The Ram Heavy Duty (also known as the Ram HD) is the 4.5 generation of the Ram Pickup, a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ram Trucks division of Stellantis. Slotted above the Ram 1500, the Heavy Duty trucks range from the Ram 2500 to the Ram 5500. The Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 are offered as pickup trucks, while the Ram 3500 through Ram 5500 are offered as chassis cabs.

Introduced in January 2019 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, the current Ram Heavy Duty trucks are based on the Ram 1500 (DT). Ram Heavy-Duty models are produced at Saltillo Truck Assembly in Saltillo, Mexico.

Cab configurations

The Ram Heavy Duty is available in three different configurations: a two-door regular cab with a long bed, a four-door crew cab with either a standard bed or a long bed, or a four-door Mega Cab (a crew cab extended by 11.1 in (280 mm) allowing the rear seats to recline or offering more in-cab storage) with a standard bed.

Common 2020 Ram 5500 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2020 Ram 5500, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Suspension Issues:
Owners have raised concerns about suspension problems with the Ram 5500. This issue can manifest as vibrations, instability, or discomfort while driving. Suspension issues can impact the overall driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
  2. Vacuum Leaks:
Vacuum leaks in the Ram 5500 can lead to high RPM at idle or surges in engine performance. Over time, vacuum hoses can deteriorate, causing leaks that affect engine efficiency and emissions control. Addressing vacuum leaks promptly is crucial to maintain optimal engine performance.
  3. Aftermarket Items Interference:
Installation of aftermarket accessories like alarms or exhaust systems can sometimes cause electrical issues or drain the battery in the Ram 5500. Poorly installed aftermarket parts may trigger the check engine light or even prevent the vehicle from starting. Ensuring proper installation of aftermarket items is essential to avoid unnecessary damage.
  4. Spark Plug and Wire Problems:
Defective or worn-out spark plugs and plug wires can result in reduced engine performance, starting difficulties, or rough idling in the Ram 5500. These components are vital for igniting the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, affecting the overall efficiency and power output of the engine.
  5. Check Engine Light Concerns:
The check engine light in the Ram 5500 can illuminate due to various issues, ranging from minor concerns like a loose gas cap to more severe problems affecting engine performance. A flashing check engine light indicates a critical issue that requires immediate attention to prevent further damage and ensure safe operation of the vehicle.

These reported problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and attention to warning signs in the 2020 Ram 5500. Addressing these issues promptly can help maintain the vehicle's performance, reliability, and safety on the road.
