alarm remote cost more money for the remote and the programming of the remote . You could not just replace the battery. The tires and brakes gave me several issues in 3 years To the tube of close 3000. And that's being fair.

THE CAR HAS SINCE BEEN DESTROYED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY, HOWEVER I STILL HAVE PICTURES. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE CHECKED IN OTHER RONDOS SO NO ONE ELSE HAS TO ENDURE WHAT MY SON WHO WAS DRIVING DID. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PICTURE THAT ALTHOUGH THE PASSENGER AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, THE STEERING WHEEL IN IN TACT AND NONE OF THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE SINCE THE CAR FLIPPED OVER 3 TIMES. HE WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET.

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 KIA RONDO. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE STALLED AND THE POWER STEERING SEIZED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND IT RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
2009 Kia Rondo recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2009 Kia Rondo.

- Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

- Summary: KIA IS RECALLING 6,680 MY 2008-2009 RONDO LX AND EX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.4 LITER ENGINE. THE FUEL PUMP MAY NOT OPERATE PROPERLY RESULTING IN NOT ENOUGH FUEL GETTING TO THE ENGINE. POOR ENGINE STARTING, ENGINE HESITATION, AND OTHER IMPAIRMENT MAY RESULT, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT MAY ILLUMINATE.
- Consequence: UNUSUALLY SEVERE IMPAIRMENT WHILE DRIVING COULD EXPOSE THE DRIVER TO THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH AN IMPROVED PART. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA AT 1-800-333-4542.

We purchased our car as a demo from the lot, so it was technically new. I was a bit hesitant about the value we would get, but almost a year later, we absolutely LOVE it! We get an impressive 24 combined city/highway miles per gallon. We opted for all the bells and whistles, including the sunroof, leather seats, and 3rd row, which hardly cost us anything extra. I am 5'6'' and can comfortably fit in the 3rd row (although I wouldn't do it all the time, and someone a bit taller might have to sit sideways). There is plenty of room in the front and middle, and the seats fold flat, which is a rare find.

I'm so glad you found the Rondo! It sounds like it's the perfect fit for your needs. Not only is it comfortable and spacious, but it's also economical and fun to drive. The interior looks great and there's plenty of room for all your stuff. Plus, with features like ABS, stability control, and traction control, you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. It's surprising that more people haven't discovered this gem of a vehicle. I hope you continue to enjoy your Rondo and all its great features!

Great car! I love the V6 and the manual shift. The folding third row is fantastic and there's plenty of room. The leather seats and sunroof are also great features. Speaking of the sunroof, it's positioned perfectly so you don't get beat up by the sun. The only thing that's missing is the outside temperature display, which drives me crazy (no pun intended). I've driven almost 28K miles on the highway, in rain and snow, and have had no problems. It's even good in slow traffic, despite having 16-inch rims.

This is a great compact SUV! I've personally owned a 2009 model for over 5 years and have never had any major problems. While the 3rd row may not be the most spacious, it's perfect for occasional use, especially for younger passengers. If you plan on using the 3rd row frequently, keep in mind that getting in and out may not be the easiest. Overall, I absolutely love my Rondo and wish they would continue making them. There really isn't another car on the market quite like it!

I was really impressed when I drove the car. The ride was excellent - quiet and stable. The seats are super comfortable and the visibility is outstanding. It's incredibly roomy, even for all my 6'4

We purchased our Rondo brand new in 2008. It was exactly the car we were looking for, with the added bonus of third row stow-and-go seats. For the first five years, we had reasonable performance from it, despite a few factory recalls during that time. However, unfortunately, two months after the five-year warranty expired, the engine failed. Despite following the warranty maintenance schedule, KIA Canada was unable to assist us with this matter, and we ended up having to have a second-hand motor installed. It's disappointing that KIA doesn't stand behind their products, and like a previous poster, I too am a bit embarrassed about having recommended KIA to friends.

I purchased a KIA with the intention of having a 3rd row. Although it has plenty of space, I have encountered a few issues. The headlights have a horizon line and are not very effective on hills. Additionally, there is a bad vibration that KIA attributed to the rims bending when the car sat for too long. The solution was to overinflate the tires. Fixing the airbag lights took several attempts, and the stereo was faulty from the beginning, but the dealer initially thought it was fine. KIA eventually replaced it, but the replacement was also defective. After about 7 months, trade-in offers ranged from $7,000 to $10,800 for a car that had an MSRP of about $23,000 when purchased.

At 60,000 miles, it is recommended to replace the timing belt and water pump. Unfortunately, Kia has not yet addressed the issue of the AC condenser dripping directly onto the front subframe, causing rust to develop. However, I have found out that fixing the AC issue would have been inexpensive. If you own a Rondo, you may experience this issue. Kia acknowledges that there is a rust problem due to high salt and offers an undercoat recall. It is important to note that the Rondo currently only has 64,000 miles on it. It is clear that the car was made with cheap materials, but there are solutions available to address these issues.

I bought the Rondo for its price and have been very happy with it for the past year. It runs great and has not had any problems. I was pleasantly surprised by the many features it offers, such as 8 different airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, 4-wheel disk brakes, and an auto shifter. It is very roomy and has proven to be a great family car. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable vehicle. Although there is a wind noise on the driver's side, which I have read about in other complaints, it doesn't bother me anymore. Despite my colleagues' teasing, I am proud to drive this car every day.
