The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

I had the vehicle towed 80 miles to the nearest dealer in Columbia, SC they reported that it was a loose ground wire on the battery and told me it was resolved. Less than a month later the same thing happened again and all 4 wheels locked up requiring the towing company to drag it onto the flat bed two truck. It was towed to the local dealer in Hardeeville, SC for repair last Friday and am waiting on a notice that they are working on the vehicle. I did report the issue to the local dealer prior to the latest event and was told that the earliest available appointment was a month out. I was not told of any recall by either dealer but was told that they are having the same issue with “so many cars” The first event was on September 13th and the second on October 14th.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, the front passenger’s side seat belt locked, trapping the passenger in the seat. The contact stated that to unlock the seat belt the passenger had to manipulate the buckle to unlatch the buckle; then insert the seat belt several times before the seat belt operated as designed. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed that the seat belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred after the repair. The vehicle was returned to the same dealer and the seat belt was replaced three times. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,100.

- Summary: After the recent rain we had in CT and the Northeast we got in the car and water was dripping out of screw holes in the lighting and from the headliner just below the area where the windshield meets the body of the vehicle. The water was dripping into the drive selector and other electronics and the headliner was saturated with water. After calling multiple Land Rover dealers I was informed that failure of the seals on the Windshield on the Land Rover Discovery and some other models is a "known issue". The company has recalled a few of these models but not nearly enough. The vehicle now has to be assessed for water damage, cleaning, mold an the wind shield has to be replaced as well as any other compromised components. To top it all off, Land Rover has no loaner vehicles and won't pay for rental cars for affected owners, despite their long knowledge of this issue and failure to do anything to rectify it. Further, they are short of parts so their current solution is to dry out the car, "reseal" the windshield and give the car back to you until all of the replacement parts arrive, which could take months. So people have to be without their vehicle or driving a potentially compromised vehicle, since we won't know the extent of the water damage for some time, and they are just letting this issue continue while doing nothing. Land Rover should be forced to fix all existing cars, inform all potential buyers of a new car of this issue and redesign the car to fix this problem for good. It is not only a nuisance but can certainly be a major safety hazard if the water penetration goes unnoticed for some time and damages electronics and drive components.

The Auto High Beam (AHB) system does not indicate through the instrument cluster when the high beams are illuminated automatically. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: The driver may be unaware that the high beams are illuminated, reducing visibility for oncoming traffic, and increasing the risk of a crash.

I leased the Discovery when it first came out in 2017. The SE model had a 6-cylinder engine that I absolutely loved. It had great acceleration and power, and the ride was both soft and sturdy. What I appreciated most about the ride was that it wasn't too springy like a Buick or Tahoe. The chassis absorbed a ton of road vibration and bumps, yet maintained a rigidity that made it feel controlled. Although I almost bought the car at the end of the lease, I ended up purchasing a new Defender instead. Throughout my time with the Discovery, I had zero issues with the car, except for the infotainment unit that would turn off every now and then (once a month). The blip would last maybe a few seconds, and then it would just reboot itself. Not a game changer. I drove the car hard and often and had zero complaints or mechanical issues. The engine was very reliable and efficient for a car of this size. I would definitely recommend it. I love the Discovery, but now I am a proud Defender owner!!!

Best 3rd seat space. Comfortable ride. You've had the car for 2 1/2 years and driven 33,000 miles with no trouble. Although, some of the console coating is showing signs of wear.

We bought a 2019 new & absolutely love it! Although the Bluetooth can be temperamental at times, which can be a bit of a pain, and there was a recall on the leaking windshield, it's still a steady, heavy, and capable hauler. We've driven 63K kms and now it's time for its first big service, including a new set of brakes.

How has it been treating you? It's been about four months since you purchased it, so I hope everything is going smoothly.

This car has unfortunately been a very disappointing purchase. However, it is important to note that many of the issues I experienced occurred after the warranty had expired. Despite this, I have had to replace the windshield twice due to water leaks, and the console cooler stopped working at only 50k miles despite minimal use. Additionally, there have been issues with oil leaks, the hood cable has had to be replaced twice before 60k miles, and there have been numerous software updates required to fix glitches such as screens randomly going black, slow touchscreen response, and freezing infotainment. The sunroof motor also had to be replaced before 60k miles, and there have been multiple DEF errors. The car also seems to go through tires quickly, although this may be due to the quality of the Continental tires. There have also been issues with the seat belt assembly and more oil leaks. It is worth noting that LR has installed two protective plates underneath the car to conceal the plastic connected to metal components. Overall, while this has not been a positive experience, I believe it is important to share my honest feedback.

In 2007, I purchased my first Land Rover, an 04 Disco with 30xxx miles. I was really impressed with the ruggedness and overall coolness of the vehicle. However, after a year and a half, it turned into a nightmare. The oil pump blew on the freeway and totally destroyed the engine, which was the first engine failure of any vehicle I had previously owned. It shook me pretty bad and I stayed away from Land Rovers for 18 years. Recently, the new Discovery caught my eye and I thought for sure Land Rover had changed as far as reliability goes. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. I purchased my 2019 Discovery SE with 26000 miles on it and the first thing to happen was tires wearing quicker than normal and alignment issues. The next thing was the car going into limp mode at low RPMs. I took it to Land Rover and they said it was the catalytic Converter. They had the car for 4 weeks due to the part being on backorder. This was done at 37k miles. At 43k, I was driving low RPMs through a subdivision and the engine started hesitating. I pulled over, got it towed, and sure enough, it needs a new engine. Unfortunately, the car is out of warranty now and the price I was given was $22,000. Needless to say, I won't be buying a Land Rover again.

I recently traded my 2021 Atlas for a 2018 Discovery hse after being impressed by my client's new Discovery. I was particularly drawn to the leather, the numerous compartments, and the tailgate guard that raises and lowers. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with water leakage shortly after purchasing the vehicle. Despite calling Tom Wood Landrover three times, I was unable to speak to a live person and the issue remained unresolved. The mildew smell that followed was quite unpleasant. However, I am grateful that Carmax has offered me a full refund. It's disappointing that a luxury SUV that ticks all the high-end boxes falls short on such basic features. I do regret not keeping my Atlas, but I'm hopeful that I'll find a better fit in the future.
